A pretty fancy shmancy restaurant if you ask me! Julep is serving up some taste seafood and American food. It's located in the backend of the plaza. The service here was also the cherry on the top. They have plenty of seating and a bar in the middle with TV's, I was watching the beginning playoff run of the Warriors there this year :( I ordered the flat iron steak which was cooked perfectly and pair well with spinach and a side of fries. The fries were good, I was just a bit confused if their were oily or they had truffle sauce on it. Calamari was also pretty good, I would get that again. The lighting was making all my food look really greasy on the black plates but overall it was a good meal. I would definitely come back to try more. read more

I headed back to the former Jimmy's Famous Tavern location in Brea. It was replaced by another place, it's called Julep Cast Iron Kitchen and Drink. I came here last Thursday night hoping it's a good place to try. I've ordered Strawberry Margarita (cocktail), Fish and Chips, and Butter Cake. Fish and Chips was pretty good. Fish was nice and flakey which makes it delicious. Portion size of the fries was more than I expected. Pretty unusual for Fish and Chips or any other items that comes with fries. Strawberry Margarita.... Not bad... but I had better ones elsewhere though. Butter Cakes (includes ice cream).... Pretty good. It's freshly made. Great presentation. Very delicious. Service..... Good, but I feel they were a little slow. They should try to speed it up more. Julep is a regular brunch spot among my friends in the area. So nice that you can make reservations ahead of time - heard they get really busy. But we got lucky at 12 on a Sunday and wasn't crowded at all. Service was attentive and super friendly. My friends love their bloody mary - don't often seen one with an onion ring on it! One friend ordered the biscuits and gravy and had plenty of leftovers; the other ordered the filet for brunch. I got the Spanish skillet, which was delicious. Took home a few leftovers because I couldn't stop eating - could have taken more home oops. It's a nice spot for a treat-yourself brunch. Would love to come again next time I'm in the area. This restaurant is sort of hidden away behind Mendocino Farms in a busy plaza. The interior is really cool and classy although I'm not sure what the theme is exactly...butterflies? The seating is mostly comfy booths and our service was quite personable and attentive. We were here for lunch and first ordered an appetizer: corn fritters. These were literally amazeballs. Crisp outside and warm, soft, and delicious inside. The bourbon maple syrup for dipping was soooooo good. If I'd been alone and no one was looking I'd grab that syrup cup and drink it like a shot. For lunch I got the Julep Cobb Salad. Their menu stated the ingredients were "romaine, blue cheese, tomatoes, bacon, grilled corn, hard-boiled egg, avocado, grilled chicken breast". There seemed like there was an entire head of lettuce...far too much lettuce! The abundant pieces of chicken were excellent and the egg and tomato pieces were good. The corn was quite sparse. I didn't ever find avocado, bacon, nor pieces of blue cheese. It was actually more like an enormous chicken salad. I liked it, everything was fresh, but it certainly wasn't anything close to what one would expect for a cobb. I had a lemonade to drink and it was quite good, a nice sweet to tart ratio. I liked this place but remain confused about the salad. If they ran out of ingredients they should just say so and give the customer an option to order something else. On behalf of the vegetarian lifestylers, I'm told is a lifestyle not a diet, it's been good to stumble upon this place. Thanks to Timmy, my long term friend/yelper, we got to DESTROY some bomb corn fritters. I've loved corn dogs for the longest time but always threw away the dog on a stick after carefully devouring the fried corn batter and wished for things to be different. Maybe it was the hunger but damn those incredible two-biters makes coming back worth the drive. Stir the syrup before dipping for maximum bourbon flavor. The farro arugula salad was light and refreshing but piled like a plateable avalanche. A lot of greens dressed lightly and took a while to finally see the face of the plate. But perfect with a fried appetizer. My friend though was missing avocado and bacon on his Cobb salad and found the lettuce to be an admirable opponent. Romaine won and none's the wiser. Delicious coffee and very friendly service. But there was an unnecessary long wait before someone could sit us. Happened to be in the area and stopped in for lunch with some family. The first thing that struck me is how dark and intimate it felt, even during the day, but in a good way. It felt fancier than it actually was, even a little cozy. It's a vibe I really enjoyed. I'll start by talking about server, Brent. He was awesome. Just a funny guy that helped make the experience fun. We started with some appetizers: corn fritters, Brussels sprouts, and spicy buffalo chicken wings. The corn fritters come with a bourbon maple glaze but I didn't think the two paired well together. They were just okay. The Brussels sprouts were delicious and I wish we got them with the goat cheese but some at our table didn't like it - can only imagine they'd be even better. The chicken wings were great - if you've ever had chicken wings before, then you know what you're in for. For the entree, I got a steak sandwich which on paper sounds amazing: ribeye, garlic aioli, arugula, sautéed mushrooms, jack cheese, crispy onion strings all on a French roll. Unfortunately, it was a little underwhelming. I can't pinpoint what exactly it was but it was just very...meh. I wish I had gotten the El Diablo burger instead (my cousin got this and raved about it). The only reason I didn't is because I had eaten a burger the day before so wanted to try something new. First time here and celebrated my Birthday Brunch! I ordered steak and eggs with Kentiki drink. I think they waited for majority of food to be done to bring ours up so my steak wasn't hot and I like to eat my food when it's hot/warmer side. My friends ordered the absinthe drink and it was really interesting! It definitely smelled like black licorice for sure when the water was getting mixed in the alcohol. I made reservations about a month in advance for group of 22 people. Server's name was Lex (on receipt) she was super nice and very attentive. Only downside was the sun was beaming on one side of our table so it was getting extremely hot. Julep is located in a shopping center in east Brea. It shares a parking lot with a Whole Foods store and several other popular businesses, so parking can sometimes be a challenge. Julep is easy to find thanks to the large green faux ivy and signage outside which is a nice place to take a photo if you like. We dined early on a Thursday evening and the restaurant wasn't very busy yet. We were a little surprised there was no host and we had to wait almost five minutes for one of the servers to come and greet and seat us. We sat in a booth which was nice and comfy. The inside is lit a little on the darker side and has a bit of a lounge vibe with the bar in the center. There is also a covered patio area for dining. We were not in the mood for a full dinner and just came for a drink and some appetizers. I had the Corpse Reviver 2 cocktail which was good. She had the Ken-Tiki Tea Spiller which is served in a cool mermaid glass. I was really impressed by this drink, very rich and great flavor without being over the top sweet. This was almost as good as some of the rum drinks we get at our favorite tiki bar. We started out with nachos and added chicken. It was a giant plate of nachos with jalapenos, diced pico de gallo, cheese sauce, scallions, a sour cream drizzle, beans on the bottom and a good amount of chicken. They were very good and there was so much, we couldn't finish it all. We also ordered the jalapeno artichoke dip which was also a very generous portion served in a cast iron skillet. It normally comes with tortilla chips, but since we already had a big plate of nachos, our server said he could substitute their grilled crostini bread. The dip was great on the bread but all of the slices had big holes which made it a bit of a challenge to keep the dip on. Luckily we had a ton of nacho chips left to finish off the dip. It wasn't overly spicy but the jalapenos did add a nice layer of flavor and a bit of heat. We were stuffed and ready to head out but when I heard the next table order the lemon meringue cheesecake dessert, I had to order one to take home. We paid the check but unfortunately then had to wait almost 15 minutes for a boxed dessert to be brought to the table. I ate it at home later that night and it was delicious and worth the wait. We went around 1:30 pm on a Friday afternoon; it was super last minute but surprisingly it wasn't busy. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food and drinks were great, both proportion and flavor wise. Make sure to try the shrimp beignets! The restaurant is located in a strip mall-sort, but is easy to find, just beware of how full the parking lot can get (plan accordingly). The restaurant itself was beautiful inside and out; if you go during the day, I'd recommend to eat in the patio. I'll most definitely come back during the evening for dinner sometime! read more

Came here with my wife this past Tuesday to celebrate my birthday, but it turned into a disaster because it took so long to get our drink and food. Place wasn't even busy but it seemed like someone called out or was just understaffed. Only saw two people working on the floor, one of which was the bartender. This was actually going to be a one star review but I'm giving three stars because they gave us a big discount for the wait time. I think it took about 20 minutes for my wife to get her drink, and took about 45 minutes to get our food. I can understand restaurants being short on staff, but just wish someone would've let us know so we could've made other plans. Luckily both my wife and I were off that day, but it would've been bad for people who were here during their lunch break at work. The food was decent to good, but not good or unique enough to warrant a return. Cast Iron Trout was pretty good but somewhat standard in terms of seasoning. Most of the flavor came from mashed potatoes with brown sage butter and citrus salad. Slow Braised Coca-Cola Beef Ribs were very tender and flavorful, although it tasted like regular BBQ short rib. AND, we were actually still going to order dessert from them (ice cream) and also easily had about a $250+ food bill so I was annoyed at the $25 charge for cake. I suppose I could (maybe) understand it if we were not ordering desserts from them, but definitely planned on still ordering desserts and just having the cake as well. I opt and got truffle fries instead of the mash potatoes since the other entree was also coming w mash potatoes. The truffle fries were yummy and crispy. ~ iron trout was more on the bland side. Could've taste must better, was disappointed in this entree. Not recommended in mine and my girlfriend's opinion. ~ espresso martini was good just not as strong, more on the lighter side. Our experience at Julep was mixed. Our initial waitress was pretty mia and it was obvious she was in a rush to leave for the night. Once she left and we got a new server, our experience improved. Our new waiter was much more attentive and friendly. Favorites dishes: Ahi tuna tartare, Kale Caesar salad, Chilean sea bass. The flat iron steak and Brussel sprouts were also pretty good but I liked the sea bass, tuna and salad better. Dishes we didn't like: jalapeño grilled cheese sandwich (too cheesy and really basic), cocktails (all the cocktails we ordered were really sweet even though we specifically asked for them to not be made sweet). Stopped by for a drink and a bite on a Saturday around 3pm. They were not very busy and we sat at the bar, no wait. The ambiance is open and comfortable, fun decorated with a modern-vintage take. The service was very attentive and he gave us very good suggestions. We loved our drinks, my husband went for the tiki drink which he said it was dangerous. My coffee martini was delicious, perfect light foam and toasted marshmallow. We ate the pretzel and ahí tuna, food came out at a decent time. The gravy had a butteriness to it that complimented the savory sausage flavor so well, while the pepper seasoning cut through the richness just enough. The consistency was creamy and a perfect sauce to dip everything into. Highly recommend this dish. - Spanish Skillet | Loved all the vegetables in this dish and cracking a couple of over easy eggs on top just livens up the breakfast experience even more. It comes with a side of toast, and if you aren't dipping that into your egg yolks, then dip it into that sausage gravy, lol. I'd give this place 4 stars for service (our server Franco was wonderful and so sweet), but 3 stars for the food. Food took awhile to come out. We ordered the filet mignon ($60) rare, but it came out medium/medium-well. It was so opposite of what we asked for that we had to send it back. Franco immediately saw the issue and remedied it without hesitation. Our second filet was perfectly cooked, but you can tell the quality isn't the best. Not like something you'd get at a steakhouse but with steakhouse prices. It came with mashed potatoes and green beans, which were both good and flavorful. Not terrible, our server asked us if we were ready to order before we even had an opportunity to order cocktails. And then the cocktails took awhile, but they were deliciously made to perfection. I LOVE the house margarita here. Served with crushed ice and a little frothy, in a tall glass and is PERFECTION. Wanted to try a new restaurant, out of our usual. So we found this cute spot. It's located in a newer shopping center. Lots a great stuff in this shopping center, even have Mendocinos farms. It looked like our server had several tables, because we were not greeted right away. It took some time for her come by to greet us and ask for a drink order. When she finally came by, we were ready with our order. We ordered the Brussels sprouts to start. I guess all food is served/cooked in a cast iron skillet, I might have missed the description when decided on this restaurant. Served with chunks of goat cheese, the Brussels sprouts were tasty, but the sauce made them soggy instead of caramelized, which is what we are used to. I order the Cajun pasta, no protein, and my husband ordered the fish and chips. Once again, served in a cast iron skillet, both entrees came out fairly quickly. My pasta was tasty, but nothing special and somewhat pricey for a pasta with no major veggies and protein. The fish and chips it was mid, according to my husband. Fish and chips is his usual go to, and he said he good, but nothing memorable. We also tried their crème Brûlée. It was ok. Our server was nice, but left us dry a few times. The combination of Barr Hill gin, raw honey syrup, and lemon juice is incredibly thirst-quenching, with a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors. The presentation is adorable, too - it comes in a cute honey bear cup. Brussel Sprouts: The roasted Brussels sprouts with sweet chili sauce, crispy bacon, and crumbled goat cheese, and I must say, it was a surprisingly delightful combination. I am absolutely in love with this place! From the food to the service to the ambiance, everything was spot on! I wasn't able to take enough pictures because we were just so excited to eat. We came on a Monday and they had their half off house cocktails and wine bottle special... it was totally worth it! I ordered the Ken-tiki cocktail and my friends had the old fashioned. It was so good and refreshing! Later into the night we ordered a bottle of Pinot noir. For food, we started off the calamari which had a great breading ratio. I had the slow braised coca-cola beef rib. The name already intrigued me so I had to try it! It was fall of the bone, tender perfection. They were nice enough to let me substitute the herb fries for mashed potatoes. My party had the grilled chicken sandwich, short rib sandwich and the Atlantic salmon. Everything was soooo yummy and rich! Our server Lauren was also so sweet and answered all my questions about cocktail recommendations and she even gave us a complimentary ice cream to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. I really hope Julep continues to prosper and stay here! They made my tummy and heart happy. I will definitely be back soon! Interesting. The vibe and decor was just odd. I'll lead with that. It didn't do it for me. The food was good, but a bit bland based on the description. I had the southwest burger and while it tasted fine, it didn't match the description. The cheese was different the very little bbq sauce it did come with had no spice at all. The herb fries were really good though. The main highlight was the staff- everyone was really friendly and attentive. I appreciated how on top of it everyone seemed to be. Based on the environment and food, it won't be my first choice, but I am looking forward to visiting again and trying some different things. read more

The food was delicious and the drinks were crafted well. I had the Chilean sea bass with a side of mashed potatoes and two of their signature cocktails. I loved the decor and wish I had dressed up more so I could have taken some cute pictures. I took 1 star off because the service was lacking. I suspect they were short staffed because the bartender had to walk from the bar to service me. I hope to come back with some friends next time and take pictures! read more

Came back for more! This time it was in the evening for a holiday party. There was a fixed menu and great drinks! The food was great and the service was much better this time around. Loved the decor throughout and in the patio. Great tv's and heat lamps that are adjustable just ask them. The steak was great as was the butter rum cake! Will go back for sure.
