It's a small restaurant but very cozy and quaint. We waited for 45 minutes around 2:15pm on a Tuesday. We decided to wait since there weren't many restaurants and everywhere was crowded. What drew me to this place was their dog menu. This day was special because it was the last day before helping our dog over the rainbow bridge. Employees and even guests were especially sweet to our fur baby! Food* We ordered a variety of things including the tuna sandwich, stuffed mushrooms, burger with squash soup, grilled chicken and biscuit for our dog and hot dog with fries for our toddler. During a road trip, we stopped for dinner in Julian and decided to eat at the Julian Grille. The server seated us right at 5 p.m. at a nice table and the place filled up pretty quickly! It's very popular on weekends. From the menu, our server recommended the hot apple cider, which we ordered an loved. We also got the baked brie as an appetizer and I personally ordered the fettuccini alfredo which I enjoyed. Their menu is very simple, a few entrees, a lot of sandwiches, few soups and various drinks. I ordered a roast beef sandwich which had an amazing aus gu sauce which I can't get over. The flavor was on point! We also ordered the fish and chips which was super crispy and tender. The fish was cut into nugget sizes for maximal crisp factor. It's been about 10 years since we last visited the Julian Grille. The atmosphere is lovely and the servers were very nice and efficient. However we found the food to be average. The beef barely soup was pretty good to start. The complimentary bread was nicely served with whipped butter. The special was lamb Osso Buco with pasta and veggies. The presentation was very nice and but the taste and tenderness was average. Not bad, but not great. The chicken Jerusalem was not my favorite. The veggies and red potatoes were yummy but the chicken breast was very over cooked. In fairness, I prefer dark meat and Restaurants tend to overcook chicken breasts so I don't often order it. We did a staycation on Friday 11-1 nice leisure drive to Julian from SDSU no traffic just the curves I got a little nauseous my friend is accustom to her Vermont roads and flew through Julian! We dined at hidden gem non script house set up on the hilll. We sat outside to enjoy the warmth of the sun we forgot to check in, but quickly greeted in the patio. The crowd arrived after we got seated and lot of older people since kids are still in school. People with lots of friendly dogs around us. The menu is very mixed we had the fried ravioli appetizer and we both had the Ruben sandwich's. Very well prepared and I had the beef barley soup a very tasty soup as my side the corn beef had very little fat and very tender. Becky our server was very personal and professional helping up make our selections. Glad we found a great place and they also have restrooms inside! Highly recommend this charming place. But once she found out we were not going to order the most expensive items on the menu, she forgot all about us. Case in point. She never came back to check up on us. We had to yell at her when she was going by, to tend to other guests. I had asked for a refill on my club soda. And I waited and I waited and I waited. This place was cool. Situated in a place that resembles a house, the staff was super friendly and welcoming. The wait was about 20 minutes and you can't wait inside. I should also note that they do not use technology or you phone number. They literally step outside and yell for you a couple of times to see if you're still around. The food was out of this world but it was pretty darn good. To start, my daughter ordered the spaghetti and meatballs which were pretty basic. I will note that it could've used a little more seasoning in every area of that dish. The fish and chips were pretty good as well but not the greatest. The batter was nice and crispy but I feel the fish used inside wasn't the best quality. The house made tartar sauce elevated the fish for sure. The chips (fries) were took notch. There fries will get you addicted to them as they were seasoned just right, hot, and crispy. Now the star of the show here was the BLT... I highly recommend the BLT... this will be one of the best BLT's you've had. The bacon was crispy, the veggies were fresh and the condiments weren't overdone... you must try the BLT. I have been trying to eat here for years now because every time we checked it was closed but to our surprise it was the only place open and able to seat us right away on a Friday afternoon. I was disappointed that we got seated squished on the side of a back room next to large parties that were on the louder side. I was imagining it to be more of a fine dining, intimate experience as it advertised outside but I felt very displaced with my date. The service was nowhere to be found most of the time and we were forgotten when we were trying to pay at the end. The food was good but nothing really stood out and the specials weren't advertised to us either until we asked what another table ordered. I should have taken a photo of my plate, but I didn't so you'll have to take my word for it. Two of us came here for Taste of Julian. I understand this is a specific event and not something we ordered as a sit down experience, but I wouldn't dine here based on this experience alone. We saw their sign that said "Taste of Julian", which signaled where we should go. We were early and when we got there, the young lady (didn't get her name) was walking out and all she said was "it starts at 12". So we waited until 12 and went back up to get our taste, which was one piece of orange chicken, a small scoop of rice, and a little bit of salad with dressing. The salad said there were walnuts and cranberries, but all we got on our plate was lettuce or spring mix. As I went for the rice, I noticed a tiny worm or caterpillar in it. I showed it to the other person I was with to make sure I was seeing it correctly. I went back up to the young lady and she was leaving again and seemed to be in a hurry. I said can I show this to you real quick? I showed her the worm or caterpillar in my rice and she continued walking away and said "I'll let the chef know". That was it. Not even a minute later she came back up and continued serving the tastes. Not a word more from her so I threw my plate away and left. It seemed like she didn't care at all and my first experience of Taste of Julian was not a great start. Truthfully, we stopped because all else was closed. What an AMAZING experience. Our waitress, Tiffany, was top notch. They accommodated my food allergy and still made the most delicious food. This 1920's cottage was the sweetest atmosphere. Super Clean and surprisingly intimate for such a bustling space. I had salmon. My husband had the tilapia and my Mom had the spaghetti. I recommend all 3 dishes. My favorite was actually their warm bread & butter. We spent $103 for the 3 of us and it was worth every penny. We can't wait to return. Stopping by Julian Grille has become a tradition for me and my close good friends, something we've done coincidentally on the same day in December for the last three years. We came here the first year by chance because the other restaurants we wanted to try were either closed or too busy. We had to sit outside in the cold because the inside was packed here too, but this was around 2pm so the sun was still relatively high. We didn't eat anything but we each tried a couple drinks and MAN I can't tell you how good each of them were. Not only do they have a great menu with some seasonal offerings, but each drink had a flavor profile that warms the soul and could probably cheer up Ebenezer Scrooge. I think at this point I've tried all of their seasonal cocktails (some pictures are attached), and I've even brought my parents here on a separate occasion. I've tried a few of their food items, which are decent but not much more than typical diner items (at a bit higher prices). The service is also akin to those at diners so "take it or leave it." For as long as Julian Grille is open and as long as I visit Julian, I will return every time! read more

We noticed about 4 or 5 workers standing around just chatting. We were served water and a menu. Then it went downhill. We waited and waited. I don't post this lightly but this meal was trash. We just had one of the worst dining experiences of our life at the Grille. Everything was frozen food. The ravioli, the chicken, even the veggies. It was offensive. Soulless. Careless. Like, do they think we're being fooled? Do they think no one notices how bad it is? There is no effort made to present it nice, just congealing on my plate looking like I went through a cafeteria line.. except we paid $100 for it. How is nothing fresh? How do they think this is acceptable for the price? The sign at the front asks you to "please be nice" so we just paid and didn't say anything, left our food on the table and said we had to go. It was vile. The service was great, a nice staff. We should have known we were in trouble tho when the server had not tried the dishes we asked about. BAKED BRIE: somehow had no flavor. Served with box crackers and apple slices from an apple that had no business with Brie. I love apples and cheese but just NO. And pineapple? Umm... in Julian? Know where you are. Serve food that makes sense here. Apples DO make sense obviously but not this one. JALAPEÑO RAVIOLI: obviously something frozen and deep fried. They did not make this. It's processed to death. Not a fancy $17 appetizer. You're not fooling anyone! CHICKEN WHATEVER: Don't remember what it was called, doesn't matter. Frozen round chicken breast, yes round and smashed... tasted slightly rancid or like it sat out for a long time. It was dense and just tasted old and sad. It wasn't fresh, that's my point. No idea what the sauce on it was trying to be but it was just so unappealing. Served with over seasoned frozen veggie melody (WHY?!?!) and "chef potatoes" that were a damn inedible tragedy. SAUSAGE FETTUCCINI: this was absolutely disgusting. A bowl of oil and bad meat with some store bought pasta. This is something you'd see a real chef hold and tip the bowl to drain all the grease out of it. I can't even tell you how gross it looked. My favorite part was watching the busser scrape food off the cloth table covers and reset the table on the old used dirty cloth. Nice. Real nice. The atmosphere was fantastic. You can dine right in the garden listening to the fountain or inside where it feels like a friend's place. The service was friendly and they tolerated our indecisiveness. I wanted to like it more but my trout dish wasn't that great. It was ok but not memorable or even pretty good. Popped in for lunch on a Friday with our dog. Really appreciated how dog friendly they were and offering a dog menu! We were greeted and asked for seating outside. The hostess was kind and cleaned a table for us. We had a hiccup with one of our meals. The plate was returned and they took the item off of our check. The the rest of the food was ok. Had they had an assortment of crackers and make it a few dollars cheaper I would have loved it. I got the wrangler with the au chu, extremely tasty! And filling!! I personally just needed a bit of salt and it was as fantastic. My boyfriend got the trout and y'all that was surprisingly delicious. Light with a delicious seasoning. Julian Grille is 7 miles up from Santa Ysabel in a town called Julian. We came up here for lunch which is at the 4,000 ft level so 78 at the bottom and 67 up at Julian. This cute little restaurant which was a home now a restaurant was packed! Of course we had to eat outdoors. The lunch was fantastic! First we ordered the stuffed mushrooms they came 6 in a bowl with a cream sauce that tasted very good. I ordered the trout which had no bones and cooked perfectly. The skin was crispy and the rice was flavorful! I also loved the beef barley soup and world eat a bowl of it! My wife had a BLT with the cream of mushroom soup. I tried her soup and it all was delicious! I took some of her soup and laid it on top of my trout which I thought gave it a more intense flavor our server was Laronda and was very pleasant. read more

We chose this place because they had a liquor license. We were looking to have some mimosas and bloodies with lunch. The mimosa was a glass of orange juice with a splash of champagne when it should be the other way around, it should be yellow. The bloody, while visibly appealing was just okay. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich minus the pineapple. It was so dry it was hard to swallow, luckily I had a glass of orange juice to wash it down!! Perhaps the pineapple would have helped but as much as I like pineapple it didn't seem right on a sandwich. My boyfriend ordered the tuna melt which somehow was the blandest tuna I've ever had and the cheese wasn't melted. The fries are amazing as were the pickles! The staff was very friendly and timely. Cute little restaurant in Julian which lots of indoor or outdoor seating. My tuna sandwich and creamy chicken noodle soup was good and I enjoyed myself. My husband said his pot pie (which was a special the day we went) was a little on the watery side and looked like my soup. The staff were nice but we had to ask for refills on our soda and water. Sat outside in 45 degree weather but they have heaters to keep you warm (note: table in the corner looks at the fireplace but doesn't get the heat from it so we were really cold). We had the orange chicken and the chicken Alfredo: both had good flavor but the orange chicken had a ton of burnt chunks in it. We heard the table next to us complain about the ribeye being un-chewable (that stinks because that dish is $30 on their menu!). They have an interesting coffee selection with all different nationalities. The Mexican coffee and the hot chocolate were good. Lentil soup was a little salty but everything else was good. Quiet little town and this place seemed like the busiest. I really like the lighting outside: maybe next time we're here, the inside will be open. Such a lovely place! My daughter and I came in on Sunday (4/25/21). We had such a great lunch. We were greeted and seated by a very friendly hostess around 11:45am for lunch. Our server was out super fast with water and to take drink orders. Once our sodas came out, and we were ready to order. I had the Reuben and the Wee One ordered their enormous 8oz burger. Both sandwiches were super tasty; as a matter of fact this was one of the best reubens I've eaten in a long while. The service was really friendly and down to earth. Our waters never went less than half-filled, so extra points for that. And we felt taken care of without being smothered. So they definitely earned my 5 stars. Had lunch at the Julian Grill on a recent day trip to Julian. My daughter had been there on a previous visit and since she liked it so much, and we were together, we had to go there. It's a small/quaint place that is a converted residence. When you enter the restaurant ypu are actually walking into the former living room. There are three main dinning areas and ours had a fie place. The decore is warm and inviting and that absolutely puts you in a comfortable mood. The service and food were excellent. I had the tuna melt with corn and crab chowder. Just the right portions. The pictures I took reveal the other items we ordered. This was a great experience and that warm, inviting atmosphere, was quite welcoming - especially on a cool and rainy day in Julian.
