Our experience was really not a good one mostly because the hornets were basically on the hunt for my husband's burger. There were 3 hornets that swarmed our table and no amount of swatting helped. At first, we were annoyed but continued to eat. When another guest at the table next to us told the waitress and us that he was just stung, the waitress' response to us (while watching the hornets swarm our table) was "so do you guys want to go boxes?"... we had just gotten our food. - all the stars for her response and the restaurants' lack of action despite knowledge of the problem (see review from a month ago about the hornets!) Let's start by saying what a cute little place this is. Due to Covid, you don't really find many places open, but this was. We sat at the Beer Garden, eventhough the sun was a little strong, there were lots of plants and trees for shade and cooling. And that truly isn't saying much. I got a roast beef sandwich with provolone, peppers and a jus for 14$. Nothing in flavor or presentation to write home about. It was a mediocre quality sandwich at tourist prices. I should have just heated some deli thin slices myself at home for cheaper and brought my own picnic with me. The highlight for me was the patio area- the canopy of vines, sunlight just breaking through the trees. The people-watching. Service was friendly but lackluster. They never refilled my water. They didn't come back for the check so I finally walked that inside. Would I eat here again? Yea, but I wouldn't choose this place on my own. 3.5 Stars! My friend and I came here after devouring our Julian Pies from across the street and taking a quick stroll along the main drag. Since we already had our dessert, we weren't too hungry and opted for some appetizer salads as our meal. They are each around $10 to $12 and are a decent size. I got the spinach salad, and they provide the dressing on the side. I appreciate that, since overdressed salads are often soggy and bleh. It had a good amount of nuts, red onions and cranberries. As per recommended by our server, I got the cherry Julian Cider. It was tasty, and sweet. Not too alcohol flavored, which works well for me. Not a fan of the dry ciders and I'm a light weight, so 1 drink is more than I can usually handle. We sat outside on a warm day and were grateful for the umbrellas that provided shade from the sun. Staff was really nice and helpful and the salads met our expectations. When we were asked if we wanted a slice of pie for dessert, it was so tempting! If I could give this restaurant a zero star I would. It's the worst restaurant ever! This has been only my third time in Julian and this was my first time in this restaurant. Coming in, we saw a sign that says " diners who wants outside seating must come inside to check in with the host " which we did. She said it's a 30-40minutes waiting which I said it's oaky. I asked her how are we gonna know if it's our time, and she said, I'm going to look for you. I said okay! She never give instructions taht we couldn't and are not allowed to sit on any of the empty tables and chairs outside. So, like other restaurants I assumed it's okay to sit to any of the chairs as there's many of them were empty. We sat there and patiently waiting for someone to come to us until two waitresses came up to us and asked us if we're already served and if we have the menu, etc. I said no! Couple minutes later the hostess came out and started yelling at us because it was not our time to be served yet and told and yelled one of the waitress to break down our table! And I was like, what the hell is going on! I did not know that we're not allowed to sit on any of the Empty tables until we were called for her to act so rude In front of us and everybody. Instead of getting pissed, I asked my son to wait patiently and there are just some misunderstanding. Finally after being ignored by the hostess, one of the server came to us and asked us what we would like to order. She's very nice. We ordered and waited just to get served with a food with a hair on it. I was like " omg! There's a hair on my food! " laughing. She grabbed it immediately and brought me a new one. I still ate it but I did not expected it to be like a sandwich as it says " Julian grille " I was expecting a traditional corned beef with cabbage and carrots not a bread. It tasted okay but I'm not a bread person so I really did not enjoyed it. I still left them a good tip and went inside to use their restroom just to see the hostess yelling at the customers again, telling everyone she cannot accommodate anybody anymore for their lunch menu. She's rude as hell! This woman should not be running a restaurant if she does not know how to organize, coordinate and treat customers right! It's not even a high end restaurant for her to act like a superior from anyone else. What an embarrassment! If I was just not in my good mood, I would left the restaurant already. It's not that great to accept any poor treatment. She's lucky I'm tired and don't want to walk around with an empty stomach otherwise I will not put up with it. What a poor service and serving me of a food with a hair in it??? You gotta be kidding me! Act arrogant if you can serve me " perfections " and I'll accept it with no complains. Otherwise, be nice! My husband and I visited Julian for a lunch date. Decided to have lunch here because of our first experience was amazing. Definitely a place that gives a nice and warm ambiance. Very friendly service. I decided to get their rib eye steak and a choice of a cup of soup. My husband opted for their French dip roast beef sandwich, which he devoured in minutes. The au jous was so flavorful. We had an amazing time and a heavy and hearty meal. This place feels like home. Definitely a must visit if you are in the area and want some good food. Super cute and quaint. It will definitely draw you in. The food is a joke. Ordered a hot open faced roast beef sandwich with peppers and cheese. I think they got the meat out of the deli section at the grocery store and slapped it on a bun with frozen veggies. My companion ordered a burger. Patty was frozen. Disgusting. Don't eat here. Have to agree with most of the reviews here. A little overpriced for what you get. I ordered a 10oz steak with potatoes and vegetables. Steak was ok but nothing special. Vegetables were lacking in quantity. Sauce over them was excellent though. The wife ordered lobster ravioli and a nice salad. She was happy with her meal. Service was ok. I think they are understaffed. I never had my drink refilled. Ambiance was nice. A few bugs outside but that's ok. Overall we probably will not return and check some of the other restaurants in the area. But that said for a get away day it served it's purpose if you don't want to wait for a seat in other restaurants. read more

Well tickle my chin as I enjoyed this prime rib in it's appetizer form. The ambience is house turned to restaurant chic. Service was fine. They are very friendly and also efficient. This was a nice respite from drinking cider and cider beer. Not a bad place to grab a bite if you are around, across from the Julian Pie Co. shop (which had long lines - note: you can buy them at your grocery stores too). Nice, relaxing and quiet atmosphere so not your typical restaurant experience. This was my second time visiting here. First time was 5 years ago for breakfast with friends. All was well! I had the idea to recommend the place to my husband since I had a satisfactory initial first visit and we wanted to have a nice dinner. To our disappointment the service was absolutely horrible. We ordered the salmon salad to start which was actually pretty good. However we both order the rib eye with seasonal vegetables. The steak was under seasoned and low quality. And the seasonal vegetables were actually a frozen mix! How could they??? We ordered 2 Tito's with soda water. The first round tasted like there was zero vodka in them. So our 2 round we order as a double. When the check arrived the price for the alcohol is just INSANE! We asked our server to confirm the price was correct. She did not look at the receipt at all and told us it is correct. I attached the receipt to this reveiw. 4 Titos soda waters are $15.00 each, $60.00! And to add an extra shot to make our second round a double was $11.75 each, $23.50, ! In that case each drink should of been $11.75, not $15. Came here with a group of friends last weekend and we didn't have a pleasant experience. One of my friends ended up finding a hair in his food and I had to go inside and flag someone down since our server didn't come back to check on us to see how things were. They never apologized for the inconvenience and didn't refund his money, simply told us they'll have another plate coming. My other friend asked our server, and two other servers for some ranch and they never gave her any, they all forgot and started serving other people. Food was okay. My partner ordered the cheese quesadilla with fries and i got the pulled pork with a house salad and their house dressing. The servers and hostesses were delightful. It took a bit of time for our food to come but that shows how busy they were. The room we were seated in was a bit small, it had 3 tables available but i was hesitant seeing it's still covid I'd like to try not to be too close to others. It didn't help the couple that were close to us were kinda "karen" types. I felt bad for the server as the customer seemed v entitled and impatient. I came here at the recommendation of one of my top Yelp friends. Plus we were eating late on a Sunday, and after 6 there are fewer choices. But I was glad we came here. My friend had the peach chicken and found it delicious, not to sweet. I had the chicken with hollandaise sauce and artichokes. A couple of the artichoke hearts needed to be trimmed better as they had sharp ends, but other than that the chicken breast was very tender and the sauce delicious. Veggies were like your 1950s-bred grandma's veggies: steamed within an inch of their lives. I would love it if they'd try roasting them, but perhaps they are from frozen. Their pie was phenomenal, though. This is my second visit to The Julian Grille. I don't remember what I had to eat the first time, I just remember having some wine and it was very, very good. Nope, I don't remember what kind of wine it was. This time around with my sister we enjoyed some good food, wine and had good service in the little cottage restaurant. We started off with Baked Brie with crackers, fruit and a side of their Apple/Pecan Balsamic dressing. Our main dish was seared Salmon with veggies, BLT on rye bread, Julian Chicken Salad and Potato Leek soup. The soup is drooling, delicious! We ordered some of their dressing to go. The Julian Chicken salad was just OK, I would be OK if I didn't order that the next time out. We were seated on the indoor patio, you have a small view of Main street. The service was kind of so-so as we entered the restaurant. But as we were seated it became much better service. My sister and I enjoyed our lunch in beautiful Julian. read more

Tiffany was so kind and welcoming to us coming into town after long hike on the PCT. The place was charming and cozy. We sat in the cute closed in porch. But the beer garden looked lovely too. I had some local wine. And the linguini with prawns and lobster sauce. My partner had the rib eye. We both cleared our plates happily. Tiffany offered more bread for the good dipping sauce. She even offered us her home for doing laundry. She gave us lots of favorite spots and as well as where to catch her mom in the heart of the cute downtown at the Hearth.
