We ate here many years ago during our first visit to Julian. We liked it so much it was our restaurant of choice when we recently returned. I ordered the Chicken Spinosa, my husband, the Rib Eye Steak. Both tasted delicious. The side of Sauteed Mushrooms was so-so, but the Chocolate Wipe Out Cake (which I had ordered the first time around) was just as good as I remembered. Moist and just sweet and chocolaty enough. Food aside, it was the service that brings me to write this review. We were there on a Sunday for dinner. There was only one server, Tiffany, and one helper (who brought bread, water, etc.) for a totally packed house. We were told there's always just one server on Sunday as it's usually not a busy night. Tiffany and her helper were busy as bees, but always friendly with positive attitudes. Neither of them exhibited any negativity nor frustration, just graciously asked us for a little patience and displayed smiles and provided great service. I'm sorry they had to work so hard that night, but I was glad we had a seasoned professional staff at the helm. It will, again, be our restaurant of choice for our next visit to Julian. read more

Absolutely horrible service and tasteless food. Granted, they had some staffing issues going on, but that doesn't prevent them from being apologetic, humble and make up for the long wait. No, the guy rudely answered me In negative when I asked if they could bring the grilled sandwich early. My 8-yr old was very hungry and it was almost close to 2 pm and we had waited for an hour already. Food was finally served ( after asking abt few times) and it was no good except for the side of the salad. We were hungry, so we finished it all anyways. One very strange behavior from the server. He was going around to select few tables and asking if food is good or not. Did it few times. I didn't see him checking on us that much. Went to the snow for the day and stopped to get lunch at this lovely restaurant. Their patio is dog friendly and super cute. Food 4/5 I got the pasta primavera but with no cheese, mushrooms, and olives; with a side of fries. The pasta was delicious, noodles were just right and not over cooked. The sauce was a bit thin, but it was seasoned great. There were also artichoke hearts in it! Which wasn't mentioned but I was super happy about. The side of fries were probably one of my favorite parts, they were crispy and seasoned to perfection. The husband got the chicken pot pie as well as a meatball soup I believe it was. Both which were delicious he said, the soup smelled like heaven. Our friends got the Ruben sandwich and a tuna melt. All of them loved their sandwiches just felt it was weird both pieces of bread were on the bottom with sauce on them and the meat on top. So you have to assemble your own sand which and leaves the bottom piece of bread a little soggy. The seasonal drinks were great, I got the Julian mulled cider which was perfect in the chilly weather. And my friends got an Apple cider mimosa, which I tried and was great especially with the brown sugar around the rim. Over all the food was great and I would definitely come back to try it again. My wife and I went to Julian grill with our two kids. The hostess was nice, our waitress was sweet. We were seated promptly and everything was fine. We ordered a bottle of wine and kids drinks. They came no problem. We then ordered the mushrooms Rockefeller as an appetizer and our dinner. The appetizer took 45 minutes to arrive and was horrible. The green filling in the mushrooms was not good, and the berrenaisse sauce was bland. Our wine, a bottle of Prisoner was excellent thank god. Our food came, and it was no better than the appetizer. My lemon chicken was dry and the sauce tasted like it was out of a can. My wife's Jerusalem chicken was so bad she didn't finish it. My sons hotdog bun was soggy, but the hotdog was good. Pretty happy with our visit. THE PROS: Prime rib is perfectly tender and cooked just right. The chicken fettuccine had the perfect amount of extra sauce so it wasn't dry and came with extra parmesan on the side. The Georgia peach chicken was ok; wouldn't order it again. There were 12 of us celebrating a friend's birthday. The one waitress/hostess/bartender did an outstanding job taking care of us, as did her assistant/bus-person. My burger was fair. Big, but only so-so juicy. The bun was way too small, but okay. Fries were great. My wife enjoyed her peach-chicken, although I found canned peaches for a $27 entree to be poor. The salads were all very good, as was the steak ordered. The ambiance was very nice. One of my biggest issues was the website. It hadn't been updated for years. Showing lower prices and then being shown the present menu was a little startling. One man wanted the entire group to leave because of it. Cooler heads prevailed. We all enjoyed the evening. Between the inattentive service, tasteless food, and bad attitude of the manager I will never return to this restaurant. My friend and I went for a late lunch around 2:00pm on a Friday afternoon. There were very few people in town, We were taken to the enclosed patio, so we would have a view (of the street). There were three other parties seated there. Our server was relatively inattentive. She did as little as she could. I had to get up out of my seat to get her if I needed something. We had the gumbo. It did not taste like they used the traditional andouille sausage and the sausage that they did use overwhelmed any other flavors in the soup. My friend and I both had the French dip sandwich. The meat was tasteless. The au jus was tasteless. Salt didn't help. I got up to find our server and ask for horseradish. We originally asked her for the creamy kind. Still no flavor. We asked for the fresh grated horseradish. That gave us a little flavor. When we received our bill we saw a 3% surcharge. I asked the server about it and she tried to explain it to me and after a little conversation she left. We never saw her again. I know what the charge was for and I object to it. It is to offset the raise of minimum wage. In my opinion, this should be done transparently by raising your menu prices, not by an add on fee when you receive your bill. A lady who I think was the manager came over to talk to me and she was very defensive and rude. I told her I knew what the charge was for and she had me tell her. She agreed that I was correct in saying it was to offset the minimum wage raise. My friend and I both felt she was rude and insulting when she insisted that the 3% charge was "obvious" on the menu. (It was a small paragraph that neither one of us saw.) When I told her that I felt the menu prices should be adjusted instead of adding on a surcharge, to be completely transparent, she went on and on telling me that the owner was old fashioned and the restaurant business was so competitive. She eventually offered to give me the "Local's discount", telling me that it was more than the surcharge. Who knew that there was such a thing? Nobody asked us if we were locals when we walked in. Well, she only gave it to me and not to my friend, but we let it go. She brought me back my adjusted bill and I had to ask a different server who was now in the area to take my payment, as no one came to pick it up. The manager (?) and our server were too busy talking about the incident in an area just behind the podium at the front door. I didn't see them, but it was very easy to hear them. So unprofessional. The food at Julian Grille is mediocre at best. I had severe food poisoning last year from a walnut salad with chicken. I have never been so sick in my life! My friend had a salad with Salmon and got sick, but not as sick as I was. I called the Grille to let them know how violently ill I had become after eating the salad, and the hostess was very nice, but did not offer a solution, and the chef never called me nor did he address the issue. I decided to call the Health Department because I did not want anyone else to suffer like I had. The Health Department, after visiting Julian Grille, discovered a refrigeration problem. The Grille never apologized, but apparently fixed the refrigeration issue. I will NEVER eat there again, and I advise you to go somewhere else to eat in Julian unless you are a risk- taker. read more

I'm a waitress myself and if that's considered slammed for you , honey you wouldn't be able to handle downtown San Diego! Maybe it's good you're there ! I hated the vibe so much that I told my boyfriend I'm just gonna go to the car and just ask for the check and do not tip at allll ! I'm always on the lookout for dog-friendly restaurants and after a day of driving the back roads of San Diego county, I ended up in Julian. It had been years since I was last here and back then I just drove through on the way to Anza Borrego. I saw that the Julian Grille had a patio and asked if it was OK if I could order dinner on the patio with my dog at my side. The waiter said no problem. This gets an automatic extra star in my book. The wait staff was very nice and efficient and even brought out some water for Cody. I ordered a rib-eye steak and my friend ordered the filet mignon with mushroom sauce. Food was pretty good, but a tad pricy. The mushroom sauce was really good on the filet and came with veggies and your choice of rice or potato. My rib-eye hit the spot and was satisfied with my rice and veggies. The Julian Grille is probably one of the nicer restaurants in Julian and the indoor seating had a romantic feel to it from what I saw. Plenty of people doing road trips on motorcycles or cars use Julian as a stopover or rest stop while cruising around the hills of San Diego county. My Pasadena City College tour bus finally stopped at Julian after leaving Dudley's Bakery and Julian Pie Company in Santa Ysabel. We got there by 1215pm, and I was starving for protein. For $10.42 (total and taxes) - the home made chicken pot pie was a joke. Even Marie Calendar makes'em better. The crust on top looked and tasted nasty and so hollow inside. Looked like a mutated, deformed Chinese crueller that you would eat with porridge. The only thing I liked about it was the chicken pieces which were big chunks and they were soft and tender and I needed protein before I went venturing around Julian. The veggies in it was alright, but for $10.42 - their Specials - lol, I rather gor Marie Calendars instead. The restaurant settings was nice and it was converted to a restaurant from a house. Service was decent, though the girl who took my food and order didn't looked too thrilled working and hardly smiled. Nonetheless, she refilled my water as needed and checked on me. Though, I wasn't too thrilled with the hostess/manager. She eyed me like I was gonna rob the place, and had me wait a while, and once a crowd came in after, that's when she acknowledged me, but got my name wrong even though I said "Kim" and I dunno how I got the name Vicky???
