This is my dad's all time favorite brunch/lunch spot around and I can see why. The place is tiny but adorable and has a very open feel. While there was a chef's flare in classic execution, I think I just prefer a bit more density in flavor. There were hints of mastery, but they were poised for a bland pallet and ultimately felt like overspending to me. It felt very catered to senior citizens. The aesthetic is extremely 2004 Bosnian art teacher. It reminds me of the days when maroon, purple, and gold-yellow walls with sepia tinted frosted glass sconces were in fashion and I hate it. read more

My wife and I came here a little after 1 PM on a weekday. It was busy, which is always a good sign: this place is really hard to spot from the street, which tells me the locals know a good thing when they see it. The first thing you see when you walk in is an open kitchen, but the head chef wearing a tall chefs hat. This is very cool: not just the tall hat, but the fact that they're confident enough to have an open kitchen, we can see what they're doing. The downside is when your food is up, and you have to hope your server notices that the food is up. This is what happened us: the food waited a little while before the server brought it out. Fortunately, the food was very good. My chicken pita was loaded with chicken, but the problem was that the tzatziki sauce was very loose...almost watery. The home fries and a crispy, buttery taste to them, and the pea soup I got to start was also very good. My wife got salmon cakes, which featured something I really see in salmon cakes at restaurants: a lot of salmon! The tarragon sauce that came with it was also excellent, and the asparagus was also a nice accompaniment. The creamy dressing on her Caesar salad was also a highlight. This place is a little bit pricey, but the quality is very good. read more

Nice quiet and intimate environment. Wasn't too busy on a Friday. We had the house made boar sausage omelet with northern beans and the puppet pancake with mixed berry compote. It was okay. The omelet wasn't extremely flavorful, but the beans certainly made it filling. The boar sausage was a little light on flavor profile. The food at Jumps is delicious, and I have not had a terrible experience here, but that's the best I can say. The food is better than average for sure. It's pretty tasty actually, since they use *some* unexpected ingredients like specialty cheeses, meats or mushrooms here and there, which make a dish stand out. Some of the quality of ingredients is above average while others are standard. The menu is small, if you dine here at brunch time, the only offerings are a few breakfast foods and no lunch options. The atmosphere looks and feels very much like a hotel restaurant; it's clean, usually not too crowded, so you don't have to wait to get seated... There is room for improvement however in pricing and service. For pricing, I thought the prices were fair, until I dined there on a Sunday for brunch and repeatedly watched the servers make mimosas. Mimosas at Sunday brunch were, of course, selling like hotcakes, and each one was made by filling a champagne glass with 4/5's canned orange juice and then 1/5 bubbly. The price is $9. I couldn't see the type of sparkling wine being used, but it shouldn't be that high quality if they're mixing it with OJ and I feel like $9 would be a fair price for a full glass of bubbly alone, not a tablespoon of bubbly on top of canned OJ. Also adding it to the top of the orange juice was a ruse on their part so it wouldn't mix with the heavy canned OJ, therefore that first sip would seem as though the glass was brimming with sparkly. My $11 omelet portion was perfect for me, but small compared to most restaurants. Also it is served with toast, but no potato. So for $11-$12 you get (a delicious) small omelet and standard toast. The restaurant is not huge, yet the staff is consistently in a frenzy. They are always visibly rushed, which does not make for a pleasant dining experience. The few times I've been there, I have not seen a designated hostess or bartender, so I'm not sure if they ever have one, and this could account for why the servers have to fly around in a hurry. The last time I dined there, our server took our drink order, took our food order, dropped off the food/drinks, dropped off the bill. That was it. She not once checked in on us or made eye contact with us. She only spoke to us to get our orders. She never said, "how is everything?", "is there anything else I can get you?", "have a nice day..." Nothing. *Not a word* when she placed the bill book on our table. Oh, she did say one more thing to me when she brought me my food, "careful your plate is very hot." And it was very hot. Meaning it must have sat under the heat lamp for quite some time before she brought it to me. No paying customer wants their food sitting under heat lamps for too long, or have be wary dining from an extra hot plate. Jumps' food is delicious, but I would not recommend it to a friend. read more

I think unless you're from Grosse Pointe, you won't enjoy this restaurant. The service is extremely bad, the food is mediocre at best, and they don't take criticism well either. It's actually comical to me how bad this place is (and how well it personifies Grosse Pointe in general). We came here with a friend who lives in Grosse Pointe, and absolutely adores this restaurant. While most of my experiences in this parochial little town has been unpleasant, I assumed that coming here with a local would mean better service. Nope, we were wrong. We had the special that night, a walleye with chestnut stuffing and butternut squash puree -- sounds delicious right? The fish was half raw in certain parts (and don't get me wrong, I love raw sushi and eat it at least 2X a week) but this had the worst sickening texture of sliminess when you bite in. The fish was also painfully bland, and we poured on the salt and pepper to try and mask the odd flavor of fishiness that kept coming through. The stuffing was just bread... not really chestnut, and the puree was a smear for decorative purposes. I also had the baked alaska for dessert -- nothing special, just ice cream that's been really frozen with some marshmallow on top. The funny part came when our friend felt he should provide well intentioned feedback to the owner, giving many of the points I mentioned above. The owner's response was: well everyone else liked it just fine, I'll tell the chef, and abruptly walked away. What?? Where I come from (the rest of us lowly class citizens of metro Detroit, who lack the sophistication of Grosse Pointe), when a regular customer (or any customer) dislikes the food, you offer free dessert, or apologize for the experience or offer to discount the bill or SOMETHING. You never argue with the customer and walk away rudely. I'm told that their salmon is great, so maybe if you want to take a chance on bad treatment and potentially bad food... it could be worth a shot. read more

I have been coming here for years, can't believe I haven't written a review yet. The food is SO good and the prices are very reasonable. For lunch I almost always order whichever fish they have on special, or the salmon sandwich without the bread. Usually around $13. For dinner I always order the lobster tails. You get two lobster tails, half an acorn squash, a delicious wild rice and another delicacy on the plate and it is only $32. We like it so much we had our son's rehearsal dinner here. I went here for lunch today. Our waitress was horrible. She seemed more concerned with having long-winded conversations with one of the many patrons over 60 years old, than she did waiting on myself and my fellow lunchmate. I'm not exactly young (I'm 35), but she had no interest in taking care of my table. It took forever to get straws for our drinks, our food took exceptionally long, and the bill didn't come fast. My friend was in somewhat of a hurry (she had an hour for lunch, and we were still late getting back!), and the service was putrid - she was short and abrupt with us throughout the entire service. The food: I ordered the "petite tenderloin sandwich," which wasn't bad, but the meat was actually tough. Parts seemed dry and over cooked, parts seemed rare (which is fine with me), but the whole thing was tough to bite through. On several occasions I had to try to hold the meat so I could pull away and try to chew through the sandwich at the same time. The horseradish sauce was spicy, but amazing. It actually burned my nose a bit on one occasion, but I like it that way. Overall I'd say the sandwich was good, but it would have been great if the meat was better. The bread and toppings were good. She had the burger, which was just mediocre. She said she felt it "needed something," it was a little dry and a little bland. She generally doesn't put anything on a burger when it's made well, but had to douse this one with ketchup. Not something you want out of a $10 burger. We both had the redskin potatoes for our side, which were good, but the presentation was horrible. They looked more like coney island hash browns. The ambiance: The worst part of the experience is the atmosphere. It looks more like an average diner than a fine dining establishment. I love the sign, its contemporary nature, etc., but the inside looks more like a big boys than something that fits the sign. I am slowly coming to understand why Grosse Pointe seems so isolated from the rest of Metro Detroit. If you had as many gems as it does, you might want to keep from people coming in to ruin a good thing too. Jumps is one of those institutions that would get a lot of props if it were in central Oakland County, but since it is in Grosse Pointe you rarely hear anything about the place. I recently took the time to partake at the restaurant that is nestled on the first floor of a small office building that has doctors and accountants are tenants. From reading the reviews, I was afraid it would be a little too expensive for my tender wallets, but I got there at lunchtime and was happy to see most of their fare is under $10. My lunch guest and I started our meal with coffee and tea. The coffee was given a thumbs up by my meal guest and I was happy to pick from a well-stocked selection of loose leaf teas. I rocked the Earl Grey - feel me now! I was stuck on the sandwich list for lunch. It was a toss-up between the Grilled Bavarian Ham, the Seared Salmon and the ... Turkey Burger. Sorry, it had a fancy adjective or transitive verb, but I am at a loss for it right now. Anyway, I ended up picking said turkey burger, which came with avocado, roasted red onion, spinach and tomato on a kaiser bun. I got it with cole slow with had chunkier cabbage leaves than your average slaw. Verdict: Happy Hubert - 1; Disappointed Hubert - 0. My lunch guest was not as enthused with her choice, which was a seared perch sandwich with romaine lettuce and tomato confit on french bread. She felt the sandwich was greasy. Although, I had a few bites and I loved it. I did not think the sandwich, but I do not like dry sandwiches. There has to be some sort of edible emollient to help the bread down the hatch. There was an issue I had with the sandwich though. Weird thing too, I believe there was little bits on bone in the fish. I do not eat perch often, but I cannot find myself ever finding it cool to have bits of bone in anything. I mean, if I was told in advance, it would be my deal not the chefs. I was not given such notice though. We actually came for breakfast, but we could not get out of the house before noon. On Saturday, breakfast ends at 11am; 10am during the week. On Sundays, it is served all day from 8am to 2pm. We are thinking about going back soon for breakfast. All in all, it was a pleasurable dining experience. I had an apple, almond and dried cherry bread pudding topped with a bourbon custard for dessert. It was an interesting mix of sweet, moist, crunchy, tart and smokiness. I would do it again, most definitely. I imagine I will stick to breakfast and lunch here. Any place that makes a confit for a sandwich will probably make a doozy of a dinner that I should not try to afford at the moment. Heh read more

Since Jumps expanded and moved upstairs I no longer enjoy eating here. I've been here 4 times since the move and have been disappointed in the food & service. The waitresses act like they are doing you a favor waiting on you, they're not friendly and not helpful. The food is pretty good but not great considering the prices. Even the selection is pretty limited. Not on my radar as a place I consider anymore when I'm going out to eat. read more

I love Jumps for the food, hate it for the rude service. Been there maybe 6-7 times. ignored at the door every time (maybe I should wait until I'm 75 and wear a tux). Food has always been excellent. Last time I got the Tenderloin tip iceberg wedge salad and was amazed at the presentation and flavor. Waitstaff and hostess have always been a bit cold- outright rude the last time I visited. My date was running late and couldn't find the restaurant (I like how it is a little hidden, but I guess not when you are meeting someone). She called the restaurant and asked for directions and said she was late to meet me. She described me to the hostess so the hostess brought the phone to my table while she was giving directions and was MAKING FACES into the phone as if I wasn't there. My first time at Jumps was during the breakfast hours. I'm young, 22, and came alone to eat. As a server myself, my first reaction to a one person customer who is young would be to complain and expect a low tip. I was very pleased to have my waitress greet me with a great attitude. She was very friendly and was quick with my coffee and refills. She read the specials with profession memory and sold me on the quiche of the day. It was presented beautifully with a good portion slice and a colorful arrangement of fresh fruit. My meal and service was a 10/10. Being in the restaurant business myself, I have high expectations of my service whenever I go out. I decided to make that my new go to spot as I like trying new dishes. So I came here a few days later a little after 11 to find out I missed the breakfast so I was forced to try a lunch item. Then my experience started to go downhill... My waitress (not the same one as my last visit) came up to me without a hello. Immediately asked what I wanted to drink. When I asked about the specials, she handed me a Special list. I think it is more professional to memorize but it was okay. I started with a bowl of chicken chili. Good but too many white beans. I still didn't make up my mind for lunch so I asked for more time. Once I decided on the Chicken Alfredo, I closed my menu and made it obvious I was ready to order. I observed my waitress as she had 2 other tables and me. It took her 11 minutes to come back to me to take my order. Meanwhile my diet coke and water were just ice cubes in glasses and I was thirsty. I have an issue with empty glasses and having to ask for a refill. My pasta came and it looked amazing. My waitress asked me if I cared for fresh pepper, I said yes please but the odd thing is she didn't bring it with her. Usually you bring the grinder with you but whatever. She also asked if I cared for a piece of bread. I said no thank you. Within a minute or less she comes back with a piece of bread on a plate then says to herself, "oh yeah pepper". I have made mistakes myself with my own tables but this was pretty pathetic. In no way do I mean offense to this but some servers who are aged should not be working still. My husband has been trying to take me here for years. We finally came with his parents this weekend, and while it was good, I don't see what all the fuss is about. The place has no ambiance at all and is located in the basement of an office buidling. It only has about 10 tables, along with about 10 chairs at the counter. Prices range from average (about $6 for pancakes and basic eggs) to high ($14 for benedicts). Service is good, if a little zealous on the coffee refills. My husband had the pumpkin panckakes which were fantastic and topped with an acron brown butter. I had the crab and lobster benedict which I was dissapointed with. The crab cakes were really thin and a bit overcooked - and they were filled with "filler" like corn, rather than all crab and losbter. The english muffins were tough and the eggs were undercooked - I asked for poached hard and when I cut in to the egg I still had a large river of yolk spilling out. Definately not with the $14 price tag. I'm sure I'll be back at some point when I am in GP and I'll try something else. Its a very popular place, but for my money I'd rather just get a $4 omelette at Coney. read more
