Two words: Szechuan Dumplings. This place is a must visit in Minneapolis. From the cozy and slightly dark atmosphere to the extensive menu, this place does not disappoint! When we visited, Cherry was our server and was also the hostess. We visited in September and they were understaffed. Almost every table was full (yes, there was social distancing) and she was moving from table to table so gracefully. Probably one of the best dining experiences I've had. The Drinks: I tried a few drinks on their menu but they weren't really my style. One thing I'd love to see when we're back to in-person dining is a more extensive wine list. They do have Coke/Pepsi products for those who forego the alcohol. Oh, and they have great green tea! The Food: Apps: Szechuan Dumplings & Sticky Rice Dumplings. Both fantastic. The sauce for the Szechuan Dumplings is FANTASTIC. They should bottle this and have it available for purchase. We ordered some of the sauce to-go and used it in a stir fry. Can you say delicious?! Entrees: Crispy Duck & Chong Qing Spicy Chicken. Both great entrees. I do think the crispy duck was a little dry, but was delicious. Boyfriend loved the Chong Qing Spicy Chicken. There were a multitude of flavors and both dishes came with a side of white rice. The take-out experience since the most recent restaurant dine-in closure has been great. To start off the hostess was rude and reluctant to seat us. She would not look us in the eye and did not acknowledge us when we first came in. Then we were served RAW semi frozen siu mai. when we brought it up to the waiter and kitchen, they were very bothered by our complaint. They did not apologize nor did they take it off the receipt. Our server just took it back to the kitchen and we didn't get an update. We got the beef Szechuan noodle soup next and they were pretty bland. I would not recommend this restaurant. The prices are outrageous for the quality of food. We still ended up paying for the dumplings despite the raw pork and not finishing it. She was really nice, but we took her recommendation for a spicy Szechwan chicken dish and it was all fried breading and onions with a side of rice. Minneapolis has plenty of solid Szechuan restaurants and JUN, in the North Loop, is aiming to be the trendiest. Its food is fine, but expensive. I personally would go elsewhere (Tea House and Grand Szechuan come to mind) but JUN isn't bad by any means. We started with vegetable dumplings ($12 for six) which were good, but expensive. The spicy cucumbers ($10) were also tasty, but expensive. The spicy ma po tofu ($15), made vegan, was excellent---spicy, hearty and savory. It's one of the best in the Twin Cities. JUN makes its own rice noodles and we enjoyed the chow fun with vegetables ($16), but it's expensive for what it is. The snow pea tips ($16) tasted fine. It's hard to mess this dish up. Lastly, the sesame balls ($6) tasted okay, but carry hints of whatever meat was fried in the same fryer as these. The menu has a bunch of items that are vegan or can be made vegan, but a few you'd think could be made vegan (such as the dan dan noodles) didn't list that as an option online, anyway. I received an order of won ton soup. It was thirteen dollars for five wonton and maybe 16 ounces of mediocre broth with a couple of sprigs of cilantro. Thirteen dollars! I've been looking for a an authentic take out spot and think I've found it in JUN! We tried the Dan Dan noodles, papaya salad, and Szechuan dumplings. Even though it was take out, everything was still fresh when we dug in at home. Nothing was as spicy as we were expecting, but it was all still delicious! The papaya salad was a sleeper item I think is worth getting every time. 4 stars just because of the price - too expensive for go to take out but definitely worth splurging on every now and then. read more

I came on Christmas Day to visit my friend at the bar while he worked at the JUN Restaurant 730 Washington Avenue located in the north loop. When I arrived the restaurant was busy and seemed great until things turned worse there was a server named Norzing she was loud about who is taking the next table, saying "we are short staffed and that other co workers had called out.." She was very irritated /angry and made it seem like she wanted the guests to know as well, she yelled at the bar to another co worker Molly saying " if any other people come let them wait and then let's close the doors, Nothing she had red earrings that evening. She said let them wait said they're walk ins they don't matter." I witnessed so much my friend was assisting guests professionally while being harassed by a co worker made me very upset, as well a other guest at the bar and surrounding tables. Upon noticing everything that was happening at the said that Antonio doesn't care and she will have a long talk with "Jesse," when the night was over. I witnessed Norzing server at the bar emptying a tray of dirty glasses into the water with straws and fruit etc where to wash the glasses as well as grabbing four somewhat clean glasses after throwing garbage after she grabbed those glasses with hir dirty hands inside to serve her next guests. Decided to finally try this place. It was very tasty. I was expecting something like Chinese food but it was a little different. We ordered take out. It was ready very quickly and we got a good bit of food for about $65. We got the BBQ pork fried rice, farmers chicken, egg rolls, shizhito peppers, and hot and sour soup. All of it was delicious. If you're an egg roll person you will not be disappointed - probably the best I've had in Minneapolis so far. Hot and sour soup was amazing as well. Honestly the only reason I'm giving 4 stars in the BBQ pork fried rice was kind of bland. I think likely due to my expectations being different than what I actually got... lol. We wanted to have a progressive dinner for my birthday starting with dumplings and Dim Sum which brought us to JUN. Honestly we had heard bad review from some bar patrons at Freehouse but wanted an adventure and continued on with our plan. We started with Szechuan dumplings, pork buns and soup dumplings. They all had good flavor, some didn't seem as fresh as true Taiwanese or Chinese dumplings but we were pleased with the flavor. Our second course was moo shu pork, a spicy beef, beef noodles and shrimp dumplings. Each of our entrees were really tasty and delivered good flavor for family style small bites. They have a decent drink menu with some great tap beers and wine to pair with your food items. I wasn't blown away but enjoyed both the food and atmosphere and wondered how much our Freehouse critic had actually had to drink? My boyfriend and I enjoyed the food here. Prices were a bit high but not unexpected due to the location and ambiance. The portions were big so that made the prices more understandable as well. I got the shrimp chow fun (which was the same as the other proteins) and the noodles had a great texture and weren't overly saucy (which can be too much sometimes). The shrimp itself were tiny but flavor was there. Boyfriend got the crazy beef and he really liked it. It came in more liquid than expected but it wasn't a bad thing (we used it on over our rice and it was delicious). I definitely wanted to try those fish fillets (as seen on Yelp) but I guess they don't have them anymore....bring those back! I want to try them. We had a party of 8 people so we were all only able to get one spoonful from each dish. We each ordered a dish to share. The food overall was salty. Every dish was salty. Maybe it was an off night? Ambiance is nice but they have no restroom. You have to go out to the hallway to use the restroom. Dishes were on the pricey side as well. Overall, I probably won't be coming back. We liked the idea of ordering off the menu for dim sum because we tend to over eat and feel so rushed at the dim sum cart places. Plus those places can get so crowded. Shu mai (was ok), shrimp and chives (too doughy), shrimp and cilantro (good), curried baby octopus (ok), mango crepes (horrible), sesame balls (not good- bready not chewy). Crispy chicken sticky rice (delicious and so cute. Shaped like little birds). Items are between$6-8, so basically paying$2 for one dumpling. From menu, ordered Jun fried rice (delicious) and beef chow fun (beef was tender and tasty). Serving sizes are more single sided, not family style. Also ordered Chinese broccoli... Can't review that because it never came... Which leads me to service review. So we ordered from the dim sum menu and regular menu. Not exaggerating on the wait time because I texted a friend when our dim sum arrived and then looked at my phone before I complained to our server. Thirty minutes. By the time the fried rice and chow fun arrived, was 40 min. Chinese broccoli never came out too. Server blamed the chef but we seriously think he forgot to put in our order. Normally I would be more forgiving but he didn't take any ownership of the mistake. In summary my bad review is based on service and wait time, as well as price. 4 stars - will be back for the upscale ambiance and stand out drinks menu. Food same as any other sichuan place around. They have 3 distinct dining areas - one with tons of spot lightning and windows, bar and small bar side stools/mini tables, and a very dimly lit area. Since I'll be taking lots of photos I opted for more light. Here's what we ordered- Dan Dan noodles, Sliced Pork Belly, Pork Intestines, Cumin Lamb, Crispy Fish Filets. Drinks - Cranberry Fluff (cranberry, maple, lemon, eggwhite) Spring Crush (strawberry shrub, orange, lime, simple soda), Oolong Nog (oolong tea, pineapple juice, cream, nutmeg). This is a relatively new place that just open in early Feb 2017. They seem to be working out the kinks with their menu as some stuff are not available or special items have changed styles. Shouldn't be an issue overall but just fyi. Their drinks definitely stood out to me - it's in the fancy posh north loop neighborhood so their drinks menu does not disappoint. Great blend of Asian/Chinese ingredients in their cocktail menu. They do not offer sake here but instead the traditional and authentic bai jiu! Bai Jiu is a strong white distilled spirit - similar look and taste to vodka. Food wise - same as any other sichuan restaurant. You can always customize lower or higher spice levels. I would say it feels a bit tailor to the Western diner but with a higher end feel. They didn't seem to have an overwhelming numbing feel found at a traditional sichuan restaurant with the spice and peppercorns which I am glad it is toned down on the spice level! One other food distinction - they do not seem to have actual hot pot as apparent to traditional sichuan restaurants. Think bowling pot of hot soup at your table with a fire underneath. Their menu gets confusing at this point so you would need to clarify with your waiter. We asked several of their "hot pot" items and it was actually a stir fried.. confusing indeed. I rarely give 5 stars but I feel this place deserved it. First off I have been debating for a long time to come here to try their dim sum. One thing I heard is that they have dim sum daily and on the weekends there are some additional items you can get. I did read some reviews prior and some of them stood out, mostly because they are from people I know. There are several reviews saying the dim sum isn't that great and if you go you should just go for the soup dumplings. When we got there, it was quiet and not crazy busy like what you would see at Mandarin Kitchen. There wasn't any carts being pushed around and we were handed a menu with all of the items on it. Pretty fancy except one of the menus had some stains from food that had been spilled on it prior. Oh well... that takes a way from the fancy factor. We ordered the soup dumplings and a bunch of other things such as the curry octopus, lotus leaves rich, sticky rice dumplings, hargow and more. The waitress informed us that they have a new dim sum chef, I wonder if that's why this experience was so good. One of the first dishes we got was the Char Sui Bao, bbq pork buns. It was VERY yummy. The inside was moist and delicious while the breading on the outside was not dry but also moist and delicious. Perfect combo. We also go the curry octopus and I have never had any octopus that wasn't chewy and tough. This octopus melted in my mouth. It a pleasant surprise and I definitely enjoyed that. The little sticky rice dumplings came shaped as little birdies. Very cute. I enjoyed this dish as well. I can't express how happy I was with the meal. Even the bbq rice noodle dish was delicious. JUN has been on my radar for a few years since they opened, but I didn't have the chance to visit until today, when Ono Hawaiian Plates ended up not being a dinner option for various reasons. The restaurant has a fairly industrial/urban design to it that is definitely not typical for Chinese restaurants. Parking in the area sucks. You have been warned. Dishes ordered: xiao long bao, sichuan dumplings, san jiao lamb, sichuan green beans, old fashioned The old fashioned was a bit disappointing. Drink flavors were pretty muted and overall wasn't very satisfying. The san jiao lamb didn't have much of the more gamey taste that you'd expect from a lamb dish. The chilis was probably the best part of the dish with all of the in fused flavors in the oil and it added a mild kick to the dish and goes very well with rice. However, I was expecting the dish to be much spicier, which would have really made the dish that much better. The sichuan green beans met expectations in terms of flavor and bean crunchiness, however, as a note, the dish was a bit on the oily side. The sichuan dumplings was probably the best dish there, especially the chili oil that it was sitting in. These are indeed handmade. Though they are fairly small and there are only six dumplings, the pork filling packed a punch of flavor and the chili sauce paired very well with a good balance of salt, sweetness, vinegar, and chili oil. However, I was expecting the sauce to be much more spicy than it was, and I didn't notice much sichuan peppercorn or chili presence that would be expected with this dish, which would have done wonders. The xiao long bao was the most problematic dish. While it's nice there are six to a serving, the metal steamer that it came in was way overcrowded. This meant that the individual XLBs were either sticking to each other or the steamer sides. The skins ended up tearing and a lot of soup ended up getting lost as the result. Whatever intact XLB remained was good. There was some soup present and had a mild chicken flavor, but isn't as pronounced or robust as, say, XLB from Din Tai Fung (granted that would be more of pork soup dumpling, and it'd be kind of comparing apples to oranges). The dipping sauce didn't add much to the XLB, so the XLB is best eaten as is. All in all, the food is decent. However, in terms of flavors, I was expecting some of the dishes to be much more spicy with chili or sichuan peppercorns. The portions are also small, and the prices are quite high (likely due to the location of the restaurant). Also, there was a meager amount of rice to go with the dishes, and was nowhere near enough to soak up all of the sauces and oil flavors from the dishes. Additionally, there were some leaking pipes in the ceiling that were dripping on to the floor next to our table that we didn't notice until after we ordered food. I was surprised that we were not offered another table. Additionally, the staff just didn't look happy, though there was some big Asian mom presence in the kitchen. I really wanted to like JUN. I have nothing but well wishes for the restaurant to do well and I hope things get better for them, since there are very few Asian-run restaurants in the downtown/North Loop/NE area, and I hope they survive the COVID downturn. But overall, the restaurant is mostly geared towards the North Loop and Caucasian crowd, especially with a lot of the offerings being Chinese-American and a lot of the spiciness being toned down for Western palates. I was the only Asian among the customers for most of the meal, which is a bit of a red flag. Additionally, for $80 ($60 without the old fashioned) with the 5% COVID-19 surcharge (wtf?), I can't justify coming back, especially since there is much better Sichuan food (and Chinese food in general) to be had in the Twin Cities. 3-3.25 stars. read more

The parking available there is street parking on some paid parking spaces which are right across the street. We had a group of 6 adults and 1 infant. The receptionist got us seated quickly and greeted very well. We ordered some cocktails to begin with, which were just alright, none of them stood out. We had some appetizers which were the dumplings, chilies and wings. Wings were decent, Chilies were excellent and dumplings were tasty as well. We ordered 4 entrees to go with for the table. This is not a good authentic Szechuan restaurant and should stop acting like it is one. Ordered: 1. Beef Dry Pot (ma la xiang guo) 2. BBQ Pork BELLY Rice Received: 1. Some form of beef stir-fry with probably a single mushroom's worth of mushroom in the entire dish, small portion size. Didn't taste fresh at all and was bitter. 2. Literal regular takeout pork fried rice (the meat was actually char siu shoulder pieces, NOT pork belly as advertised and there was but a sprinkle of them regardless). Not even sure how this is legal advertising the wrong form of meat. These TWO items cost me $50 for a meal that is quite literally worth $15 at any cheap takeout place, and is far from authentic as can be. Not sure how they are able to advertise dishes with these kind of names and get away with it. Imagine going to a French restaurant advertising foie gras and ordering it only to receive mock duck and some beef liver. That's honestly what this feels like, and it's really not OK. If you're a fan of authentic chinese food, steer clear. If you're a fan of American fusion Chinese food, find any place about 2.5x cheaper for the same quality. read more

Jun is rapidly becoming one of our go-to spots when we are looking for a good bite to eat on a weeknight and are craving dim sum. I KNEW there had to be a place in town that served dim sum seven days a week. I mean, basically every major metro area has one, so there had to be one somewhere, right? Glad we finally found this. So Jun is on Washington, down the street from some of our other favorite hot spots like Smack Shack and Bar La Grassa. But I do think it holds its own on this foodie of foodiest streets. Basically the menu is wide-ranging. There are some traditional Chinese dishes, so if you want a plate of lo mein or sesame chicken, Jun can do that. But to me, the real highlight are the dim sum dishes, which are offered a la carte and made to order any time you wish. Yum. We've now sampled a pretty wide array of items. By far, the hands-down winner is the shrimp-stuffed eggplant. I have had this dish at a lot of dim sum restaurants, but this is the best version of it I have ever had. It is lightly crispy, deep fried and tasty, served in a delicious Chinese brown sauce. SO good. To the point where now I get my own order of eggplant because, OMG, yummy. Other highlights so far that we've discovered were the pan fried fried pork and chive dumplings and the turnip cakes. A lot of other items are good - sticky rice, barbecue pork buns, szechuan dumplings and fried shrimp balls. The fried are a bit on the greasy side (but really delicious). I also like that they bring you a little pitcher of hot chili oil for your meal. Since it's all made to order, it's all piping hot when it comes to your table. On the less-positive side, it does seem like they really want you to order alcohol. When you don't, they seem disappointed. There's no cart service (maybe on the weekends, haven't been on the weekend). And it's a bit pricey. I would say that most dishes are $5, but there are some that are kind of abnormally expensive, including the bok choy with mushrooms, the snow pea tips (which are NEVER available but also cost $17) and the soup dumplings (which were good but not amazing). But absolutely if you are seeking good Chinese food and specifically dim sum, Jun will absolutely satisfy your cravings. The space is very nice and relaxed, and at least so far, it's never been super busy, so we can always get seated easily. We really enjoy eating here and surely will be back. read more

When we arrived, they said they were full with reservations (the place never got more than 25% filled the entire time we were there). However, we asked about getting seated at the bar. This worked out because they serve the entire menu here. There were so many delicious looking items on the menu. We originally came here for dim sum, but that all changed when we were told they were out of a few things. As vegetarians, we were disappointed to learn they were out of tofu. We arrived here at 11am on a Sunday, so they must not have ordered appropriately for the week?! This changed everything for us. Jun Fried rice was amazing. Also got shrimp lo mein and it was a bit salty. My friend got the general tao's chicken and it just had this awful chicken taste but the waitress was extremely nice and was able to switch it out for us. Amazing service and the restaurant is super cute. read more

Very solid place in the loop. Everything was tasty and the Spicy Szechuan Beef Noodle Soup stood out. My wife said they were maybe the best noodles she's had in town so far. Might have just gotten lucky, but they were cooked perfectly, the broth was delicious and the beef was cooked to perfection. The crispy duck is a great value and also tasty, but was a bit over cooked. Hard to get it crispy and juicy, but alas, that's the name of the game. The green beans and Szechuan dumps were pretty good but could have been stepped up in flavor. Maybe they are going for more of a general crowd pleaser approach, but they should amp up the peppers on everything. Classic problem at Szechuan places. 50% more Szechuan and this place would be pushing 5 stars. Maybe I will ask for spicy next time? All in all, I think this place was a good value in a trendy hood and that soup really stood out. Will 100% go back for the soup during the winter. read more

Great atmosphere and excellent service. We had the shishito peppers and spicy cucumber appetizer...excellent. King Pao and a San Jiao beedish were very tasty! We would come back! We are back! And super happy with our experience again!! Happy to see this place is still open with Covid and they have adapted to patio seating very nicely. This place is a must try!!! read more
