I wanted to get a few pieces of jewelry (handed down to me from various grandmothers, aunts, etc.) looked at, to determine how much they might be worth, and to see whether it would make financial sense to get a formal, documented appraisal for insurance purposes. David and Lynn were both wonderful. Great communication in setting up the appointment, and then once I was there, David was very dedicated, even taking the time to explain to me what a gemologist is typically looking at and for, when appraising jewelry. He pointed out to me the particular clasps used on the pearl necklaces I'd brought in, and then pointed out to me the various tonalities in the individual pearls, what makes some pearls more valuable than others etc. He was very patient and straightforward. I felt like I was in very good hands with David, and that I'd not get 'scammed' or told anything simply because I might want to hear it. He did insurance appraisals on two vintage timepieces for me and provided a thorough, authoritative report, well-sourced with citations to governing professional sources. I used Just Appraisers to get an appraisal of a vintage/antique engagement ring for insurance purposes. I had an excellent experience - David was very thorough with his cleaning and examination, and answered all my questions as he worked. At the end of the appointment we were looking online to try to find pricing of comparable rings, and it took a looong time (drawback of having an old ring - not many comps online!). But David very kindly only charged me for the main portion of the appraisal, and didn't bill for the searching time online - a thoughtful and generous gesture that I and my wallet both really appreciated. He also pointed me to a jeweler in the building to re-set the old diamond, and offered to walk me down and make the introduction (which I plan on doing in the coming weeks). All in all, a very detailed, informative, ethical, and friendly experience. The online portal they have set up for receiving the appraisal PDF is well organized and easy to access, and Mike quickly sent me another version of my appraisal when I realized I'd initially given them my nickname, not legal name. The one thing I wasn't crazy about is that I waited for about 20 minutes after my appointment time before I got in there. I think they had a really vocal/chatty customer in there before me (I had to knock to interrupt twice before I was seen). I certainly didn't envy them trying to get this guy to wind down and get out the door! Not worth taking a star off because it was a small hiccup in an otherwise excellent experience. Buying an engagement ring is fraught with pitfalls and rip offs. Before I made this purchase...my jewelry buying experience was the purchase of my highschool class ring. Of course I had to make it more difficult on myself... First, I bought the stone from one of those guys on 47th Street. Luckily, he sold me quality merchandise. How do I know? David did an extensive diamond appraisal. He reviewed the cut, color, clarify, and inclusions. The whole nine yards... Next I got the stone set downtown at Little King. It turns out Little King (and the people who cast their rings) had some issues casting this ring. How do I know? David made close inspection of every nook and cranny. Little King took care of all the issues. How do I know? David certified that the ring is rock solid. The report you get out of David is legit. He's got some very cool high-tech gear that lets him scan the stone and take pictures of the ring. The images came in handy; the wife-to-be sent pictures to her out-of-town parents. I went to Just Appraisers yesterday, wanting to get a pair of diamond earrings appraised. No one was in the front so I rang the bell. A lady came out and I explained to her that I want to get an appraiser for the diamond earrings. She quoted me $200 for an verbal appraisal (no certificate) and didn't even bother to look at the diamonds. I don't know how much it usually costs at this place but $200 sounds way too expensive. I ended getting my diamonds appraised at a place down the block and paid 1/3 of their quoted price. read more

The appraisal itself was great, but the price was out of this world. I was charged $375 for a job that I had previously paid only $80. Maybe that's normal for NYC, but a little searching on the internet suggests that I paid too much and I wish I had done more research before heading down there. Having said that, the appraisal was fantastic: they do everything in sight and walk you through the process. The report is very detailed compared to many appraisals we've had and the staff are pleasant. They also don't inflate the value of your piece, which I like, but I don't know if that's true for everyone. read more

I went to David's office near Rockafeller Center and rung the bell. David is very nice and personable. His wife, Lynn, helps him in the office. He charges a flat hourly rate and our four rings took about 1.5 hours. It's a family business and I feel like they put the customer first. I overheard Lyn and David talking to other customers on the phone and they seemed very helpful and took the time to explain to people how appraisals generally work. So, this would also be a good option if you are new to the world of jewelry or just got some jewelry and are not sure what to expect. Luckily I called my jeweler who told me that most places will do it for 50-80 dollars- yes, this includes a report for getting it insured.
