When I called the business office to ask if I could put my membership on hold for a few months, the lady who answered the phone was rather rude. I asked about pausing my membership and she said in a harsh rather scolding tone that I couldn't cancel a membership over the phone but would have to go in. I told her I didn't ask about cancelling but pausing. She said there's no pausing, again in a harsh tone. I might join again when I have more time. I had been told a couple of years ago that I could pause for a couple of months. I guess they changed that policy.

Plenty of squat racks and free weights. Friendly staff. And being a former competitive power lifter, I really appreciated the powerlifting room that was full of quality equipment from Texas Strength Systems and Rogue Fitness. Not to mention the three full sets of kilo plates which is something I haven't seen at many gyms. I think it's great there is a general fitness area that still has deadlift platforms and squat racks and a dedicated powerlifting room. They also just recently added a cardio balcony that I forgot to take a picture of but it's a nice view while doing cardio to overlook the gym. Overall, this is a great gym that I would recommend to anyone from a beginner to a serious competitive lifter like myself. Great gym!

Since their facilities are physically connected to the school, they have more security measures than in other Y locations. The doors are usually locked but someone is at the front desk all the time during opening hours. Members use a key fob to enter. The staff is super nice and they genuinely interact with people in a friendly manner. Student athletes use the facilities regularly, so there's a schedule on the wall outside the basketball court and the weight room indicating when the students are scheduled to be there. The rest of the students get a discounted membership ($19 a month) and no joining fee. They offer small group training classes as well as cycle classes. They have cardio equipment and weight machines as well as their Myzone monitoring. There's also a lap track on the second floor that loops around the basketball court. They have community health workshops and other programming available for parents, senior citizens and students. I'm so glad this is available for our community!

The cleanliness of the facility is generally good, though temperature and lighting could be improved as it is very bright and very hot in there. My primary concerns are the use of tripods and video recording, which seems unrestricted, and the differing expectations for male and female attire, as the males are asked to keep their shirts on, while the females walk around in nothing more than a bra and panties. Implementing a universal dress code requiring shirts would promote a more inclusive environment. Moreover, moderating the music volume and diversifying the playlist would cater to a broader range of preferences as I'm sure most people would agree we do not want to listen to songs by Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys from their very first albums. Pool closed 4 days in a row. Button for steam room broken. Sauna was out for a month. Weight machines stay broken. Free weight section only has a few of the lower weight dumbells which everyone uses yet an excess of the larger weights. No water fountain by pool, sauna and hot tub - Have to walk into main gym and track water. Dangerous. Large staff turnover, and have heard from 3 former employees this is a terrible place to work and they don't care about their members, clients or employees.

It was clean, it smelled good, not like when you walk into an old gym and everything smells of sweat and who knows what. The machines were well maintained and the art work was awesome. It was 10AM on a Saturday and no one was there. There is access to the gym 24/7 with a membership ($30 or $35 a month). They have cardio machines and a lot of weight equipment. I was nervous but ready to go! I met with a personal trainer since I am no where near my goal. His name was Judge. HOLY, there was no messing around. We got to work and worked the entire 45 minutes! There was little rest and he kept my muscles and me focused on the task at hand. Super kind and very motivating. By the time I left I couldn't wait for the next session. No nerves, no intimidation just motivation! I noticed the gym didn't have a Yelp review, but I am telling you if you are looking for a low key gym, who surrounds you with good people and good equipment or if you need a trainer ($35/session for 1 (group rates too)) OR you are into competing, want to reach a goal, etc.... this is the place to come. I've been weight training with Ashley Day out of Styrka Gym for a few weeks now. I will keep you…read moreupdated as I go, but so far, it has been a very fun, authentic and surprisingly empowering experience. - The gym itself has never been overcrowded. There is plenty of space and equipment to accommodate everyone comfortably. - I love that parking is quick and easy. (I was a tad worried about the 71st street traffic when I initially saw the address... but it's actually a bit removed from mall traffic... so the traffic had never been an issue for me.) - I love the 24/7 access pass. As a female, I feel very safe... even later in the evening if I'm the only one there. It's very secure. - Everyone's been very friendly, considerate... and everyone is REAL... I workout with REAL people (they don't look "plastic" or "photoshopped")... they are real people who take their goals seriously. Everyone you meet at Styrka is there to better themselves... and it's totally fine wherever YOU may be in that self improvement process. Even if you're just starting out, or it's been a while... and you're trying to get back into the swing of things... you WILL feel welcomed and supported... no matter your skill level. - It's very clean and tidy. The bathrooms are always clean and people are really good about tidying up after themselves. Love that! - Another cool thing about this place, if you have a question... people around are happy to help. (That might be the best part... that Styrka is a community...) It's not impersonal... you don't get lost in the crowd... And you actually get to put names with smiling faces. One final tip: If you are newer to the gym or if the correct form has always been a bit of a mystery to you... it's worth investing in some sessions with one of the trainers that work out of Styrka.
