I've been to the frilly, frou-frou spa places, and yeah, the experiences are amazing... but the drinks, plush robes, and zen water fountains are all un-necessary in getting the knots out of my shoulders. I was immediately greeted by Jan and she automatically made me feel like we were old friends catching up. She made it a priority to know where I was hurting and of any medical conditions I had. She made sure to get out all the little knots in my neck and shoulders and also did a little face/jaw massage which made my TMJ/jaw feel like I had a 1 hour laser therapy session. I felt like a million bucks. One thing that I am grateful for is educating me. Of all the massages I've received, no one has ever told me to hydrate well so I can pee out the toxins. Same experience as Malia S. Went today and therapist didn't greet me, introduce self or gave a worthy massage. He didn't ask about previous injuries or medical history. Therapist had sweaty hands with not not enough massage oil which equals to stinky hands rubbing your skin. Heavy breathing and yawning entire time was not just rude but kind of creepy. He had no technique to his massage and what was suppose to be 60 minute massage ended in 45 minutes. Needless to say, won't be visiting this place again. Update - 2 hours after the "massage" my right ear, head and neck began to hurt. Felt like an ear infection so I gently massaged around the areas and took aleve. I've had massages everywhere, at random fancy spas, paying upwards of $120/hr. I have always left feeling disappointed, and unsatisfied. A huge deal for me is, why ask where my problem spots are, if you're not going to focus on it anyway? So I came here, with great expectations based on other yelp reviews. I wasn't disappointed! I had Jan, and she was very friendly, and talked up until she started the massage. BIG PLUS, I do not like to be talked to during a massage. So throughout the next 90 minutes, I had one of the best massages I've ever had. She's strong, but not to the point where it isn't enjoyable. She concentrated heavily on my feet, which is exactly what I requested! Never in my life has anyone actually listened to what was hurting me and made an effort to fix it. Usually they do their normal massage routine and that's it. She also did a facial massage, which was something I've never had before. The scalp massage was a bit too much pressure, but overall the entire massage was satisfying. This place is not a spa, it's just a simple space with 2 massage rooms. I don't need the frilly surroundings of a spa, it's not like I keep my eyes open during a massage anyway! Although, I felt like the music should have been a bit quieter, and the lights turned off since there was a bit of sunlight coming in from the windows anyway. These things would've made it a 5 star experience for me. I paid $65 for an hour and a half, that's unheard of, so I'm very satisfied and will definitely be returning! My body felt like jelly for the rest of the day, extremely relaxed! My bf on the other hand, left in pain! And he said it was way too sore, and is still hurting now. Since I can remember as an adult, I have battled a massive knot in my right shoulder that, at it's peak, can make my arm a bit numb and ruin my day. This happened to me two days ago, and right in the middle of my visit home! Talk about making my time with family miserable! My first intention was to just find some quick kiosk massage place at the mall where you sit in their chair and they massage you for 15 minutes, so I hopped online and stumbled upon Ka Hale Ola. Most of the reviews were positive, and the citations were consistent: Amazing price; even more amazing massage. This was it! I fired off a quick e-mail request and went to sleep. I got up, checked my e-mail and was impressed that Aran had e-mailed me back overnight! Due to a schedule conflict, I wasn't able to get in until today, but talk about great communication! As other reviewers have noted, Ka Hale Ola is not a spa-massage venue. It is a straight forward, simple and very clean massage clinic where quality massage at an affordable price is the attraction. I met Aran and much to everyone's opinion that he's not friendly, I beg to differ. He was personable, funny, and lightened the mood. More importantly, Aran did a quick assessment with me before he started to find the problem spots. And man, he found them! I got the hour massage and lost track of time once Aran started. From the get go, he identified and targeted my critical stress areas. Muscles and spots I didn't know were problem areas were quickly and effeciently dispatched. It's like Aran knew exactly where to go and he did so with the right amount of pressure. He's strong; make no doubt about it, but he uses the right amount of pressure to effect the maximum result. When we were done, that spot which had plagued me for years felt like it was reduced to a level I've not felt before. I was relaxed, and had some sensory overload as everything was feeling better and the world seemed brighter. Aran took the time to let me know what to do for follow up when I flew home to Seattle, and gave me a quick lesson in what to look for when selecting a massage therapist. His prices are more than fair, his office is clean and well appointed without being gaudy, but most of all he is amazingly knowledgeable and knows how to massage. I'd pay double next time; it was that good! This was my first massage and I hope it's not my last. Somehow I think Aran spoiled me for my first massage because he is going to be the gold standard by which all other massages will be measured! I had a massage from Aran nearly a decade ago when I used to live on the island and it was such a good one that I've since compared all my massages to Aran's. I recently ended up back on Oahu for a short time drove past like 30 massage places to get one at Ka Hale Ola, it was that memorable. His massage is both technically good and he is very intuitive. He finds problem areas and works them out with just the right amount of pressure. I've been in a great mood ever since the massage and feel super loose and relaxed. SHOULDN'T I AT LEAST KNOW YOUR NAME BEFORE THE HEAVY BREATHING BEGINS? Walking through the door, I wasn't greeted, only to verify my name and told me to fill out a form. He didn't introduce himself, so I wasn't sure if he was just the receptionist and we were waiting for the therapist, but then he stood up and pointed to the room I would be in. The room was not dark nor comfortable. It was full of sarongs which were used to cover the windows (not very good at blocking out the light) and to line the massage table and another small one to cover you. No fresh white sheets and towels. The sarong was barely big enough to crawl under to cover my body. He came in the room, and the heavy breathing began- it was heavy and loud, almost as he was winded after a workout. Although his massage technique was solid- strong deep tissue - I found it extremely hard to relax because all I could hear was his breathing. I tried my best to focus on Kealii Reichel's voice in the background music, but it was useless. Although I told him where my pain was on my lower back, he spent a large portion of the time on my shoulders and neck, hence the breathing was even louder as he was by my ears. Then he did some weird stretching with my arms and my legs which made me very uncomfortable as I could feel the small sarong that was covering me fall off, exposing me. I really just wanted it to be over. When it was done, I got dressed and went outside. I had money in my hand to tip him (to be nice) but he didn't even look up from behind the desk. I said "thank you" and still, no eye contact. So I put my money back in my pocket. I still have no idea what his name was. read more

I finished my massage with Aran and feel so much better. He got out all of my knots and relaxed my back muscles. I got hurt when I was campaigning several years ago at Times Liliha. Once in awhile my back acts up tremendously, causing me to have severe pain in my sciatica and upper/lower back. Aran knew where the kinks were and gently massaged them out. I feel like new. Ka Hale Ola is a great place to get a massage. I probably shouldn't be reviewing this establishment since I'm sure more people will find out my secret and it'll get harder to get an appointment! Actually, I've never had trouble booking an appointment - and have been quite lucky to get appointments booked with little advance notice. Perfect if you wake up with a creaky neck and sore muscles and need some relief that day! The place is clean and tastefully decorated, music plays softly, and it is very comfortable so you are able to relax and thoroughly enjoy your massage. Aaran gives a good, deep, strong massage that works out sore muscles and relieves pain. In fact, I just went this past Friday because i had a sore neck and the massage made me feel so much better. All of my tension was massaged away. *Whew* I love the fact that you can park right downstairs and even though the parking lot is small I've never had trouble getting a parking space. You can also buy massage packages which make the massage sessions much more affordable. I just wish I could get a massage once a week - Then I would be in heaven! read more

Mixed bag... 4 stars for Aran: My husband had Aran who was awesome. Trained in medical massages and physical therapy work, Aran knew how to work on an old injury and work out some major knots. Husband came out feeling sore, but refreshed. ASK FOR ARAN if you go to Ka Hale Ola Massage, you won't be disappointed!!! 1 star for Jan: I usually look for the good in experiences, but after being through many different types of massages, this had to be the least favorite massage experience I have ever had. First off, Jan did not listen to what target areas I needed work on (despite filling out the work-up form and conveying to her several times). It was as if she was afraid to work on what I really needed done and instead focused on my back for about 90% of the time. Most of the time she was rubbing my skin, not deep tissue type massage (as I had asked for). Another drawback was that she TALKED the entire time about her life history now. A little less than an hour (she must have counted the time for me to undress/dress), my massage was pau. I am really happy that Aran continued to massage my husband for another 10-15 minutes. This massage gift was for my husband. :) THANKFULLY, this was a crowdsavings deal, so my loss wasn't too great, while my husband had an awesome deal! Every experience may be different and possibly Jan just had an off day.Another reviewer said Jan did target their problem areas, so it may just be hit or miss. If you are paying money though, a hit is always expected in business (whether you have a deal or not). Ok, so I know it seems odd that I'm writing an update to my review which was just posted a day ago, but there has been a turn of events, progress if you will. After posting my review on Yelp, I actually received contact from the business and they informed me that they had seen my review on Yelp and apologized that I had not been contacted. They had assumed that because I was requesting a same day appointment and they were unable to accommodate me that day, that I wouldn't be interested in scheduling a future appointment. This is logical to me and I understand their point of view. Though I still would have appreciated being contacted and informed of such info, but I greatly appreciate the fact that I have been contacted, to me, it reflect a sense of professionalism. So with that being said, I've increased my rating to 3 stars, simply for the fact that they read my review and actually made contact with me to explain the situation. I got a massage by Aran, who was really good! The only gripe I had was that he was really chatty kept talking, talking, and talking.. it was just a little hard to relax cuz he was talking to me so much.. even when I stopped talking back, he'd still keep talking! I never had a therapist who talked so much, but I didn't want to be rude, so i didn't say anything. But it definitely won't keep me from going back.. you can beat their prices! I love Ka Hale Ola. I go there for a 90 minute prenatal massage about once a month. I've read some of the other reviews and am very shocked. Especially Maryam, I don't think you should be writing a review until you've actually been to the place. I'm also not sure where on the mainland you are from but standard in California for a massage is $60 an hour, + 20% gratuity. My 90 minute prenatal massage costs $70. They don't take credit, but they do take checks, and all this information is posted on their website. My husband as a bad back and goes semi-regularly too. Ka Hale Ola is not a spa, and is compariable to Massage Envy, a chain on the mainland. As people who live on the island and dealing with going into town or to a resort for a Spa Massage is just dumb. I went to the office twice to be served by a man who made me feel like I was a nuisance to bother him while he played on his phone. Second time I expected it to be different. But no luck. My husband and I had a groupon thing for $25 for an hour massage. This place is definitely not a spa; which I expected after seeing their website. My massage therapist, I'm guessing was Jan, was great. Did an overall good massage and was very friendly. I just wish the lighting in there was darker or more dim. The music (Norah jones) was a little too loud so it was very difficult to fully relax. My husband on the other hand had Aaron...his nails were too long and scratched him during the massage and he was constantly coughing loudly. Also, it wasn't a full 60 min massage. It was more like 50 min. I guess they didn't really care since we used the groupon special. As we left and tipped them very generously considering our experience, we barely got a "thank you and good bye.". Thanks to my job, I've been building up all kinds of kinks and knots. After trying to ignore them for a year, I hit my max point when I hurt my neck and finally began the search for some help. My friends recommended I get a massage to work out the collection of ouchies I'd been housing in my little body. Yelp led me to Ka Hale Ola for its location (so convenient and close to home!) and price. Made my appointment by way of voicemail and text message (I'm a texting fiend, so this works for me). Showed up for my appointment and saw Aran, who was seated at the front desk, looking disgruntled. I have to admit, it was off-putting, and I wasn't too stoked... but once we started talking, he opened up and was one funny and talkative guy. Being that this was my first massage, I was feeling awkward and a little unsure, but once Aran started his work, I was sold. One hour flew by, with Aran's strong hands doing absolute magic on my poor aching back and shoulders. As time went on, we talked story more and I was able to relax and enjoy, and we even had a bunch of laughs (big plus for me!). I was so apprehensive about going for massages, but this experience has changed it all for me. I'm feeling SO MUCH better, that horrible kink in my neck and shoulder has dissipated, and I'm excited! Great massage. Aran is a really cool dude and knows how to loosen you up. He has ridiculously strong hands but in the end, I never felt looser. Came here from a car accident and he certainly handled all the problem areas that I was having. If you're looking for someone with strong hands who knows what he's doing, this is the place to go. No technique, weird pinching, etc. I didn't feel relaxed or anything at all when he was done. I would've asked for a different therapist. I had a ton of pain in my back and neck and wanted a place that would actually work on the knots and tense muscle. yup! the treatment i got was exactly what i wanted. the therapist really targeted the bad spots in my body and made the massage very individualized. not generic like when you go to an expensive spa or something. plus, he was super strong and firm so it was totally worth the price. basically what a massage should feel like. i will definitely go back and recommend my friends. read more

Went in for my first time and used an Amazon Voucher for $25. Walked through the door and was greeted with "Fill out the form" and nothing more... I had to ask if the person addressing me behind the counter flippantly was Aran. Yes it was! Without any customary greetings or pleasantries I felt that maybe this person really didn't want to be there that morning. Maybe I was inconveniencing him. Fine, maybe I caught him on an off day, you know everyone has them. But that incident caught me completely off guard and all of a sudden spun me into a dark mood. When I go into a "Customer Service" oriented business, I'd expect to feel welcomed or at the very least have a cordial exchange of names. Needless to say few words were spoken afterwards, which was fine. It was a massage I came in for after all and not to make a friend. As far as the actual massage went, I must say that I was pretty pleased with the results. Except for just a few minor concerns. Like using oil sparingly, the fact that his right thumb nail wasn't trimmed completely and he coughed intermittently. I'd have to say though that his deep tissue massage technique was to my liking. He used good hard pressure and really got deep into the muscle. Which made me feel that the time spent there was well worth the value of the voucher and more. So I tipped him an additional $10. After settling the bill with the tip no customary farewell instructions were given, such as keeping hydrated or resting or whatever. Just a "If you want to make an appointment call or text"... A friend and I found this place on yelp and seen all the wonderful reviews and thought we'd give it a try. we made an appointment for Saturday afternoon. We arrived about 10 minutes prior to our appointment however after numerous attempts to contact the office to buzz us into the building and calling the office we got no response. Our appointment time had come and gone. While they did call us 11 minutes after our appointment time we have already decided to leave. It would have been a lot better if they had someone in the office that could receive calls and buzz people into the building.... Especially if that is the only way in. To Therapist Aran: You were not personable, and your massage did not make up for that lack. I actually think I left feeling worse than when I went in-at least I didn't feel my sore muscles before you worked on me. I didn't read reviews before I went in with the KITV Deal Center voucher since I wanted to form my own opinions. The $25 I paid for the voucher was definitely an overpayment for the services I received. I don't expect therapists to always be bubbly and bright, but your attitude was off-putting. You were either in a bad mood, having a bad day, didn't want to be there, disliked me, or all of the above. If none of these were true, Aran, then that is certainly the attitude you projected and the reason why I asked if everything was ok at the end of the session. Your negative vibes and poor massage kept me from relaxing. I would've just left the session if I didn't have to wait for my ride. Also, I was morbidly curious as to how it would all pan out. Here's all the things I found objectionable about today's session (and I am being overly picky because if I had received a good/excellent massage, I wouldn't usually think twice about some of these points): 1. Sweaty hands: clammy and cringe-worthy. 2. Lack of lotion: as I understand it, Swedish massage is about gliding motions with lotion. After 2 lotion applications on my back, the rest of the massage was dry with pinching motions. Again, with a good massage, I wouldn't even notice/care. 3. Lack of work on problem areas: you worked a long time on my shoulder/back area, but hardly at all on my arms, hands, and ankle-the other problem areas I told you about. 4. Circles on the butt area didn't hit any pressure points or benefit me-all that happened was that you moved flesh. 5. Heavy breathing: distracting and a little gross. Therapists usually turn their heads to avoid breathing on people. While I was face up, I synchronized my breathing to inhale when you inhaled. 6. No helping hand: when my feet got cold, you sat there and waited for me to finish struggling upside-down to readjust the pareo. 7. No helping hand when placing/removing bolsters. Other therapists lift my legs to place/remove bolsters; they don't expect me to lift my legs or pull bolsters out from under me and let my legs fall to the bed. I'm supposed to be relaxed and loose, not flexing my muscles. This is a small thing but I found it rude. 8. What were you washing your hands with? Because when I went to wash my hands and pumped the soap dispenser, not a single residual drop came out. 9. Not a full hour: I arrived at 3:37 and you finished at 4:37. This time includes filling out paperwork and undressing. 10. At the end, when you asked if everything was ok (with the massage) your tone said that you didn't care. 11. BTW there are 17 ceiling tiles, including the light fixture. Yes, I was that bored. I did like your neck massage, minus the pinching thing in the front. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10 stars. You did sound friendlier as you said "good-bye" and "see you later" as I was leaving, after I had asked you if everything was ok. I was too disgusted to say anything at the time so here it all is. I'm not trying to be mean. Today's session was just that rotten-rotten enough for me to take the time to write this review, which I've only done one other time. ok, so my mom is pretty cheap and i just got laid off, but i went home and we decided to "splurge" on a massage. the other "spa" places were offering their massages for $70 and up, so we passed on all that noise. luckily, i'm internet capable and went on a hunt for an affordable massage and found ka hale ola - win win! unfortunately we were on a short time frame, but aran was able to accommodate a next day appointment on short notice (they seemed to be booked that day and the next.) we weren't able to get our 90 min massages because of the timing (i was leaving really soon) but our 60 min massages sure did feel like a whole 90 mins! my mom walked out happy, and this was probably her second massage ever, which is also amazing because she is so temperamental about pressure, but she was relaxed and her shoulder was feeling much better. i know my mom will surely go back because of the price (we got a deal for our first time) and i was greatly educated about the local clubs and hot spots from my masseuse as well as a great massage, so i was freaking excited. super nice guys there, comfortable and clean, it is a little small, but if your looking for frills, go pay heaven on earth $90 for the same shit. note: bring cash or check and try to get there a little early to park at pearlridge and walk over. read more

Love this place! Aran, one of the massage therapists/co-owners is f-ing awesome. I'd never had a male massage therapist before and he didn't make me feel weird or creeped out at all. I've been back several times and I intend on continuing to go a couple times a month. He consistently does a wonderful job and his schedule seems pretty flexible. I can call and get an appointment in the next day or two. This is definitely a no-frills kind of place -- it's not a spa -- which is reflected in the prices. Agree with Jennie and Anela. I did not get greeted just "fill out the board" No intro, only guy there so that was my MT I figured that out myself. Yes same thing heavy breathing from start to end with coughing so I guess he had an ailment, very painful, weird positions so I was more sore walking out and needed a massage after that. This was not the experience I was looking for. I arrived 15 min early to my appointment with the therapist stating, "you must be the twelve o'clock, fill out the paperwork." No smile, no eye contact. I filled out the paperwork brought it back up where it was taken from me without a word. I then went to the bathroom, came back and was told, "In there." with the point of a finger. I changed and the massage therapist (male and a bit overweight) came in asked where it hurt and began to massage my back with hardly any lotion (talk about rug burn). I then am in pain because he's using too much pressure. I told him that it hurt and to lighten up on the pressure but he didn't. I painfully went through the massage with heavy breathing (bad breath) and me yelping from the sore spots. He continued to massage without lotion on the limbs and neck.
