Kare-kare, pancit with pork, steamed white rice, and sabaw sinigang; Thanks Kabayan!

I came here as a first timer and to my surprise, the food was served like I usually do at home and it was amazingly tasty. I ordered Kare-kare, pancit with pork, steamed white rice and sabaw sinigang. Yummy! I'll come back for sure to try the bulalo, lumpia and more. Thanks Kabayan!

Great comfort food. Friendly staff. Always hits the spot when I come dine here. Also if you need something for the kitchen, just walk over to the cute mini grocery store a few steps away. My experience has always been yummy and order my regular slurps, Dinuguan, Pancit Canton, Jeprox, Pompano Sinigang, Pork BBQ, Lumpia, and for the final Burp Halo Halo

A Filipino friend of mine, who is a first rate sushi chef at a local Japanese restaurant, had recommended for me a Filipino market and restaurant called Kabayan Oriental Mart and Restaurant. Being that Filipino restaurants are a rarity in my part of South Florida, I was eager to try it. So, I went there last week for the first time. The restaurant was located in a small, unnoticeable shopping plaza. On the walls were displayed some Filipino bas-relief carvings. The market part of the restaurant contained several shelves full of delicacies imported from the Philippines. There was a variety of snacks and cookies as well as freshly prepared food items. They had home-made desserts such as Filipino flan, or Puto, a flavored steamed rice cake. Once I sat down at my table, I checked out the menu. Unlike some Asian fusion restaurants that carry a smattering of Filipino dishes, this place specialized only in Filipino cuisine. My Filipina food server was very helpful in explaining the menu offerings to me. I started with a Philippine style empanada. Although the crust was okay, the filling was a tasty blend of ground pork, raisins and other flavorings. I also had the Lumpia pork egg rolls. These came out nice and crispy and hot. I then ordered the sizzling Sisig, a dish comprising of pigs ears, pork belly and topped with a raw egg. Once mixed with the hot pork mixture, the egg is cooked. This dish was so delicious, and came with a side of flavorful garlic rice. For dessert, I had the Halo-Halo, a dessert made of purple yam ice cream, shaved ice, condensed milk, candied fruits, diced mango and a few other items. It was delicious and decadent and, from what I know of Filipino cuisine, very authentic. My final dessert was a just-made Turon- a crispy, flaky Lumpia filled with whole sweet plantains. This dessert was fresh and hot and addicting. But their stand-out dessert, which I tried once I got home, was their Sapin-Sapin, a wonderfully tempting happy ending made up of flavored sticky rice, with a layer of purple yam, a layer of yellow jack fruit and a layer of white custard. This attractive dessert was then topped with toasted coconut. Considering that I had never been here before, I was so fascinated by the menu that I plan on returning, despite its distance from my house. There are so many delicious sounding items on the menu that I wish to explore in future visits. As I said, it was not a fancy place, but if you're looking for authentic Filipino cuisine, this is the place to go.

It felt authentic, lively, and fun. I recently came back with my husband because I wanted him to try a dish I remembered being especially good -- the whole grilled squid. Luckily, they still had it, and it did not disappoint. It was just as delicious as I remembered. I also ordered the sautéed garlic bok choy, which was simple but very tasty. Unfortunately, my husband did not have the same experience. He ordered the tom yum soup with shrimp as an appetizer and the pad see ew with shrimp. Our waitress didn't write anything down when she took our order, and both dishes came out with chicken instead of shrimp. His glass of water was also dirty. When he pointed it out, she took the glass without saying a word and never brought back a clean one. She also never came by to check on us. My husband eventually had to get up and go to the register to tell her that he hadn't ordered chicken. Instead of apologizing or offering to correct the mistake, she simply said they were out of noodles. To make matters worse, the soup didn't look or taste anything like tom yum soup we've had before. The consistency looked almost congealed. He took only a few bites of the noodles and left most of them on the plate. He didn't finish the soup at all because it just wasn't good. In the end, we shared my dishes. What was especially disappointing was that she didn't even want to remove his two incorrect chicken dishes from our bill. And to top it off, the bathroom was out of order. I really do like supporting family-owned local businesses, which makes writing this even more disappointing. Between the poor service, dirty conditions, and how the situation was handled, we left feeling frustrated and disappointed. We won't be returning anytime soon.

The food, I am no expert in Filipino food but I love it, this restaurant did not disappoint. We ordered the bbq chicken skewers with vinegar sauce, the chicken was juicy and tender. 10/10 My partner ordered the lechon kawali meal, it came with lechon, plantains and rice. The others ordered tocino meal, chicken inasal and another order of lechon kawali. I heard the chicken inasal was okay, the tocino meal was good, tasty and the meat had a nice crunch. I ordered the Sizzling Kare Kare meal and it was my favorite out of them all. The meat was tender, the eggplant was soft and tasty and I loved the peanut sauce. 10/10 The final order to go was ilocos empanadas, it took a little over an HOUR since they were made to order. The empanadas were good, smelled amazing and the filling plus the flour were tasty. Does it live to the hype? I'm not sure. I would rate it a 7/10. The food does take a while so be prepared.

Back in a small retail area near SE 17th Street, this restaurant apparently opened in late 2019 and then had to close because of the pandemic. But it returned and now offers homemade food with terrific service. The place is small, seating about 30 in an at-home-at-the-dining-table style. Our server, who I think was an owner, was very friendly and even helped us choose a dish. We had to have lumpia, because it was one of the first Filipino foods we ever tried (decades ago). Although these were good, my friends' (shoutout to Analisa and Belinda) native eggrolls were much better. For our main entrees we had the adobosilog and the tapsilog. The adobo dish came with white rice topped with a fried egg, some shaved carrots, a couple of slices of cucumber and tomato. The adobo, though a tad salty, had a delicious soy-vinegar flavor and brought me back to the dish my pal Joe made for us a couple of times. The tapsilog was shaved beef that came with the same accompaniments but it was so salty that I had to mention it when the lady asked me how things tasted. She went and told the chef. (I did not complain about the adobo.) And he insisted that the price of the meal be removed from our bill. Ummm. OK. We splurged on dessert and shared the last piece of Ube (purple yam) cake (bought from an outside vendor) and a halo-halo. The cake was smooth and not too sweet. The halo-halo was shaved ice with ice cream, milk, and a variety of ingredients including beans, corn, and plain gelatin cubes. You have to mix it all up to get a good flavor. Hubby did not care for it because it was not sweet enough (yet he refused to add some condensed milk). It was my favorite dish of the entire meal. (I love cold, creamy, not-so-sweet desserts.) The portions don't match the price. While you get a humungous mound of rice, the meat is skimpy and entrees average about $20 each. And like most small places, there is a surcharge if you use a credit card instead of cash. Even with one meal removed, our bill was about $55 and would have been closer to $80. We do plan to go back and try some other dishes. Let's hope the salt content has lessened. (Remember chef: you can add salt but you can't remove it.)

What upset me most wasn't the mistake itself--everyone makes mistakes. It was the way we were treated afterward. Instead of apologizing, the employee blamed the weather and said, of course, it melted because my husband had taken it outside. She even rolled her eyes and gave us an attitude, as if the situation was somehow our fault. As long-time customers, we expected better customer service. A simple apology and a more courteous response would have gone a long way. I hope management addresses this, because we've always enjoyed coming here and would hate to see customer service decline.

I feel like if there was more organization, it would be better. However, the empanadas were very filling. One empanadas is enough to provide all the protein servings in a day. We ordered the beef empanadas, and it was definitely filled to the brim. It was an interesting take, with Filipino flavors of beef and cabbage stuffed inside, with a side of soy sauce vinaigrette. I also noticed a whole lechon placed on the table beside the cashier that looked like it is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I would love to come back on a less busy day to try the hot foods on the menu and maybe give a better rating next time.

The tables are old and weather-worn. The buffet is 18 trays of hot food, plus a condiment area and some desserts and coffee. For $18 it's all you can eat and soda or water is included. In downtown Miami that's madness. But the food. Downright amazing. You eat off paper plates on a cafeteria style tray. It is simple. And it is awesome. I served myself a bite of about 12 dishes, tasted them all, enjoyed them all, and went back for second of the best stuff. There are signs posted gently asking you only take as much as you can eat and that is totally reasonable. It's all you can eat man - take a little and if you want more go back! No big deal. But whereas some restaurants post these signs as a threat, the old lady was imploring us to go get another plate as we finished our first and second. Sorry granny I'm full!! Then she insisted we eat some desserts. She wants you to eat and I just loved that. For a woman pushing 80 she has energy and frankly, she is reason enough to visit. Fantastic experience. One of my all-time favorite Miami restaurants and it was like $22. Crazy.
