Ate here recently. Most of the staff was a bit surly (no welcome or hello upon entering and no goodbye upon leaving) except for our waitress who was rough around the edges but genuinely nice and helpful. This place has gone downhill since my last visit. The soup was a mystery (soup base of some kind with lots of mixed in egg). The tempura was extremely greasy. The sashimi was stringy and the Tonkatsu had a questionable flavor unlike I have ever tasted. Expected food similar to that found in Japan and at other Japanese eateries in Hawaii, but it could not be found here. Spend your precious dollars at another Japanese restaurant. Very disappointed. Stopped by this morning (Tuesday) to pick up a couple boxes of their flavorful inarizushi. I was willing to pay whatever they charged. The roll down window was closed but the front door was open. There were only two signs on their door...their restaurant hours and a sign that says no outside food or drinks allowed. So, I walk in and see an older Japanese lady inside folding boxes. I say to her, "excuse me, is this where I come to buy sushi?" She SNAPS at me saying, "we not open on Tuesdays. What! Don't you see the window is closed? That means we're closed." I was taken aback and apologized for not knowing that. I comment that there was no sign saying they were closed on Tuesdays. She SNAPS back, again, "don't you see the window closed? That means we're closed." I walk away confused about why she chose to disrespect me and why she didn't care about keeping a customer. Oh, well...I guess she's not knowledgable about the power of social media and YELP. The inarizushi is good but not worth the disrespect you may experience. My family went to the restaurant this afternoon at about 5:30 pm and spend $65, left $13 tips for the good server, Karen. My cousin had a wrist surgery and accidentally left her wrist support band that was from her doctor. She called the restaurant and talked to the cashier, asking if they could find her black wrist support band. They said that they looked and could't find it. They didn't want to ask the customers that were sitting at the same location that we were sitting. I took my cousin back to the restaurant and asked the customer, then an old Philippine waitress stated that they looked and gave me a bad time saying that they looked and couldn't find it and didn't want to disturb the customer. So, I asked the mother's son that were sitting at the same table, he reach down on the seat and found the black wrist band. I then, took my cousin to the airport to catch her flight to Maui, which she made just on time. The philippine waitress lied to me, she didn't look for it. Your employees should have more respect for the customer and have honesty and integrity, which they don't have. I left your restaurant very angry, you just lost a good customer. I won't be coming back to your restaurant, it;s unfortunate, because your restaurant is very good, except for that old philippine waitress, who lied to me. read more

We went to this restaurant on accident. We were looking on getting something to eat at the Big City Diner, but it was beyond packed and we were too hungry to wait in line. We stumbled to this place while looking for an alternative, but I am glad that we did. At first glance at the outside of the restaurant looked nothing more than another hole in the wall eatery. The inside decor did match my expectations from the outside look of it, but the food went far beyond. I ordered the Unagi Kabayaki with Sashimi. It is not at all a bad price for the quantity and quality of the food. In this dish, you get two half slabs of unagi filet, bowl of the soup of the day, which on that day, was fish soup, and a bowl of salad, and plenty rice (always a plus with me). The ahi sashimi was so fresh and beautifully decorated and at a good portion. You get 5 pieces of thick sliced fresh sashimi grade ahi, and you get all this at only 21.95. For the food, I give them 4 stars. The service was pretty good too. It wasn't extraordinary or the best I have ever had, but definitely what would be expected of a server. My water was never empty and they were always checking if we were okay, and we were sitting toward the back of the restaurant. For the service, I give 1 star, overall giving them a 5 star review. The only con I have about this restaurant is it is a little pricy for eating out frequently, but it is definitely a nice treat when the wallet can afford it. :) I will be returning to this restaurant for more great Japanese food. I may try the chirashi or the Nabe next time though. I recommend anyone seeking good Japanese food or just wants to try Japanese food at a decent price to seek out Kabuki Restaurant. read more

If there was a selection for negative stars, I'd give this place a negative rating... I went there for the first time today, which will obviously be my last. A lady who was paying in front of me had a $20.00 bill, that happened to land on my food (which was a cone sushi and hash). No one said anything.. she just slyly took it off the food thinking that I had not seen it happen. Then as I approached the lady helping me, I asked her if she could please change out the hash and sushi that the money had landed on. She seemed reluctant to my request and then a older japanese lady with short hair had stepped in, saying to me "That's why we say to hold on to your money" in a very demanding way. I told her that the money which landed on my food belonged to the lady in front of me when she was paying. The short haired lady repeated again, "thats why we say hold on to your money!" as if it was my fault that this happened. I'm never going back due to the terrible service and extremely bad attitude. Kabuki is a great restaurant with quality japanese food and friendly service. With various items to choose from, the menu pleases anyone's craving. I would recomend there teishoku it is wonderful. Went here today for lunch and this okazuya place is one of the first i've been to that doesn't have spam musubi. They do serve nori musubi with the umi in the middle. There is always a line but, they are pretty quick. Their come sushi seems to be popular and the bento boxes. They are locate in waimalu close to zippys and leonards. This little place has always been consistently great over many years. If you think that their Okazu-ya is great then you'll be surprised how much fresher everything inside tastes. We sat at the sushi bar. Two baby roaches and a momma roach came out onto the counter right in front of us. Ahi was ok and hamachi was ok. The Uni sashimi was old and melted. We tried to get someone to take our sake order. The sushi chef tried to get someone to take our sake order. After 10 minutes and the third roach we closed out and left. Informed the sushi chef of the roaches. Quietly informed the ladies that took my payment of the roaches. Nobody seemed to be appalled or surprised of the situation so just letting you know. This restaurant reminded me of a Japanese restaurant I used to frequent back home twenty years ago until it closed down. It has an old school feel to it with classic Japanese menu items. Although we had a large party, the service was fast and our waitress spoke both Japanese and English with us. I along with half the family had the miso butterfish, sashimi and tempura bento box. Kabuki restaurant is in serious need renovation. The beautiful koi pond appears to be way too small to accommodate the 4 large size koi that have barely enough room to swim. The tables are worn with age and the chairs have little padding and rusted legs. I was especially displeased with the size of the water cups, it would be more appropriate for hobbits or kindergarteners. The food on the other hand was okay. Japanese food is pretty standard no matter where you go. Honestly I always leave the restaurant feeling hungry for Mcdonalds and my pocket book empty. Not saying that the food isn't delicious because it is. I'm just saying if I had to weigh the price of each dish to its quality and quantity, I would probably go elsewhere. The service at this restaurant is fair. The server greeted our party promptly and was very pleasant to everyone. Despite our large party size the server was able to keep her composure and manage the crowd professionally. The staff also allowed our party to remain in the restaurant well after closing time and patiently waited for us to finish. The parking lot was under construction when we visited the restaurant which contributes to the already limited parking situation in this shopping center. My recommendation would be to park right in front of the restaurant or as close to it as possible especially if you plan to be there in the late evening hours. Overall the experience was enjoyable. The food was edible. Unfortunately I feel it was over priced. Would I eat there again? Probably not unless I had another party to attend and someone else picked the place. read more

This is my review of the restaurant, I always get the Nama Chirashi, which has assorted raw fish, octopus, shrimp etc. on a bed of seasoned rice. They are very good cuts of fish and very filling. My wife and I work close to the area and we would usually stop by here every morning for breakfast at the Okazuya window. We were at the window choosing our food and just having a good time laughing, trying to start our day positive. That was up until the Filipino ladies that work there started speaking in their Ilocano dialect which I understood. The older Filipino lady was conversing with a younger Filipino lady and said in Ilocano, "I don't know why he's laughing for," then I mentioned to my wife in English, "she said she doesn't know why we're laughing," and the younger Filipino lady looked at us shocked that I understood what they were talking about. Needless to say, it's very rude to talk about people especially if they're supporting your business. In our defense, we did nothing wrong but just enjoy ourselves before work started. But the line today took almost 20 minutes to move.. people need to know what they want or at least make an effort to move faster. Just called to see if the restaurant was open as they had construction going on a couple of weeks ago. The guy answers "kabuki" and I ask "are you open now?" And his sassy retort was "That's why I'm answering the phone". Jeez. Somebody not happy at their job? This review is for the Deli only. I LOVE the deli and have been coming here since hanabata days. With this visit, I had maki sushi, cone sushi, butterfish, and shrimp tempura.
