Located near Five Guys, Okome is located in the Ka Makana Aliʻi mall. The restaurant itself is very clean but seating is limited if you go during the busy time periods. But there are plenty of covered seating in the main food court seating area. The food itself was pretty good, I ended up getting their cold soba (due to the heat), assorted tempura and sushi's. The price is semi high but it's on par with everything else in the area. The service was good, so I suggest giving them a try especially if your in the mood for some good Asian food! read more

Stopped by this little place for lunch, and I'm glad we did. If course it has poke, sushi, sashimi, gyoza, and all of the expected stuff at a bento and sushi place. But this place also has make your own recipe donburi. The interior is small and not fancy, but definitely has a Japanese flair, with lots of wood and banners. There are wooden booths and some tables. You can see into the kitchen from the counter, and it looks like it's a very bustling kitchen, as they are preparing orders and grab & go food. You order at one of the counter, then add you go down the line, you can grab any of the sides from the heated case--takoyaki, shrimp tempura, gyoza, musubi, and a whole lot more. It looks like they are constantly refilling so it's fresh. Then you pass the grab & go section, which has sushi rolls already packaged. Finally you get to the register, where you will pay and wait for t you're number. There are no fountain drinks, so if you want a coke, if will be in the bottle. We both had the donburi with multigrain rice and misoyaki butterfish, but there are a lot of choices, like furikake, kalbi, or tonkatsu. Came to Kamakana Ali'i on the west side and decided to try Okome. Kamakana Alii has lots of parking, shops and places to eat. Okome has choices, you can order a bowl or Ala cart. Service was fast friendly and helpful. It's a casual sit down dining or you can do a take out. They also, have tables outside if you prefer people watching. This use to be one of our favorite places to eat at the mall. We would come quite often but found that over time, the quality of the food has gone down. On our last visit, I was disappointed in the service I received and couldn't believe what I saw as I was waiting for my order. It wasn't too crowded but there were a few patrons dining inside. I made an order with at the front of the counter where you can order combos. I proceeded down the counter passing the heating station with all of the tempura items toward the sushi station to make a sushi order. In the past, we ordered with the person making sushi but as I started taking to employee making sushi, the cashier spoke up and said that I needed to order with her. Totally fine, so I placed my sushi order with her. I ordered 2 combos one of which was udon noodles and a chicken katsu don bowl and the other was a miso butterfish and spicy ahi combo. I also ordered the mix okome nigiri set. Love that they packed the noodles and udon broth separately for take out. After placing my take out order, the cashier asked me if I needed a bag. I asked if there was a charge as I made a take out order and it was obvious that I ordered a lot of food which I could not carry without a bag. She proceeded to tell me yes for the charge of the bags. I assumed it was for the brown handle bags, so I asked if there was a charge for the no handle plastic bags (produce grocery bags) which were in a big roll on the side shelf. She said that those bags had a fee as well. I needed a bag for my order so paid for it. As I stood near the door waiting for my order, I was looking around and couldn't believe my eyes. I observed a male employee using his bare hands to move every piece of shrimp tempura under the heating station from the back to the front. A lady walked up with a tray and wanted to grab some items and just looked at him in awe... I was in shock at what he was doing. He was not wearing any gloves and didn't use any utensils to move the food. Instead, he used his bare hands. I'm not sure if this is common practice but I don't think we will be returning. I was also shocked that when I went to grab my order, another cashier offered 3 people ordering food free plastic bags. I was a bit bothered that I needed to pay for bags for my take out order and others were not charged for bags. Our food was just okay on this visit. I don't think we will be returning due to the unsanitary practices and quality of food. I hope that they are more consistent with other customers in charging them for plastic bags. I came here to get a simple cold udon and a side chicken Katsu cuz I was craving it. I've been here before and got the hot udon (was kinda salty) tempura was decent! This time I got the cold udon. It had a bunch of ice inside. I used to work at a udon restaurant and order cold udon at other places, never have I ever had a bunch of ice in my cold udon. They also don't separate the sauces or soups. So if you get cold or hot the sauce or soup will be in the same container as the noodles. The noodles were cooked good, not too soft or hard. Decently priced. I order a side chicken katsu, I'm pregnant and I was craving it... when I got it, it was so thinly pounded out and not juicy at all. Yes it was crispy but nearly burnt... it made me think I should've went to L&L cuz for the amount you pay for a size Katsu here was $11+ dollars. You could get a mini place of chicken katsu at L&L and it would be juicer and not so thinly pounded. I wouldn't get the katsu here again. So expensive and junk! I was totally bummed. I didn't eat it all that's how bad it was. Also they need to clean their soda machine cause the ice part looked so mildewy. In all I got a plain cold udon, 1 side of not good chicken katsu, & 1 piece of shrimp tempura for $22 something dollars. I was appalled. But I'm pregnant and was starving. It was pau hana Friday & I went out for a bite after work with my homie - Nate Y. so we decided to venture out to Kapolei to look for some grindages. My original plans were to check out this Chinese restaurant in Kapolei, only to find out they were not longer in business, and a Vietnamese restaurant had taken over the spot. So on to plan "B" where we decided to head over to the Ka Makana Ali'i Shopping Center to see if we could find another joint to try out. Upon walking around the mall, we decided to check out Okome Bento & Sushi, as Japanese food sound pretty good. As we walk into the restaurant, we were greeted right away, and after looking over the wall menu, I decided to get a Curry Chicken Katsu plate, and my friend ended up getting a Udon Noodle dish with a side of Pork Tonkatsu. What can I say about the food? Ai-yai-yai and shame on me for coming here! Just take a look at my food pic, and it will explain it all! My mystery chicken katsu was basically batter on pressed chicken as it was paper thin (and I'm not exaggerating!). My meal was highly disappointing, and for what they charged, vs. what I got wasn't worth it. My friend Nate, also commented on my plate, and was shocked by the chicken katsu serving. Yes, I get it that we live in an inflationary world where employers are forced to pay higher wages, on top of paying for material. It also doesn't help that insurance rates have gone up for all businesses. Ordered ahi Katsu bowl. Katsu was thin and not much fish, just batter. The fish also made my throat itchy after. I don't have any food allergies. I like the option they give to either have white rice or multigrain rice. The worker was also very nice to fulfill my request to have my veggies in a separate container. The concept is great to be able to have different food booths with the grab and go premade bentos but also able to order food made fresh. I think this bowl was around $12. Don't know if I'll be back for the ahi Katsu. But maybe I'll come back to try the sushi. read more

I want to start this by saying we typically like Okome, but today was a very different and disappointing experience. When we entered the young man in the beanie was already very rude and standoffish. My husband asked a question about one of the menu items but the young man at best partially answered the question before rolling his eyes and said, "you ready to or what???" My husband stated that he was trying to asking a question and restated the question. The kid again partially answered before throwing his hands up in a provoking gesture. He then walked away. Frustrated, we left and went elsewhere. We later came back though to speak to a manager. This staff initially said that "it depended on what we wanted" and when we explained it was an issue that resulted in us walking out, shared that they were busy and "if it was just a complaint," we had to wait a while- he did not even attempt to check or go talk to the manager. It felt that customers are not valued, and nor are staff encouraged to treat customers with respect. This experience, has unfortunately made us reconsider coming again. In a business where customers are the primary source of income, it is disappointing that so little consideration and effort is made. read more

Went to Okome Sushi & Bento Kapolei this afternoon, ordered 2 choice entree, Tempura & Tonkatsu. Cashier name Andrew was very kind, courteous and helpful, we need more cashiers like him. Food was so-so, Tempura was tasteless, Tonkatsu was a bit dry and thin, overall food was not as good as in the past, such a disappointment, they don't seem to be any good Japanese restaurants here in Kapolei. 5/11/24 Tried to do a take out order via the Yelp app as I was in a rush and I needed the food to be done by the time I got there. It kicked out and didn't go through. So I had to call in order and pay at the establishment. I've been here 2x in a week for their butterfish bowl ( rice only). as I was craving butterfish. Loved it. The side orders of takoyaki and tempura ... I want them all but the prices will make you slow your roll! One shrimp tempura is about $2.25 one and a side of zucchini tempura ( 3 pieces) was about that much. Second time eating at Okome. We ordered the "new" Beef Sukiyaki with Kim Chee Udon, Pork Belly with Kim Chee Bento and a side order of Takoyaki. All dishes were tasty and a little on the salty side. I loved the Takoyaki as it was fresh made, crisp on the outside and chewy squid on the inside. The sauce on the takoyaki was not overpowering. The udon soup base was too salty to consume, but the udon noodles were cooked just right. The beef sukiyaki was savory and tender. The pork belly bento was full of flavor, sliced and well seasoned pork slices and a good amount of kim chee and other vegetables. The miso soup and salad comes with the bento. You will pay a little more for the bento. Service was minimal as it is mostly for take out. There are a few tables indoors, however the tables are not serviced or cleaned while we were there. The young girl (cashier) just handed them to me without any bag like I was supposed to carry all of them with my bare hand?! Please make it make sense! I think that Okome's one of the original tenants at Ka Makana and I ate here many years ago but it's taken me this long to finally make it back. Looking for something quick to eat, I dropped in on a weekday an hour before closing. The restaurant was fully staffed but there were at least 9-10 people in line. The line moved sooooo slowly and it took a while to reach the register to pay. I'm not sure if my tempura don was fried to order but I did wait about 5 minutes to pay and then another 5 minutes for my food. Quick enough but not super fast food, for sure. The tempura bowl was a great value and good -- three shrimp, a couple of green beans, kabocha, potato, and a few zucchini, everything served over rice, which was unfortunately on the hard (undercooked?) side. The cup of tempura sauce to pour over was tastier than the usual. Yummy and a great deal for this kind of food. Ordered the udon and soup and noodles are packed separate so if you plan to eat it later, the noodles wouldn't get soggy. The tempura items are made fresh but a little oily sitting under the warmers. Sitting is on wooden benches with cement floors. AC if any, is low. Eating area is warm. My Bara bowl rice was nice and warm with fresh fish. Would I come back? A Hairy Situation: Why I Can't Roll with Okome Sushi Anymore. I wanted to love Okome Sushi, I really did! The staff was super friendly and welcomed me the moment I walked in, but I just can't stomach what I experienced here. The deal-breaker? A long, thick strand of hair in my sushi and I'm talking a hair so thick it matched the size of the spicy ahi chunks! Gross. It wasn't just a one off slip, every table, booth and even the soda machine area seemed to have a permanent layer of grease or spilled liquids. I mean, I'm all for a good vibe, but sticky surfaces don't exactly scream "fresh" or "clean." I've given Okome a few tries, hoping it would improve, but this was the final straw. The welcoming cashier can't cover up the lack of cleanliness and while a friendly greeting is great, I'd rather focus on what's actually going in my mouth. We came here after I passed my driver's test in Wahiawa! YAY! My husband rarely suggests places to eat because he trusts my judgment more lol but this time he picked this place. It wasn't busy when we got there. I like how they have a regular menu and you can also add extra stuff on the side, like their fried stuff or sushi. We ordered: * Furikake Ahi Katsu -- kind of dry. I've had better ones but for a more reasonable price and extra sides. * Spicy Poke -- really not with the price! I literally told my husband he would've gotten way more poke from Foodland lol. The portion was very tiny, it had more rice than poke. * Fried Oysters -- i loved this! The price was reasonable. Although I wish, it wasn't just sitting out under that lamp. Okome is Japanese for the singular raw grain of rice and having that clever name is cute but puts a higher standard in my opinion for bento regardless. I do frequent here often though not from this area, finding bento options aren't as much available so having this here is nice and convenient and the self serve choices are a nice touch. As soon as you enter there's a menu right agains the wall with huge pictures with prices so it's so easy to understand and you choose not only rice dishes but udon as well. They are quite flexible with options as the udon you can substitute for soba for no additional charge and add on a mini donburi or sushi as well. The rice dishes are a bit more complicated as you can order it as is or make it into a bento with one or two choices which includes rice, salad and miso soup (for bento and combos only) though I'm sure the prices vary depending on the items which I'm not really sure about so I kept it simple and went with the Spicy Poke Bowl with rice. After I places my order you walk the counter where there's a series of hot fried items you may add on to your meal that are so tempting and I couldn't resist, it's to take home for later but got some oysters (mom's fave), calamari and veggie croquette. There are a few tables inside but I chose to eat outside as it was such a beautiful sunny day I really wanted to take full advantage of that, but wasn't ready of how simple the bowl looked...omg the sauce tasted really great but wasn't spicy at all and really didn't like the raw onions so it was quite disappointing, thank goodness it had some limu but the rice...it was okay. It's a great causal place for some fast friendly service to create your own bento/bowl I'd actually would love to try their udon next time as I do love my noodles!! Thank you!! read more
