I've been to Kabuto twice and it's a great Teppanyaki place. As with most Teppanyaki restaurants, the portions are large. The chefs put on a fun show and the service is attentive. I haven't had the sushi so I can't comment on that. A great place for an office lunch. read more

NEVER EVER AGAIN! I went in person two weeks in advance to make a reservation for15 for my husband's birthday. Upon arriving we were told that our table was given to another group because "they insisted upon THAT table". We asked if they had a reservation also and we were told no but "they insisted and wouldn't take no for an answer". My group of 15 had to wait for 45 minutes while we waited for another group to finish so we could sit at the double grill. Once seated I told the manager, Kai, that we had to be somewhere at 9:30. Our reservation was made for 6:30. I made sure that I left us ample time to eat and drink and for delays if there were any. He told me that wouldn't be a problem and he was sending the chef out. 15 minutes later a waiter came over to ask if we were ready to order. We informed him that we hadn't even gotten drinks yet. So he left (I'm unsure as to why) and came back to take our drink order. He brought two bottles of wine to the table but no glasses. It took another 10 minutes for the glasses to come. Once we all had drinks he asked if we were ready to order. We told him we had not received menus. He again walked away and came back with 4 menus for our group of 15. We had to share menus in order to decide on our dinner options. Eventually, the two chefs came to our table. One chef (name unknown) was pretty boring and mediocre. The other chef (he said his name was Rice) was PHENOMINAL! He almost made me forget how terrible the experience had been up until that point. He was very personable and gave everyone sake shots. He told jokes and made us laugh from the time he got there until he finished cooking. Once all of the food was on our plates we realized that the no name chef neglected to give rice to his side of the table. We asked for the rice and it wasn't brought to us until our dinner was 3/4 of the way eaten. When dinner was finished we all thought that the nightmare was over. I thought wrong. I requested a discount due to the subpar service we received. I was told again, by Manager Kai, that we would get a 10% discount. We were given our several hundred dollar bill that wasn't split up and no discount was taken off. I brought it to the attention of our waiter who had no idea what I was talking about. NO COMMUNICATION! The manager didn't inform the waiter about the discount. I had to take a pen and break down the check myself so that they could split it up. It took them 20 minutes to finally bring us the split checks. AGAIN THEY WERE WRONG! The entrees were $2-4 more on the checks than what was listed on the menus. One couple had an extra entrée on their check. When we arrived a cake was given to the hostess to have brought out after we finished diner for my husband's birthday. It never came out, no one said anything to us about it, and we forgot about it with all of the aggravation we had endured. We did not walk out the door until after 10:00 p.m. WE WERE THERE FOR OVER 3 1/2 HOURS!!! We were later for our 9:30 engagement and my husband's birthday dinner was ruined by these people. They have no idea what they are doing. All I kept hearing is how sorry they were and that they were still new. That is NO EXCUSE! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE! read more

It's rare that I speak ill of an establishment so actually posting this speaks VOLUMES to my disappointment. The atmosphere was lovely, not what you would expect from the surrounding establishments. We were BEYOND disappointed in the quality of the sushi. There was a horrible after taste after each of the rolls we ordered. My friend and I are well acquainted with high quality sushi and this was far from it. After only having tried each of the rolls once, we informed the waitress of the strange after taste and unappetizing nature of the meal. While we were very cordial about our issues with the food, the server appeared to be deeply offended. It was taken away and we were not offered any alternatives or compensation for the meal. This is the best Japanese steak house I've ever been to! I was brought here for my birthday and everything was great! I got the shrimp and chicken combo. The portions were very generous, and I ended up taking most of my meal home. I also came here for sushi and was not disappointed. I'm making it a point to review Kabuto while the experience is still fresh in my mind b/c for me, the food, experience, and general environment paled in comparison to what you'd come to expect at a restaurant. First of all the customer service was poor. My family hosted a birthday dinner for a relative here and our party was large -- never a problem in the past but Kabuto had trouble from the beginning accommodating us. Some of us had to stand over 30 min while the staff scrambled to figure out: (1) who would be the designated waiters for such a large group, (2) where to pull chairs from to accommodate the group. The aura of the waiters was unwelcoming and not helpful. The food was of poor quality, very greasy and salty without the flavor to match. I was happy to leave as were our waitstaff. The hibachi cook was funny and skilled, it was enjoyable to watch him "perform", the two stars I am rating Kabuto are specifically for him -- Panda Express carryout would have been better! read more

The best thing I can say about this restaurant is the decor is beautiful.... Unfortunately the service was absolutely horrible and the food was just okay. My husband and I have been there twice and neither of us were very impressed with the preparation of the sushi or our meals during either visit. During our most recent visit our waitress seemed completely confused and messed up several things that we asked for (sushi as an appetizer before our meal, no mushrooms in my meal, etc.). I will say it may not have been completely her fault as it appeared that she was stretched very thin as we saw her helping almost every table in the front of the restaurant by herself. If this restaurant wants people to come back they need to hire more staff and work on their Japanese flavor profiles a little. read more

This place was ok.. I'm assuming it was the owner or manager but we were getting sushi and wanted to sit at the sushi bar. He came over to my husband and I saying we looked very young. We both are 28 and said we were 28 he continued to bug us about our age. We were not drinking we just wanted sushi. He made us feel very uncomfortable like we were doing something wrong. Finally I said is there an age limit to sit at the sushi bar that we were not there to drink. He finally said ok and left us alone. The sushi was just ok nothing to write home about. We got the deep fried duck however which was insanely delicious I highly recommend the duck. If you want amazing sushi go to arigato on belair rd! Can't be beat. read more

Very very good sushi! I have always been very satisfied. The sushi is very fresh and always looks great. The food in the dining area is also great depending on the "cook" sometimes the entertainment is better than others. The wait to eat in the dining area is always very long even when we called ahead and the one female at the front desk is not at all friendly. If these were not issues this would be a 5 star. Okay, based on rave reviews, I took my girlfriend and her father to dinner. I called ahead and made a reservation for 5.30 as he preferred to eat early. We showed up and the hostess, who apparently was more concerned with a phone call, waived us to another area where we waited to be seated. While we waited, another trio came in and were seated immediately. Oh, did I fail to mention my girlfriend's father is old, frail, needs a cane to stand and, even then, not for any long periods. I went back and pointed it out to the hostess, who was still on the phone and she seemed (?) to understand. Apparently not. We still stood there until I complained to a waitress, someone who appeared to be somewhat in charge and, again, the hostess. Finally, someone came up to seat us and directed us to the back of the restaurant. I pointed out that my girlfriend's father could not walk that far and they sat us at a convenient table. They then moved another group who had been seated near a large party to the table we were seated at which was fine for us, it filled the table. We ordered drinks and my girlfriend's father wanted a Bud Light. It was listed along with four other Lights on the menu. We were told they had none and he ended up with a Mich Ultra. So far, so so. I ordered two appetizers: an Avocado Maki and Tuna Tartare. Needless to say, they did not come until after our chef had already loaded our plates with the rice and noodles. I complained and the chef told the waitress to remove them. I would note, our chef "J R" was wonderful. He understood the situation, agreed our complaint was valid and it was a done deed. I also have to say, I do not hold any fault with the waitress. I do not blame her for late service of appetizers and I commend her for making sure she had out drink orders properly entered. She was courteous throughout. Okay, now I need to say something positive. The chef, J R, was excellent. He was personable as well as professional. I've learned to accept the "entertainment" of knife juggling, flaming onions, etc. but, afterwards, his food preparation was spot on. My Scallops were perfect. Properly seared on the sides and wonderfully rare in the center. Everyone at the table enjoyed their selections. As we left, I commented to the hostess who was still on the phone, that she should really look up and see who was coming in. She would have seen an elderly gentleman with a cane and should have helped him. Be aware of your guests and look out for their needs. read more

Worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant ever. My husband and I are both vegetarians and we always make it a point to let the server know beforehand to avoid confusion. We happened to be in the area and thought to pop in for dinner. I ordered a basic sushi (sweet potato tempura and a maki roll) which showed up promptly. My husband ordered his favorite: pineapple fried rice. The fried rice showed up and immediately we noticed the obvious shrimp on top. We reported it and the server apologized and said he forgot to let them know. Several minutes later, the fried rice showed up again, and this time, with chicken. I am not sure what the difficulty is in understanding, but twice is a complete waste of our time. I nearly finished my meal by that time, sharing it with my husband since we had been waiting for over an hour at this point. When it finally showed up, with just a "sorry about that" we were fed up and just wanted to leave so we took the food to go. The food was also sub par. The sweet potato tempura was not cooked fully and tasted raw and hard. The fried rice was mediocre at best. We had a similar mistake happen at an Indian restaurant and the manager was gracious enough to give us our meal for free. No such curtesy here. They didn't even bother to offer a complimentary dessert or something. Not that we wanted any of it but for wasting our time and bringing us incorrect food, TWICE, the least you could have is the manager come and apologize or something. I've been coming here since they opened years ago. It saddens me to have to write this review. Over the years the food has remain the same, hibachi and sushi. And I enjoy the drinks as well. The service on the other hand, has declined. The wait staff and unfortunately the management. The chefs are my favorite! On my visit last night, the wait staff was nowhere to be found. When the waiter finally came, the Caucasian patrons were waited on and not my party, African-Americans. My drink took 30 mins while everyone else's was brought out timely. The waiter spoke to me with attitude and distaste. I asked to speak with the manager, whom was unconcerned with my bad experience not my concerns. So does the good is great. However the service at this place is horrible. First we sat down we ordered our drinks and food. Next other people sat down and did the same. Once it was time for the food to be served we (the blacks) were served AFTER the other guests (all white). We got the last of rice, noodles, and protein. Oh the only thing we got first was the veggies. The server who was coming around for drinks STOPPED acknowledging us except when it came time for the check she made she asked us. We went as a family with our 4 kids. The Hibachi chef was wonderful. We didn't order bar drinks or sushi, however the couple sharing our table did and they came out very quickly and looked amazing. Our food was great, the kids can't wait to go back. Previously their favorite place for dinner out was Kobe. Prices are about the same. I am not a very happy customer right now. We ate dinner there this evening and, although our hibachi chef was good, our server left a lot to be desired. She had an attitude from the moment she took our drink order til the moment she brought our bill. We asked for a high chair twice and never did get one. Then, after we got home, I looked at the check and realized she charged us an 18% tip (there were only two of us, I thought that only happened with large parties) and didn't tell us. I added a 20% tip when I paid, which I would not have done had I realized she slipped that in. Needless to say, we won't be back. (And before you criticize me for not going over the check with a fine toothed comb before I paid it, had I been able to have my 2 year old restrained in the high chair I requested TWICE and never got instead of having to deal with him climbing all over me and getting into everything, I MIGHT have been able to.) read more

So check this out we went to Kabuto on June 4 around 7:30pm, it was freezing no big deal, the cook comes and cooks does his thing barely talks anyone no show, the food sucks didn't put a bit of seasoning, none, than we notice that he doesn't have any shrimp left and my wife ordered shrimp, proceeds to get confrontational with my wife saying no you ordered salmon, no dude we ordered shrimp and salmon, he throws the salmon away and says talk to the server it's her fault deal with her, server says they will cook her food in the back I said no called the manager over, the manager says what is our problem with the food that she is sorry, we proceed to tell her what's wrong how the cook was rude and raised his voice and got the order wrong and that we aren't gonna pay for it we have not touched our food, and got water, we didn't come to hibachi to have them cook the food in the back, the manager proceeds to say no you have to pay for the food or she will call the cops and we refused we stated that we didn't touch the food and we refuse to pay and she can call the cops if she wants too, she states no ok you can leave, Bottom line the service was horrible the management was horrible food was under cooked and under seasoned don't recommend this place at all. read more

Went here on the 10th of August for my daughters birthday and let me just say that I am not impressed at all. The food was good but my waiter acted like he didn't want to be there and when my daughter called him over to ask him a question about the food he was border line rude. Our "meal" at Kabuto could be titled "Friday's Finest Fat-Fest!" When the server came out with his cart filled with grill ingredients and condiments, there was also a mound of butter that weighed at least four pounds, if not more. EVERYTHING put on the grill was lubricated with this dairy fat - the fried rice and fried noodles had, between them, close to a POUND of butter. Absolutely dripping wet. The vegetables, and then, the shrimp, chicken, and steak, were also drowned in butter. And MORE butter! Japanese cooking is done with oil, not shovel-fulls of butter. But Americans love fat, so that's what Kabuto serves up. As for tossing bits of food into people's mouths, it was like watching someone feed the family dog. Some people love this place. Their hibachi is OK. I find that a lot of times I get hard pieces or rice and/or the chicken has a weird texture. However, their sushi is THE BOMB! I'm literally addicted to their "Tuna Amazing" roll. I love pepper tuna, and the wasabi sauce along with the crunchy white tun just really does something special. I've had it for dinner along with a miso soup (which is in my top 2 ever tied with Chopstix) for the past 3 nights. I've also had their basic rolls like the California, spicy tuna, salmon, etc. and they're all very fresh. I have also had their yaki soba which I enjoy. If it wasn't for the darn hibachi they would have a 5 from me for sure. I actually struggle between a 4 and a 5 just because the sushi is so good. Yelp needs a 1/2 star options! read more

I had the volcano roll & the shrimp tempura & they both tasted pretty good. I usually only like the volcano roll from XS but the sushi here was just as good. This is my favorite sushi place so far. The atmosphere is nice and the service is great. I have only had the sushi here but they do have the grill. We like to sit at the bar and watch the sushi being made. The chefs are fast and entertaining to watch. The prices are great as well. We usually get six rolls which are all rather large and it cost less the $40. Go during happy hours to get that deal. Love this place and am ready to go again!!! read more

Usually good service and good food, tonight however both were in question. My daughter and sister in law ordered hinachi, my wi for e and i did not. NO issue with the hibachi, our chef was awesome. I cannot say as much for the waitress or the kitchen. My apetizer was overcooked chicken satay, and my wife almoat got a lap full of ponzu when her appetizers came to the table. Kabuto's was not for me.... I'm not sure if we (hubby, myself, sister in law, & her man) visited on a "bad" day or what but it was not one of my better meals out. It seemed to me the order-taker was having a hard time understanding the customer's orders and despite my repeated advisement that I needed my vegetables separated due to an onion allergy, when the fresh veggies were brought for cooking, there was no separation of mine... so no veggies in this meal for me . To be fair, the drinks that hubby and I ordered at the bar in the front while waiting the the arrival of our dinner companions were pretty good though. The ambiance is relaxing and the waterfall display in the entryway was nice and a good backdrop for photo taking. Overall in my honest opinion, Kabuto's is NOT Kobi's (although they try to make the experience similar) and it will not be my choice to return again. read more

This is my new favorite sushi place!! There are some good ones downtown, but, it's so nice not to have to pay for parking and then possibly have to walk six blocks. We went for happy hour and sat at the bar. This place is beautiful! Not sure how I missed it the last year or so. We had at least eight of the happy hour items. Full size rolls and appetizers for $2 off each. The sushi was cold and fresh. The bartender was pleasant and right on time with refills. She told us happy hour was seven days a week too! We mostly got sashimi, so there's not much to say about that when it's fresh. We also tried the coconut shrimp appetizer. Lightly fried tempura shrimp with a creamy coconut sauce. Delicious. Was almost like dessert. We're looking forward to going back. read more
