I always feel finding a different sushi place kind of crap shoot. We had business in Santa Fe, NM and decided to try out Kai Sushi and wow what a great surprise! The food was fantastic. Found my new favorite, it's an appetizer: jalapeno stuffed with tuna & cream cheese with a wonderful sauce. I ate two plates! Just got into town, got a hotel and looked up Sushi Bar and found this place 1.5 miles away. Lots of bad reviews but My EXPERIENCE WAS WONDERFUL. Waitress was named Aspin, she was very kind and helpful. Food was very good, their sweet shrimp w/ heads were​ the best I've ever had and I have been eating sushi for over 45 years. I sat at the bar and the chef was very professional and experienced. More than HAPPY with my experience and food. There hot Saki was very good quality and priced right as was their food. Decent place wih a solid dinner. They have the big three beers: Asahi, Kirin, Saporro. This is unusual but welcomed. Having all three should obligatory for a japanese place. The yakiniku was good but not as refined expectidly as a tepanyaki. All and all decent place with some Japanese specialities like Udon and katsu. Staff was nice and I would just like to see Soba also and some less expensive sushi. read more

Most mediocre "sushi" I've ever had. Perhaps I am spoiled, coming from Seattle and San Francisco (and having been to Japan), but my simple order of avocado roll, California roll, eel roll, and my special request of smoked salmon with avocado in a roll ended up mostly in the garbage. The Cali roll was made with flavorless surimi (the rice isn't even sweetened), the smoked salmon wasn't smoked, it was raw (we can't eat raw fish around here, ergo my specificity!) but the unagi and straight avo rolls were tolerable. Next time I'll try another sushi joint in my new town. read more

This place sucks. 1) the menu online bears no resemblance to the food they actually serve in the restaurant or how much it will cost you. 2) my water tasted like cleaner. 3) what flavor my fish had was over fishy and gross. 3) the tempura was super greasy. Horrible service we got the grumpiest girl in the world, we just came from there. Slim pickings, basic selection....No ambiance, sushi was mostly rice, not fresh, not good quality, no taste. Just do yourself and your wallet a favor, go to Smiths (supermarket) right across the parking lot and you will find their fresh sushi section 90% better :) and a nice selection. read more

My wife and I just had one of the best sushi meals in Santa Fe. Having just returned from a 14 week business trip in LA, we were pleasantly surprised at the quality, freshness, and menu simplicity at Kai's. Definitely better than what we left in SoCal. Yes, we we're surprised, too. Previous reviewer complained about the lack of fresh crab. A novice, obviously... You eat what is in season... And ASK the chefs what is fresh, in season, or recommendations. Will definitely move Kai's to the top of the list. Prices VERY reasonable, too. read more

I come here often and usually the service is on point. Came here today and the waitress was not very helpful. She was being rude and she was very unhelpful, she forgot simple things. The only time she was on point is when she deliver the check She was very uninterested in working. But otherwise, the food was beautifully made and I recommend the food. read more

I was craving sushi last night and I decide to go with Kai sushi big mistake, I ate about 9:00 pm take out the salmon roll and the spicy tuna. An hour after I ate the sushi last night my stomach started cramping and I started to fever and get body chills. I thought it was weird cause I eat sushi all the time. So this morning I wake up to the worst cramps I have had in years and vomiting multiple times today. I am traumatized by sushi now especially there at Kai. I have been eat sushi for years and this is the first time I had experiences a bad sushi. read more

Four of us stopped in tonight and had miso soup, salad, green tea and dinner. The food was fine and we were pleased with the service. When the check came we were charged 10.00 for one pot of tea with one tea bag and four of the small tea cups. When we asked why we were charged so much, she finally realized that we had only one small pot for the 4 of us which was never refilled nor were we asked if we wanted more. We went during happy hour and sat at the sushi bar. We had 4 special rolls and 3 different appetizers. The taste/quality of the rolls were outstanding. The Sushi chef(s) were very personable and happy. They definitely add a bright spot to the place! Service was excellent and when they found out they run out of a item on the menu i ordered they compensated with some Salmon (I never even asked)! Prices were very reasonable for Santa Fe and there was plenty of free parking. It was a very pleasant surprise finding a place like this here. We will definitely be back! read more

I have spent ten months in Santa Fe coming from Hawaii.This is by far the best Sushi Bar,Japanese rest.for me.The two sushi chefs are great with surprises if you ask and the staff is very helpful.This is one of the few places I will miss as we go back to Hawaii. read more

I've been to two sushi places in Santa Fe area (other one in downtown), and this is the better of the two. Coming from a coastal city, I can't say that the fish is that great, but they keep a decent selection available. Not happy at all. Ordered a baked salmon roll and the salmon was good but all else was awful. Seaweed was soggy and difficult to chew through, California rolls were not made of an artificial crab salad type but just the imitation crab piece itself. The entire roll was baked??? Maybe I'm used to Cal rolls in California but warm avocado is horrible. I prefer the salmon on afterwards. I had to scrape my roll off the foil and the rice was burnt and hard to get off the bottom which made everything fall apart. Received our orders separately, I was the only one eating when mine finally came. A very small vegi roll for $7. I got more green tea ice cream than the vegi roll. It was 3 scoops and the vegi was 5-6 small cuts. I was thirsty for hours afterwards too. Would not return nor recommend; overall experience could've been better. None of the people in the photos were there; could've just been a bad day but wouldn't take the $ risk again. Place was not quiet, it was louder than you can imagine, I couldn't even have a conversation. This isn't their fault but beware that the customers do not make the ambience quiet by any means. read more

First and foremost, the sushi was awesome. I was very, very satisfied with my meal. That said, the service was the worst I can remember in a LONG time. The waitress acted very inconvenienced at the fact that we even dare to be in her restaurant. Never got a thank you or even a smile for that matter. She seemed really angry the entire time. But like I said, the sushi was great. If you can handle a sour attitude from your waitress, this is the best sushi I've had so far in Santa Fe. The best part about this place was the Diet Coke. The tape on the booth seats did not add to the decor of the restaurant. There was a large party next to us with a reserved table and when the party exited, they took a very long time to clear the many dirty dishes from the table. The service was good and our server was very nice but the food was horrible. The rolls were not large enough to pay what they were priced at and the rolls were not packed properly and very difficult to eat because they kept falling apart. Given the price point of this place the food should be much tastier than it was. 5 pieces in a $15 sushi roll was unacceptable. As expensive as this place was, I expected a higher class of a dining experience. I'm visiting from Florida so I may be spoiled with sushi restaurants there but this place was not good. We should have stuck with our first choice of Mexican for dinner tonight. read more
