First time trying Kai Sushi at Chicago. Found it at random in yelp. At the beginning I was anxious about the food but then I heard 2 other guest at the next table. One of them seemed to treating his friend and he said with great confidence "I think Kai is doing a good job". The nigiri is great. Like the guest said. Rice is soft and fluffy. Two of us shared the sushi platter (15 pieces), Chicago fire roll, and lobster mania roll. The tuna that came with the sushi platter was no good. It was room temperature/warmish. The other fish on the platter was pretty decent. I really liked the Chicago fire roll. The fish was chilled and there was a decent amount in it. The lobster mania roll was good too, a tad too spicy for me, but enjoyable. The fish overall wasn't horrible, but not the greatest. It was fresh enough for me not to throw up after, but it also didn't melt in my mouth. Reason for my return would be because of convenience rather than for quality. Our waitress was so patient and kind. When we first walked in we were deciding between outside and inside. We sat outside, she brought us waters and was handing us menus as we decided that we wanted to sit inside again because it was too windy. Our food was delicious, and I will come back here anytime because the staff was just so lovely, kind, and understanding. I thought this place was ok fish and mediocre service. I went at an odd hour around 3:30PM so there was only one other table there. A ton of staff working though and it was impossible to get their attention to order... I ordered the squid salad and tried the cucumber salad / miso they give you with the chirashi bowl. Most of the stuff tasted like Korean cuisine, was a bit pickled and not usually what you'd get. Squid salad didn't taste too fresh and didn't care to finish it. When I got my chirashi bowl I thought the fish to rice ratio was off (wasn't much rice). The rice wasn't the usual sweet vinegar taste. It was very salty and I had to drink a lot of water to down the taste which was a bummer. I think I would try other places before considering coming back. read more

Great, tasty, no frills sushi place with a nice outdoor patio. The first time I went here I wasn't too impressed. Then I learned about the lunch special and realized the place is actually pretty great. The crunchy crab roll was great, the spicy salmon was just okay but the presentation was great, and the ocean roll was great (but that's not part of the lunch special). Also I've never been a fan of miso soup but their version of it is fantastic. I normally order 2-3 rolls at sushi restaurants to fill me up. In this case, I only ordered one because I had a hot yoga class right after. Just not a good idea to stuff my face if I don't want to die. The restaurant would be cuter in the evening, when it's not sunny outside. The lack of lights inside combined with the sun shining through the huge windows didn't make a warm atmosphere. They have outdoor seating, which is nice for the summertime. The service was friendly and attentive. No complaints there. I ordered an Ocean roll as recommended on Yelp. My first impression was "Wow, that's a lot of sauce on the plate......and swirled so nicely!" The roll was really good. I was trying so hard to savor each bite, which was very, very difficult to do. I went there last night for dinner. We ordered seaweed salad and three rolls - Dancing Eel, Ocean, & West Town. Ocean was definitely my favorite among all three. Dancing Eel was very good, but it was a little too sweet. West Town would have been very good had I not ordered the other two rolls. Overall, this is a good sushi place. Well... there you go, coming from a South Looper local. This location recently opened, (and while I haven't been to the other location), the other reviews from Grand Ave. location boasted high ratings. I figured the sushi would be pretty good and in fact it was grrrrreat! Their staff is super friendly, the right amount of chatty and attentive. Our server told us to mark down what we wanted on the paper menu to place our order, and just confirmed with us before he ran it back to the sushi chef. Between two people, we had the deep fried Texas roll, six pieces of escolar and their spicy yellowtail roll (which was their special of the day, with lots of avacado and garnished with parsley sprigs and slices of fresh jalapenos). All of their fish was very fresh. Definitely order the ESCOLAR under the "sushi & sashimi" section. It's the white fish, two pieces for $5.00. The Escolar was perfect, and they don't skimp on their fish. It draped the entirety of the sushi rice, meaning there was more sashimi than the rice and the chef cuts it in generous slices, which is a plus in my opinion. It was buttery, smooth and fresh. I ended up ordering three orders of the escolar alone. That day, they were out of Quail Egg Shots, which would have been fun, but our server was apologetic, said that it was BYOB pointed out that if need be, Traders Joes was close by, heh. Since they just opened, we got some complimentary edamame, orange slices and green tea dessert with chocolate sauce with our meal. Overall, they did a great job setting up shop and they offer good sushi. Had a really great dinner. If you're ever craving sushi, take-out or dine in, I'd head right on over to this location! read more

So if you are looking for a place outside the hustle and bustle of the Chicago city, here is a good place. I ordered the Two Roll lunch special for $9.95. It comes with a choice of 2 rolls: california, spicy crab, crunchy crab. spicy tuna, salmon roll, tuna roll, or avocado. You also get a starter of miso soup and a dessert of an orange wedge. Since I am allergic to shellfish, I went for the spicy tuna and salmon roll. The fish, to me, tasted a little bit sour. For the price, I was not expecting fresh fish, but at least use frozen fish that is not sour. The spicy sauce for the tuna masked the taste a bit, but the salmon was a bit hard to go down. The shoyu (soy sauce) helped it go down. They did have some quality kikoman branded shoyu, so I give them that. My friends who ordered the crunchy crab said it was their favorite roll. It seemed like a good choice to stick to the imitation crab. Since I am literally a huge sushi fan, it didn't fill me up. I needed to get a snack after to fill me up for a lunch portion. Maybe people who do not eat a lot would enjoy a mass quantity of sushi would enjoy Sushi Kai better. I personally will go to a place with an all you can eat. It's just preference I believe for quantity, but the fish (maybe it was just the day) did not taste right to me. read more

At least I tried and I know I don't like it. The restaurant is cozy and off the beaten path. There's about 10 tables in the restaurant. The staff is very friendly and greet you as soon as you walk in the door. Our waitress was very attentive and kept out tea cups filled. The carry out business does well. Stopped by Kai Sushi after work with a co-worker who received recommendation from our boss on an affordable sushi spot. It's kind of hidden but definitely worth finding. Right on 13th and Michigan! We sat on the patio since it was such a warm summer night. Before we got our main dishes we were served this fresh cucumber salad as a complimentary appetizer. I loved this because I was super hungry! (Pictured) I ordered an unagi roll and spicy crab roll. (Pictured, left-unagi, right-crab) Each plate was no more than $5-$7. Also each plate came with 8 rolls! The rolls were huge too. The rice on each was nice and sticky, exactly how I like it. The unagi roll was my favorite, I've never tried eel before but now that's definitely going to be my go-to. The spicy crab could have been spicier but it was mild enough to satisfy me. Our dessert was a beautifully cut orange that my friend and I shared, this was also complimentary :) Love places that serve free food! Service was sub-par. Didn't have to wait long for our food either. Server checked in on us once but we were there near closing so that's a bit understandable. Kai sushi is my go to neighborhood sushi spot. It's delicious, consistent and more competitively priced compared to two other nearby sushi spots - sumi and south coast. All three are good options but kai is my go to. I've had a number of different rolls from their menu and all are fairly good, but the standout for me is the ocean roll. It's shocking that a place like this have such high review. Either the other reviews are done by fake accounts or chicago just really have no idea what is a decent sushi place. I would give this negative stars if I could. The sashimi was NOT fresh, especially the SWEET SHRIMP. We had to eat RAW SHRIMP HEAD, yes you heard me. Kai Sushi, everything you put on the plate should be eatable, don't give me fried shrimp head with the sweet shrimp sashimi if you don't cook it through!! If this isn't bad enough, the manager's reaction is asking if we want more shrimp head... I mean seriously??? Like 2 raw shrimp head with nasty organs inside is not bad enough, and you are offering us more shrimp head?? Oh and she said maybe give us ice cream for free. Lady, you just served us RAW seafood that could cause diarrheal and easily upset our stomach. The dry tuna, salty mackerel are not even worth mentioning comparing to this nasty shrimp head. We left the store extremely angry, and now 4 out of 6 of us are having upset stomach. Let's also not forget we ordered fresh wasabi for $3, and it was never served.
