Beef Teriyaki Bento ($17) - salad and California Roll not pictured
    Courtney L.

Our experience here staggered between ups and downs. My family and I stopped by one night for a takeout dinner on our way home from hiking at Mount Rainier. Having only eaten snacks throughout the day, we were more than ready for sushi, teriyaki and yakisoba! With the current times, Kaihana is only serving curbside pickup and all orders must be placed over the phone. While they are taking great safety measures, this is where the first hiccup begins. We referred to the full menu on their website, but were directed to their Facebook page for a true account of what was actually available. The menu on Facebook didn't have any item descriptions though, so we had to constantly cross-reference it with the one on their website. Although minor, this ended up being more complex than it should have been. From the parking lot, we called in our order and were informed about a 20-30 minute wait. During this time, the continuous stream of customers dropping by to pick up their orders was a promising sign. Since we visited on a Thursday, our visit came with a perk! With any entree order, we received a teriyaki chicken kid's meal for FREE. This sounded almost too good to be true, and that unfortunately was the case. The kid's meal itself was a nice serving of chicken, rice and gyoza, but the quality fell below our expectations. Several slices of chicken were completely drowning in a thick teriyaki sauce that was also overly salty. It was like they just poured the sauce straight from a bottle. Most restaurants tend to marinate their meat and may drizzle a little sauce on top, but I have never seen the meat drenched in it. For my main entree, I had ordered the beef teriyaki bento ($17), which was equally disappointing in the same regard. The California Roll, fried gyoza and salad in my bento were all good, but nothing could save the beef. My family ordered chicken yakisoba, spicy California Roll and an albacore roll, which they enjoyed. The order of yakisoba was huge and we took the leftovers home for lunch the next day. Their rolls are also large and stuffed generously with fresh ingredients, making them the highlight of our meal. If I came here again, I'd probably stick to ordering only off of the sushi menu. They have a vast selection of specialty rolls, which is one indication that sushi is their strong suit. On a positive note, I do appreciate the safety measures and friendly service during our visit. The waitress who brought our orders to our car was wearing a mask, genuinely greeted us and was quite cheerful despite constantly running in and out of the restaurant to deliver to customers. However, in my honest opinion, our experience here was just okay and sadly did not match up to our favorite local Japanese restaurants. [3.25 stars]

Des Moines roll and hamachi nigiri. Some of the best hamachi I've had in recent memory.

Wow! I stopped here recently when I was early to pick up some friends from nearby Seatac Airport. I was looking for a quick in and out, and trying to satisfy a sushi craving. This place fired on all cylinders. What this restaurant lacks in character, it makes up for in truly delicious sushi. I had a Des Moines roll, hamachi nigiri, some miso soup, and a Japanese beer. It was an amazing meal, and I only wish I had had time to stay for more. My only gripe is that it was freezing cold in here. Somebody really needs to turn on the heat. Other than that, next time I'm craving Hamachi and I find myself anywhere south of the Seattle City Limits I will definitely be returning.

2/24 - grubhub but shouldn't be as they don't deliver.

This is a response to the negative response from the restaurant. I have eaten here a few times, this means I have ordered in person at the restaurant and took the food out. So your response of me making false accusations is false as this review contains multiple visits (and more in person visits then an online order attempt). it has been a hit and a miss in quality but is still good as long as they follow the order. I order crazy salmon and 50%of the time they don't remove the cucumbers as requested. The cucumbers were in 2 orders and the order was made in person (not an app). I wouldn't order using an app on Fridays. The menu they provide to the apps is wrong on that day (or so I am told) and I didn't get anything I wanted. (This means no food was delivered. To attempt to eat any food quality comments were not reflected in the single online order attempt where no food was provided) Why wouldn't they call prior to the driver coming in to advise if they got the order. Poor customer service and food quality from the restaurant with multiple opportunities. (As you mentioned you don't have an online order as this was found out after the phone call and in your responses to my comments. As to the food quality this stands based on the ability to follow requests of taking out cucumbers.) This feedback shows an opportunity with your restaurant from my point of view. From the lack of following a request of no cucumbers, to grubhub using your restaurant without permission and to the phone call that didn't provide that information clearly perhaps it was the phone or what was being conveyed. Now I am offended that your message back are putting the blame on me for not knowing you don't do online orders, please understand i did not know. How you handled it could be better (mainly from understanding the situation (as I feel that you don't) and conveying in a way that was more clear like now in some comments). However you advising false accusations is very strong in my opinion and leads me to think that you don't understand what happened completely. If you need more information then ask clearly. To assist - after several days later your restaurant still appears on Grubhub. In my opinion this should be removed to not have the incident that happened with me and receiving poor communication to a new or repeat customers that don't know that you don't use the app.

One Rainbow Roll and one Seahawk Roll to go.

Great place for sushi in Des Moines. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Open weekdays 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Maki Sushi Combo A at Kaihana SushiSaki.
    Mike M.

As a farewell lunch to my Director of Sales, my team decided to go to Kaihana SushiSaki for this celebration. I went with their Maki Sushi Combo A which came with 4 California rolls, 4 Ichiro rolls, & 4 spicy salmon rolls. Being presented with the dish, I was amazed with its composition. The way each sushi roll was crafted & placed on top of the plate, which was Japanese inspired, really brought out its aesthetics. However, apart from presentation, it was time to see how it tasted. Going for the California roll & spicy salmon first, I was a bit disappointed with how it tasted. It felt like I was eating sushi that you can find pre-made at grocery stores. Afterwards, I went for the Ichiro rolls which unlike the rest, was pretty good. However, I felt like there was something missing that could have made it amazing. This is due to the fact that while I was eating it, the momentum of flavor seemed really good until the end, leaving me with a disappointing finale. However, despite my disappointing finale, the owner came to our table to introduce herself as the new owner of this establishment & address all issues we had. In my perspective, I thought it was an admirable move the owner could have made & it may have just been that we came during the wrong time when they were trying to get everything situated with the switch. But with the owner taking the initiative that she did, I think this is a place that I would be willing to try again.

I've lived in Des Moines all 20 years of my life and decided to try this spot out here for the first time through Uber Eats! I was offered a free roll for the mishap of the driver and was delicious both times. oh & the restuarant is so warm & welcoming. pic (left) westcoast roll (right) volcano roll

I put in a simple order for my son & I. My son's pho & side of rice came out within 10-15 minutes. I waited for our spring rolls & my vermicelli bowl well after my son had started eating. I asked about my food just before 7pm to which I was told it was still being worked on. I paid my tab then asked a short time later that I'd like the remaining food to go. At 7:15pm I went up to the register to request a refund for the items I never received. I was asked if I had paid my bill (by the same young lady that took my payment). I handed her my receipt & she informed me that my food had been ready. It's unclear why, it was never brought out. I had told her that we had been waiting for an extended period of time to which she agreed. I pointed out that another two person table, that arrived after us, had been served their food before us. The young lady plainly told me that it was out of her control since there were new people in the back. No apology just an excuse. No one took responsibility for the disorganization in the back. I again requested a refund only to hear that she didn't know how to do a refund. I'm the end, I was given the cash for the two items minus the taxes. I've been to this establishment in the past & never have I experienced this type of situation. Hopefully, it was just a one off because they have excellent food. For now, I have no desire to return

The staff were friendly, though service was a bit inattentive; I found myself waiting longer than expected for basic things. Interestingly, when I ordered noodles and asked for chopsticks, they told me they didn't have any. It was quite a surprise to find an Asian restaurant serving noodles without chopsticks. As for the food, it was fine, but nothing memorable for the price. I've had better Asian food elsewhere in Seattle for less. If you're after a stylish, brunch-aesthetic spot to try Asian-inspired dishes, Di Fiora fits the bill. But if you're going purely for the flavors, you may leave underwhelmed.
