The fish was very fresh, but what stood out most were the details--the pickled ginger was balanced and refreshing, the fresh wasabi was excellent, and the rice was prepared perfectly. Pretty solid place new sushi restaurant in Van Nuys. We came here on a Friday night with my son around 6pm and we seated right away. Since it was a new place we didn't wanted to go over board ordering. So the three of us order our own sets and one roll to share. My son ordered the Hachi Sushi Set, it comes with 10pc sushi and salmon cut roll. It was solid and fresh. Fish to rice ratio was perfect. My wife ordered the 2 items Bento, Spicy Tuna Roll and Mix Tempura. She enjoyed it. I got the Premium Chirashi- Every fish was fresh and nicely cut except for the Uni. That wasn't fresh at all. It had a bad taste. Lemon Tail Roll- The roll was good. Service was fantastic and very friendly. Overall, Kaiyu Sushi is solid and I would definitely return. Until my next visit. read more

Ambiance here includes dimmed lights, very clean and organized. They hablve nice booths and tables to accommodate guests. Sushi bar also has seats and front view of the chefs cooking. The prices are reasonable here and the sushi is fresh. They currently have a promotion where you dine in and you buy one roll get the second half off. I really wanted to try the Wagyu asada so I ordered it. The slices are very rich like butter, in each bite. It can be overwhelming if you are not used to this. The guacamole was delicious and paired up well with the asada slices. The mini asparagus was cute and tasty as well. 5/5 I order another fresh roll: the rainbow roll You can taste the quality of the fish this roll has. They are: tuna, salmon, albacore, yellowtail and shrimp. Each bite was a mouthful for me. The presentation of this roll is beautiful. Each fish add its own pop of color. 5/5 The Lemon Tail roll was the last one: it included spicy tuna and shrimp tempura, yellow tail,and yellow tail ceviche in the middle. This was one had a touch of spicy to it, the sliced Jalapeños gave it a nice kick but hot! so be careful. 5/5 The classic thai iced tea 5/5! Came here twice. The first time I came here I loved how fresh the sushi and other ingredients were. I didn't like the shishito pepper sauce but still good either way. Definitely liked the roll up, had no rice. The second time I came here I got veggie gyoza and truly amazing. The sauce that came with it provided more flavor and sophistication to it. What had failed me, was the tonkatsu ramen. First the egg was super overcooked, no yolk whatsoever, and secondly the flavor. The broth was super bland like it had no seasoning. Unfortunately it tasted like I was drinking water with noodles. I tried to put some chili oil or paste but they don't have that. This newly opened sushi restaurant is a hidden gem in a non-descript stripmall. Inside is a lovely upscale-modern style restaurant with small booths, a few tables and a sushi bar. It was an adorable place for the impromptu date I had suggested. As of 4/29/26 they did not have a liquor license. So no sake or beer (yet). I won't knock any stars off for that. I ordered cucumber salad, edamame, and two rolls that were delicious. We also tried some crispy rice with spicy salmon and avocado. They have/offer gluten free options on request (tamari, cornstarch breading for the kaarage). I will definitely return to try more items off their extensive menu. Staff was friendly and accommodating. I hope they have a long and prosperous run in this location! This may become my favorite local restaurant. read more

I love their ultimate salmon roll which comes with fresh salmon inside and out topped with delicious chili crunch. Rolls are about $16 and the best part is they are buy one get one half off when you dine in. New place, is pretty good. I got the salmon belly sushi and katsu curry. Katsu curry is what I really came for. I love katsu curry, but I don't like the place that is closest to where I live and I also don't want to go to Sawtelle so I came here. The salmon sushi had rice that had a bad texture to it. So I wouldn't order it again. But the Katsu curry which is chicken by the way was great. Thank God the music wasn't too loud. Loud music is another reason why I don't like going to the place closest to me. It was a lot of Katy Perry and Taylor Swift when I visited. Not complaining, I actually like them. read more

I saw an Instagram ad pop up for this newly opened spot for lunch, and thought I would give it a shot, since I live so very close by. It's in a strip mall area, so there are a lot of parking spots, however finding one can be challenging at times, but don't let that deter you. Once getting inside, the ambiance is very nice and welcoming. The decor and music playing were very nice and not expected at all. Upon meeting our hostess Blair, she was extremely nice and made us feel at home, and very polite and checked on us throughout the meal. Loved her energy. A lot of their sauces are unique compared to other sushi places and the chilli garlic on some of the rolls added a great umami flavor. Portion in general is very generous as well. I was actually on my way to the Japanese restaurant in the plaza behind you, but when I saw your place on the map and was impressed by your photos, I decided to give you a shot instead. What a wonderful decision that was. Kaiyu is a mostly brand-new restaurant with a very comfortable and nicely-decorated interior. Paintings of feudal Japan adorn the walls of every booth. The menu is colorful and highly varied, but not so varied as to be unable to deliver the promise of quality. I ordered a 2-piece bento. And the first thing you may notice is the quality presentation of every food item. Whoever is in charge has gone the extra mile of providing varied serving dishes and decorations in the spirit of a Japanese kaiseki dinner. (Which is a traditional Japanese multi-course cuisine.) And for the most part the chefs actually adhere to classic kaiseki practices, such as serving sets of dishes in odd numbers which promotes asymmetry, vastly improving the appearance of what might otherwise be considered an ordinary meal. And we always eat with our eyes first, don't we? Bring your girlfriend here. Bring your parents here. Bring your grandma. They'll be happy. The Sushi chefs and waiter were warm, kind and very inviting. Even the garnish of micro-greens and onions were exquisite. In reluctant to make this post but I feel I must. This spot is a MUST go. The decor is amazing, the flatware is custom made, the service is perfect. The is was our first time coming as it is a newly opened place. The menu, the choices, the fish, the rolls, the sashimi all of it was fire. Blair was our server and she stole the show. Great with our kids, super clean, I just can't say enough. Will be back every time. This is their first restaurant I guess but it doesn't seem like it.
