Having lived in the area for about 20 years, I've seen sushi spots open and close across the SFV. Most places around here heavily cater to the fusion roll crowd, so I was skeptical when I first looked at Kaiyu Sushi, but I had to give this new spot a try. ​ Kaiyu Sushi is the real deal. This place offers great value for quality--I got what I paid for and better deal compared to so many places around here. ​I stuck exclusively to the nigiri and a couple of post-meal items this time: salmon belly, yellowtail belly, albacore belly, Spanish mackerel, octopus, baby scallop, halibut, snapper, raw shrimp, and toro (tuna belly), along with takoyaki and tamago. ​Every piece was fresh, well-prepared, and featured generous portions---at fair and generous prices. The bellies were particularly rich and satisfying. The mackerel had zero unpleasant fishy smell, with a chewy, fresh texture that showed it wasn't pre-aged or sitting around. ​The toro had great marbling, though the color was a bit off, and adding sesame oil to it was a bit offsetting because it masked the natural o-toro flavor. However, considering they don't charge an exorbitant price for it, I'll give it a pass. ​ We finished with the takoyaki and tamago egg sushi. The tamago hit that classic sweet, comforting note at the end--it had cracks, but the dessert-like flavor and texture. The deep yellow color indicated to me they used high quality eggs. ​It might not be an ultra-high-end omakase spot charging a fortune, but that was not the occasion. It felt like the cost savings from unnecessary decorations worked in my favor with higher quality. Just look at the pricing on the menu. I got solid, high-quality traditional nigiri served in generous portions without the pretension. If you're tired of over-fused rolls and want a reliable, legit sushi joint in the neighborhood at fair pricing, give this place a try. read more

Wanted to update my review since the last time I came. Continue to love the sushi, they still taste fresh and delicious. I did try the ramen again but this time it was the miso ramen. When I saw it I was thrown off by the color as I never had darker miso ramen, however, the taste was surprising. Earthy flavor and rich broth. Personally not used to having squash or mushrooms on it but still great taste. I am used to it having an egg and chasu but the flavor made me not have an issue with it. I love that the restaurant is getting more business but hate at the same time due to wait times. The staff are really welcoming and wholesome. Unfortunately oh oh sushi closed down the street from me and I needed a new spot that delivers. They don't have delivery but they are on Uber so I tried them out and was pleasantly surprised by their presentation. From their bag, to their box, to the rolls themselves. My eyes like to eat too you know? lol Everything was good. I was not a super fan of their rice texture so in the future I may not be ordering anything with rice in it. Dragon roll also is not with imitation crab which I preferred my sister did not as she doesn't eat raw fish. They do offer substitutes which is great (another plus!) I'm not a fan of sesame on my sushi for some reason. Jalapeños were breaded not tempura battered but they were still bomb. Overall well earned 5 stars. Hands down one of the best calamaris I've ever had. The batter was simple, super crispy, thin, it complimented the squid perfectly. Cucumber salad was also a hit. I want to try their fried tofu next time, and definitely the other menu items. The lemon roll was good but a little wet for me, I also didn't like the batter they used on the tempura as it was too thick- I would like it if it were closer to the calamari batter. The spider roll was great, however I didn't like the batter for the soft shell crab, it was too thick wish it was like the calamari batter. Ambience is beautiful, very Japanese and clean, organized. The service was fantastic, wish they would take away some dishes progressively throughout the dining experience. Staff is just overall very welcoming and cool. Absolutely Amazing! Traveled from Echo Park to just try this place from seeing it on IG. The service was fast and the staff very pleasant and attentive. The dishes we tried were wonderfully presented and the flavors were fresh and refreshing with this heat. I would definitely go Back. When we went in it was primarily empty since it was only 12 noon but we definitely brought in the energy. More people started coming. The ambiance and decor is very nice and clean. This place was amazing! Super glad we found it on our trip to LA. They only just opened a few months ago and I hope they stay open. The staff was very friendly, it was clean inside, the food came out timely and beautifully. Everything we ate was very good and fresh. Stopped by Kaiyu Sushi on my way to Valencia and had a great experience. The fish was very fresh, but what stood out most were the details--the pickled ginger was balanced and refreshing, the fresh wasabi was excellent, and the rice was prepared perfectly. Found Kaiyu on a whim to divert from 405 rush hour traffic and glad we did. Excellent sushi and atmosphere with helpful service. A unique roll that I hadn't had elsewhere was all fish with truffle ninja which was quite scrumptious. Loved the above average rainbow roll and partner enjoyed the bento. My wife discovered this gem on the way home on the Yelp! app. Kaiyu's ambiance transports you to Japan and makes you forget you are in Van Nuys! The service was amazing and attentive. Since it was a new place we didn't wanted to go over board ordering. So the three of us order our own sets and one roll to share. My son ordered the Hachi Sushi Set, it comes with 10pc sushi and salmon cut roll. It was solid and fresh. Fish to rice ratio was perfect. My wife ordered the 2 items Bento, Spicy Tuna Roll and Mix Tempura. She enjoyed it. I got the Premium Chirashi- Every fish was fresh and nicely cut except for the Uni. That wasn't fresh at all. Ambiance here includes dimmed lights, very clean and organized. They hablve nice booths and tables to accommodate guests. Sushi bar also has seats and front view of the chefs cooking. The prices are reasonable here and the sushi is fresh. They currently have a promotion where you dine in and you buy one roll get the second half off. I really wanted to try the Wagyu asada so I ordered it. The slices are very rich like butter, in each bite. It can be overwhelming if you are not used to this. The guacamole was delicious and paired up well with the asada slices. They are: tuna, salmon, albacore, yellowtail and shrimp. Each bite was a mouthful for me. The presentation of this roll is beautiful. Each fish add its own pop of color. 5/5 The Lemon Tail roll was the last one: it included spicy tuna and shrimp tempura, yellow tail,and yellow tail ceviche in the middle. This newly opened sushi restaurant is a hidden gem in a non-descript stripmall. Inside is a lovely upscale-modern style restaurant with small booths, a few tables and a sushi bar. It was an adorable place for the impromptu date I had suggested. As of 4/29/26 they did not have a liquor license. So no sake or beer (yet). I won't knock any stars off for that. I ordered cucumber salad, edamame, and two rolls that were delicious. We also tried some crispy rice with spicy salmon and avocado. They have/offer gluten free options on request (tamari, cornstarch breading for the kaarage). I will definitely return to try more items off their extensive menu. Staff was friendly and accommodating. I hope they have a long and prosperous run in this location! This may become my favorite local restaurant. read more

I love their ultimate salmon roll which comes with fresh salmon inside and out topped with delicious chili crunch. Rolls are about $16 and the best part is they are buy one get one half off when you dine in. They also have chef curated omakase sets if you want a variety of nigiri and of course cooked options as well. Beautiful fish with a side of hot miso soup sounds like the perfect meal to me. The sushi was really good, tasted fresh and would definitely come back here. We got the tempura for an appetizer. It was genuinely a cool oasis for us on a hot day. We had 2 meals and a dessert for $50 with tax and tip. Note that the parking lot entrance from Sepulveda Blvd is blocked by a fence. Use the entrance on Sherman Way. Parking was limited by the new fencing, but spots were still available. The restroom I used, while not touch-free, was clean, attractive and well furnished.
