Such good beer! I love going to little micro brew pubs and this never is a disappointment. The staff is always friendly and inviting, making you feel at home. The beers I really like are ambers, and this place delivers some great ones. Even if the IBU's read high, they have a great malt balance. My husband goes for the lighter side of taste, so he always gets the Hellas. Do give the dogs a try! They are oh so fab!!!!!! The pub is in a trailer park next to a KOA. Talk about out of the way! So much fun!! They also have live music and belly dancers. Just a 10 mintue drive from Albuquerque and you're having some great beer!! Enjoy! read more

Fun brewery off the beaten path. We stopped on our way to ride the Sandia Tramway. Very friendly staff and good service. Delicious food. I had the salad with sun-dried tomatoes and my husband had the bison frito chili pie. Both meals were very fresh and flavorful! I had the cider and it was very good. I tried a few of the other beers and really didn't care for them. I usually really like Amber and Wheat style beers, but these were just not for me. My husband had a stout and he said it was really good. Beer is always up to personal taste though! So I say it's worth a visit! read more

In town for a family reunion my brother who lives in Rio Rancho said we had to go here. Ordered a couple of flights and enjoyed all the beers and all ordered a pint of our favorite. All the staff were very friendly and we enjoyed our visit. We didn't order any food but when we came in several parties were eating the pizza which I have to say looked pretty good. Conveniently located next to our RV spot we were surprised at the selection of tap beers and they even had nomnoms! We had a pumpkin & goat cheese pizza that was really tasty but the 3 stars come because we needed a gluten free crust ( as advertised) & they were out. No bueno-- that only meant the gal in our group who needed GF drank more! No a bad trade off I suppose. Right by the KOA campground! We over ordered because there were so many items we wanted to try! Leftover pizza made a great lunch! The buffalo frito pie was really tasty! The Hawaiian pizza had a green chile kick and the pumpkin goat cheese red chile pizza was really good. We wanted to try a giant cinnamon sugar pretzel but we we too full. I rarely drink beer but enjoyed a pint of something the waitress suggested. Members of our party enjoyed the Octoberfest brew and a cider. The surroundings are very eclectic and honest had it not been recommended by a friend we may have turned back. Kaktus is growing on me and has found it's way into my daily life. HEADS UP music/yoga people, Kactus has a free music event every Thursday from 7-9pm during the summer at the Balloon Fiesta Park. They are also offering a ($5 donation) yoga class at 6pm with instructors from Yogazo. There has been different musicians and yoga instructors each week so you never know how much fun you are going to have. So far, so good and I keep coming back! And then there is Kaktus brews/wine/cider and food, usually a different selection of drinks and hotdogs with toppings, (duck, elk, beef, wild boar, etc.) chips and salsa. Its only July and I'm addicted, it's been a lot of fun so far and don't know what I'm gonna do for fun when the summer ends. read more

I'm not sure how I never put in my review of this gem. I had such a great time, many times, at this great little Brewery. I met Dana while I was in town for work, and they invited me to come to the Brewery for their first ever St Patrick's Day. I was in town for a week and stopped in 2 or 3 nights. Still think of the great people, the good beers and the food was just what I needed. Great mix of beers and the small batch sizes make the constantly changing line up even more interesting. I found it hard to pick a favorite beer, they were all too good. I live in Oregon and have had many a craft brew, but Dana and crew have got it down. I just need to try to get back down to NM and will definitely have Kaktus Brewing at the top of my list. read more

If you're on the road to Santa Fe from ABQ and looking for good chow, you found it. Don't judge a book by it's cover. Or so my wise Girlfriend said. This place is a house converted into a unique taproom/patio space. The beer is good, but the food is exceptionally good. They make it fresh in front of your eyes. The atmosphere was fun, the people were nice BUT... unfortunately the food was a bit lacking. My walking taco was soggy and lacking salt (and there wasn't any on the tables - and the waitress was very busy elsewhere). My sons bun was terribly hard (literally too hard to eat) and my wife's chips were stale. My daughter's salad wasn't much. My son's pizza was good though. I don't want to diss too hard, but I really was expecting great food based on the reviews. In retrospect, maybe it is the beer that people love. Upon arriving at this well-secluded little sanctuary, you immediately feel something different about Kaktus. A ten-minute drive from the Albuquerque city limits provides a place low-profile enough to be almost unheard of in-town, yet close enough to be oh so worth it. The building is compact, and has a very friendly atmosphere. The patio area has a massive TV, as well as a couch (big plus for those of us who like to get -really- comfortable to enjoy homebrew). This particular night, we took our beers inside to enjoy the live entertainment they had provided. The bellydancers who performed were dressed for the occasion (as were all the Kaktus servers), it being the week before Halloween, but they are there every Sunday night as a regular gig, I soon found out. The beer I ordered was the 'Gunslinger Smoke', if I recall correctly. I have a tendency toward darker beers (I love the taste of super dark chocolate, coffee, stouts etc) and the friendly server had suggested this one based on my preference. I fell in love immediately. I have tried many dark beers, but this one had a deep, earthy taste I was unfamiliar with. It reminded me of the smokey, almost "meaty" flavor you crave when you start using chewing tobacco. The hypnotising sensory flood the taste and smell of this brew created in combination with the festivities of the evening all made for a particularly surreal evening. Well done, Kaktus. Kaktus is a must-visit every year when we are in New Mexico. California natives and my family and I visit Rio Rancho every year. We be sure to stop into Kaktus at least once during our week-long vacation and this year twice. Dana and the rest of the staff are amazing- attentive, always willing to answer questions and converse. Our first visit this trip was on Wednesday right at 2pm when they opened. There were a few groups doing tastings and as I understand it, they were unusually busy right at opening than they ever are. Yet, with Dana being the only one at the time manning the bar, we still got efficient and excellent service! We got our drinks very quickly and food orders. We ordered a Frito Pie and a Meat Sampler. Really great and highly recommended food- and their beers I cannot speak highly enough of. Our second visit was on Thursday around 3pm. We ordered pretzels and bison nachos. This was truly an experience for a foodie like me- the best brewery food I have ever experienced and it really sets itself apart with original menu items. (Hint: order their curry ketchup with the pretzel- it also came with out meat sampler the day before- and is a staple condiment!). As far as beers, they change frequently depending on what they are brewing. They have a chalkboard up with their latest lineup and list the ABV and IBU. I tried the Helles, Prickly Pear, and Hard Cider this time around. Never a disappointment! My brother did a taster of all 8, though they also allow tastings of 1 or 4, or all 8. (My mom who was DD and doesn't drink fell in love with their Kombucha Tea!) Overall, 5 stars and a must for anyone- beer connoisseur or beer newbie! Driving NB up 25 I happened to notice a small Kaktus Brewing sign before the exit ...it was warm out, I was thirsty... well.. you get it. I REALLY enjoyed their beers and the off-the-beaten path, eclectic atmosphere. All of the waitstaff were friendly and attentive. We came here after balloon fiesta after seeing in the paper that "Kaktoberfest" would be happening. Beer, brats, and live music. Sounds good, right? But unfortunately, there was some kind of mix up and the brats weren't available for lunch and the bands were coming much later than advertised. We decided to stay for lunch and see what it had to offer. Prices ranged from about $6-8 for most dishes and there was a wide variety of game meats from boar, elk, duck, and buffalo. Not too crowded either and took about 10 minutes for the order to come out. I got the buffalo frito pie, my mom a pretzel, and my dad a boar hot dog and an Oktoberfest. It was a little bit of a disappointment that the frito pie came in a paper bowl and was lukewarm in the middle so much so that the cheese hadn't melted on top, but didn't want to wait for another one. I did not try the food but the beer was good. What makes this place great is how unusual it is in comparison with other breweries. Kaktus has a unique setting that creates a friendly atmosphere. We came to Albuquerque for the balloon fiesta and I am from Dallas so I did not know what to expect as we have A LOT of good breweries back home. I have to say pulling up we didn't know if were at the right place as it looked like someone's yard kinda tucked off behind some trees. But we pulled in and found a little gem that I am very super impressed. The girl that served us was awesome. And we got our drinks and food in a very timely manner. I was very pleased with the helles lager I order and thought it had a very smooth flavor and my girlfriend was very happy with the beer she got. I have to say what really did it for me was the duck sausage pizza. I was absolutely blown away by the flavor. I don't know if I will ever be back to this area again in my life but if you are from here or just passing through I would recommend this place 100 times over. read more

We stayed at the KOA attached to this brewery and spent one night there getting a bite. Off the wall place with great vibe and super food. I had the bison nachos with a flight of the beer. Nachos were of the hook good with fresh chips and great taste. My woman has hot dog bites and hard cider. Service was excellent. This place is a definite go to when passing through New Mexico. They even have cornhole out back but it was too cold to play. Keep up the good work. Oh yeh the beer flight was great, I only left the IPA because I am not a fan. Tulum in Bernillio!!! This place is like being in Tulum, Yucatan, and we love it!! The dark porters and stouts are what I look forward to; and the interesting sausages !!! We stumbled upon this because of a Yelp search after a great mountain bike ride at White Mesa. The beers are solid....not mind-blowing for hops fans like myself (their IPA is much more like a pale ale), but totally drinkable. Their stout and porter were great.
