This store is one of my favorite stores to stock up on Eastern European goodies. The store is clean and fully stocked with fresh items (I know expiration dates can be an issue at some of these stores). What sets them apart is their extensive beverage offering, their deli counter, freshly baked cakes (yay for Medovik) and their prepared items such as Olivier, chebureki, galuptsi (cabbage rolls) although they don't give you the sauce, and of course piroshki. The folks working there are courteous and helpful and will gladly suggest and explain the different meats. No tastings at the deli, unfortunately. Prices for regular goods are comparable to nearby stores but their prepared dishes tend to be a bit on the higher side. Other than that, this place is great and will likely have what your heart desires.

The good: I was excited to see that there was a Russian store not too far from me. This isn't the largest one I've been to but there aren't many in this city so this is as good as it gets! They have most of everything you might look for including deli meats, cheeses, pastries, cookies, candies, canned foods, alcohol and bread. I tried two of their medovik-type cakes, sour cherry juice and brown kefir from here. The kefir was nice and the flavor reminds me of sour cream. I thought the medovik would be made in house but I am not sure if they are shipped from somewhere else based on the packaging. One of them had a honeybee made of sugar on it while the other was lighter in color and may have been something else besides medovik. I liked the darker one better because it had more flavor. The sour cherry juice was almost $5 and came in a super pretty glass bottle I've never seen before. The bad: The lighter colored medovik-like cake was sweet and lacked a distinguishable flavor. The interesting: My husband told me that the store name is the national fruit symbol of Russia.

2/3/20 This is a great international market with selections from various countries. I came here for the ready made dishes like borscht, chicken patties, salads, and those delicious cakes. Make sure you try a slice of spartak or medovney cake, you won't regret it! So yummy!!

Was delighted to find this Russian store with great reviews and raves about their cakes. They did not have the honey cake but they did have a chocolate cake which was great. Also picked up some unique chocolate which was really good. They were staffed by some very friendly, helpful young ladies.

The owner let us know that they BBQ kabobs on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We came for an early dinner on a Friday night. We both ordered the kabob combination plate, which was around $23. It comes with a chicken kabob, a beef kabob, and a couple of bbq-ed tomatoes over rice. It was fun to sit outside and watch as our dinner was being cooked. The woman owner also came by, and brought us some sumac to add to our cooked meat, and also a couple of complimentary cookies. It was a really nice experience. Felt very much like I was at a family barbecue, sitting outside and watching the owner grill meat. This market has an interesting selection of Middle Eastern foodstuffs, and I would come back if I were going to pick up some meat for my own barbecues at home. I also saw they had sandwiches and other deli items during the week as well.

It seems like there are usually just a couple of people manning the store so they're often in different sections, but if they see that you're waiting at the checkout line or butcher section then they'll make their way over quickly. The store is small, clean, cozy, easy to navigate. Everything is in place and well-organized. So far all of the products I've bought from here (spices, veggies, meat) have been of good quality: nothing moldy, old, or containing bugs (this happened to me at some other stores). A final thing to add, since it was a holiday (4th of July), I made sure to call in beforehand to make sure that they are open. They answered promptly and politely, they let me know that they're open until 2 PM.

I will say though that I don't like how ginger and shallots are offered in bulk, so I go to Lucky's or Safeway for them but I usually take care of everything in one place. Oh, I like to get my ground meat from Lucky's or Safeway or Walmart because of the fat content. They had some teas where I had good experiences many years ago. Who knows what has happened in since then. The expiration dates ranged from a few months from today to two years in the future. Check the expiration dates before you purchase. To my ignorant eyes, I couldn't even guess at the identity of 98% of the items. I did recognize a few items which I've had before. They seem to be part of most Indian meals and they're quite delicious. Unfortunately, the carb count is so high that I can't really eat them anymore. The size of the store is big enough that there is an array of each product so you have great selection. I couldn't tell if the prices were high or low so I took a bunch of pictures and you can decide for yourself. The kitchen area seems super well stocked. I recognized a spice/coffee/peppermill. I actually purchased this. It was a total disaster. The brand was kinjal. It was completely unable to grind peppercorn. I tried grinding oregano . No dice. Since the item cannot be returned, I am stuck with recycling it. I recognize a press. I would have guessed it was a tortilla press, but I doubt that was it. I have just purchased a tortilla press. The only drawback was mine is bigger and more suited to what I want. I recognized the mortar and pestles.. They were made of heavy stone and I didn't recognize what it was made of. But the price is sure better than the marble mortar and pestle that I purchased 40 years ago. I saw something that looked like a wok. It was so large that there is no possible way for me to heat that thing. To me the only way to handle a wok that big would have to be a bonfire. Also, who the heck makes that much food. I think this is an implement that is most useful for a restaurant. There was an array of copper products. Pure copper. Hand hammered. The price was amazing, but I don't really need these items. I reluctantly passed them by. But the prices were astonishingly low for copper. Now copper has antimicrobial properties so I felt higher confidence in performance than rival products made of glass or stainless steel. If you let copper form the reddish brown patina, the patina is more durable and has higher antimicrobial activity than pure copper. This is the reason why copper pipes command such a high price and last longer than other materials. For now it's time for me to acquire an Indian cookbook so I can have a shot at recognizing at least some of the ingredients. Like many Asian stores cleanliness was certainly not the highest priority. The floor was faintly grubby, although the products didn't have any dust or dirt. But an enormous number of products had no expiration dates so who knows. But based on my experience with the teas I decided I would not pick up spices here. They do have a section with whole spices and powdered but Indian cooking seems to have shifted to pre-milled spice packets. I certainly appreciate this convenience. It also means I have a shot at recognizing the mix. I did not eat any of the prepared foods. Most of them looked carb high and oily. I have problems tolerating both so it was a hard pass for me. I ended up buying an assortment of kitchen implements which filled some of the holes in my collection. That's pretty impressive since my collection is extensive. Since my alternative source is Amazon the prices were reasonable. Service was snappy and I paid for my item in about in a few minutes. Since the equipment cannot be returned they were meticulous about inspecting items before allowing me to inspect it myself.

Where they could improve is the approach to selling expired products and also removing the expiry dates. When I showed them that multiple items were expired the cashier said they will be removing the expiry dates due to a California law. There is no law that says expiry dates need to be removed. There are sell by dates. But to say that expiry dates are not relevant is rather strange. Most Indians in the neighborhood are aware of this being the situation with the store and avoid it. If the manager can stop removing expiry dates and also keep only unexpired inventory more folks will start shopping there instead of other nearby Indian grocery stores.
