OMG, the piroshki's (sp)? here are worth the wait! They're the best I've ever had! Only one other place that used to be located on Bascom in S.J could even come close to how good the ones are here! I came there at 5 today and was expecting to find them there behind a display since I did see pics of it on here recently. I was told that it wouldn't be ready until 6. I came there at 5 and was starving, so I bought some borkeas instead which are really good. I think they're only .99 cents each. I got one meat one and one cheese one. They're flaky pastries filled with stuffing. I hardy had anything to eat that day, so I demolished those two items in the car while passing the time listening to the radio and playing with my phone, ugh! It was so good though! They were nice enough to warm them up for me when I asked them to warm them up. This place has a decent selection Eastern European food. There are a lot of different canned items, jams, cookies, chocolates, honey, cheeses, pickled fish, pickled salads, chicken cutlets, freshly made cheesecakes and desserts, meat, potato pancakes, and other stuff there. Anyways, I got a couple of potato piroshki's and a couple of meat ones. I had to wait an additional 15 minutes for it to come out. I got it hot and crispy! For those of you who don't know what a piroshki is, it's like a sugar free donut that['s deep fried. The stuffing usually consists of ground beef, potato's, or mushrooms. Sometimes it has fruit filling in it. They didn't have the apple one there today. I was told they usually make it in the evening, but not every day. It's best to call them and ask them when they'll be out that day or if any are even being made that day It only cost $2.49 each. I had one of those. I couldn't resist eating a whole fresh one to myself! I'm going to have to try to be 90% good with my diet for the rest of this week to make up for my indulgence! I'm so glad that I passed by this place and decided to check it out! Also, I'd like to thank the yelp reviewers who mentioned that they have them here! I'll definitely come back for more of these addictive treats soon! They're so good that I hid them from my husband. I did get him some cookies and some poppy seed cake, so I don't feel to bad about this! I'll need to go back there and get more for the both of us sometime soon. Moving from the Chicago area, I thought I could never find an Eastern European Deli any good in San Jose, I was wrong. Kalinka's exceeded my expectations. Great selection of fresh made Piroshki's, Cabbage Rolls, Sweet Cheese Pancakes and more. Lot's of good canned and dry goods as well, plus fresh deli meat, pickles and sauerkraut. I just stopped in here because Yelp listed them as a grocery and I was looking for some fresh produce. They had a small selection and I bought what I needed and was on my way. This store is small, with narrow aisles, but has a nice selection of Russian foods. The breads looked especially interesting but I was running late so I couldn't stay to browse. The young man behind the counter spoke both English and Russian and was very polite and professional. I would like to stop here again when I have more time to look around! read more

Well... it was our favorite Russian-food store for a while, but lately, the quality of products varies, and the quality of the customer service became just awful... For us, it's about 40 minutes' drive to Kalinka, and we don't go there very often, maybe once or twice a month, but every time we spend $150-200 there. Last weekend, we had a shopping trip again, and one of the purchases was a couple of "blue-eyed salted herrings".... when I opened the bag at home, I was shocked: the fish stank like corps and looked... the same, the photos show the condition... The person who packed it at the store wouldn't be able not to notice the condition and the smell. I called the store, and the solution they offered was to "bring the fish back for a refund or exchange"... seriously? another 40min each way with a stinky fish in my car? I asked if I can send them photos of the fish and our today's receipt copy - "Nope, you must bring it back"... Well, I threw the rotten fish away wrapped in 3 plastic bags, and I don't think I'll ever bring myself back to Kalinka. There are plenty of Russian-food stores in the Bay Area, that respect their customers. read more

Great store! They have a variety of fresh and dry goods, and they have great twaróg that reminds me of what I would get in Poland. They often have freshly baked bread, and a bunch of foods from central and Eastern Europe. I think the owners speak Russian, in addition to English, and they are so nice! If you have lots of heavy groceries, they give you a box and even offer to help carry it to your car. There are a few parking spaces reserved for Kalinka right in front, so you shouldn't have to carry it far. read more

We recently came to Kalinka in search of coffee from Greece that my dear love absolutely adores. Parking in the plaza that houses Kalinka is madness and we were both overjoyed to see two spots "reserved" with a sign right out in front of their doors. Luckily one of them was open so we pulled right in. Kalinka didn't have the coffee we were looking for, however they did have many a lot of different delicacies that you can't find in a regular grocery store. We found the prices to be on the higher side and nothing peaked our interest so much that we wanted to actually purchase something. It seemed like many of the products in the store had a small layer of dust on them, so I am not so sure of the freshness. My old review the good: Nice, clean, small russian grossery store in the hidden malls next to british pub and MMM store. you can find everything you need, seledkas are exceptional (from the 'bochka'). started to offer shashlyk orders. first in almaden area. the ugly: horrible home-made cakes, too much margarine and butter, if you care about what you put in your body temple, do not buy their pastries in the fridge section. they had a selection of samples, one of them accidently fall off the plate on the fridge when my kid tried picking it, so salesperson ate it immedeately and licked her fingers! i asked the owner what if they will take a bad product back and he said: "i am only responsible for what in the store and once it leaves the store, its no longer my responsibility" what ? i have two ways to evaluate russian businesses in states, one is "russian business' and the second one "the bussiness in russian way". this one would classify as the second one unfortunately for now, but i do understand they are still new and hope they will be able to recognize it ( it requires a huge mentality switch) and try to move to the first category read more

Walked by this place a few times. I knew it was Eastern European. They have chocolates, cookies, jams, wines and deli meats : from all over Eastern Europe. Products from Uzbekistan, Russia, Romania, Crimea and other places. I saw Romanian Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir wines under ten bucks. Picked up some tastey Russian Chocolates by Bgoxhobehue. Semi sweet dark chocolate, individually wrapped. I noticed some a variety of imported deli meats and piroshki's too! Customer service: very good. Parking: can be tight. read more

They have a huge array of amazing cheeses, beer (Baltika!), and some poultry. A great selection of pastries and cakes. They have a bakery in the back so when you come in the mornings there are freshly baked breads so delicious :) But I mainly come here for *drum roll* Pelemini!! It's pretty much a frozen dumpling with a variety of fillings (fresh cheese, chicken, pork, cherries, etc.). The price is always right for me and the store is extremely clean. Parking can be crazy depending on the hours you go. Everyone is pretty much all about scrambl'z on the weekends in the morning/brunch time. So be careful of that. read more

My family was recommended to Kalinka by our first-generation Russian friends. We have been twice now, mainly for the salmon caviar that our daughter loves, and way better than I expected Russian beer. It is inviting to leisurely browse for nothing in particular and the staff are quick to help answer questions. They even let my wife sample one of their caviars! We will likely be repeat customers for the foreseeable future. The prices are very reasonable compared to the also excellent Samovar in Mountain View so I'd recommend coming here first. The downsides are tiny aisles to maneuver in, and the location being near shake-a-fist kind of crazy shopping at Walmart and Costco. read more

A quick stop at this small Eastern European grocery/deli resulted in a purchase of what was possibly the best rye bread that I have ever eaten. Trust me, I'm old; I've eaten a lot of the stuff over the years, and this bread was insanely good: dense and spongy inside with a deep cracking crust, with a fragrance that's impossible to resist. The sausage and cured meat selection is varied and reasonably priced too. The two young gents and lady behind the counter are delightful. I love this place. You can pick up piroshka from their deli, then reheat them in the oven to keep them crispy. The potato piroshka are amazing. I came here with my mom and was amazed at this shop which I didn't even know existed. She and I went there specifically for the Cinderella cake which was delivered like only a couple hours ago. What I found was great meat selections from Europe, something you cannot find here. They had German sausages, Russian Bacon, and some stuff you would never find not even in Knob Hill. Even the Sauerkraut that are $6 in Knob Hill was only $3 here. When I waited outside because the shop got crowded and wanted people to be comfortable with social distancing, my mom came out but one of the store clerk carried it for her to the car. I'm enamored by this gem of a store. Even though I'm not Russian, always find a bevy of new things to try which have all turned out to be yummy. From imported wines, beers, jams, cookies, spices.. believe alot of their breads are baked daily local. I just picked up some trays of cookies baked local for xmas, and running off for more they are soooo good!! A deli counter full of yummies daily. A lot of packages have expired or no date. I visited this store only once spending there $130. Usually, I trust that stores removing expired products from their shelf's regularly. Not this one. We aware of this ! Their prices lower than Slavic's store, as I could judge, but I wont visit them anymore because of above problems. I've seen this place the many times that I've been to the Almaden Brit, La Vic, or Yogurtland and never paid it much attention. My sister and I went in on a whim a couple of weeks ago and were floored by all of the awesome groceries are packed into the fairly small store. We recently came back from a trip through Europe, where we went through a lot of Eastern Europe, and it was great seeing the same brands of beers, pastries, chocolates, etc. on the shelves. The prices aren't too bad, either. Got a pretty big bottle of Estonian beer for pretty cheap tonight. All in all, the selection is awesome, the prices are great, and the people working there are friendly. What more can one ask for? read more

Tiny little grocery store that carries fresh produce and imported goods. I didn't feel very comfortable walking around in the store because I felt like they kept following me around. I was in my work clothes too (business casual) so it wasn't like I looked like a teen or a hobo. They had a lot of items you would definitely not find in a mainstream market place. As a true European transplant, from the former USSR, I crave European goodies and Kalinka's has such a great variety of many of the foods I miss. They have tons of great jarred food; I highly recommend the Borscht and other soups in jars! The frozen items are also great, including the pelmeni and even British treats like sticky toffee pudding. Furthermore, check out the refrigerated section. My favorites include the patte and half sour pickles. They also have freshly made items like warm, out of the oven bread (mmmm....), peroshki, and salads. Recently, they've added a small produce section and Kalinka's has really become a one-stop shopping for me when I don't feel like making a Safeway or Trader Joe's run. Truly the best part of Kalinka's is the owners. They're incredibly friendly and helpful. Irene jokes with me and always asks me how I'm doing. She even remembers small details about me, like the time I was sick. She asked me two days later if I was feeling better. It's like having a second family. If you're a first timer to a European market, sample different things. You're not going to love everything, but it's worth it to try new foods.
