Finally got a chance to try this place after a few decades. Still remember when it was Dragon Inn. The place was packed late at night, which is always a good sign. Parking is available but limited in the lot in front. Better to look along Kingsway, or in the side streets behind the restaurant. I found it hilarious that the lot specifically prohibits parking for Tina Cake next door. Guess that must've been a problem over the years. The inside is plain and quite dated (old school). Looks like something out of the 1980s. Awesome. Staff are friendly and helpful. No complaints. Everything hit the spot in terms of authentic Cantonese. I had the stir fried beef with black pepper sauce, Hainan style chicken, and sweet and sour pork. Everything tasted great. Portion sizes are decent, and prices are quite reasonable. As the dishes are shared, it is best to come in groups (at least 3-4) so more dishes can be ordered. Looks like I've found my go-to for late night Cantonese food. Recommended. read more

This place has been decent in the past and consistently put out large portions of food at reasonable prices. I don't believe anything is outstanding, but always an overall enjoyable meal. Service is relatively friendly too. On a recent night, the most memorable dish had to be the Bean Sprouts w/ Salted Fish, which was full of umami and went well with a bowl of white rice. The Steamed Oysters w/ Garlic Sauce, Beef Chow Fun, and Seafood Chow Mein were all solid. However, the Dry Scallop Fish Maw Soup was bland, and the Goose Casserole w/ Taro was a major disappointment. Reminder to self, I originally wanted to order Tofu Skin in Dry Scallop Sauce, but was convinced otherwise. The recommended dish had snow pea leaves that were a bit tough, though the supreme broth and tofu skin that came with it were yummy. Next time, I want to try my initial selection. Found another spot, Kwan Luck Restaurant, for late night Chinese da lang. It's a few steps from Tina Cake Desserts. Late night has 148 options ($14.00-$23.00). They also serve clay pots ($35.00-$55.00). Several groups ordered the Chinese escargots and mutton hot pot. Very strange that we had to ask specifically for the late night menu. - Clams in black bean sauce (#4) ($17.00) - decent - Pea leaves with garlic sauce (#87) ($16.00) - excellent. Good portion - Pork chop with sweet gourmet sauce (#35) ($15.00) - Deep fried egg tofu with spicy chili salt (#103) ($16.00) - solid. We were looking for congee with small dishes for a late dinner & check out Kwan Luck Restaurant on Kingsway. It was our first time there. At 9.30pm, it was busy! The menu was extensive, they gave regular menu & a late night menu that has congee with smaller portion dishes to go with the plain congee or different meat congee. Staff were friendly & efficient, they were busy . Despite being busy, they take the time to check on you a couple of times, very attentive. Place is decent for a Chinese restaurant, don't expect a 5 star dining environment. However the place is clean, so is the bathroom. Wow, where do I start? This restaurant is quite small for a Chinese restaurant but they make the most of it. The staff were very friendly and they were extremely quick. I had a few days to think about my experience at this restaurant before deciding on writing a review. I felt that I needed to share with the community about how my husband and I felt and how we were treated during our re ent visit in June 2023. To say the least, it was heartbreaking to think that the poor treatment we received may have stemmed from being foreigners from the USA or/and our Hispanic background or/and that I am part of the LGBTQ+ community. We were asked to pay in cash and told cards were not permitted when they clearly had a card-payment processing machine. Our waitress added that she would only accept cash from us and if we paid in USD$, she would exchange to CAD$ 1:1. The exchange rate on June 17, 2023 (when we were in Canada) , per exchange-rates.org, was 1 USD$= 1.3027 CAD$. Our waitress kept talking over us in Mandarin to guests (larger parties) behind us while we were waiting to be seated. I couldn't help but decipher that she was assuring them that we were a "quick table" and that they would be seated next and fast. I understand some Mandarin. The woman was quick to take away the salted peanuts and tea when we told her we did not have USD$. She left us speechless and alone at our table implying we should leave and she would not continue to wait on us. So we left-hungry. and embarrassed. I genuinely wish this review was about their food- their online menu looked delicious which is why we had gone there in the first place. This was my fist restaurant experience in Canada as an adult and my husbands first visit ever to Canada/restaurant experience. We ended up eating at nearby KFC. We were so discouraged in visiting another local-type restaurant. We've always driven by Kwan Luck but never thought to try it out. Last night, my father-in-law brought my husband and me here for a quick weeknight dinner. The three of us ordered the daily soup, scrambled eggs and prawns, tung choy with beef and half a salt-baked chicken. Simple homey dishes that are fun to share. The food here reminds me of the simple home-cooked dishes that my grandmother would have made for us. While the dishes were a little pricey, they make it up with generous-sized portions. The daily soup was a pork bone, soybean and soy sheet soup. The soup was rich and flavourful with a hint of sweetness from the carrots. It was so good I had 4 bowls to myself! The salt-baked chicken was soft and tender, and the tung choy was done nicely with the leaves still being bright and green. My favourite dish of the night was definitely the scrambled eggs with prawns. The prawns were fresh and snappy, and the eggs were creamy and full of flavour. This place is now on my list of places to go when I am craving some homecooked food. read more

I live a few blocks away but finally made the visit here before 6pm on a weekday. Customer service is amazing; truly a strong point here. Price is a bit steep here compared to some other nearby Chinese restaurants. Portion sizes are a bit smaller (at least for the food we ordered as a combo), but still reasonable. The ratio of meats to veggies could be better in some dishes... We ordered a 三和菜, which costs $63. You get a soup of the day, 3 bowls of rice, 1/4 of a Hainan chicken, and dessert to top your meal off. Food came out at a reasonable time but before that, I really have to commend the staff. Our waitress came and told us that our dishes all had green peppers in them and asked if we wanted to switch one of the dishes to something else. She later came back and said, "ah, I wouldn't have told you but the chef wanted me to let you know, I wasn't thinking about that at all." That was honestly great of them! It didn't specify that on the menu, so that was awesome. All of the waitresses had great customer service and seemed genuinely nice. Now, the food... the beef with spinach (this was our replacement after being told about all dishes having green peppers) was typical, but not too salty; could be eaten without rice due to the already balanced flavours. The beef is prepared with corn starch, so it has a super soft texture. The squid dish was as expected with the black bean flavours. This dish was on the saltier side, which goes well with rice. The last dish was super sour and a bit overpowering. They used a pickled ginger so it is sour, like the type you have at sushi places. Pineapples were mixed in as well, so that acidity is sky high. It was okay for my dad though. The complimentary Hainan chicken was good, we didn't really have a ton of fat on it. There's also parking out front. The customer service alone was probably worth a high rating. The food was not the best but was slightly average to above average. Wan Luck is really famous in the Vietnamese society because of their goat hotpot which is 85% similar to what we have back home. Even the fermented tofu dipping sauce is the same. The broth is a bit sweet for me but overall 5 star for this. I also got fried rice to finish the meal and it never be a wrong choice. So when all is done, you can then scoop yourself some bowls of refreshing soup that's both delicious and nutritious. I like to eat my chicken with vermicelli and they provide soy sauce with peppers for you to dip your chicken in. It might sound simple but it really is super tasty. The disconnect between Yelp and the Vancouver Chinese community is jarring. Sure this place has 4.5 stars average (as of writing)... but only 14 reviews? This place is consistently packed. It's open til 4AM and serves Chinese food that goes great with beer - so it's uber-popular with chefs and general night-owls and miscreants. The food here is heavy with flavour and some older Chinese folks don't like it - but those-who-know... know. There a huge live seafood tank as well and beers are cheap - I particularly like their razor clams. It's not very English-friendly (most of the specials are on the wall menus which are in Chinese only) -- so go with a Chinese friend if you're unfamiliar. The food and service is excellent for really reasonable prices. At night, it gets pretty rowdy. I feel like I'm already giving away a huge secret here already, so I'll leave it at that. read more

It's a solid 3-star chinese restaurant, and somehow for me that turns it into a 4-star for me? Does that even make sense? This restaurant is a throwback to probably the 80's or 90's. Even the hong kong tv drama it shows on its TVs hark from that time period. Beer is still at $3.50 a bottle. Most dishes range in the $12-13 range, yet the portion size is generous. As soon as you enter, you're greeted to a seafood market sized fish tanks filled with all manner of crabs, clams, eels, etc. Definitely not for the squeamish. Prices are competitive with current market value, and cheaper than what you'd expect at most western supermarkets. You order the seafood dish, and they bring it out to you for your inspection. I love old school cantonese restaurants. Washroom was cleaner than I expected. Hot pot is popular here. Bring a good appetite. The combo meal we had for 5 people was enough to bring home leftovers. All in all, including tax and tip, it worked out to $15 per person. Some dishes are definitely better than others. You're getting traditional, authentic hong kong food in an ambience quite reminiscent of the old city for better or for worse. Keep your expectations minimal and you might be surprised. I phoned to ask if its ok for 2 people to dine in the lady said I will reserve a table for you and phone you back in 15minutes. Waited, no phone call. One of my husband's favourite place for traditional Cantonese food. They have a combo deal for # of dishes which comes with complimentary soup n chicken/tofu. Great taste and great service. I love coming here and now I'm giving away my secret hang out joint. I'm sure a few people have been here before and probably thinks it sucks. Ok let me ask you something... did you order off the menu or the specials written in Chinese on the wall? So convince a someone that can read Chinese to go with you to this joint and also be prepared to eat stuff like shrimp paste, intestines, and fermented bean curd cause that's their specialty. Stir fried intestines with chilies & tea leaves: a spicy mothersucker, but soooo good. You can order it any style you like or ask them for suggestions. The tea leaves are not edible, but to infuse flavour in the dish only. Steamed Scallops with vermicelli and garlic. 1 order is 2 halves of a scallop and served on the shells. Steamed with the vermicelli and a large spoon of garlic on top. Hope you don't don't have a date after cause... lol They also serve the parts of the scallop commonly not served, the roe and the membrane with the muscle. Potato leaf with shrimp paste. This dish is comprised of the top of the potato leaves and stir fried with shrimp paste. The tops have crunch stalks and almost taste like most other green leafy vegetable. Some people aren't too fond of shrimp paste, but if you do plan to get this ask for more shrimp paste!! Don't like don't buy! My fave thing here is the Fish & Tofu hotpot. Fried white fish and tofu with cilantro in a simmering hot pot. Sooooo goood!! This is just to name a few of the dishes I've tried here. The fondues are popular here, but I'm personally not a fan of the lamb one. If you don't know what to get, you can always ask the server for suggestions. I would ask the taller lady wearing glasses cause I think she's the owner and she only speak Chinese (Cantonese so far I've notice). The place is pretty runned down and pretty grungy and not a great place for a fancy meal. You don't find many of these late night haunts offering live seafood, spicy fried smelt, deep fried wings and other greasey beer accompaniments any more. This place is a legit Chinese restaurant. It is meant for local chinese who knows what they are ordering. My favorites are the razor clam, sea snails with black bean sauce, yam leaves and steamed fish. For people who have not tried, I recommend trying sea snails. It gets a little messy and a small technique needs to be developed quickly but once you had a few pieces, you will be highly incentivized to develop it quickly. On our table, all of us (except me) were new to this dish but towards the end, it was a war to get as many snails sucked out as possible. read more
