This is a bit of a late review. I visited back in March. It's hard to find good Chiu Chow food in Vancouver, so when I heard about this place, I had to give it a try. I made a reservation just in case, but to my surprise, it wasn't too busy. The restaurant isn't fancy, but for me, it's all about the taste. When I arrived, I spoke with the chef (I presumed) and asked for recommendations. He suggested a few of their most popular dishes. I especially loved the oyster pancake, blanched squid, and the taro dish with sweet-and-sour sauce. The service was very friendly too, which made the dinner more enjoyable. Ever since my mom passed two years ago, I've been on the hunt for dishes that remind me of my childhood. I recall frequenting a number of Chiu Chow restaurants as a child, salivating over large platters of marinated meats, indulging in delectable stir fries, and overeating the delicious fried taro dessert ubiquitous with the cuisine. For those who don't know, the Teochew or Chiu Chow people are a sub-ethnic group within the majority Han Chinese population, with their own distinct dialect and culture. The Lower Mainland used to have an abundance of restaurants specializing in this regional cuisine, including Park Lane and Tong Kung in Richmond, but all have closed shop over the last few years. I've been searching for something to fill that gap and I think Chuan Yue fits the bill. This unassuming hole in the wall covers most of the classics. Between the two of us, we tried the marinated goose, satay beef and gai lan pan fried noodles, oyster omelet, and oyster and minced pork soup rice. I'd say the goose isn't necessarily a must order - there's a lot more skin and bone than I'm used to and I'd probably go for the duck instead once they have that in stock. The oyster omelet was phenomenal though. With its crispy edges, chewy crust and an abundance of oysters, this dish was a real winner. We also really enjoyed the oyster rice soup dish. The broth was light and comforting, and the cilantro and marinated olive leaves throughout added a savoury touch. We were both stuffed to the brim and opted for no dessert, but lamented our decision as we saw their fried taro dessert headed for another table. The waitress was came back from the kitchen with a few pieces for us to try, knowing we wouldn't have room for a full order. We'll definitely be back for this as the sugar coating was perfectly crunchy and the taro expertly cooked. We spoke with the owner about how rare it is to find authentic Chiu Chow food in Vancouver anymore, and he was incredibly kind, telling us we could pop in anytime or request specific dishes if we so desired. He even gave me his business card, pointing out that he's the vice president of the Vancouver Teochew Association so he doesn't serve anything inauthentic. All in all, despite their dated interior, Chuan Yue is a great option for traditional Chiu Chow style dishes. I can't speak for their other offerings but I do think they're worth a visit if you're looking for something new. read more

We have been trying to look for a good chiu chow restaurant for a while. We stumbled across this one and decided to give it a try. As we walked in the interior didn't look very nice, kind a hole in the wall place. We sat down and looked through the extensive menu they had to offer. We decided to go with 1/4 of the marinated goose, the oyster egg omelette, chiu chow soup with rice, and satay beef and vegetable fried noodle. As we finished our meal, they brought out a few piece of their famous fried taro dessert. It was one of the best I've had. Seriously this location has changed hands so many times I've lost count . It's literally like a Chinese cuisine chameleon ! From a one-time HK-style cafe to classic Cantonese fare to Northern Chinese cuisine , you name it they were there at some point in time ! Now it's Chiuchow / Chaozhou's turn and to our surprise they did NOT disappoint . Just check out the pics , they look just as authentic as they taste . The food was fresh, hot and the best we've had. i can't say enough about the gem of Marpole;It was the best New Year's Eve dinner we've had in some time. I'm so glad we have this wonderful restaurant in our neighbourhood. Yes, it's not one of the upscale, fancy restaurants but I'd rather have good food than fancy tablecloths. The people who run the restaurant put their heart into the place. It's my new go to chinese restaurant for sure. Happy New Year! read more

The food was ok. We ordered three items. Took a while to come out despite us being the only ones there. Service was passing but both the chef and the wait staff watched YouTube videos on full volume while we ate. We ordered the deep friend crab meat balls, the cumin lamb stir fried noodles, and the fried oyster omelette. Not bad. Not great. Much of the taste was muted by the strong aroma of bleach I think they recently used on the floor. Probably won't return. Not sure how authentic this place is given that they serve Singaporean dishes here too. Parking was a hassle as they locked the back door (and it was raining). read more

I am an avid foodie and this place really blew my mind away! My dad wanted to come here for his birthday even though I offered to take the family to somewhere a bit more upscale, but he said he's adamant about coming here for their spicy and numbing crab. WOW! Everything we ordered was so delicious and authentic! Crispy pork intestines. Pork stomach soup, spicy chicken, stir fry, and their crab made me speechless! Service was also friendly AND THEY ALLOW YOU TO BRING YOUR OWN BOOZE!!! Will be back ASAP for sure :) read more

I feel kind of bad leaving a three-star review for a restaurant that we used to love, but honestly, fellow Yelpers have been so pivotal to our food experiences over time that I feel obligated to return the favour. I have been away for a few months and couldn't wait to get back to this restaurant, which used to have mind-blowingly amazing food. Sadly, last night's visit was markedly different from our previous ones. The fish congee was just OK (compared to "to die for" in the past). Although the ginger flavour was prominent, the congee was watery and had very little fish in it. Spring rolls were good enough but no better than what you can find at any other similar establishment. Salt and pepper squid was one of two excellent dishes, but to be noted, the pieces were quite uniform, and contained no tentacles, meaning that it was most likely frozen. Beef with ginger was superb! But the seafood chow mein and young zhou fried rice were distinctly (and very surprisingly) mediocre. Similar to the congee, the chow mein had very little seafood, very few vegetables, and almost no sauce, all on top of a heap of thin noodles. Inoffensive for sure, but in no way memorable and certainly not worth the price. Ditto for the young zhou fried rice - just meh. All the dishes came out at different times, and not in any logical sequence, and we never actually knew if any of our remaining dishes were forgotten until very close to the end of our meal when the fried rice arrived. Although the server was the same, the menu was different so I suspect the place is under different ownership or management (and with a different chef). Dinner for four was $100 including tip (we didn't order anything to drink except water). We live about half an hour away so we don't plan to make a special trip back as we can get 3-star food almost anywhere. I will check back on Yelp periodically so see what other peoples' experiences have been as it honestly makes me feel really bad to leave a review that is less than encouraging for a small business in these challenging times. read more

This is a restaurant that appears to be cut in half, the other now completely separate half is Taiwan cuisine. This side is a rustic Chinese cuisine mom and pop place. Menus are plastic covered sheets barely bound together and inconsistently spelled in unusual categories. The food is really plentiful and very tasty however you might need to ask for serving spoons on your dishes and North American sized plates over appetizer plates if those things are important. Debit or credit. I wasn't thrilled by having to self pack our saucey leftovers in leak-capable clamshell take home containers but it is how it is. read more

First table at the restaurant smell stinky service was the worse. Waited 20 mins for hot water n ask for more napkin got 2 pieces and waitress reply be environment spend $200 for this yucky food . Finally food came the Chiu chow soya tofu n pork intestines sauce is worse than lee Kam kiu home made not traditional chiu chow. Order couple other like sweet and sour pork the color is like whiteish not even orange worse than food court but expensive. Never coming back again read more

This is your friendly neighbourhood Chinese food joint. I typically order take out but they have a small, dated, family friendly dining area - just how I like it. The food is always a solid 4.5 and portions are decent. There's better quality out there but I'm not driving further than 1/2 a block for it. This is a top rated Marpole Chinese joint. read more

Highly recommended Chinese restaurant around Oak and Granville area (South Vancouver). We has a party of 22 pax for dinner on the weekend and requested that the owner cooked Singapore Chilli Crab. It took him a day to shop for 4 giant fresh Crab and even purchased the fried buns for dipping into the Chilli Crab sauce. As a Singaporen, I highly recommend this place if you are looking for Singapore Chilli Crab, Oyster omelette (Orluak) and sweet taro pudding (Ornee) for desert. read more

Not sure why the perfect 5 star reviews....but I'm guessing it's not based on what I ordered. Just had simple lunch with my mom. We arrived right when they opened at 11:30 am and the place was locked and devoid of activity.... We called their phone number and were told to head around the back of the restaurant. Kinda sounds like the start of something gone wrong, doesn't it? Nothing dramatic happened except none of the back doors were open so we headed around the front again and the front door was finally open. The cook let us in and served us tea. He was pleasant enough. When the real server arrived quite a bit later, we were not impressed with her service. But that's pretty typical. For lunch, we ordered Yung Chow fried rice and Singapore rice noodles. Prices were decent at less than $10 each. The portions were in line with a single lunch serving. As for the food, the fried rice was mushy, tasted like it was fried using 'fresh' rice (don't cringe cos it should be made with leftover or at least chilled rice to get individual grains) and no flavour. The Singapore rice noodles had no curry flavour at all. And tiny random pieces of pork not BBQ pork. Again, I have had way better rice noodles elsewhere (Copa Cafe surprisingly on the right day, makes a mean Singapore rice noodle!) Clean place though. Perhaps all the 5 star reviews were from any of the other dishes on the menu? Just my luck! read more

Hot and fresh takeout, very friendly customer service. Prices are great especially considering the quality of the ingredients (e.g. plump shrimp, vibrant produce) and the taste of the food. Really terrible food. We ordered delivery, and so unfortunately we were stuck with it. Expensive too, 6 dishes was $100. Order arrived incorrect. The rice dishes were seriously weird, like contained wild rice? Maybe it's because it's not what we ordered, but if didn't taste good anyways. Anything fried was over battered and under fried, just soggy fat bits in uncooked batter in bland gloopy sauce. No colour in anything, just a beige plate of stuff. The Sweet & Sour Pork was neither sweet or sour and tasted like moth balls. How? What could they have even used to make pork taste like moth balls? It was so bad we called to let them know, and while the lady on the phone was polite and sorry, her excuse was their usual chef wasn't on that night. Whoever was on needs to be blacklisted, because there is no way we could ever try this place again. read more
