I really like this place. It's a local spot tucked away in the corner, so you might miss it. But it's worth seeking out. The lunch menu during the weekdays are unbeatable. You can order three entrees for only $5! My favorites are the stew chicken and jerk chicken. For the sides, you get to choose between mac and cheese or salad. The meat falls right off the bone and is cooked well. I would have preferred a little bit more flavor in the meat personally as I feel like theres more flavor in the sauce that is paired with it, but it is still a go to spot whenever I'm the area. This place is very popular for Jamaican food. I ordered two meals, and each takeout container was loaded. Prices are very reasonable and service is great. Food is well worth trying. Curry chicken- if your into sauce, then this is the entree for you. Chicken was tender and comes with a side of coleslaw and rice/beans. I would've like a little bit more curry flavor though. Jerk- again another entree with a lot of sauce. For me I enjoy a dry rub jerk chicken. So this was my least favorite meal, but it was still ok. So we ordered their two main dishes the (large) Jerk Chicken and the (small) Curry Chicken. Upon picking up the food, the diner was pretty dark and seemed closed at first. The dining room itself is kind of small and dingy. However, the service was nice and the prices weren't bad. So I took my food and was on my way. The food was phenomenal. The portions were very generous. Meat just fell from the bones in both dishes. The Jerk Chicken was spicy with a strong sweet accent. And the Curry Chicken was super yummy. It was so good that my boyfriend and I finished it all in one night! I wish access to the menu was available. Pretty large portion and solid fill you up food, but not "soulfull" enough for us! We tried the ox tail large dinner, the large curry chicken dinner and we tried the beef pattys which were my favorite item overall and to me the most flavorful. They close at 6pm on the day we visited (Thursday) and I have to point out that the walls and front seating area was pretty filthy. Jerk chicken, curry chicken and something else, I forget. The jerk is my absolute favorite from them, although I'm not a dark meat fan, they don't sell breast meat here. I've learned to enjoy it hahahaha. There's a fair amount of white meat in the thigh so I'll be okay. I don't eat skin off of poultry, so I take the meat from inside and soak up the sauce off of the skin. It's so good. I love to eat the sides together. Okay wait for it ... Juicy, sweet delicious plantains mmmmmmmm, yummy and deliciousness that savors on my palate long after it's gone intensifying my craving for more. There is a rice and beans combo topped with uncooked cabbage, carrots and thinly sliced cucumber OMG! The flavors together collide in my mouth and form together as one of the greatest tastes I will ever adventure with. The curry chicken is okay. I need more flavor from that. It's not spicy at all and doesn't have too much to offer in terms of flavor for my tastes buds. It's not nasty at all it just doesn't represent much to brag about. In other meals not on he lunch menu. The red snapper is very delicious only one draw back ... It has a boat load of bones. It's good though. I ordered it a few times. I appreciate the flavor, you need time to eat it too because you have to pick through the bones. Don't be surprised either by the fish starring back at you. The head and eyes come attached. It doesn't bother me but if it bothers you they can cut the head off for you. I've had the stew chicken a few times. It could use more seasoning as well in my opinion it's good but I like a blast of flavor from my food. You may wonder why four out of five stars if I feel they lack flavoring, well because I like the food. Especially the jerk chicken and sides. They get five stars. I like the customer service as well. I tried this place for the first time last month. They have a jerk chicken lunch special that consists of 2 chicken legs, rice and a cabbage mixture and it is delicious! The sauce is the absolute best I have tasted. They take pride in the food and enjoy seeing a reaction out of people when they eat. This is my favourite Jamaican place in town, and one of the best Jamaican places I have tried in the whole country. The patty is very good, the amazing fruit drinks from the fridge are remarkably awesome. The Curry Chicken is good, but probably not as good as the spicier one from Dr Bird's across the street, and probably the one on Utica St. at the Soul Food place too. But their Jerk Chicken is the piece-de-resistance. It is fall-off-the-bone-delicious, it is very cheap, $7 for a small which is actually large... it is beyond amazing. The sauce is so hot and fiery that it will rock your world, but they'll give that to you on the side if you want. They really know how to do on-the-bone chicken. It's become a favourite place of mine despite the fact that I only recently discovered it. I am a massive fan of Kalypso and would recommend that everyone and their mother and their mother's friends and extended family try it. And as for all the delicious drinks in their fridge, the Pineapple Guava is the really incredible one that you should go for. But all of them are very good. Don't go by how the place looks. It serves decent food. I ordered the jerk chicken entree (small) to-go and it was $8. I was a little disappointed after tasting the curry/ sauce/ gravy in which the chicken was in. It was a little too sweet and not jerk chicken type (i have had the same dish in Jamaica so that's my reference). Anyhow the chicken was actually very nicely done. It was probably grilled first then cooked in that gravy thing. It was served with rice and beans and everything together tasted fine. It was a ton a food accompanied with some salad. They forgot my fried plantain though :( I wish I had asked them to just give me the grilled chicken on rice. Would have been more delicious that way. The place is small but clean. I'll be honest, upon entering the place it does look a bit shady and unappealing but just try their food and you will surely be back for some more. It is better off to get a take away and the food stays fresh for quiet a long time. Here's what we've tried and recommend: Jerk Chicken- Firstly, the portion size is humongous for the price which is a big thumbs up from us. Secondly, THAT CHICKEN is so extremely tender that the meat just falls off the bone when you pick it up. Never had such tender chicken anywhere else. The jerk sauce is sweet n spicy which is absolutely lip smacking. Comes with a side of rice, beans and fried plantains. The whole dish is pretty much good enough for 2 people. Curry chicken- The curry has a strong coconut flavor so if you're not into that then don't get this. Won't say that this is as exceptional as the jerk chicken but not bad at all. read more

Since last I reviewed Kalypso, this place has only gotten better and better as it has settled into its groove. Atmosphere-wise, the television now works, often showing Jamaica-themed movies like Cool Runnings or Bob Marley videos. Art on the walls provide a delightfully homey feel. If you're not too hurried and hence ordering takeout, you will find yourself delighted by their nearly astonishingly incongruent white china plates and glass goblets. What?! Despite the good press they have received, despite seeming to have acquired a solid client base, the food quality hasn't diminished whatsoever. If anything, it has gone up. Their chunks of chicken and goat in their curries, served on the bone of course, are as tender as you will find anywhere. Their patties pack a punch, ounce for ounce as spicy and finely flavored as anything else on their menu. But do let me relate to you an anecdote by which I may provide the greatest compliment to them. I recently visited here with an insanely picky eater and his girlfriend. This individual doesn't eat ethnic food, doesn't eat many meats, somehow abstains from fruits and vegetables. After rejecting menus here and there, we visited Kalypso by fiat. He dejectedly ordered the chicken wings. On his first bite, his eyes lit up. Life-long Buffalonian, this dude proudly proclaimed them the best wings he had ever eaten. I'd be happy to double that claim. Kalypso knows how to cook chicken on the bone perfectly. And the punch of their jerk sauce to a perfectly cooked chicken wing is more than I would have ever asked for. If you haven't visited yet, I encourage you to hop on over as soon as you can. This was my first time eating Jamaican since vacationing in Negril last winter. I really wanted to like this place, but alas it wasn't meant to be. I ordered the shrimp curry and my fiancé got the goat curry. We also ordered 2 spicy beef patties (one with cheese for 50 cents extra) and a side order of plantains (which we never received). The saturated yellow color of the shrimp curry was unappealing and the taste was off somehow. Even the plantains were a major disappointment. They weren't very sweet at all and were very dry. Definitely the only time I've had plantains and not loved them. They forgot our side order, and to be honest I didn't even care. I'll omit the details, but suffice it to say that my fiancé had no better luck with the goat curry. Neither of us came close to finishing our meals and we resorted to eating last night's leftovers to fill us up. Let me start off by saying, I was not just raised by my parents, but also by an old school Jamaican woman by the name of Tenci that will always have a part of my heart. She was an amazing woman with a heart of gold that loved me as her own. That being said, Tenci made her specialty oxtail, goat, chicken feet, and jerk chicken a regular part of my diet. Thinking back on this I am quite amused about all the different foods I was raised on from Greek to Jamaican, to Italian, to Japanese, to Turkish, to happy, happy greens. Nonetheless, I digress. Yes, all of Kalypso's meats are fall off the bone tender, but after three tries, the flavors just don't hit me. I have tried the jerk chicken of course, the oxtail, and the curry goat. Each time I wanted to love it, as I was looking for a little taste from my childhood, but alas, nothing. The plantains are OK, but really, truly, the flavors are just not there. However, if this is your first time having Jamaican food, it is a good introduction. The food here is more Americanized, and isn't nearly as spicy, or boldly flavored as authentic, old school Jamaican cooking. I guess I was just expecting too much. Overall, Kalypso is well priced, the service is nice - as everyone is quite friendly, and the food is well cooked. I'm going with the Oxtail plate and a Jamaican Pineapple Soda. First of all the small portion was the perfect amount of food. The meat is perfectly cooked and tender in an amazing sauce. I love everything about Jamaican Food, the spices and tenderness of the meats that just melt in your mouth keeps me coming back for more. Kalypso is located on Winspear Ave right near the corner of Main Street in the University District for UB South. The 7/11 convenience store is across the street. The restaurant is very small with a walk up window to order and pay. There is very minimum lighting so the place is pretty dark once you enter from the street. I usually have to let my eyes adjust for a minute or two. The first time I ordered take out I got the combo meal with Jerk Chicken and Oxtails. This came with a large portion of Jerk chicken that was nicely sauced and had a spicy sweet flavoring that was very tasty. The chicken was very tender and had a texture of rotisserie style chicken. The oxtails in my opinion were the star as it was so incredibly tender it literally fell of the bone. The meat was so tender and the flavor was so delicious I wished I had just order Oxtails so I didn't have to share my stomach space. To top off this meal was a large portion size of rice and beans that may have felt a tad mushy, plantains and a very fresh coleslaw mix. We're going to preface this by saying that Kalypso is the bee's knees. We are not Caribbean food connoisseurs yet but that will be definitely be changing. We experienced some of the best flavored foods of our life here and can't wait to come back for seconds. Setting: Kalypso is a no-frills restaurant that appears to focus more on take-out than dine-in. Not a problem for us but I wouldn't plan on hosting your next birthday party here. We knew we were in for a treat the minute we walked in the front door and got hit in the face with the aroma bellowing from the kitchen. The interior wasn't grandiose, we made ourselves comfortable under a picture of Bob and a faux palm tree. Menu: The menu was solid. It featured Caribbean appetizers, salads, and entrees including jerk chicken/pork, oxtail, goat, fish stew, and coconut milk based shrimp curry. It was a tough decision so we followed the recommendations and ordered both a small jerk pork entree and a small coconut shrimp curry entree. Both entrees came with a fried plantain, Kalypso coleslaw, rice with beans, and the protein source. Food: The food arrived in two styrofoam containers that were so full they were bursting at the seams with their contents. The servers plastic tray was nearly bowing from the weight of our two "small" meals. Very nice. The unique fragrances from each meal hit us in the face a second time when we opened the styrofoam boxes to reveal the contents. We got warmed up with the coleslaw and moved on to a perfectly fried plantain before gorging ourselves on the main part of the meal. The jerk pork was as tender as it was succulent. It also managed to stay interesting without ever getting too rich. It was seasoned well and had a pretty good kick. The shrimp curry was just as good, attributing most of it's claim-to-fame to the delicious coconut based sauce and mouthwatering shrimp. Overall: Kalypso is incredibly impressive. The food is great and the restaurant is unpretentious. It's exactly what we look for when going out. They would get a perfect score if they offered non-disposable tableware for dine-in experiences. My girlfriend and I just got our food an hour ago and ate it all. This place has amazing food and service! The woman who took our order was so nice and we got our to go order in under 10 minutes. We both got the jerk chicken meals and they're very reasonably priced for all the food it comes with, and the chicken is so well seasoned, juicy, and tender, we couldn't even pick it up without the bones falling out. I have always gotten the jerk chicken lunch special. It comes with rice, the jerk chicken and a plantain. The jerk chicken was spicy and flavorful, that flavor carried over to the rice. I have only even gotten that so I cannot speak to the other food on the menu but if it's anything like the jerk then I'm sure you will not be disappointed!
