I visited the Kamayan popup at Sweet Auburn BBQ tonight. I arrived sometime between 7:30 and 8:00 and found a seat at the bar. I was lucky to find that seat because it was crowded. I learned that there had been a line at 5:30. I guess I'm one of the few Atlantans that still work a long day. Anyhow, by the time I got there the Kalbi was sold out. The Kalbi is the special protein. No one came for the chicken and pulled pork. GOH!!! I was told that they would substitute the Kalbi with pork belly so I said yes to that. Instead of pork belly I got pulled pork. I also got terribly undercooked soba noodles. But by this time it was after 8 and I wanted to eat. The noodles quidkly got cold so I think they were sitting under a lamp for a while. My Hsu Christmas cocktail was fine; it tasted like fruit punch. I was surprised because traditional tiki drinks are usually not very sweet. Service was not good. I'm guessing the earlier rush wore them out because the staff was not about it. They were not rude but I think that if I had complained about that messed up plate they'd have given me dog food on the replacement tray. And not the good dog food from Whole Foods either. Overall, this was not a good experience so I'm going to have to give Kamayan a resounding Thumbs Down. I feel like they catfished me on Instagram and I'm bitter. read more

We were running late for our dinner reservation due to problems with our rental car at the airport. But luckily when we got there the chef and the staff was nice enough to still take us. Wow this place is a whole vibe friends! First recommendation is to make a reservation because it gets pretty busy and if you don't have a reservation you might end up waiting 45 minutes to sit. Once you make it inside though....first of all every server, host, cook, every person came over to check on us and see if we liked the food or needed anything at all. We were taken care of like family for real. So not only is the service fantastic but the food is soooooooo good....like drool face emoji good. Everything that we got was amazing. First we got some cantaloupe, melon juice which was so crisp and resfreshing. For food we started with chicken skewers and veggie lumpia which were both so delicious. Sorry but we were hungry and they were so good that they were all gone before I could grab a picture for you. Then we ordered the chicken adobo and the pansit palabok noodles. Everything was delicious! These plates are easy to share family style so I would suggest doing that so you try multiple things. We were lucky that they did a pop up during this weekend while we were in town. It was definitely packed and very busy. We wait an hour and 15 minutes to order and get our food, but I would say it's worth it. First time trying Filipino food and we absolutely love everything we ordered. The halo halo is what they're famous for and honestly I didn't think I would like it because it looks and sound similar to the Vietnamese Three Color Dessert, but it was definitely not the case. It's so much more flavorful of ube, pandan, and other toppings mixed in together. It's refreshing which perfect for the hot summer weather and just overall so pretty the way they presented it. I really enjoyed the dessert. If you ever get a chance to stop by here, get the halo halo dessert and the ube flan cake was good also. Overall, The food was delicious. Even more satisfying is seeing it get the recognition it deserves during Atlanta's '23 Michelin Star assessment. The food is amazing. I've been to a few Kamayan ATL pop-ups now, although I wish I had been going from the beginning! I've never experienced Filipino food quite like this, and my exposure to Kamayan style has been limited until now. So I'm very thankful for Kamayan ATL. I've been to three very different experiences at Ba Bellies: one solo Kamayan communal style, one Kamayan prix fixe dining menu, and one collaboration with Kamayan and two other local chefs. My favorite has definitely been the communal dining style, although I always love tasting the different influences when collaborating with other chefs. I LOVE Mia's ube flan cake and ube donuts, and wish I could just have those on a daily basis. I have yet to try the sisig tacos everyone keeps raving about that she serves at the Minero popup at Ponce City Kitchen - and I'm so ready to give that a try. My hugest complaint that is starting to give me trouble supporting the local Kamayan fad is the prices that just keep skyrocketing. My first event was $40 and I thought it was a little pricey since it didn't include alcohol (provided by Ba Bellies to order at the bar). Recently, the Kamayan style dinners have gone up to at least $65+ and that is just not in my budget. I would have loved to have gone to the Lazy Betty collaboration but $125 is a bit steep for me, too. Overall, I love the culture that Kamayan ATL has brought to Atlanta but the sudden increase in prices has definitely made me hesitant to go again. read more

What a feast! First time trying Filipino food and now I'm mad it's taken me so long! An incredible mix of Spanish and southeast Asian flavors. We had the Lechon Kawali (crispy pork belly) , spring rolls, BBQ pork and chicken skewers, palabok (rice noodles), wok fried green beans and Bikol express (a spicy pork shoulder stew in coconut broth). Finished the meal with ube flan cake, mango cake and halo-halo (an incredible crushed ice coconut milk dessert). Seriously, everything was amazing but our favorites were the BBQ skewers, pork stew and ube flan cake. It's a beautiful restaurant tucked in the corner of Asian Square. Email for reservations. The service is friendly but not attentive- you order at the counter, the food is brought to you but you need to be proactive if you need something since there are no waiters. My brother and I used to live in the Philippines so when we saw a promotion for this pop up food event we were excited to check it out and enjoy authentic cuisine. We arrived early and had drinks and appetizers at Lazy Betty which was the host restaurant for the event. I will review Lazy Betty separately. Lazy Betty loaned their open terrace for the pop up. It lacks sufficient shade and they don't utilize it on hot days. The few seats with limited shade were quickly claimed and our group of four had to take turns standing in the shade near an alcove and trash bin. We had no place to sit other than a small ledge for landscaping which was very hot and uncomfortable. It's kind of Lazy Betty to Liam their terrace but it was not ideal and detracted from our overall enjoyment of the event. A printed menu with limited items was presented to patrons and we were able to pay with credit card on their iPad with the Square app. My group of four ordered all of the menu items plus the canned alcoholic drinks. Food was very slow to arrive and arrived in random order. All of the food was amazing! The corn on the cob coated in mayonnaise with chili lime sauce was delicious!! Prices were fair for the high quality and freshness. The valet parking and difficulty of self parking plus the limited seating space and lack of shade detracted from the overall experience. TLDR: John is great, the food isn't, and the rest of the staff was awful. Maybe you'll have a better experience if you book before their last seating at 8:30. Ordering is done through an app: I hate that, others may not. Bring cash for your server to make sure they get to see their tip. The first thing I want to say is that our server was the only good thing about our experience there. I would have loved the opportunity to interact with him even more, but we had to place our orders through a website on our phones. I could go on for days about how truly awful that is to be at a not inexpensive restaurant and be forced to stare at a phone for the first 10-15 minutes of ordering. It also sets you up to have to enter a tip before you've experienced any part of the service. In our case, even though the tips were pooled, the only person who was attentive to us was our server, John. The other servers/staff actually negatively impacted our experience. And the FOOD IS UNREMARKABLE AT BEST: all 3 types of lumpia we tried were greasy and otherwise indistinguishable from each other, the prawns were overcooked and somehow tasteless despite being covered in sauce. The green beans and the pork belly tacos were very good, but not worth the trip on their own. It felt very strange to watch John, a Black man, maintaining his own section and helping out with others' sections while the entire rest of the non-Black staff congregated behind the counter talking and being on their phones. When they did venture into John's section to "help," it was counterproductive and only to attempt to rush our meal along. When I asked one guy for extra napkins on my way back to the table from the restroom, he couldn't be bothered to hand me some; instead, he pointed behind me and told me to grab them myself. Twice other servers came by our table: the first (napkin guy) to tell us within 10 min of us sitting down that it was the last call on the kitchen and ask if we put in our orders yet. He was rushing us to order even though we hadn't even had a chance to ask any questions. He got those answered for us, but it was clear that everyone was in a rush to get the restaurant closed for the night. We were part of the last seating, but it was still full of people. The other server was the one who angered me. We had finished the water from our bottle and a woman came over and took it away. Some of the food was spicy and some of it was greasy AND salty to boot. I waited a long time for her to return with a full water bottle and IT NEVER HAPPENED. I watched her walk a half-empty one back to the counter and thought maybe she'd refill that one and bring it to us. She didn't. I had to go to the counter and watch no fewer than 6 employees laughing and talking and wait for one of them to notice I was there. I ended up asking the woman who took our bottle to begin with for more water. Two of the three of us in my dining party (including myself) used to be servers in various types of restaurants: fine dining, super casual, and everything in between. Everything about this place really sucked except for our server John. We tipped John in cash and are in the process of trying to get our orders adjusted so no one else benefits from sabotaging his service. read more

I have been a fan of Filipino food since I was a kid and my sister's friend made pancit. I had heard good things about this restaurant and wanted to check it out. I really enjoyed the wide array of vegetables (broccoli, asparagus, carrots, green onion, etc.) and the multiple protein sources (tofu, chicken, sausage) in the pancit, but felt mine was more flavorful made at home. The portion size is good. The rice is too sticky for my taste, but they bring a large pot for sharing and the family style presentation gives a communal feel. The bbq chicken was really delicious and the pork was crispy. The rest of the food (eggrolls, chicken skins, hibiscus juice) was pretty good until someone in our party ate a piece of the fried pork that had a hair cooked into it. The restaurant didn't comp the plate, but gave us 4 free mini muffins, which were moist and had a great grape flavor. Not sure that was an adequate substitute. The service was a bit lacking here, we never got sauce my son asked for and had to get our own napkins and chopsticks from a cart nearby. I'm not a big fan of plastic cups and cans of soda in a restaurant. We recently ate at another Filipino restaurant that we thought was better, so we probably won't go back to Kamayan. P.S. Be careful walking to the bathroom. The floor felt really slippery in the tennis shoes I was wearing. read more

There was no sauce that came with the bbq chicken and rice that I ordered so it was kinda dry but flavorful. The ube flan dessert was delicious! Few concerns, please read the 1 and 2 star review as well for this place. I am the 3rd person in the past 6 months who is writing a review about getting ill after eating in Kamayan ATL. I don't write reviews, in fact I hate writing reviews but if it concerns my health and other people this has to be addressed. THEY HAVE EIGHT (8) HEALTH CODE VIOLATIONS! I cannot make this up. 1. Their health score is 77 - this means SEVERAL HIGH RISK VIOLATIONS. scroll down in their YELP bio and you will see the health department score. I don't think they are posting the current score in their restaurant. Which is very deceiving. 2. I noticed that one of the ladies used the dirty rag from wiping the table also used the rag for wiping the utensils. I asked for a plastic one instead after seeing that. 3. I dined in Kamayan and instantly when I got in the car I broke out in hives. I went to my allergenist right away because I had trouble breathing at the same time. To find out, their food has so much MSG. 4. The palabok noodles smelled really bad and it had bubbles. Just FYI if palabok noodles has bubbles and has a foul smell, it already has gone bad. I did not bother asking for a new one as I was already disgusted and there was literally no staff checking on your table just taking your orders at the counter. 5. The food is good for photos but that is basically it. Food is very salty and oily. Their lechon kawali does not even have the skin on. They are not Michelin rated, they are in the Michelin guide. If you want Filipino food, this is the place. Really great food, and lovely folks running the restaurant. We loved the pop-ups they ran before this opened, and we really love the restaurant. It also has that awesome Filipino touch all over the restaurant, with awesome murals and signage. Can't recommend more, you should really give it a shot.
