Had a less than mediocre experience here for lunch today. First of all, we arrived at 1:15pm - well ahead of their 2pm closing time. There was a solitary man at the sushi bar, but the restaurant was otherwise empty. Waitress, who was attentive, announced that 1:50 was last call, given their 2pm closing time. No problem, we ordered two lunch specials along with an eggplant dish and a Chardonnay for my wife, and waitress had our order by 1:25. Food came out quickly. The sushi was average at best, and the pieces of sushi were tiny. I mean tiny. You could have fit all of the $50 worth of sushi and eggplant in an average size soup bowl. At around 1:50, bizarrely, the waitress swooped in to remove the little pot of soy sauce. Then she was back a minute later with the check (WTF?). At this point, I laughed at the absurdity of her behavior. We had quickly finished our 4 ounces of sushi, it was 1:58pm, and my wife was just finishing her wine. It's not like we were lingering (although the waitress certainly was). You would think the place would be happy to have customers, since we were the only ones in the restaurant, and not overtly rush us... but that's just what they did. The quality here is unparalleled! Kanda is a traditional Japanese restaurant owned by itamae Mitsu-san. Mitsu [meet - sue] works every single shift, lunch and dinner, to make sure that every customer receives the quality food and service he is known for. If you're serious about sushi, sit at the bar and let Mits [ meets] prepare you delicacies like akamutsu (premium black throat snapper) and Copper River salmon from Alaska. Kanda's menu centers around fresh nigiri and sashimi. If you like Americanized rolls with cream cheese and jalapeños, this is not the place for you. The specials board is the spot to look for the chef's recommendations. Try the Kimme dai (Golden-eye snapper) or amberjack and you won't regret it! The bottom of the board reads "We do NOT serve chili sauce, eel sauce, special rolls or hot dogs!" That is Mitsu's funny way of pointing out how silly it is to ask for extra sauce and special rolls at an authentic sushi restaurant. He is trying to offer you a literal taste of his culture so be respectful and follow his rules. If he says "no soy sauce" it's not because he is trying to deprive you of that salty goodness, but because he has already taken care to season every piece of nigiri perfectly before it reaches your hands. There is no talking on your cell phone at the sushi bar which I love because seriously what is more obnoxious than the person next to you blabbing loudly on their phone while you're trying to enjoy your dining experience! The sushi bar is meant for... you guessed it, sushi! If you are big into rolls and hot plates, sit at a table. The restaurant is small and intimate with 5 tables and a 14 seat sushi bar, great for couples and small parties. They take reservations, and can get busy on Friday and Saturday nights so it's best to call ahead. The interior of the restaurant is clean and inviting with beautiful natural light coming through large windows, and the chairs are comfy as can be making it hard for me to leave every time! This is a clean little restaurant with a nice outdoor seating area. The area is small; not a large amount of seating indoors. There is a sushi counter you can sit at, or one of a few two or four person tables. I dined here today for a light, refreshing meal and was not disapointed in that regard. Service was good; staff were friendly and polite. I was given a hot towel when I sat down, which is customarily used only to clean your hands, but I'm white so I pressed it to my face and it felt damn good to do so. I ordered a sunomono (cucumber salad) and a shrimp tempura roll. Both were small portions and while this selection might fill you up at another restaurant, I did not leave full from Kanda from only this. The sonomono came with some shredded bonito on top. Ordinarily I would avoid bonito as I'm turned off by dried fish, but I ate it since it came on my salad, and it wasn't offensive. The fish flavor was very mild. The salad didn't have all that many cucumber slices, and was mostly other preserved greens. Seaweed perhaps? The flavors were all very subtle in a pleasant way, and I couldn't identify all the ingredients by taste. My roll was attractively prepared and I appreciated that they had soy paper for it, as well as that they took the shell off the shrimp's tail, leaving only the last fins inedible due to exoskeleton. The ponzu sauce delicately included with the roll was fantastic, with a very lovely citrus flavor. Overall I would return to this restaurant if I feel like ordering more things and spending some cash. My lunch for the small salad and small roll plus a soft drink was $22 with tip. read more

What a joke! My wife and I would be considered by most people sushi connoisseurs. We eat our sushi in a very traditional way, mostly ordering sashimi, very little rice, lighter fishes first and never eat Americanize rolls. We had not been there in several years because the last time we were there the chef (owner?) was very rude and provided us terrible service. Tonight we finally decided to give them another try...big mistake. We were greeted by a rude hostess that told us twice that there was a 3 piece minimum per person. When we sat down at the bar, there was a sign every two feet that said in bold letters "3 piece minimum". The board on the wall spelled out the rules that included "no chili sauce, no eel sauce, no cell phones and no hot dogs". So far I could live with it...so when it came time to finally order, I asked the chef to prepare a sashimi dish of two of the fish that were listed on that same board with all the rules. I requested half of two different varieties of snapper. The chef had to go ask the other chef (owner) if that was acceptable. His reply was a very dismissive shake of his index finger, absolutely not! I looked over at my wife and said "do you want to stay here?" And we both looked at each other and got up and left but first told the chef we remembered why we have not been back! Bottom line, the place has no ambience, smells like fish and has rude employees! I have been eating sushi from sushi chef Mitsu since 1994. I followed him through every restaurant he's worked at since. This is hands down the best sushi experience you can get in the United States. Every fish is hand selected and if you ask, he will tell you everything about the fish, where it was caught, why it's special, and how it should be eaten. THE FISH WILL MELT IN YOUR MOUTH. Trust me when I say, I am in a VERY BAD mood right now. Maybe even more ANGRY. Yes, I read the reviews. Yes, I paid attention to what was supposed to be great, excellent, outstanding......what to try, what not to try. I even took notes. I didn't mind that I was going to pay well above what I'm used to paying. No big deal because I'm going to be eating "authentic, high quality, amazing" sushi. Worth it, right? I went here with a completely open mind, great anticipation, and excitement. Well, I am standing very alone now as I'm going to claim amongst mostly FIVE STAR reviews that this place is downright DREADFUL and HORRIBLE. We paid $130 for mediocre service, really bad fish, terribly small portions, and left there a little hungry. BAD, BAD combination. First of all, the appetizers. We ordered the mixed tempura......5 pieces of tempura. "Okay" batter texture, relatively light, but it was greasy as can be. NOT GOOD. Then, we ordered 2 skewers of Chilean Sea Bass in a miso sauce. The miso sauce waaaay overpowered the light, mild sea bass, AND I wasn't real sure it was supposed to be cooked or raw. It was 1/2 raw and only mildly cooked. It was cool and warm.......but not cold all the way, and not hot all the way. What the heck was it supposed to be? That turned me off, and the miso sauce was so sweet and so salty, it was just a loser to me. Yet, I got this dish because someone raved about it. Totally puzzled and worried at this point. Then, we ordered from the sushi menu. Okay, I saw the prices. I'm used to $3-4 for 2 pieces of sushi, whatever kind. Here, it was basically $8-10 for the same kinds of fish we're used to getting (2 pieces still). I wasn't going to get upset, though, because my Yelper buds promised me fabulous quality, so I'm down for that. I began by having problems comparing the sushi order sheet with the items listed in the actual menu. They had different names, and they just didn't match up once I figured out what was what. It annoyed me. It was uninspired, but then, I figured this was the "authentic" version. Whatever. Enough making excuses for them. I am very sad and let down tonight because the pieces ended up being so thin and scrawny.........but wait, it gets worse. The fish quality, the texture, WAS DISGUSTING.......chewy, tough, didn't melt in our mouths whatsoever. We pay far less at several other places, and ALWAYS, the texture and quality is top notch. NOT HERE. What the hell is going on? What am I missing here? Seriously, I don't want to hear how authentic this place is...........I'd rather have my Korean, non-authentic, or even Americanized version if it means I can get by for less money, much bigger pieces, AND outstanding fish quality. The rolls we got (2 different kinds) were on average of $14 with only SIX pieces (why not EIGHT like usual???), and they were the size of a quarter......and I'm being generous with that. To make matters worse, the roll pieces fell apart, each one, as did the sushi placed on the rice. If this is such a stellar place, why was everything so bad? So NOT happy. Listen, I could go on and on evoking the bitterness I feel right now. It really pisses me off I paid THIS MUCH money for such BAD food. I have to reason this......ya win some, ya lose some. This place is a real loser for me, and I can assure you with all my heart that I WILL NEVER GO BACK HERE. The fish selection is comparable to the best sushi restaurants in LA. Kinmae Dai, Sea Bream, Pike Mackerel, SB and Japanese Uni, just to mention a few. Mitsu has a way of preparing the fish, some items he serves aburi, some with delicate toppings, all of his techniques add a layer of complexity to the nigiri sushi. Please do not go to this restaurant!!! This is not a real sushi bar. The sushi menu is small the prices are high and the quality is just shy of sickening. They don't except the coupon when you show up they make you check in, go home print it out and come back with in 24 hours. The place was about half full and it took over 2 hours to get half the food. The other half never came due to the fact that they had ran out of food and the waitress never told us. The guy in charge is a old white guy who probable doesn't even know what sushi is out side of a California roll. For a recommendation go to cho cho sun. They are a few miles down the road. I just happened to see this new sushi place while out doing errands, and found out later it had been opened for a month and a half. So I was excited to try it. We went in for lunch. The sushi bar is elegant with a beautiful kitchen, wonderful counter and cushy chairs. The bathroom is even elegant with REAL towels to dry your hands with. Nice. The sushi chefs were very nice, and knowledgeable about their product. They made some good recommendations and their specials were of fish you do not see often enough in sushi bars, so that was a real plus to try a few new things and to have a few favorites I haven't been able to have in quite a while. Service was very good, and they poured our sake for us a number of times. It is nice to get some attention and made for a good experience. I think I found my new favorite place! read more

It lacked fish and rice inside and it was rolled in a way I have never, ever seen before - where a small strip of seaweed was put on the end to close it off. I'm all about presentation as well as the quality of the food and the way it was rolled was a big turn off for me. I questioned whether I had an experienced chef preparing my food. The fish quality was good - but since I was not happy with the hand roll, we decided not to order additional items, paid the bill and left. I felt if we ordered additional items, we may get small/tiny portions and we didn't want to feel ripped off. Kanda Sushi was our final stop in our day-excursion to Ventura County. The restaurant has an outdoor patio area if you want to bring your dogs. However, there are no heat lamps and nothing to really shield you when the wind is blowing like crazy. We were seated immediately on a Saturday night and ordered: Wakame Sunomono Yellowtail Hand Roll Salmon Sushi Albacore Sushi California Hand Roll Shrimp Tempura Shrimp Tempura Roll Green Tea Ice Cream I love the vinegar-y flavors in the wakame sunomono. It was absolutely delicious and a great starter to our meal. The Hand Rolls were good, but be warned, the sushi chefs put wasabe in the rolls themselves. I didn't know this beforehand. So I created my soy sauce and wasabe concoction and then dipped the hand roll in the sauce. My nose started to burn and I realized that I may be in a little trouble. Luckily, the wasabe attack was short and I just used soy sauce for the remainder of the roll. All the fish tasted fresh, and looked great. The Shrimp Tempura was battered and crispy on the outside. The tempura sauce complemented it perfectly. I only had one piece of the Shrimp Tempura Roll, but wasn't really impressed by it. The Green Tea Ice Cream had a strong tea flavor. I prefer my green tea ice cream to be a little more sweet. Our tummies were happy and full, and we were ready to head back home to La-La Land. read more
