Restaurant looked clean and had a nice quiet ambience. The food was ok-they didn't want to seat us at the bar and made sure to reiterate the "3 rolls per person" rule (which was ok) but no one was friendly and actually they were quiet snobby for no reason. We should have left immediately but we were hoping the vibe would change. Needless to say we will NEVER be back and I will not recommend this local establishment to anyone. Delicious, high quality sushi, some of the best we've had in the area. All of the nigiri was perfectly prepared and fresh. The chef serves traditional sushi, not slathered in oils or spicy mayo. The fish was so very good, we loved everything we ordered. The service was responsive, friendly, and professional. We sat in the back and were well cared for. The front sushi bar looked fun. I frankly don't understand how did this place get so many stars. Maybe this place used to be a good restaurant, but clearly not anymore. We were looking for a nice japanese restaurant and because this place had so many good reviews we decided to try it. BIG MISTAKE. When we came in we noticed that interior was pretty cheap, but in a lot of cases places with a poor interior has a nice food. Not in this case though... If you have ever eaten in any Japanese restaurant in the city (for example, just in LA, I am not even talking about anything authentic), you will immediately see the difference. Nice pictures that you see on yelp is very very far from what we were served. Sashimi were not fresh and cut sloppy. Rolls were made so ugly and distasteful that rolls in any supermarket are much more delicious and professionally made!!! This is just ridiculous! We bought 4 dishes and everything except for tempura was awful not to mention that it took them forever to make this japanese dish parody! And it caused us $80!!! Soooo not worth it!!! Plus both waitress were barely speaking any English, so they couldn't answer any of our questions and brought us a wrong order at first. (And No - they are not japanese). Cooks were also not japanese ( I don't know when was that picture on yelp taken with cooks who appear to be japanese, but when we came - cooks were different, which I guess mainly affected food quality). I needed time to put my thoughts together, my friend asked me to come to westlake try out Kanda. Walking in was a pleasant surprise decorated very nicely. We arrived at 6:25 only 2 other people were there which kind of was surprising to be so empty. I sat down the owner greeted us, I viewed sushi display which had very little on there white plates, which looked very dried out, but I continued to stay positive. I consider myself very knowledgeable of sushi. When I requested sea salt lemon on my halibut, he looked at me said No I don't do that! Well at that point I looked at him in shock, we ordered Spivey tuna cut roll I requested extra creamy his answer it is premade we can't do that. This was worst place I have ever been to eat sushi, the owner was so very rude. But my big concern was his food quality should be checked out and inspected by ca. department of food and beverage. I ran in here to grab sushi to go before an appointment. I go two spicy tuna handrolls. They were quick and kind but my rolls were on the small side. The flavor was ok but the texture and look of the spicy tuna was weird and the seaweed hard to eat. I think they had seeds from what they use to make it spicy, which was hard on my teeth. Yet another low-key, yet incredible meal at Kanda Sushi. Mitsu-san attended to us at the sushi bar. We savored "samma," or pike mackerel, flown in from Japan - gorgeous fish, umami galore, totally irresistible. We continued with "akamutsu," or Japanese rosy sea bass - fabulous. The usual suspects, "aji" and "saba" followed, and then the triumphant "hotate," or scallop, gorgeously dressed with a hint of lemon. We did the "ikura" or salmon roe, mostly out of habit, and then finished with "sake" or king salmon, literally melting on the plate. A couple of junmai ginjo Kikusui, a bargain at $13 bucks a bottle, some hoji-cha, and finally the green tea cheesecake. Wifey chatted with Mitsu-san in Japanese, and they shared some jokes as usual. Not a "California roll" in sight, rice for the nigiri was as tiny and compact as it should be, and everything was just stellar. No need to trek into WLA or dream of Jiro, no pun intended - we have a fabulous, authentic sushi-ya with a great itamae right here in Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks.とうございます, Mitsu-San and company! read more

Well, I've officially been coming here for over 3 years, and in that time I have been to Japan and back. I've eaten at Jiro's, I've eaten sushi breakfast in Tsukiji, and I definitely ran the gamut of 'authentic' sushi - Hole in the wall joints in Akihabara, upper-class salarymen hotspots in Akasaka-Mitsuke, everything. Mitsu-san runs a world class restaurant. His omakase is second maybe only to Jiro, and you can't top a place that sources all of its fish locally and seasonally, laboring the way they do to bring you that quality. What you do get is something damn near close to perfection, with only the best tasting fish prepared with a traditionalist mentality in mind. Everything Mitsu-san has ever given me has been delicious, and I would always take his recommendation of the day (he too has items subject to availability for only carrying the freshest fish). I could go on and on, but know that Kanda Sushi is the real deal (and isn't trying to sell you the idea of high class, it just is). read more

We tried to dine there this evening but the service was so rude and unpleasant, and the atmosphere so uptight that we were forced to walked out. The hostess made me feel like Julia Roberts In Pretty Woman making sure we were going to order 3 orders before being allowed to sit at the empty sushi bar. Which of course we were going to order way more than that anyhow. So we promised her yes we were worthy of the empty dead sushi bar, after she repeatedly made sure we were going to meet that criteria. The fish did not look fresh, the sushi chef was not knowledgeable in making sashimi dishes, he had to consult with the owner before making anything. We tried to order a sashimi dish that is normally around $30-40 and were denied. But the guy sitting next to us ordered a $9 shrimp tempura roll and they gladly made it. Not a place if you are expecting authentic, fresh dishes. The sign says no eel sauce but that is all they serve lol. It's a joke. If you want boring rolls and bad Sushi this is a great place but if you want fresh fish and creative fresh Japanese dishes there are plenty of other amazing options in the area that can provide a pleasant and delicious experience, no hassle! read more

The chef from the old Suki 7 opened up his own restaurant in Westlake (close to the Do-it center) and it rules! We went there on a recommendation from a friend and were not disappointed. Pretty much everything on the menu is top notch and mouth watering. My wife and I were regulars at our local Agoura joint but it quickly went downhill with new ownership. We'd been driving into the valley for decent sushi but no longer! Great service and food. The restaurant is very classy and clean, prices are fair. Not ridiculously cheap but not expensive. A true bargain considering the quality of the fish. read more

while eating at melting pot i saw Kanda and with all the great reviews on yelp, why wouldn't i want to try it out. i went with some of my sushi loving friends. we sat at the bar and enjoyed chit chatting with the sushi chef. i ordered... monkfish liver appetizer salmon pompano king mackeral yellowtail japanese uni the fish was very fresh. my favorites were the pompano and salmon. i honestly couldn't tell the difference between japanese uni and other uni i've eatten at other restaurants. the salmon and yellowtail were nothing special to me. however, i did like that they put sauce on the nigiri so i only used my soy sauce for my ginger. kanda is more pricey than most sushi restaurants i frequent. if i could afford to come back more often i would. until then, i still like tokiwa and red coral more. read more

Finally some decent sushi in Conejo Valley! Mitsu is the real deal, not a fly-by-night itamae you so often encounter in the area. Fish quality is very good and rice is well seasoned. Only place I've encountered in Conejo Valley offering Japanese uni. IMHO it's got the leg up over Shibuya in Calabasas and better deal than Nobu in Malibu. This place would have received 5 stars, but had to knock it down one due to the wait service. If someone has to ask for a tea refill more than once then we have a service issue. Besides the great sushi Chef who can tell you where he gets his seafood from (I have no idea, how accurate the information he is giving me!), he was friendly and suggested a few fish items. I tried the following: Yellow tail Japanese Mackerel Octopus Soft Shell crab roll Albacore Halibut Spicy Tuna-it was ok, could of used a little bit more kick Seared Tuna Tempura Roll Delish, the only thing I did not like is when I received the bill $75! As everyone else has said, the sushi is very traditional and very fresh. Mitsu-san knows good fish and he showcases every piece, resulting in a tremendously enjoyable experience. Steve and I stopped by mid-week for some omakase, because after reading all these other glowing reviews, I couldn't wait to try it out. I've had some disappointing Yelp experiences in this area, but I could tell that Kanda had made a deep impression on those who'd tasted its sushi, so I shelved the skepticism (and even stuffed the always-ready-to-rear-its-head disappointment waaay down under the surface) and let excitement set in. You know how, often, having too high an expectation can make something that's actually quite good seem not as impressive? The opposite happens, too--but it's this downgrading of good stuff that bums me out. It didn't happen here. Every piece of sushi that we were served was amazing. Even the run-of-the-mill salmon nigiri that we started off with was delicious. We sat directly in front of Mitsu-san while he worked, so we got to see him do his magic. I had to restrain myself from just stealing pieces of fish off almost-finished plates--no matter whose they were. The fish is all served at the perfect temperature--not stone cold, but cool. Enough for the texture and the taste to emerge. Some were sauced w/ a touch of this or that, and none needed shoyu. Mitsu-san joked that we'd be unable to sleep, still thinking about the food. He wasn't far wrong. Some reviewers have said it's pricey. If you're eating fish of this quality at a restaurant that's clearly been put together with some thought for ambience, it's not going to be the same price as something you'd find at Yoshinoya or even the run-of-the-mill sushi joints that are so common here. This place ranks right up there with the best sushi places in L.A.--and what a treat to have found one that's not all crowds and hype...and inevitable let-down. read more

We spend an average of $1,500-$2,000 per month on sushi. It is our family's favorite cuisine - and there are 6 of us. We came here recently and were blown away with the quality of the food. Today was no exception; however, they did arguably the most offensive thing I have ever experienced at a restaurant. Towards the end of our meal our waitress asked us if we would like anything else - I responded with "could you ask the chef to surprise us? - we don't care what he makes or how much it costs - the only request is that it is spicy" She said OK - came back a moment later with a few options and I replied, "they all good sound good, whatever he thinks we will enjoy - surprise us". Then we waited, and waited, and waited as they closed the restaurant around us. I asked the waitress if we were going to get what we had asked for and she responded "here is your check - maybe next time" Are you freaking kidding me??? The experience went from a 10 to a zero instantly. If you wish to support an establishment that appreciates you business, find another restaurant!!! Agreeing with other reviews: the -best- sushi in Conejo Valley. Perhaps that I've had in a long while. Defied expectations. It's a rare occasion indeed that wife and I get out, but when visiting the folks for the Holidays and grandma/pa offer to baby sit the munchkin you accept. We agreed that a sushi date was in order. A quick yelping led us to Kanda and were impressed with the reviews. Words popped out like: "traditional" and "no fancy rolls or hot dogs". That's right. They don't even serve chicken teriyaki. But let me tell you. The sukiyaki short ribs were out of this world...and very reasonably priced in my opinion. We were tempted to order omakase but despite going out on a limb for "expensive" sushi, ordered a la carte. Everything was top notch. Fresh, simple, and timely. The clientele and Mitsu-san were friendly, hospitable, and jovial. We ordered at least 7 different fish and Mitsu also chimed in with some recommendations when we tried to go back in for seconds of our favorites. Highlights included lightly seared japanese red snapper, king mackerel, hamachi (to die for), kampachi, and shima aji. Our bill, while certainly pricier than our normal joint, came out quite reasonably considering everything we ordered. Then BAM- I ordered 1 skewer of Kobe beef about 1/3 of an ounce & I got charged a complete rip off of $ 20 for it - In my opinion if you have something that's 2-4 times the price of everything else on the menu it should be advised to customer.... Another poster said this place was for a "splurge." I gotta agree. I've eaten here three times now and find: 1) Prices that test the limits of your credit card, 2) Small servings and a limited menu 3) The best sushi for miles and miles. Wait staff is non-existent. Don't even expect service. Caucasian women who haven't served tables before, and parade an unattractive air and attitude. "Bar" patrons seem to fare a bit better. Today, I had the luncheon special "7-Fish Churashi." $17.00. It contained seven...count them...seven pieces of fish (not several pieces of seven different fishes - seven small pieces of fish). Still hungry, I ordered Spicy Tuna Cut Roll.. an additional $7.00. Six small pieces. (I drank water, trying to save a little on the bill!) I would love to make this a 'regular' sushi stop...I sushi at least once each week, usually more often. BUT, too pricey... therefore it must be reserved for a 'splurge.' Now, that said... Terrific sushi, sashimi, rice, etc. Being kind of a nut about wasabi, I bring my own fresh wasabi whenever I eat sushi, 'cuz I don't like the horseradish powder/paste that every place uses. Kanda, however, freshly grates wasabi root for each order ...wow! ...And worth a couple extra bucks to me. They use actual horseradish leaves in their presentations (too many use green plastic things...even many of the better sushi places do). For the most part, fish is melt in your mouth tender (salmon had a bit of silver skin which bothered me). Fish eggs were fresh, nice 'pop' and then vanished in my mouth. Only the slightest touch of sake taste about them (many places try to extend the life of their fish eggs - caviar - by keeping them soaking in sake). This was un-offensive. If you eat here all the time, I'm afraid it's the 'sushi god's' way of saying. "You've got too much money!" Can't bring my wife here. Very good sushi but a bit on the small side. Good service and everyone was very friendly. This is another restaurant with a serious acoustics problem. It's small and narrow with no sound absorption. The table next to us was so loud we had to yell to hear each other. We moved farther away, still no good. We ended up talking ridiculously loud in order to hear each other. I can tell you that the loud table was on a date. Apparently, she is or was a friend of his ex. He doesn't want to get married again, at least not right away. He likes hiking, going to the beach, he's been to Europe ... bla bla bla ... I can't remember anything about her. We weren't making fun of her as much. My suggestion, hang tapestries or something similar (that will absorb sound) on the walls of the hallway and in the back portion of the restaurant. If it doesn't have it already, install carpet. The wall covering has to be material, a painting won't do. Better yet, curtains hung on the wall covering nothing. Curtains work great for sound absorption and they give the illusion of covering something that isn't there - like a window or door which would make the place look bigger. Even better - if they put dim lights or soft light boxes behind the curtains it would really look as if there were windows and have a great soft light feeling. read more

We had high expectations for this place, being that they put on a front as if they're top-shelf sushi. All the signs were there... literally. "No cell phones" (I don't mind that) even a pen board that says, "no eel sauce, spicy mayo, or hot dogs". All of these things I would be ok with, except it starts to feel like you got bamboozled when their below average sushi is served. We ordered a variety of nigiri and it was all subpar -- even worse, the chef handed us albacore and called it halibut. I was torn as to what I was going to give Kanda. I was wavering between 3 and 4 stars. Let me explain. I am a picky sushi and sashimi fan, and I judge everything based on how fresh the fish is, not rolls. So, when I read the reviews about Kanda being an authentic sushi place, my hubby and I went out of our way to drive here (and I always like to support Yelp-friendly businesses!) In the end, I give Kanda 4 stars simply because the quality of the fish really is five stars, and I appreciate the uniqueness of some of the preparation and offerings, which I've never had before. The monk fish liver I absolutely loved -- my hubby less so, but I really appreciated the slightly sweet sauce it was in. I also like the tiny ginger topping on the tuna magoro sushi. We ordered some sashimi, chef's choice, and had four different types of fish, each with four pieces. It was really good, but the portions are tiny. Now, I understand that quality doesn't mean quantity but for the prices on the menu, we found it a bit tiny. In the end, though, we probably should have doubled our order of sashimi because we felt we needed more fish. Also, they had a new waitress dealing with us when we were served. Now, it's a bit of a pet peeve of mine when there's a new waitress that they don't know much about the menu, and when I first asked, she said they don't provide internet -- when she got confused, they sent over the head waitress which was all smiles and very sweet, who in the end, took our order AND provided me with the free WIFI password. This is part of the reason why I wanted to give Kanda 3 stars, but I also changed my mind because they DID deal with the issue swiftly and courteously. :) Good service doesn't always mean perfect service; it also means rectifying hiccups with a smile. So, try Kanda sushi if you love fresh fish, unique offerings -- but be prepared to pay for smaller portions. read more

His albacore melts in your mouth. This is a traditional Japanese place and does not carry the crazy elaborate rolls that other sushi places carry. Probably the best sushi restaurant in the Conejo Valley! I have been looking for a sushi restaurant that is reasonable but also does not compromise in quality. Well, I have now found my sushi spot! Mitsu is wonderful and I understand that he has been in the valley for years. (He just recently relocated his restaurant to a shopping center in TO Blvd.) The Albacore belly is awesome and he only carries sushi that are in season. Monk fish liver is divine and there are other entrees that are worth trying if sushi is not your forte. My daughter loves the tempura and they will also make miso soup w/ clams for you if you ask. Now that is authentic. There is also the eggplant dish that I love! We ate so much and there were so many things we wanted to try. We will definitely go back. I recommend sitting at the sushi bar since the service at the tables will be a bit slower. Mitsu is the only sushi chef there so if the place is full, you will be waiting for your food a bit. I came here a on a rainy day and the restaurant had a warm modern zen ambience that was pefect for the weather. They give you edamame on the house to start which is always a plus at a japanese restuaruant. I started with the albacore [which i got 2nds and 3rds of] and hamachi which were not only super fresh but sweet which means it was great sushi. I never eat salmon, but had to try it upon request and it was also delicious! The spicy albacore roll was made w/big chunks so you can see the quality [not like other restaurants where they grind it up like mystery fish]. They say not to eat sushi on rainy days because it tends to be fishier, but i had none of that here which means the grade of sushi was an A+. I love crispy tempura and here they have a combination tempura that includes nori wrapped crab meat and fish along with the usual shrimp and vegetables. I had to eat all the tempura to the last bite even though I was super full. The miso soup was savory and not salty which I like and the miso glazed black cod was absolutely scrumptious! The Japanese server here is kind and warm and makes the experience even nicer... all I can say is that from beginning to end' the food and service was EXCELLENT ! read more

Bob F. clearly feels passionately about this establishment to not only single out my review but also to question my credibility. I can certainly speak to the integrity of my review, which I must admit was based upon one visit. But, any quality restaurant should prize consistency. Maguro can refer to many types of tuna, but bluefin tuna is the most prized (and quintessential Edo style sushi). Anyone who truly knows sushi knows this. Bluefin tuna is referred to as "hon" maguro. "Hon" is the Japanese root for "true" or "truth". Order the bluefin tuna at this establishment and see if it arrives to you scored with ponzu sauce. If not, this is a positive evolution from my visit. I would have tried chutoro or otoro, but it was not on the "whiteboard" the day I visited. The night I visited, there were 2 sushi chefs--one was rather less experienced. I defend my practice of asking the opinion of the chef or waiter what is especially good or fresh. A non-committal response of pointing to the white board, saying all is good, is rather off-putting. read more
