Always a great experience. Best choice (but maybe the only choice?) for real hibachi in Johns Creek

My friends went here about a week ago for a casual meet up and dinner. We had a pretty large party, made reservations prior, and were seated quickly. Since it was a Thursday night, the restaurant was pretty much empty. The interior was clean and decorated nicely, with your typical American-Japanese accents. The seats surround the hibachi station counter style, so everyone gets a decent view of the chef at work. The service was okay at best. I'm not sure if she was new, but our waitress constantly made mistakes with our orders, almost every single time a dish arrives. Our hibachi chef, on the other hand, was pretty attentive. After we ordered, the brought small plates of salad for everyone. It was just plain, packaged iceberg lettuce salad, except you have the option of getting ginger dressing or regular salad dressing. The ginger dressing was pretty tart and tasted nice, but the salad was really out of place in a Japanese restaurant. They also served miso soup, which is sooo good on a cold winter day. I wish it was all you can drink like how some places have self-serve miso soup. The hibachi show was fun and "flamboyant"; the onion volcano was a crowd pleaser. I ordered the Pork Katsu Bento ($19), which was well worth price. It came with a dragon roll on the side, tempura, and sauteed veggies, pork katsu, and a bowl of rice. The dragon roll was your typical, run-of-the-mill fake crab meet roll, with slivers of avocado inside. It tasted standard, like the sushi from an Asian buffet. The tempura was okay as well: stayed crispy and was a contrast with the other things in the bento box. I thought the pork katsu was a bit dry, and not as tender as I would liked it to be. Overall a pretty decent package, got to taste a bit of everything in the bento box. I think it was well worth it than the other items on the menu, and would probably order it again. It's understandable that this restaurant was catered to more Americans. With the show and flair, the place is popular for special events, but for me, not so much. The Japanese food is average at best, but I'll be willing to try some of their other stuff. Hibachi aside, there are better Asian restaurants around the area. read more

It was my partner's day off, so he rolled off the bed close to noon late and he was immediately hungry. And for some reason, he just wanted to have bento box lunch at Kani house. I haven't heard good reviews from my friends who has been there before but I have never been there myself. So I braved myself to give it a go. Kani house is the intersection of 141 and abbott's bridge rd, at the same complex as H-Mart and long horn steakhouse. Before entering the restaurant, I almost had an urge to go to Long horn instead, but suppressed it and went in. The host greeted and seated us. The restaurant is huge with so many sections and also a V.I.P section. No idea what gets you there, but this place could host large parties. We were given a lunch menu and sushi rolls menu as well. The lunch menu had salad entrees, sushi combination items, bento boxes and some hibachi items. We ordered, 1) Papa's Roll - shrimp tempura & spicy onion topped with seared scallops, avocado, & wasabi sauce 2) Don Katsu Bento box - served with soup, our house salad, shrimp & vegetable tempura, 4pcs of California roll, & steamed rice 3) Galbi bento box - served with soup, our house salad, shrimp & vegetable tempura, 4pcs of California roll, & I got fried rice instead($1.50 extra) Papa's roll was underwhelming. The rice wasn't seasoned, so even though the roll looked nice and appetizing, the roll didn't come together as a tasty one. All both boxes comes with same items other than the protein the individual has ordered. The soup wasn't Miso and it wasn't too bad but the salad was delicious and I wished they had given more. And then there was tempura - which was heavily battered with under-salted tempura batter. Probably the worst tempura I have tasted ever(that's saying much, because I have been to so many Japanese restaurants). And California roll was passable, except for the under seasoned rice. Don Katsu(fried pork cutlet) was good - crispy and non-oily outside and tender inside. Not the best I have had, but it was good. But we liked the Galbi(short ribs) better. It was succulent, juicy and delicious. I had ordered it with fried rice for $1.50 extra and I thought it was good. Over all, Sushi at this place is not going to be good(if they don't know how to season the rice, they don't know how to make good sushi. Period) and tempura wasn't impressive either. But if you like items like galbi, katsu or hibachi and fried rice items, you could give this place a try. If you are going for lunch, they are open only from 11.30 am but they will seat you if you get there 10 mins early. 3 stars. read more

I found myself in Duluth again and this time at Kani House. My friends chose this restaurant for a birthday dinner as they were in the mood for hibachi. I checked out the menu before going to the restaurant and pretty much just wanted appetizers and vegetarian sushi rolls. If I got hibachi... it would've just been vegetables and rice... which I eat all the time at home. I ordered the vegetable gyoza - steamed, the vegetable spring rolls, and the sweet potato tempura sushi rolls. The gyoza, were rather sad, watery, and not something I would order again, unless the pan fried version is much much better. The spring rolls were okay, so that was a plus. The sweet potato tempura roll had potential to be great but the sweet potato flavor got lost somewhere and I felt like I was just eating rice with something that was fried awhile ago and was now just rubbery in the middle. So service started out fine, our large party was sat when we all arrived, our drink orders were taken, and we perused the menu to figure out what we wanted. After everyone ordered... we were brought salad and soup. I asked the server what kind of soup was it... and he said chicken soooo I gave it to one of my friends. Before long the hibachi chef came out with his cart and started to cook the food. I enjoy watching people cook, since I do it everyday, so his lack of show that my friends complained about didn't bother me... I enjoyed him setting the grill on fire so I was entertained. I also glanced at the chef at the next table, he was tossing food into the mouths of his customers and I thought to myself... we were not the kind of group for food to be tossed at period. Well by the time the chef was done with the hibachi, almost everyone had empty drinks. The server didn't come back to see if we wanted anything else (because I had wanted to order one more thing, but gave up). Someone else filled our drinks, not sure what was poured into my cup, but it resembled flat pepsi... Four of my friends didn't get their steamed rice until the chef asked for it to be brought over. Also another friend never received their appetizer. It just seemed like there were so many large parties going on (because I heard the birthday song, sang 4 times) and with busy dining room service we were a bit neglected. Overall, it was just an off...experience. The food was meh, and could've been better and service definitely could've been more attentive. But I would not mind going back if the opportunity presented itself, but not in a large group or for hibachi. Just regular dining service and perhaps I will be writing an updated review on how everything was much much better. read more

Do not I repeat do not order take out from here. My coworkers and I were too busy to take a lunch but some of us wanted sushi, others don't eat sushi so we thought Kani House could satisfy both. We ordered over the phone.. that's where it started. We tried to order lunch sushi. We were viewing the menu online and the lady on the phone had no idea what we were talking about. She put us on hold 3 times to find out if we could get sushi rolls that were on the menu right on their website. Ugh. Fast forward to our assistant picking up the order. No one would help her. She waited 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged her. Then they had left out miso soups. Then the credit card machine didn't work. She gets back with our food and no silverware, no drink that one person ordered and paid for, no soy sauce either. Sushi was mediocre as well. read more

Not bad except for steak bento box which had a mystery meat which was inedible. Complained but ignored.

3 of us just stopped in for lunch around 12:15pm. Told the host we wanted to dine in (not do hibachi). He said it would be a 5-minute wait because they only had one server. We waited several minutes while the host just stood there. We then walked out ....didn't feel like it was a priority to get us seated. How hard is it for the host (or hostess) to seat folks, hand out menus and get some water? Ugh read more

If anyone asked me to recommend a Japanese hibachi restaurant in Atlanta I would say Kani House without hesitation. You leave not only with a full and satisfied stomach, but with great memories and a desire to come back again. It's a place definitely fit for groups or families with children, as the environment encourages socializing and the servers definitely contribute to the whole experience. I especially loved starting with the Kani Rangoons, which came out fast and kept us anticipating for the entree. I ordered the steak bento box which comes with soup, salad, California roll and edamame included with everything in the box. Everything was perfect! I usually worry about the level of saltiness of bento boxes but the steak and veggies were perfectly seasoned. Also the tempura was the perfect consistency. The sherbet at the end topped the whole meal off just right. Needless to say the bento boxes here definitely will fill you up and you get a good amount of everything! Kani House is everything I would want in a restaurant --obviously great food, but also a fun experience as a whole. 2.5 stars. Like I've said before, I'm a sucker for deals! So when I saw a groupon deal for this place, I had to have it! I've been to Kani House a few times before and was never really impressed but because of the groupon deal, I decided to give the place another try. My fiance and I decided to go with the Kani Maki special since we were both craving sushi. The Kani Maki special consists of 2 miso soups, 2 salads, 2 desserts(vanilla ice cream or sherbert), and 5 different rolls(spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, california, rainbow, and kani house roll). All this for only $38.95(before tax) which is a pretty good deal. Everything here is just ok. Soup/Salad- Your standard miso soup and salad with ginger dressing. Sushi Rolls- The rolls ranged from "Meh. I've experienced better" to just "ok". Ice cream/sherbert- They looked like they were both melted and then refrozen (see picture). Ew. Service here was good. The last time I visited Kani House I tried the steak hibachi and that was flavorless from what I remember. I won't be back unless I come across another great deal that I can't pass up! read more

I have been to Kani House Twice in the past month. Last night was for my birthday, and once again the drinks, sushi and hibachi were some of the best I've had. The service is always fast and friendly, the apps specifically the spring rolls, and firecracker scallops were delicious! I tried cold cucumber sake for the first time and ended up liking it better than hot sake! Thank you for a continued great experience for my family. Honestly, it just depends on when you go. The last few times I haven't been super impressed with the service. Pretty sure, we got someone brand new because she really didn't know the menu. We waited for 15-20 minutes to put in a sushi order and then needed up just getting annoyed and placing both our sushi order and food order. Our food came out fast and she forgot about our sushi order so we ended up finally getting it. I swear every time we go here kids are just running around our table, but it is kid friendly so I do understand, but the food was fine. It was good portions. We did sit at the tables by the bar just for faster service and it was not that this time. read more

The sushi roll I got looked nothing like the photo. Tempura batter was WAY too heavy and greasy. Our server dropped off the food and never talked to us again, even though he walked by the table 5 times. He even dropped something off AT our table but never asked how things were. I was a little skeptical about coming here because of the reviews but when I walked in we were greeted nicely and escorted to our table . We were sitting in front of the sushi bar and everything looked clean . Our service was quick and polite . Our Food looked great but most importantly it was Delicious!! Taste was just right and was prepared to perfection. I am particularly special about my sushi and I can assure you this was one of the best sushi's I had . Visited this location today for birthday lunch for my daughter and it was not the best experience. After being seated, we waited for an extended period of time for a server to visit our station. She then proceeded to take our drink and food order. The Hibachi cook began our station's presentation and food was being plated before the server even returned with the drinks. Couldn't believe it took that long to prepare some fountain drinks. When the server brought the drinks, she stated that they were out of ginger ale and substituted my daughter's drink with water without even asking what she preferred. Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!! We had my daughter's 13th birthday dinner/celebration here and it was 24 of us. 12 kids and 12 adults with 2 Hibachi tables. The manager Roy was so accommodating to our group. Roy put our group in the very back room which was almost like a private area. We were allowed to hang an 8x8 step and repeat banner along with the added red carpet. They even allowed us to bring our own cake AND they were nice enough to keep in on the kitchen until we were ready for it! Dinner was AMAZING, the chefs were very entertaining; especially the chef at the kids table. The servers were very attentive, no waits for refills and most importantly no mistakes with orders. Our daughter and her friends had the BEST time! In fact, we closed the place down ... yes Roy and team were waiting for us to clear out so they could clean up and leave!! lol Not one time did they rush us and for that we're so appreciative. We come to this one because the service is typically better than the one in Buford. To start - Christian you are awesome! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If it wasn't for the poor service I received by our waitress, I believe her name was Diana , but she didn't give us her name. I just remember her inability to perform her job. We never received a refill, my plate was dirty from some grease or oil that fell from the ceiling. No biggie, I simply asked for a new one. More than 10 minutes went by and our waitress was no where to be found. Eventually when Christian came to begin our lovely dinner , he gave me a new plate. My boyfriend ordered chicken and steak - there was a mixup and he did not receive his chicken, no big deal as he had almost finished his steak when he realized. I advised our waitress that I wanted it off the bill. Did she listen ? No. She came back to the table and said , "well they're gonna just make it so you might as well take it." Never have I been so displeased with our service. It felt as though Christian was our waiter and chef ! Give that man a raise ! To recap - Do come here , the food is delicious . Nope - took over an hour past our reservation time to even get a glass of water! Chefs are hilarious and the food is tasty but it ends there. There service has GOT to improve. You would think after a manager coming over to apologize for the poor experience they would have offered something. Waiter lost our check and had to retake our entire order after the meal. We've been to this location several times and it's always a great experience! It's great entertainment and it's so much food, we always end up taking some home. The price is a little high compared to other hibachi restaurants but the quality makes it worth it. I highly recommend this place for a date night or taking the family out for some fun! read more
