Steamed coconut greens and jerk cauliflower
Taelyr R.

Kann absolutely lives up to the hype. The food is delicious and remains true to authentic Haitian food while also innovating and creating unique dishes and flavor profiles. I had the Griyo, plantain brioche, steamed greens, jerk cauliflower, and baked Haiti. The space is also gorgeous. Light and airy while remaining opulent. The service was great, Genevieve was my favorite! Sadly, there were a few details that were missed. My pacing between courses was a bit longer than ideal and I had a bit of Griyo left over and asked for it to be boxed but it didn't make it to my bag. Disappointing for my midnight snack but not a deal breaker. I would definitely go back!

Pork coopa and the peanut greens

We had such an amazing time at kann! They have excellent service, was truly exceptional. We sat at the chefs counter, which was really cool. Everyone was so locked in, it was honestly kind of beautiful to watch how well coordinated they are were, bravo. Food was amazing, from the bread to the entree all the way to the desserts. I was delighted that I could order what ever I wanted and it be gluten free by default. My favorites were the peanut greens and the pork coppa, of the savory. Spicy for sure, won't be a 5 star meal for you if you cannot tolerate spice. The desserts were to die for, and I wish I could've taken more home. We got the baked haiti and the ice cream mosaic, and definitely get both if you're stuck between them. Perfectly balanced rum cake with a smooth meringue and what amounted to basically an ice-cream sandwich.. it was the perfect way to end the evening.

Wow everything is amazing I can't believe I never went here when I lived in Portland. Waitstaff is amazing, vibes are immaculate, and most importantly food is incredible. Best dessert of my life and I don't even eat dessert.

Cheers to special occasions! I think I had to wait a month in advance for a reservation. I really enjoyed the vegan options, specifically the jerk cauliflower and plantain salad. I definitely liked the bean and rice because you get a 2-in-1 deal. The peanut creamed greens were delicious. I enjoyed the stew too. The pineapple cake and chocolate mouse were delicious. I'd definitely go for appetizers and desserts in the future.

Griyo Twice Cooked Pork

I made a reservation on a Sunday night to celebrate a birthday dinner. The check in process was seamless and we were guided to our table promptly. From the artistic paintings to the bountiful greenery, the interior of the restaurant was bright and colorful. The open kitchen made the area feel more engaging as well. One drawback was the acoustics in the dining room. The hardwood flooring and the arches on the ceiling seemed to make the noise level more prominent. We were sitting in the back corner of the restaurant so we were still able to talk to each other across the table but it might be more difficult if you were sitting closer to the center. The service felt posh but a little pushy when trying to get our party to order more additions to round out the meal; I felt like we already ordered multiple items for our party size. We were advised that we needed to order everything all at once. The menu was explained as family-style and items were served when ready. I'm not too familiar with Haitian/Caribbean/West African cuisine but all the dishes had a unique and fragrant flavor profile. I appreciated the use of spices that elevated the dishes. The akra had a nice kick to it but I wouldn't necessarily call any of the dishes spicy. Our favorites were the smoked beef rib, steelhead, and akra. The griyo twice cooked pork was underwhelming because the pork seemed too dry for our liking. The other pork dish, pork coppa, tasted a tad bit bland compared to the other options as well. The epis butter paired with the warm plantain brioche was delectable but we were able resist ordering another serving due to the price for two small muffin-sized brioche buns.

3rd visit to Kann and it still does not disappoint. As with my previous visits, the food is exceptional, bold flavors and just the right level of heat that truly leaves its mark on Portland's dining scene. The menu evolves, which keeps things exciting, but the staples remain for a reason, and I love seeing what new dishes join them. This visit, though, was really about the service. A small 15-minute overlap with our reservation could have been a hiccup, but instead, it was met with genuine hospitality. A glass of bubbles, an extra starter, and even a dessert to go, simple gestures that went a long way. It was a reminder of what great service is meant to feel like. Kann remains firmly in my top five restaurants in Portland, and tonight was a perfect reminder of why. Come. Taste. Make a reservation. Enjoy.

If you haven't heard, there is a lot of buzz around this spot - a James Beard award winner & named one of the top 50 restaurants in the US in 2025 - you definitely could use a reservation! They fill up fast! If possible, reserve the chef's table, but prepare for your feet to not touch the ground from the high stool chair. When you walk in from the dark hallway, it opens up to a bright and beautiful space. The service is top tier! Even the food runners explain dishes in detail! I could rave about every dish and how its elements came together, but you should really go try it - there was nothing we did not love. Menu does change. My favorite was the pork griyo, comes together so well.

Had an amazing birthday dinner! Service was great, food was delicious and very filling. We were too full for dessert so we will be back again. It is pretty loud in there when the restaurant is full, but overall bright and welcoming.

The dessert. Something about Haiti? I don't know but I thought it was gonna be harder. It was like a mousse. Very good.

Saaaaaallllltyy. Salty like I just got proven wrong after arguing for a long time. Salty like I told everyone something was gonna happen and it didn't. My fish was that salty. I got the seared hiramasa to start with. This wasn't salty but was actually perfect and not only really good but perhaps the most unique thing I've tasted in a really long time. Apples and fish. Who'd a thunk those would go so well together? Then the peanut creamed greens. These ain't ya mammy's collard greens honey. These is somethin' else entirely. Y'all better brace your tastebuds. We're two for two so far. The only deduction is for the steelhead, which was a bit too salty for me. There's just no base to go with it. And your only option for rice seems to be the large portion for two people with the kidney beans. An ice cream scoop size of white rice would have rounded out this dish and I could have eaten the rest of the pepper confit that goes with it. Aside from that, what can I say'? This place serves complex flavors using a well spoken staff who engage you to create a dining experience. It could be a great way to treat yourself or a date, or it could also be an introvert's worst nightmare. But introverts still gotta eat, right?

Kann - Worth the Hype! Kann absolutely lives up to its reputation. The flavors are bold, creative, and beautifully presented -- you can feel the Haitian inspiration in every bite. The service is polished but warm, and the live-fire kitchen adds amazing energy. It's not cheap, but totally worth it for a special night out. It's noisy so be prepared to talk loud. Pro tip: make a reservation early -- this spot books up fast!

Now this was an awesome collab from @bryanfurmanbarbeque with @atoboynyc and @Kanin restaurant in Portland and tomorrow is the last day. There was chicken, ribs, and galbi... the meats are so tender, and those fatty parts are so succulent and it just all falls off the bone like nothing. So flavorful that charcoal taste adds to it and the sauces are just amazing. I really enjoyed the sides of cornbread, beans, and kimchi macaroni. It was just the best. Watch it all down with that beautiful slushy.

Smoked beets

We finally got our reservation and had our 7th anniversary dinner. Friendly staff welcomed us, our reservation was early side, so I saw many elderly folks and family customers. Our next table had a toddler, who was so adorable. Ambiance was casual yet staffs work hard to keep customers happy. They treat us equally, any ages, gender and ethnicity. They don't show any snobby atmosphere that many highly acclaimed restaurants do... love it! Food - everything was great. We tried smoked beets salad, braised pork with plantain chips, fried egg plants, smoked duck, closed with Haitian coconut pineapple cake. Loved to watch Gregory was cooking with staff through the open kitchen. I will highly recommend this place and we will be back again.

The menu: well crafted, felt like leather

KANN officially leveled up my palate and made for an unforgettable dining experience, especially for my first time visiting Portland. We enjoyed the warm sweet potato bread, Akra (crispy taro fritters), griyo (twice-cooked pork), and the coffee-rubbed New York strip, every dish was outstanding. We also enjoyed a couple of thoughtfully crafted libations, including a traditional take on an Old Fashioned and another made with tequila, both of which paired beautifully with the meal. The atmosphere really completed the experience. The lighting was perfect, bright enough to read the menu, yet warm and low enough to create an intimate, inviting vibe. The space encourages conversation and has a welcoming, almost family-style feel that makes you want to stay awhile. You can truly feel the care and intention behind both the food and the environment. If you're visiting Portland, this restaurant is well worth the reservation. I would absolutely return.

Silly question I know but are the seats cushioned?

Yes!

Are we able to bring outside food in (specifically cake)? Have a reservation for a birthday dinner and would like to know if we can bring it with us or if we need to save it for later.

Per their website: Q: Does Kann allow guests to bring in their own desserts? A: No, no outside food is allowed at the restaurant.

What are prices like for the main dishes?

I thought prices were on the high side. But worth trying

How early can I arrive for my reservation?

We arrived a few minutes early and had to wait outside. There is no inside waiting area. They came out and got us when our table was ready.

Is there a dress code? I was hoping to wear shorts especially during summer season.

You can dress casual unless it's your special occasion. I would definitely not recommend shorts , T-shirts and flipflops.

Is there a price difference for seating at chef counter versus community table for 2 people? Does chef counter dining cost more?

No, all seating arrangements order off of the same menu.

Does kann take walk in's?

They do have limited walk-in availability; however, you may have to go right when they open. Usually, there are reservations that open up during the week on Resy from cancellations that you can snag!

Are the reservations always released on the 2nd of the month or did I really miss a reservation for 2 in May already?

Reservations are released on the 2nd of each month.

Do you have to pay in advance to secure a reservation using RESY?

There are no fees when booking a reservation via RESY.

1) What does it take to get a reservation for two? 2) Do you recommend booking separate one person…

"March reservations will be released on February 2nd at 12pm PDT." They update their website w/ this info on the Contact Us page. It seems like you have to reserve exactly at (or maybe even minutes before) the scheduled time to get a good spot. I… Read more

Do you have table service or order at cpunter?

It's table service. If you sit at the chef's table area (bar overlooking the kitchen) then the serve takes your order from where you are sitting.

What odes a dinner for two typically run?

My boyfriend and I spent about $180-220 for us two, including tip. That's with a drink each, plenty of food and two desserts. I find it's more "affordable" if I go with a group of 4 or 5.

Is there a corkage fee?

Our corkage fee is $40

How do you get a reservation? Seems always booked and no indication of when new dates will be posted.

We open reservations a month in advance via RESY. For instance, December openings will become available on November 2nd @ noon PST.

What is the dress code?

There is no dress code, but most guests opt for dress business casual attire.

Are the reservation dates released for the next month on the 2nd or 15th of the prior month? Is it a midnight PST release?

Hey Seth, reservations go live on Resy on the 2nd of each month @ 12 PM PST for the following month.

Can I purchase a gift card to Kann?

As far as I know, yes they do have gift cards. reservations are extremely tight. They are booked up through September. Be sure to call early,

My childhood memories include saving my allowance to purchase griot from a Haitian lady's house on Fridays, with the assistance of a neighbor who spoke her language. My first taste of griot occurred when I was 11 years old. I felt compelled to share this background information to establish my credentials in assessing the quality of Haitian cuisine.
