This review is for Crystal. I've had many deep tissue massages (called "Recovery Massage" at Kanna) coast to coast and think that Crystal is one of the best. I love strong pressure for my back and shoulders to work out knots and tightness (being hunched over a keyboard all day will do that to you) but usually get disappointed because the massage therapists typically go too light. Crystal took the time to listen to my requests and applied great pressure and really helped me work out the tension. I go see her once or twice a month and it's made a huge positive difference- no more cricks and tight spots! Tip: I find it's best to go after a workout or yoga (get the blood flowing). Drink lots of water before and after your massage to help pump the toxins out and feel better. Also, you may feel sore the next day if you get deep pressure but that means the knots are out and muscles are loose! Also, Tiffany (the owner) is super nice and always a pleasure to book appointments with. read more

I just had the most amazing experience here - again! I always get massages here but this time was over the top. My first time services: Four Handed Bliss - WOW! Crystal and Tiffany blew my mind. They were totally in sync and delivered the perfect pressure to my achy muscles. I loved how they seemed to move with the music! Even more blissful. Facial - my face was glowing afterwards and 4 days later still soft as a baby's butt. Infrared Sauna - I didn't think I could hang long with this one but I surprised myself! Its definitely cleansing! I've been to Kanna about 5 times now and I love it. Every massage therapist I've had there has been able to provide a very firm, deep-tissue massage for me in just the way that I like it. The entire spa is clean and soft and coloured in dark brown earth tones. Tiffany is always wonderful over the phone and in person. The selection of tea is a great touch and an extremely relaxing way to end an already relaxing massage. Allison was FANTASTIC. I really liked her 'Posture' therapy as she was massaging me. Usually when I have someone work on my neck/shoulders & work out the knots, I'm sore the next day. I booked a girls' massage afternoon for myself, the mother-in-law and the sister-in-law. Sister-in-law and I got the deep tissue massage (sister-in-law requested only her back be massaged). Mother-in-law got some kind of foot treatment. Since our appointments were slightly staggered, I booked the sauna for them and myself while waiting for the massages. Sister-in-law was very pleased with her back-only deep tissue massage. How good was it? When she came out of the room, she had that dazed, time-of-her-life, crazy-sex hair. Mother-in-law was also pleased with the foot treatment she received. She has crazy problems with her feet and they hurt all the time. My massage was good, although not great. I attribute that to the inhumane level of stress in my life, rising to the level of human rights violations, creating a knotted, rubber ball filled with rocks-type situation in my back. And I have carpal tunnel and the stupid office manager at my work does not provide me with a back up typist when my assistant is out. This means I am forced to type against doctor's orders. I can suffer from permanent nerve damage and the stupid office manager DOES NOTHING. I smell a workers comp claim in the future. I need massages more regularly. The sauna was wonderful. Loved it. Want to buy one for my parents. If I had access to a sauna, I would wrap myself in plastic wrap to "melt off" those pesky love handles. I think I will buy a sauna. read more

I went to Kanna Spa on a Saturday night after I took a final for school. It was totally last minute, but they accommodated me. It's in an industrial area and I would have never known it was there! When I arrived, I was like "I am I in the right spot?" I called the spa and she came out to get me! Nice! The lobby has a great set up with the music, lighting, and little touches. The receptionist was super friendly and offered me tea while I filled out paper work. My massage therapist (I cannot remember her name) was great! I was drooling (gross, right?!) I am petite at 4'11" and 100lbs so pressure is always important to me. Most therapists are either too soft or too hard. My therapist was just right by using something in the middle. They had a heated table which was awesome! She used an eye mask that smelled so good and totally put me at ease. She took her time and spent enough time on all areas of my body. I didn't use the other services, but they were offered to me. I didn't use them because all I wanted to do was sleep!! It was super clean as well! This is not a full spa like Burke Williams, but the customer service and quality of services is just as great. It's a cute little place! If you are looking for a great massage and don't have too much time or are looking for a quick pampering Kanna Spa is a great choice! read more

Wonderful find! I scheduled my bf for a 90 min Recovery Massage & Hot Stones with Tiffany about a year ago. He gets massages regularly but has never been wowed by anyone. Tiffany is the first person that impressed him. He & I both highly recommend her. She's great for deep tissue (she may be tiny but she packs a serious punch.) I refer to her as Dr. Tiffany for all the times she has healed my broken body (trying foolish things like boot camp & marathons.) I now give gift certificates to my friends for their bdays/weddings, etc. to see Tiffany. She is amazing. Overview: Location - right off the freeway, lots of parking, quiet office building. Spa - quiet, calm, CLEAN, cute & relaxing. Prices - Prices are reasonable and the quality is unbelievable! $95 for 65 min, $135 for 90 min & $175 for 120 minutes. I absolutely love this place! Julie is my favorite therapist. I try to see her a couple times a year. I've made it a tradition to go on my birthday. Julie is very spiritual, intuitive and has amazing energy. I suffer from chronic neck and lower back pain and I've tried accupunture and chiropractors and nothing can relieve the pain, except for Julie. Believe me when I say she has healing hands. She channels her positive energy into my pain points to relieve all the tension/pain. Although in a strange location, the shabby chic decor is warm and inviting. Don't let the plain office exterior fool you. There is a beautiful spa inside that treats you like royalty. I sent an e-mail to Tiffany asking for openings for a massage. I wanted to spoil my fiance with a much requested back rub. Tiffany was happy to accommodate for a massage for my fiance and my request for a separate foot rub for me. Things That Were Awesome: +++Unlikely location means you have actual parking space. The location is also close to where I live. Double plus points. +++You step into a classy spa when you cross through those office doors. It's the sort of spa setting you'd see in a fancy hotel. +++Kelly did my Triple Threat Foot massage. I was THIS close to passing out. The warm mat, the scented treatments, the foot massage. Yeah I was in heaven. Things That Were Not So Awesome: ---Bathroom is shared with the rest of the office building. It's not as awesome and zen calm as the spa. ---The mini sauna they had was broken during my visit. Tiffany promised it would be fixed by next week. It looks like a great little sauna and I wanted to try it. Yep, I can easily see myself being a regular at Kanna Spa. I visited Kanna Spa for the first time last weekend. I emailed and filled out an online request for an appointment. About an hour later I received a prompt response via phone call and scheduled a sauna session and 90 min massage same day. I love this place! Very professional and kind people and the ambiance was neat and clean! She takes the time to listen to what's going on with you and delivers what you need. I like a deep, hard massage because I'm usually so "jacked up" when I make appointments. For a very petite person she can really DIG if you need her too. I call her elbows "ninja elbows" because she can sneak in the "deep" in deep tissue massage. The place is clean, super relaxing, and very reasonably priced. Don't sleep on Kanna spa and a massage from Tiffany. Treat yourself to Kanna Spa...you won't be disappointed! read more

I can't say enough good things about Kanna Spa and Tiffany. I've come twice - once for a prenatal massage when I was 6 months pregnant and just recently as a relaxing afternoon. Both times I was thoroughly impressed with the ambiance, the friendly staff, offers of tea and water before and after. Most importantly though, for the price, Tiffany is the best masseur I've ever been to. She does a fantastic job of working out any kinks you may have while keeping the whole experience gentle and relaxing. There were definitely times I couldn't tell how she was doing what she was, and it felt like I had 2 sets of hands on. For prenatal she was perfect - always making sure I was comfortable and well supported whilst working out all my pregnancy aches and pains. As long as I live in this area, this is the only place I will consider for a massage! read more

Met with Daniela for the first time last week for a 60 minute massage. I was desperate for an appointment because of increasing pain in my right hip after I started hiking 9 months ago. When I went to Kanna Spa for massage, I basically left it up to the therapist to massage as required. Daniela worked quietly and intensely which I appreciated and did an an amazing job identifying the cause. Got my very first prenatal massage by Alicia. I felt like I was floating on a cloud after the massage. Unfortunately, for me she has set the bar pretty high and all of the prenatal massages that I've gotten from other therapists at other locations leave me feeling disappointed because, it just does not compare. Alicia, unfortunately only works one day a month at Kanna and I haven't been able to make another appointment with her since. I've tried multiple times, but they never seem to know when she plans to work again. I find this a little strange and a bit frustrating. read more

Absolute best spa service I've ever had! I visited for the first time on Monday and was immediately put at ease by their kind and professional staff. I saw Alicia for my massage and she worked wonders on my back. What I appreciated the most was that she listened to my needs and diligently worked on the target areas via deep tissue massage. I felt like jello afterwards and almost fell asleep. I also highly recommend the infrared sauna. I normally can't handle a sauna (too hot for me) but this was tolerable and enjoyable. Do 30 min if you're a newbie like me. They also give you tea, which you get to select yourself from their vast array in the lobby, to enjoy in the sauna. The staff at Kanna was awesome. I got a great massage there and am looking forward to my next one. When I first dropped by to check the place out, I was given the full tour, which definitely eased my anxieties about visiting a new place, especially as a lone female. I've accidentally signed up for appointments at the wrong kind of massage spa here in San Mateo, and was so grateful to find in Kanna such a top-notch, reputable place with such a caring, knowledgeable staff. The outside of the building may seem deceptive. Don't be put off - it's in a little office park. You would never know this hidden gem is hiding there, but once inside, it feels ultra luxe, and ultra relaxing... My favorite part is the meditation room. I like to go there just before & after my massages for a few moments of quiet reflexion, and to let the affects of the massage fully sink in. Someday soon, I'm aching to try the sauna. I have to wait a few more months because I'm currently pregnant, and that level of heat would be risky for the baby, but the sauna is part of the reason I chose Kanna. Kanna spa I should have kept to massages only But I chose a facial. $95.00 I paid but was quoted $75.00 when I called. Expected more from a professional place. Felt the place not clean. It was stated they used what was left by the previous client /attendant . I got locked out going to outside restroom. No one came for 20 minutes to open door. Should have a buzzer or something. I occurred a lot of hiccups for this spa and would not recommend. read more

I have been going to Kanna Spa since it was still sharing a back room in a beauty salon in downtown San Mateo. I received a lot of massages in my lifetime, and I have to say that Tiffany is up there in terms of one of the best therapists I ever came across. Yes, the 65 min massage may be a bit pricey compared to your regular spa, but trust me, IT IS TOTALLY WORTH IT! Kanna Spa has moved to another location and the place now looks fantastic. It is more spacious, very relaxing, and nicely decorated. In terms of the massage itself, I like how she caters personally to each client's problems and takes very good care to provide the perfect pressure at problematic muscle areas. If you enjoy coloring books for some reason, then you are in for a treat because she will hand you a drawing of the human muscle and asks you to color in the problematic areas before each appointment. To me this is a pretty efficient way to communicate to her where your problem is without trying to gesture and describe it to the therapist. After the massage, she allows you to take your time to recuperate instead of cattle-herding you out for the next client. This is pretty nice touch, but as her business becomes more popular, we shall see how this will be managed. As I am writing this, I have the urge to make another appointment with Tiffany. If you want to treat yourself to an awesome massage experience, I highly recommend this place. read more

Wow. Let me just say I booked multiple appointments for a bachelorette spa day and all 5 of us ladies left relaxed, feeling pampered, and I so wish I lived here so I could revisit the experience!! From the beginning, I called and spoke to a very professional woman (can't remember who) and after explaining to nature of the day and what I was hoping to accomplish, she put together an absolutely divine package for all of us women. My mom was having some health issues and I mentioned that I wanted to make sure everything done was ok; checking in with her throughout, she was the most relaxed I've ever seen her! When we arrived the front entrance/waiting area is so quaint and welcoming, you feel transported to another world. They bring you back to a darkened, quiet room and there we begin our services. They were able to accommodate all 5 of us with massages, facials, the steam room and the relaxation room and from literally everyone's experience, we felt absolutely, more than satisfied, over the top amazing when we were done. She took me to this place, where I was greeted at the desk by a gorgeous woman by the name of Tiffany. In addition to setting us up for the massage, she ended up being my therapist for the 65 minute deep massage. Apparently my back was so stiff that Tiffany was a bit reluctant to go hard, since it seemed to be a lot of work. And though I noticed the difference before and after the session, I figured that I would probably need another run at this again to work out all the kinks and what not. She's responsive and very accommodating on short notices, which I greatly appreciate. Plus, the warmth in her voice makes me happy, like a soft breeze on a nice and sunny day. The place is quiet and tranquil and the decor absolutely beautiful. All the massage therapists are very skillful, adjusting to your needs and preferences. There's a therapist who specializes in prenatal massages. One important thing that stands out to me is how they always ask if there are any areas to avoid. I have an old injury that still hurts if too much pressure is applied, and they are careful to not cause any discomfort to me. Also, I'm never cringing from any pain, but rather, I have to struggle to stay awake as I'm sent flying into relaxation. I always end my journey with a lovely cup of chocolate mint tea.
