I hate to say it but pass on this place!!!! The fish is NOT fresh, I almost didn't finish my meal but I had paid so much I didn't want to burn money and trash the food. It's also extremely over priced!!! I don't mind paying more for quality food but for the price they charge per roll and for 7 prices of sashimi I expected the fish to not smell and taste old. Talk about a let down. I would have been better off throwing everything away because I actually felt sick after eating here. The wait staff is rude and snobby. Save yourself the money and stomach pain and go somewhere else! There are plenty of sushi restaurants in town that serve higher quality fish with out the attitude or digestive issues! read more

Amazing sushi! I came here for a friend's birthday and we ordered a lot of plates. We got the special ahi tuna which was absolutely amazing and fresh. The orgasm roll was also a winner. Just left Kanpai after 30+ minutes with no service. Servers walked past our table many times but no communication. 3 servers on, not very busy but we were completely ignored. Last straw was one of the servers looked at our table, looked at me then went and talked to her friend at the bar. I was sadly served cold miso soup sans the handy large spoon this evening. It also took over 20 min to arrive at the table. (the restaurant was not full by any means) We ordered the albacore nigiri and was served the sashimi which ended up being a $17 unexpected charge on our bill. Have lived in Bend over 25 years and this was our first time here at the suggestion of our adult children. I am not much of a sushi lover but my husband is so I tried their California roll and it was good but the Dragon roll was delicious. I ordered the tenderloin and it was very good, perfectly cooked. Service was good. It is a bit on the speedy side even though we started at Happy Hour. I would bring in your own wine as corkage fee is $10.00 and a glass alone in Happy Hour is $9.09. Awful service. We have dined here several times but next time I will go somwwhere else. Service was awful. 10 minutes before we were even acknowledged by anyone to be seated. Another 15 minuyes before we were given menus and water. And no all of the tables were not full. An hour and a half later we finally received all of our order. I have loved Kanpai for years and I always come away feeling good we came in. The fish is always FRESH as can be, simply melts in ones mouth and the creative specials are always a joy to sample. The Happy Hour is always such a sweet deal ( try the soft shelled crabs and compare the price at Kanpai to any other sushi bar around ) and we love to sit at the bar and chat about fish species and the preparation of a certain roll with the sushi chefs. I eat sushi all over the world and the prices at Kanpai are as fair as they come and the food is simply fantastic! It is our ' go to ' place when we eat out. We are moving to Chile but when back in town, it's a stop at Kanpai! read more

Hands down the best sushi in Bend and we have been to all of them. Orgasm roll is just incredible perfection. Salmon and hamachi always fresh and buttery. Every time we try to eat sushi at other places, we end up feeling dissatisfied. Love the remodel ambiance as well. This place has never disappointed until tonight. I had some friends visiting from town and I talked Kan pai up super big caking it "pricey but worth the money". Boy we're we mistaken. Our check came out priced over what the website marketed, and even more importantly our ramen came through with hardly a single sip of broth in them. No exaggerations. It was As if somebody had taken a straw and slurped all the ramen out the bottom and then they threw it in a Togo container and sent it out. When we called back we were told our option was to drive back over and pick up more broth..... those bowls are $18... and we were charged 19% gratuity, for takeout. I have been here multiple times and really want to like this restaurant. The sushi is good, not great but the service is awful. I can deal with not having my water glass filled, not being asked for a second glass of wine, and not having chopsticks. I draw the line when the owner or manager tells the sushi chef that is making our roll in front of us at the bar to take off a piece of fish because we are "making money." Just had a horrible experience here...went in to sit down and have a nice dinner, but the restaurant was busy and i simply decided i wanted to order to-go because the servers looked busy. Went up and asked to see a menu to order food to take home as to not be a burden, and a blonde woman waitress was very rude and told me to leave her alone because she was busy and to go wait at the door because it was so "busy" and they were expecting a 12 top soon....well that 12 top was not there yet....so sorry but i have been a waitress in fine dining for my entire adult life and it was so unprofessional. But since i wanted to try their sushi, i went and waited at the front. Not only did they not even offer me a menu, they told me i could not even place a to-go order because they were so busy with this expected 12 top......so they are seating people, but when someone wants to order to-go which is easier on the server that is not okay? The food might look good but the service is HORRIBLE....go somewhere with nice servers, not a blonde woman who is simply too busy to be kind and give any kind of service....as i said left without even being offered a menu, never going back here read more

I have to say, I could not have had a better experience - well maybe if they comped my meal, but why would they? The staff was warm, friendly, knowledgeable and professional. One of the best spots in town . . . the secret is the cooked apps and entrees are just as good, if not better, than than the rolls and sushi. Try the Broiled Tomatoes or the Filet (maybe the best steak in town). As for the complaints about pricing, fresh, local, and high quality typically are always going to be more expensive than "Sysco". You do get what you pay for . . . prices are far from egregious. read more

Kanpai was our favorite sushi stop in Bend for years. They had artistic flare and flavor! As of late, not so much! The staff and food have gone downhill. I don't know what happened to all the lovley staff that had been there for years, but its just not the same. Some of the sushi chefs look unenthused to be there. Ate here last night for the first time. Pretty mediocre food. The rice was way undercooked - hard, chewy - and it made the nigiri awful. Imagine a tender piece of fish on a bed of pasty rubber grit. Kanpai is a westside Bend sushi restaurant serving a good selection of unique Japanese inspired cuisine. For starters, those who don't live in Bend, OR. Overall, eating in Bend is russian roulette. This is NOT a town with a culture of attentive service or a passionate dedication towards serving great food. People come here for the magnificent natural experience, the business community is a haphazard assortment of people who would never be able to compete in a city like New York or Seattle. That said, the service at Kanpai is still surprisingly incompetent. They seem to act as if you are bothering them by showing up. Worse still, the ambience is horrible. The place looks cozy from the outside, but you will soon be assailed by loud reggae music upon entry. (I kid you not) The dining area is adequate but little attention is paid towards making it anything but useable. The prices would not be unreasonable if one were to receive exceptional service and superior food, but this is not the case. The food seemed to be all well-prepared and was fresh & tasty. Some of the combinations seem random and are not culturally accurate. For instance, we had a Spicy Scallop roll in which the Jalapeno spice completely overwhelmed the roll so that the delicate Scallop (which was of good quality) was barely detectible. Hot tea served to us was lukewarm and tasteless. In almost every case, anyone who has eaten Japanese food in any major west-coast city will find Kanpai to be mediocre. If you are in the area and want sushi/sashimi rolls, try Mio Sushi in the Old Mill District. It may not be the world's best, but we have found it to be the better of Bend's Japanese offerings. Their service, location, prices and tea are all better than Kanpai. read more

Nice ambience and good sushi. I've eaten here quite a few times but agree with previous reviews that said the service is awful. It is always slow but the last time I ate there the server brought us the wrong roll. My bf is a vegetarian and instead of the roll he ordered, he was given a raw tuna roll. The waiter asked if we wanted it anyway and I said sure. She apologized and later brought the vegetarian roll that was ordered. I tried a piece of the raw tuna roll & I'm sure it was fine, but I'm just not a fan of raw tuna in my sushi. Then, what really shocked me was that the server charged us for the raw tuna roll that she brought us by mistake. When I questioned the fact that we didn't order it and I only tried one piece of it she replied, "well you said you still wanted it." I guess that is true, but previous experiences in dining when the wrong item is brought, it has always been a complimentary item and I had no idea she was expecting us to pay for something we hadn't even ordered. She ended up taking it off our check but was really rude about it. read more

Dinner for two, Wednesday, May 21. Very empty restaurant with exceptionally slow service and snotty waitress. Our sake and tiny seaweed salad were delivered promptly. We ordered just a few items from the sushi menu and were kept waiting nearly 30 minutes. The bus girl came to clear our plates because she thought we should've been done but in truth we hadn't even started. The waitress, alerted by the bus girl, returned to our to argue with us that we hadn't been waiting long. We paid for our sake and miniature salad and left, never to return again. This use to be our favorite splurge in town, but sadly things have changed. I have never written a review, but when your favorite place takes a dip and you still pay over $80 it's worth writing a review. We would always order the omakase ( chef's special) and they recently changed the pricing to the top tier $90 a person price, so we tried to order off the menu. We started with oysters, and then tried the chefs choice sashimi. I think what we really use to love was the perfect pairing of sauces with fresh fish. Both orders left us unsatisfied and underwhelmed. The fish is fresh and that is amazing, but when you use to be spoiled with one of the best experiences in bend, it is a little crushing to have the experience we just had. To give the staff credit they recognized us from before and tried to make our experience more enjoyable, even after they told us we would not be able to order the same way we use to. We stumbled across Kampai while driving through Bend. The only good things I can say are that the food quality is very good and the ambiance is nice. Other than that, it's all downhill. The service is so poor that it's amazing this place is still in business. We were seated immediately, but didn't see our waitress (Jamie) for almost 10 minutes. After she took our drink order, it took another 20 minutes before she came back to take our order. While our order was being prepared, we were asked if we could be moved to a smaller table so that they could take a larger party at our table. That was no problem, except that after we moved, our waitress completely forgot about us. When she finally rediscovered us, she was very rude. Another 30 minutes and the food finally arrived. Took 15 minutes to eat, another 30 minutes to get check and pay. All and all, horrible service from the wait staff. We had to flag down a different server (twice) to get our check and pay. Note that this entire place has roughly 15 tables in the entire place and there were four servers and the service was still horrible. Our server was distracted with larger parties. While the food was good, I'd never touch this place again due to the service. read more

We went to Kanpai on a Saturday night, got seated at a quiet little pub table in the corner and began what was to become, a tantalizing epicurean adventure. Hard part was, not ordering everything on the well presented menu. Even the martini's were great, although I couldn't see the bartender...where were they making those drinks?? Anyway Kanpai is a must stop anytime we are in Bend. The sushi is extremely fresh and beautifully presented. Service was attentive and not overbearing. The polyn(asian) decor tasteful and warm. My suggestion to anyone who has had an issue with service ~ Go Back. Restaurants are functioning organisms that evolve and grow. The wheels were greased and working in sync. read more

cute little place. really packed when we got there fairly early on saturday evening. so we sat at the bar, rather than wait for a table. ok,,,,, so the food. the appetizers were great. we had a tuna poke and some other type of cold fish with cucumber salad that were amazing. sadly they were out of the hamachi collar. the yellowtail sashimi was great.... the rolls were good, not great but good. the spicy tuna had too much spicy sauce, you couldnt taste the fish. and we got another roll that had jalapenos in it, and that was too overwhelming too. the other food is definetly worthy of a return by itself. everything was tasty, and creative, though maybe not authentic. now the bad side. the service was HORRIBLE! our waiter was frantic. couldnt be bothered to take our drink orders, answer any questions, even just say hello. mind you this is on a 200 dollar ticket. and why? there are only about 13 tables in this restaurant and there were at least two other waiters. and it is not as though we were in some huge rush to get in and out. it is saturday night and there are four of us. we would like to relax and enjoy our meal, and that usually means i would like to at least have some water to choke down my food, let alone a glass of wine. but maybe that is too much to ask for. well, the sushi chefs were really nice! read more

This is definitely not a 'family-friendly' restaurant. The sushi was great, but the calamari was too breaded. It's a nice place for couples or a hang out place with friends, but don't think of bringing any kids. Our waitress was not sensitive to the fact that we had brought our kids (she was not the nice lady with glasses or the other one with tattoos). She even whispered something on our way out about being more patient (rude rude rude). We got there around 8p and didn't eat our sushi until about 9:15p. I have NEVER been to a restaurant where it took about an hr to get our sushi! Food is great, but wish we had one of the nicer waitresses. Definitely not a pleasant experience. read more
