I do not know where to start with this restaurant. From the minute you walk in the staff, I just super nice and friendly and very willing to help once we sat down. They were very quick to bring over the menu to offer drinks and appetizers. the food was beyond exceptional, everything had a unique taste and was wonderfully prepared. This place is conveniently located near this pretty well-lit park in downtown Boca Raton! To be honest, we had a longer wait due to a technological issue. There was a delay in receiving the texts about being next in line and we were told they would call us, but never did. However, we decided to wait a bit longer and kept blaming it on the system. They did apologize nonetheless though. Yet, the hostesses mentioned it has happened several times before with previous clients. My friend invited me out to eat at Kanpai because she bought a Groupon for the restaurant. Kanpai offers a variety of Japanese cooked dishes, sushi, and Yakiniku, or Japanese BBQ. If you get a seat at the sushi bar, their rolls are offered on floating boats in a little river, and you can just grab the rolls that you want. My friend and I ate the Yakiniku, which is where you can grill different meats at your table. We shared the Combo A meal, which costs $50. It includes appetizers for two: miso soup, white rice, crispy gyoza, and an array of side dishes to season your meats with. The BBQ items include Spicy Chicken, Bulgogi, Spicy Pork, Ribeye Steak, and vegetables. My favorite meats was the Bulgogi and the ribeye steak. I found that the spicy marinade on the chicken and pork was a little too heavy for me; it made it spicier and saltier than I preferred. You could just lay the other meats on the grill and cook them to my desired temp. The spicy marinade tended to char and leave burnt residue on the chicken and pork. They give a lot of side dishes, which adds extra textures and flavors otherwise missing from just grilled meat dishes. I had a good experience at Kanpai, but I think it's on the pricier side of Asian food that I've also had elsewhere. The Groupon is a good deal, but I wouldn't usually have gone in otherwise. I was seated in the back of the restaurant where each table has its own grill built into the table top. The grills are very clean and in great working condition. I ordered the Combo B. for $90.00 which included for starters Miso Soup (2), White rice (2), Smashed Cucumber salad, Crispy Gyoza and Kimchee. If you're ever in a mood for some Japanese BBQ, this is the place. The food most definitely deserves a 5 stars but the service is a 4. If you tend to go one the weekends to eat at the BBQ tables, expect a wait. The only issue we encountered is that the service is not so great/friendly. We been around 3 times and our first time was this Asian girl, super rude, never came back. The next 2 times, a little better service but she did not really notice us and continuing to help her other tables more than us. The food is quite great, the meat is really fresh. One of my favorite sushi spots in Boca. This place is prefect for meeting with friends, going for a romantic date night or meeting for happy hour. They have a few specials on the happy hour menu and all of the rolls are fantastic. We usually sit at the bar to order but have ventured to the spinning boats before as well. I was talking to some friends and if you're looking for a more intimate dining experience, make sure you do the Japanese bbq. I haven't yet but that's definitely where we will be next time. Anxiously waited for them to reopen and finally made it but terribly disappointed. Black cod was awful, tasted like it came out of a lake. It was flavorless and the texture was mushy. The beef bulgogi was swimming in oil. Make sure they don't forget your rice as ours was forgotten. We were hoping the dessert would sweeten our tastebuds as the food was pretty bland but the ice cream came frozen solid and we were given the wrong flavors. The service was mediocre, our waitress was nice but unhelpful and unenthusiastic to fix the issues with our meal. On top of it all, the portions were incredibly overpriced. We opted to do their summer promotion, which was a bundle of starters, an entree, and dessert, which sounds like a good deal but we all left unsatisfied and nauseous. What's not to like?! We stopped in the other day, our main goal to sit by the river sushi boats. There isn't very many places with interesting presentation, so we were looking forward to it. we walked in, and although the place wasn't full the bar had most seats taken. The reason was because that's where the river went, around the bar. lucky for us, there was a couple seats still available next to each other. we slid in and took an assessment of the situation. It was happy hour so the drinks were discounted and the such was as well. We realized later what it meant was all the plates were discounted a couple bucks. The plates that is, are whats on the boats. and depending on the color of the plate that a particular sushi roll sits on, depends on the cost. I think white was cheapest and black was the pricey stuff. Either way, we grabbed em all. We tried to be smart about it, passing on many boats that went by that didn't interest us. But them 5 of the next 6 boats that drifted by had either a roll or an appetizer that we just couldn't skip. Many different colored plates were scattered in front of us. The interior is very large with different sections to dictate the type of Dining Experience you are looking for. Sit at the Japanese Cooktop Tables, the Main Bar, Outdoor Patio Dining, at the Rotating Sushi Boat Bar, or at their Sushi Side Bar. The decor all around is Japanese Modern-Chic giving you a full depth vibe for the place without an overwhelming sensation. Parking can be tricky as it is mainly street side but they do offer a couple spaces in the rear of the building. Lucky for us we arrived just as they opened and got a nearby street spot as we did not know about their parking. We came solely for the Rotating Sushi Boat Bar and arrived just as they were opening on a Saturday for Happy Hour! I recommend coming by 12:30 on Saturdays as they tend to fill up fast and there are only a limited number of seats for the Rotating Boats. Saturday Happy Hour is from 12-3pm with ALL Plates being $3 each! I was beyond excited to dive into the world of adorable little Sushi Boats Floating by! There are so many different items and plates that come out including ones from the Kitchen. The Sushi Chefs work hard in full view for you to see the Superb Freshness of each plate and Master Techniques they posses. They are very friendly if you have any questions of what is floating by or want to request a dish they are happy to do so! We had an external server as well that came by to take our Drink Order of Sapporo On Draft and refill as necessary. This was a bit on the slower side but with so much excitement going on in front of you it is easy to be distracted. Also, you can order off of the Menu from your Server while at the Sushi Boats. 99% of the dishes we had were tremendous in Quality, Freshness, Size, Knife Skills, and Taste. I've been a fan of Ninja Spinning Sushi bar for years. It only got better as they are now bigger and badder with Kanpai. The addition of Japanese / Korean BBQ was a little questionable at first. I mean you really gotta know how to season that meat if you're ready to make yourself a BBQ place. Korean BBQ is my favorite cuisine. After a few people told me to try it out, I gave in and boy am I pleased. I typically go to AYCE (all you can eat) BBQ joints so coming to Kanpai ordering a-la-carte will already be more expensive. Will it be worth it? It was. I tried a few items, short rib galbi, beef bulgogi and pork belly. The Beef bulgogi is not as diced up as I'm use to but even with longer strips, it was my favorite. Full of flavor and you get to cook it just how you want as you cook the meat at your table. The short rib and pork belly are more fatty meats. The pork belly were sliced really thin which I love. The galbi short ribs didn't have the bone with it, but was also a hit at the table. We also ordered 2 rolls to share for the table. Used to eat here often then my understanding is they closed down for a year or 2 because of a fire. First time back, place looks nice, prices are up of course and food servings are way down and ridiculously small in some instances, especially when you consider the price. My son who is 15 ordered the Teriyaki chicken for $24.00 yes you read that right 24.00....I expected him to go home satisfied we ended up stopping for carryout on the way home because he was still so hungry, below are a few pictures, the food was good but no value there if your not full when you leave, and at the prices Kanpai charges thats a requirement for me. They gave him a good amount of rice but the piece of chicken was about 1/4 thick and he it was about the size of a McDonalds regular hamburger patty I would estimate 2oz of chicken , for $24.00 that is simply unacceptable. For $14.00 that might be ok but for $24.00 I felt Fleeced and honestly ripped off I mentioned it to the server and they seemed annoyed ...Also I ordered the stirfry noodles with chicken for $22.00 and the serving was again VERY SMALL especially for 22.00 we all know how cheap noodles are and I can still buy quality chicken breast at costco for $2.29 a pound, at that price Kanpai is giving you about .30-.40 cents of chicken with your meals. The restaurant was predominantly filled with skinny young girls who don't care about serving size, & they won't finish it regardless of how small it is. lol But if you have a family and expect some value for your money. I don't request special treatment but will be helpful if they will add some whater or dont forget food order( especially when they are not busy.) Went the second night they re-opened, and I cannot say I'm very impressed. No more sushi boats, and they're not doing the HH as of now. The most disappointing part was when I made my reservation it asked about food allergies, so I assumed they would have some options. They had 0 gluten free sauces, and barely any gluten free menu items. I ended up getting a roll and fried rice without the soy sauce. The fried rice was actually super good, the meat was very tender. Portion was on the small side, just something to note. I got a California roll too because I thought it wouldn't be bad without the sauce, however, I was mistaken. The roll was so dry I was choking trying to get them down. I do not recommend sauce less rolls. I was also sad because their miso soup and spicy Mayo was not gluten free, which was a little confusing. Ambiance was alright. Overall it was a mid experience but I don't blame them too much since they just reopened. They definitely have some kinks to work out.
