Visiting Boca Raton and came here for brunch. It looks like a small shack as you view it from Federal Hwy (it used to be an Italian place that had drive thru gelato offered way back in the day, according to my friend). They are known for the brisket they smoke on the daily. They are a scratch kitchen restaurant so fairly popular with the locals. The casual nature of the restaurant itself along with the friendly staff make for a relaxing visit. Our server was Martha and she was a lot of fun! Hubby had the Açaí Bowl, my friend had the Smoked Brisket Melt, and I had the Chicken and Waffles. While the other two thoroughly enjoyed their meals, I was disappointed because they described the waffles in my dish as Belgian. If you know what a real Belgian waffle is, you would be disappointed as well getting a regular waffle that's just fluffier than normal. I dislike when restaurants do this - these are not Belgian waffles. The only redeeming quality is that they serve the dish with strawberry butter. Sounds weird but the taste was excellent. If you do stop by, keep in mind that the portions are fairly large so prepare to take some home with you or split a dish. read more

The Hen and the Hog is a casual BBQ joint on the side of Federal Highway in Boca. There is ample parking behind the restaurant and plenty of outside seating under the canopy and large umbrellas. It was a warm day so we opted to eat inside which was quite cold. There are only 7 small tables and a few bar seats but we were seated quickly and enjoyed the kitchy decor. The lovely server named Shanice gave us our beverages before taking our food order. The menu has a huge variety of brunch options as well as a few salads and entrees. I ordered the Smoked Brisket Omelet and it was so good. There was plenty of fresh smoked meat inside it and the portion size was very good. It came with a side but I asked for tomatoes slices instead of chopped potato hashbrowns. My husband ordered the hand held Baja Breakfast Wrap which was basically a loaded burrito. It was not very big in size and had alot of potatoes in it but he did like the flavor combination. It didnt come with a side because the potatoes were stuffed inside. We asked for some of their housemate BBQ sauce and it was good but quite sweet and not thick at all. I would have preferred something less sweet and a little smokey and spicy. The only issue we had was that the kitchen was VERY slow and our server apologized more than one time. The Hen and the Hog always have decent food. My fiancée and I had such a great experience at the Hollywood location that when I drove by this place while I was in Boca, I had to stop by and have my shrimp and grits. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The place is small but they also offer outdoor seating. Little tricky to find parking space and the entrance but compared to how everything else is, this little inconvenience is worth your troubles. If are looking for a decent breakfast and lunch place look no further. Give The Hen and the Hog a try and you won't be disappointed. They have freshly squeezed lemonade and orange juice but I haven't tried it yet. Maybe next time. The meal didn't take long at all and it was served hot and placed carefully. Went for lunch for the first time. Nachos were very good I really like the sweet brisket on them. Brisket melt was my favorite. The meat was delicious and the bread good too. It was big. The pulled pork platter was good and also a good amount of food. Sweet potato medallions were nice and soft and the breakfast potatoes are delicious, so much flavor. Only bad thing was the staff. For at least thirty minutes they were screaming out to each other to complain inside the restaurant about how much tip the outside tables were leaving them. Dana was our server and she was very pleasant, polite, funny, she had great recommendations, she made our 1st so enjoyable. There wasn't many vegetarian options however they are willing to work with the menu and your diet.. I ordered the nova Benedict, but I hate poached eggs, so they were able to give me two fried hard eggs in replacement. We also ordered the cinnamon toast, crunch waffles with a side of eggs and bacon for my guest. We also had their lychee mimosa, which was very good as well as the Henny Rita, which was good, but could've been a little stronger. The food was very flavorful and plenty. Great place for a hearty brunch with friends! The inside is a little smaller so it seats a smaller party and also has bar counter seats. Outside can hold larger parties. It's summer so it's a little bit on the hotter side but the food is so worth it. The people who work here are also super nice and check on you often. We got the orange mimosa and loaded grits to start. Can't go wrong with a brunch mimosa. The loaded grits were perfect. I was scared that the bacon and sausage would make the grits super salty but honestly it was a really good balance. Next we had the crème brûlée pancakes, let me tell you, I ate a 1/3 of it without the syrup before my boyfriend even came back to the table. It's somehow crispy and also fluffy at the same time. The other dish we got was the smoked brisket skillet which is so filling that we had to take it home. The barbecue sauce went really well with the dish. Definitely coming back here for brunch so I can explore more of the menu and of course get the pancake again!! read more

The food was excellent, and the menu had many delicious and unique breakfast options. Unfortunately, the experience was really dampened by the service. We sat down and ordered immediately, because we had been looking over the menu while we waited 40 minutes to be sat. Our server disappeared with no word and our food was brought out by someone else. The waters on our table remained empty the whole time we dined, as we were not checked on again. After waiting for 20 minutes once we finished our plates, we waved down a different server and were finally able to get our check after an additional 15 minutes of waiting. While the weather was nice ..please be aware that the flies are really hard to get away from which I usually don't have an issue with when seated outside. HOWEVER, the food was delicious. I ordered the brisket bowl which had avocado brisket potatoes and tomatoes with a side of cheese grits. My friend ordered steak and eggs. I had the lychee mimosa and she had regular mimosa. I will say that I enjoyed the steak that my friend ate more than the brisket due to how sweet the brisket was. It was very tender but I would recommend the steak over the brisket if you do not like a sweet taste on your meat. The grits were amazing! I craved them days after coming here. As for my mimosa, I could've done a regular one. I did not taste the lychee much but it wasn't that different from a regular mimosa. Overall it was a great experience. We were seated outside and on a normal SoFlo day, it would have been beautiful. My main complaint would be the service. It took a while to get our food which was fine but then we had no silverware and our server barely checked on us. Hubby and J wanted to try something new and stumbled upon The Hen and The Hog. They had a smoker outside ( great sign for a scratch kitchen) indoor and out door dining options. It's quaint with farmhouse vibes, we were greeted warmly they have amazing staff who not only provide a warm and inviting environment but a great experience. Caity our server was exceptional she had great recommendations. We opted on the Biscuits and Gravy, 10/10 the biscuits were perfect not dry out all and the gravy was made with Chorizo and had a great "zing" to it. We also got the Baja breakfast wrap which was so delicious highly recommend as well. There other items I want o try so I will definitely be back to explore more of the menu. This place is completely overrated. We stopped in recently and got a pair of breakfast skillets with vegetables and eggs. The waitress was friendly but the service was so slow. It was really ridiculous and they weren't even that busy to be honest. I was also not impressed with the food quality whatsoever. Both of our skillets were lukewarm and average and the quality for the price you're paying was just not there. I think our bill came to $40 bucks for two skillets of eggs and whatnot, I mean come on 40 bucks? Would definitely not go back here again. The fresh squeezed orange juice was amazing! We went on a Thursday around 11:30am. Every table at the outside patio was filled so we ate inside, which also had a quaint and charming atmosphere. The only downfall to eating inside was that the servers seemed to have the mentality that inside was at the back of the house with no customers within earshot. They were gossiping about customers while waiting for their orders to come to the window. And two waitresses got in a verbal argument and literally started yelling at each other. They dropped multiple "f" bombs and called each other b@&$# 2-feet from our table, loudly. This was right in front of my two elementary school children. They seemed to get over it quickly and were back to being chummy with each other within five minutes. But still, it was juvenile and unprofessional. I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and go back, but if that was a normal occurrence I definitely wouldn't return a third time. But other than the drama, it was a great experience! read more
