It's can be difficult to find a sushi restaurant open after 8pm in the north/east bay. I came across Kansai on Yelp. I liked that they were open until 11:30pm (with a late night happy hour 10pm until closing)! Kansai is located in the same plaza as 99 Ranch. The Google Maps GPS may take you a strange route that goes behind the buildings first. The restaurant was clean and pretty big! I saw three different TVs all on the ABC channel. Not much of a wait around 9:30pm. Service was very prompt. The food was good. Ordered a pretty Princess cocktail. The cocktail menu is on the little standalone card on the table. Not listed on the main menus themselves. Also had the power spider roll, dragon roll, and rainbow roll. As you can see the rolls were a good portion. The slices of fish were thick. I enjoyed the rainbow and dragon roll more than the power spider roll. The drink wasn't overwhelmingly strong, but you could taste the alcohol. Great option for late night sushi. We made reservations for the party room for my mom's birthday. They required a $50 deposit made in person which they refunded day of the event. They were very accommodating on table set up. We fit 17 people comfortably. The waiters were so nice and checked back often, ensuring Eva's everything they needed. Food was good. We picked a great day because on Sunday there was a happy hour menu all day. We allowed guests to pick from the regular menu too but most people just marked up the happy hour sheet. We stopped here for a late night dinner after playing games at Round 1 nearby. We got in at 10:58pm and they said their last call is at 11pm, so we managed to make all of our orders in 2 minutes. Given how late we were, the staff was still super nice and they were so attentive the whole meal. The wait staff came to refill our waters multiple times and came to check in to see how we were doing. The food came out super fast as well! Everything we ordered was yummy. We ordered some rolls, and I also had the 3 item combo bento box. Everything in the combo was delicious, and I was surprised their teriyaki beef was as tender as it was! The only miss for me was the fried tofu appetizer - it was really bland and because they add sauce after frying, it was just kind of a wet bland tofu thing. I love this place. Their seating is spacious, the dining room is clean, the food is delicious, and the staff are so nice. The atmosphere is giving modern but the the pricing sure ain't! I love to ball on a budget and it's not uncommon to see sushi rolls averaging $19+ dollars now. Sure they have a few of those here, but you can still get a decent sized roll here for about $12-14 and if you come for happy hour, even less than that!! Honestly, just come for Happy Hour. I want to say they have one of the best HH menus around. I don't come for drinks, I come to eat and I appreciate that they offer such a wide selection of apps, rolls, entrees on their HH menu. It's only Mon-Fri 3-6 PM so make sure you come early. They give you a paper HH sheet, and a pen so you can mark how many of each item you'd like. You can still order off the main menu but my guess is you'll probably see plenty of the HH menu to choose from. The BF and I were starving, so we ordered two rolls (John and In N Out), spicy chirashi bowl, mix tempura and 2 garlic albacore hand rolls. I don't always go for hand rolls because unless the server brings them to you ASAP, the nori gets soft. They brought over our hand rolls right away and the nori was still crisp so major points for that. All of our food came out pretty quickly, one right after the other, so that was nice for those who like to take pics of their meal (me). The hand rolls were excellent. They don't sauce it so you can really taste the garlicky fish. I like to dip mine in a little soy sauce, yummy! I like that all the tables had low sodium soy sauce. They give you a little ginger and wasabi but feel free to ask for more. I'm a pickled ginger fiend so I asked for another serving, which they didn't skimp on, and they were super nice and quick about it too. The John roll is a basic shrimp tempura Ca roll topped with avo and salmon/tuna. It had a little sauce but nothing overwhelming. The In N Out roll was okay.. kinda basic. Spicy tuna inside, and topped with tuna. It had a little sauce too but I feel like it needed a little bit more something. Texturally, it wasn't giving like the John roll. Our mix tempura came with an assorted mix of veggies and 1 shrimp (potato, onion, broccoli, delicata squash, carrot zucchini). I love the batter they use and they way they fry it. It's so light but crunchy. The sauce it comes with is meh but not bad. Just very light in flavor. It's a big basket and great for sharing. The spicy chirashi bowl came out and it was so cute. It's diced cuts of mixed fish and salad mix, on a bed of rice. They give you a thick red sauce on the side to mix in. I only used about half but it was plenty enough to dress the salad. It's a bit spicy and sweet so be light with it! It honestly tastes like gochujang but mixed in, it's so good!! All our items were ordered off the HH menu, so our total after tax came to $64 which I think isn't bad considering all the yummy stuff we got. For the non sushi fans, they do have bentos and other various appetizers and entrees that are cooked, have meat, etc. NGL might only come back for HH just because it's such a good deal! Don't come here expecting a 5 star meal at a $$ price. If you temper expectations, this place is actually really solid. Plus it's easy to get to, it's right next door to Ohgane. read more

We were having a large group meet on a weekday after work but some of us got there for happy hour 3-6 and 9-close Monday-Thursday. So 2/6 of us got there about 530 and we wanted to start with the happy hour menu waiting for everyone, we got some sake, same cocktails, soju, each got a roll and seaweed salad and edamame. As folks started coming in we ordered some sashimi, got a baked roll, regular dragon and rainbow roll, and some baked ones which I can't remember. I came when it wasn't crowded and the service here was good. I ordered a bento boxes with beef teriyaki, sashimi, and vegetable tempura. The beef teriyaki was pretty good a little dry but the sauce was sufficient enough. Their sashimi was really good. It was one of the freshest fish I've ever had. Great happy hour menu! The only disappointment we had were the rolls kept falling apart. The baked roll was the most disappointing because it was like eating a sushi mush. I didn't even eat any of it after my first bite. The regular rolls were yummy, but very lightly rolled. They would come apart if you grabbed it the wrong way. I really enjoyed my unagi hand roll too. The tempura was good but hard to share because most pieces were stuck together and if you tried to unstick it the tempura would come off defeating the purpose of ordering tempura. Lunch Special Bentos are done well. Tempura fresh and crispy. But be careful what you order sushi wise. The deep fried spicy tuna roll I ordered tasted like they used canned tuna. I was hoping for a classic dynamite roll, bc you know how good those can be. The tuna on the inside had that brownish hue canned tuna has and did taste like it wasn't the fresh raw tuna that gets par cooked when you deep fry sushi using fresh fish. Dressing it up with sauces, masago, and scallions isn't enough to mask that taste either. I did enjoy the negi hama roll, as it was the only raw Hamachi I could find on the menu. Stopped by on a Sunday around 3 PM and was surprised to be given a happy hour menu. It's cool that happy hour is on the weekends too! Happy hour consists of discounted prices on several appetizers, rolls, hand rolls, entrees, and sashimi sets. We opted for fried oysters, a seven piece chef's choice sashimi set, unagi hand roll, albacore hand roll, and the John roll. The fried oysters came with four large oysters and were pretty good! The seven piece sashimi set came with nice large cuts of sashimi. I thought it was going to be seven different fishes, but it was three different ones only (a couple cuts of each), the salmon being the best of the three fishes. The albacore hand roll and unagi hand roll were average. The John roll was yummy! Rice to fish ratio was good, and I loved the sauce. They are extremely safe when it comes to Covid protocols. It was my first time going to Kansai in Concord and I was absolutely in love. I've been to the Oakland location before but this location was a first. We went a little bit earlier than dinner time so we can catch a movie nearby so when we got there there was no line at all. It's a great place service is amazing, all the waiters and waitresses were really really nice. I love their portion sizes and their selection of dishes. They have quite a wide range of selection and plenty of options to choose from. Prices are very very reasonable and portions are on the larger side. They have a very small outdoor dining area under a tent. We were a party of 6 so there were a lot of bento boxes and some sushi rolls. Everything was pretty tasty. Bentos are huge and serve good portions. I was able to take some of my friend's leftovers. The chicken teriyaki was better than the beef, IMO. Something about the texture of the beef threw me off. This place came as a recommendation from a friend. It's in a very busy strip mall but you will definitely find parking. You are greater right at the front where the hostess seats you . There's tables and booths with two large TV's playing any game that is on. The happy hour menu has a lot of options and is very well priced. We ordered seaweed salad and edamame. Found this gem after searching for sushi restaurants in Walnut Creek around 2pm (most of them were closed or opened later in the evening). After looking on Yelp, I found Kansai and I was not disappointed. When you enter you're greeted by a host and the first thing she did was check our temperature using a tympanic thermometer and then asked that we used hand sanitizer before entering the floor where the tables are. Wow! This is actually the first restaurant that I've been to that is actually following tight covid protocols and that's satisfying to know that while you're eating amongst others, your exposure is reduced. Our sushi was on point. I ended up ordered the JD which was on the spicy rolls menu and the lady got a California roll and another roll (can't think of the name) but all were good!
