The older gentleman was helping two women in their 40's or 50's ahead of us. The first ordered perfectly fine. The second was being obstinent for no reason, telling him for him to choose the number of scoops and what they would be, changing her story when he tried to clarify, etc. After he scooped it and took their debit card, the woman says, "Do you have a problem? Just keep smiling then." She was unbelievably aggressive and rude. He handled it with grace and refused to acknowledge her childish behavior, wishing them a great afternoon on their way out. He was a class act. If you are the older African-American woman who was wearing a hot pink floor length sun dress today....you should apologize for your terribly rude behavior. What a great place to get ice cream! For $3, you get three large scoops of ice cream (which they call a single. All of the flavors (and they have quite a variety) are simple and delicious. They eschew the fancy types of ice cream that are all the rage at popular places in Berkeley, where you might find something called kale swiss chard balsamic ice cream with candied pecan in a maple bourbon kombucha reduction. Yuck. When you have great tasting ice cream, you don't need to be fancy and Kapaw's exemplifies that quality. Also, I appreciate that they don't go over the top with the heavy cream. You won't feel weighed down after eating this ice cream. Everything about it is just right. All of the people at Kapaw's were really nice. The other customers were cool too. No sample abusers here. Very creamy and delicious ice cream! We tried the Peanut Butter Chocolate and the Praline, and I'd recommend both highly. The portions are maybe a little too massive though - three scoops is a single?? Yikes! As a foreigner, it definitely embodies what I think of as "America-sized" portions! This is an adorable small ice cream shop on the waterfront. During lunch across the street, our waitress recommended Kapaw's instead of ordering dessert, and she was right. Please know that for the price of a "small" in a waffle cone, you actually get THREE (3) generous scoops. And if you ask nicely, you can even have them in three different flavors! (The shopkeeper told a group of elderly customers that they were entitled to ordering single scoops even though the option wasn't listed on the menu board.) I had the strawberry cheesecake and he had chocolate mousse. Both were amazing. Great ingredients throughout and very creamy. Perfect for taking on a stroll along the pier, and maybe sharing bits of the waffle cone with the birds. A note about payment: For what you get, the prices were quite low. We were afraid it would be a cash only transaction (we hadn't prepared to stop here) but they happily took our debit card for an under-$10 purchase.
