We found oyster catcher during a weekend trip to Whidbey island. It came up on almost every list of must visit places, so though it was a 40 minute drive from our Airbnb we decided we had to try it. We celebrated our anniversary there and it was worth it! The space is cozy and a good vibe for a date night. We loved both of the dishes we tried, especially the scallop risotto. All the seafood was fresh and cooked really well. The miso cod had the perfect crispiness on the skin and the scallops were perfect. All the tabloids went really well together. The cocktails were not bad, but not our favorite part of the meal. Everyone was super friendly and we really appreciated that our server knew exactly when to check in and give us space. He also picked up on the fact that we wanted to share all the dishes so he brought them out one at a time. When we ordered dessert he added in a candle since he knew we were celebrating and brought out extra dessert wine and goodies too! I had one of the best meals of my life yesterday. All I can say is if you ever get the chance to go here do it and order the tasting menu. Let the chefs decide. You'll try things and combinations you never thought of (bite size pickled Hubbard squash-yum, pasta with crab to die for) so much I can't even type it all and you'll love it. I started taking pictures but after the 2nd course was too caught up with the food... and was there a lot. They've thought of everything. Going back today for happy hour and already made reservations for dinner so I can order some of the items I saw pass by my table. Absolutely stunning and the staff is spectacular. While visiting Whidbey Island, a friend recommended The Oystercatcher for our party of 6. Making reservations was tricky in that you could only make a reservation for 4 or for 2. After a quick phone call we were able to be seated at one table. However, the table was situated in a narrow space that whenever a server passed by, my chair was bumped. Moreover, the three of us facing the window were blinded by the sun (even though there is a sun screen). As for the food, it's expertly prepared and well thought out. Although I would have loved to have ordered the Chef's Tasting Menu, everyone in the party must order it and I knew going in that one in our party wasn't having it so we did the next best thing: we ordered practically everything on the menu and shared it family style. We were traveling around this area and wanted some local oysters. What we found was the most delicious meal we have had in the San Juan Islands! We started with a flavorful salad and fresh bread and homemade strawberry butter. Then grilled oysters were perfect with just the right seasonings, followed by grilled octopus and pork belly with an amazing sauce and some greens. The final course was king salmon with squash blossoms and other well paired flavorings. The lemon drop martini and cider were a perfect accompaniment and the hostess/bartender/server was awesome! Eating at The Oystercatcher was the perfect way to end our day exploring Whidbey Island. We made reservations in advance, and I would highly recommend that in order to secure a table - they're a small place. The restaurant is beautiful, and you can see the picturesque cove from the windows. The service was fantastic - shout out to our waiter, Zach. He was extremely attentive, pleasant, and helpful! He helped answer questions we had on menu items and gave us good recommendations for wine pairing with the meal. Definitely order the oysters (duh!!!)! They are incredibly fresh. Probably the best tasting oysters I've ever had. I also highly recommend the seasonal pasta. My linguine was generously loaded with flavorful morels which soaked in the velvety sauce. We took a look at the menu from all three of the recommended restauants before deciding that this place was the type of vibe we were looking for today. We came in without any expectations, but Oystercatcher was absolutely an amazing experiencing. We came for an early dinner on Saturday and managed to snag an outdoor table for two, which gave us not only a view of the town, but also the water! Our host was quick on her feet and really friendly. Between the two of us, we opted for Mussels & Clams, which isn't on the dinner menu because it's usually served during happy hour, but they made us a pretty sizeable appetizer. Glad we were able to get this because our recommendations were for mussels, haha. We also got the Whidbey Farm Salad and Alaskan Halibut to share. And because the slices of bread that came with the Mussels & Clams were so good (and locally made) we ended up ordering a side order of bread. Food came at a pretty reasonable time considering how packed the restaurant got as people started coming in for dinner hour. Our Mussels & Clams came first and it was generous in sizing. Although it was big, we finished it entirely. The mussels and clams were all cleaned really well. No grainy sand in-between bites. The soup base that these came in was surprisingly really good. We inquired about it and it's made with a Laotian spice. It was so good! The soup tasted green, earthy, and comforting, but also had a mild kick thanks to a bit of chili sauce. We ordered extra bread to sop up the rest of the soup. The bread was excellent sourdough. We especially loved the sweetness of the molasses bread contrasted with the savory soup. Next up, our Whidbey Farm Salad. It comes with duck proscuitto, but the main highlight for me was the melons and candied pistachios. I've had candied walnuts before, but never candied pistachios and they were delicious crunchy bits. The melons added a refreshing, and sweet flavor to the salad. The melon pieces were nearly clear in color, but it tastes like a sweet cantaloupe. I'm not sure what melon they used exactly, but it was delicious. The balsamic molasses vinaigrette paired well with the salad. Lastly, the Alaskan Halibut - I'm so glad we went for this entree. The Halibut was crispy on the outside, but still retained moisture on the inside. It's paired with a bed of coleslaw and it came with two sauce - sichuan kumquat puree and wild mushroom conserva. Both were excellent pairings and delicious. We were definitely full at this point, but because everything was so good so far, we were intrigued with what they had for dessert today. Quite a list, but we opted for Beignets and a Mango & Strawberry Sorbet (made in-house). The beignets came warm, coated with powdered sugar, and on top of a strawberry rhubarb jammy compote. The beignets were fluffy, light, and sweet! Absolutely delicious. But I would have to say that I liked the sorbet more. The sorbet was surprisingly really well made. Most of the sorbet has a really smooth texture. There were a bit of icy bits, but I still enjoyed those parts like a slushie. It also wasn't super sweet, but it was the perfect way to end a fantastic dinner. We were both blown away with our experience here! read more

Standouts were definitely the oysters and halibut, but honestly everything was delicious and fresh. We also had our toddler in tow and while they didn't have a kids menu, they did make her some (very expensive) buttered noodles which we appreciated. Our server was very attentive, though I didn't particularly appreciate him asking me if I wanted a birthday dessert and then charging us for it. But, that was my only complaint! This is the second year we have celebrated my birthday at the oystercatcher. Last year we were blown away by the experience, the food and portions. We still think about the lemon pasta and mussels from last year's chef menu! This year was a different experience, the service was still wonderful and the flavor profiles of each dish was phenomenal. However, I was a little disappointed that the chef menu moved from a sharing experience to individual dishes (some shared) and the portions were significantly smaller. Wait staff was patient with lots of questions and also took pictures for us. I highly recommend their grilled oysters. They use excellent quality oysters, which are cooked to perfection, still juicy, tender, and so well marinated. I loved them so much, I had them twice during a 3 day trip, and then brought my friend back to eat them again months later. You can't go wrong with their cocktails, which also all have great names. Their main dishes are well portioned (the "small" plates were all larger than we expected!). Save room for dessert because the kitchen knows sweets too! read more

Let me just tell you right here and right now, if you have an opportunity to come here, you do it. You don't walk, you run. Everything about our experience was amazing. So let's get into it... First, the ambiance was perfect for date night. It was cozy but not tight, and the lighting was perfect and straight of the rom-com movie where the guy takes the girl to the romantic restaurant near the water. Second, the food. Listen, I tried not to like everything but I liked everything we tried. In fact, I asked our waiter, "what's the worst thing on the menu" and I come to find out, there is no "worst thing" on the menu. Believe, we ate enough to try to find it and we couldn't. The food, the wine, the cocktails were so above and beyond I felt like we were living in some fantasy world where this can't be real but friends, it is real and I recommend you try it. Third and certainly not last was the service. The service was so incredibly good from the timing of the food to personal attention we received throughout our dinner. Even the owner uncorked our wine and not in the "I am the owner so you better feel special" kind of way. In fact, she was so unassuming and nice that it was only our own detective work that we discovered that the boss was right there in the weeds with her employees and not for recognition but for the labor of love of the restaurant. Our first time and we ordered the chef choice pre fixed menu. Enthusiastic wait staff well versed in explaining the wine and courses. Our understanding is the dishes made are at the whim of chef and not any regular menu item. Our meal was so good!!! The salad was tart and bright with a but of sea salt for crunch. The bread with compound butter was so good. Makes me want to visit the bakery attached to restaurant. The scallop was delicious and had this mandarin sauce that really stood out. The pasta I loved more than the main. It was perfect without being overly garlic based. I love garlic but the flavors were so well done. The mushrooms were either forged or from a local grower. Farm to table. The pasta was this bell flower shaped called campari. Never seen it before lol. The main was the pork tenderloin. Very tender and flavorful. Veggies were almost caramelized. Dessert was rich. I preferred the ice cream which wasn't overly cherry flavored. I thought it was very nicely done. The staff replaced dishes and utensils each course and wiped table multiple times. Same location, same name, same focus on creative seafood cookery in a friendly, informal setting. We didn't know there were new owners until we bumped into some locals after lunch. They mentioned that there's a new fire table up front that serves as a waiting area when it's packed. We thought it was just a good choice to expand seating, but it's kinda the signal announcing new ownership. A few years ago, we started feeling like we'd eaten the whole menu here, and when we visited the island on weekends we'd hit other places. We still talked about old favorite dishes, though, and last week we checked their website to see if the menu had turned over enough for another visit. Turns out they had new dishes, and had added a weekend happy hour lunch. We walked in without reservations, and the nice early-spring weather had lured everyone else to something other than a local restaurant. They had only a dozen or so tables occupied, as opposed to what is usually a madhouse for HH. Our server gave us the whole rundown as we chatted during table visits. She clearly enjoys working there...she mentioned that she and her husband would soon be spending their anniversary having dinner on the deck. Who else do you know who celebrates a personal special occasion at their place of employment? So cool. The HH menu changes all the time, which is rad. They REALLY take care to explain everywhere on their website that they change their menu a lot. For some of us, this is something worth bragging about, but it sounds like they have to smooth some ruffled feathers now and then. Hopefully everyone clicks with the new approach soon. Oysters We've been almost-successfully planning an outing for oysters lately, and seeing these on the menu yanked us across the water and in for lunch this weekend. All Kumamotos, served with a red wine mignonette. We had 30. Could barely get enough. Hubbard squash risotto Great sauce with a bit of tang, nice crunchy veg, very toothsome and appetizing grains. Wonderful small dish, like the whole HH menu. Crab and shrimp salad Fantastic house-made tortilla chips, wonderful warm savory sauce underneath, a bit of greens and seafood. Not a huge portion but so delicious and you keep using the chips to scrape every other plate, too. Parisian gnocchi I dunno what "Parisian" means here, and it doesn't matter. Rich pesto sauce on the cauliflower, and gnocchi pillows you could probably chew with your tongue. They absolutely melt in your mouth. Kohlrabi croquette Delicious warm savory sauce under, a smattering of greens and such, and then two really flavorful croquettes. Awesome fillings to them, cooked through. The crust was super dark and tipping very slightly toward a hint of bitterness, so I might call them a bit over, but we sopped up every crumb, and every other table that ordered them got them the same color and they all ate every bite, too. The cocktails are all out of this world, too. Humorous names, very creative mixes, all served attractively. We tried 6 and loved them all. The Springtide had more lilac on the nose than on the palate, and was mildly-flavored overall. But that was hardly a disappointment. We wish we could come here every weekend, but it sounds like we were lottery-level lucky to walk in and get a table this time. Can't wait to come back. read more

Yesterday, my girlfriend, our tiny dog, and I enjoyed dinner on the sunny porch of the Oystercatcher and it was truly exceptional. We dine out often but rarely do we experience a flawless choreography of the kitchen and dining room much less extraordinary food and cocktails presented so artfully. Even then, what stood out the most was the hospitality. I could go on about how we weren't even hungry (we stopped because we just wanted a break from our road trip) and how we kept ordering just to see and taste each of the progressively delicious dishes. I could even tell you what to order but it doesn't matter in comparison to how they made us feel. What left each of us, and without a doubt our dog, feeling so satiated with genuine care, was the warmhearted, fun loving and charismatic life force we felt from the staff. Our experience dining at Oystercatcher was without a doubt the magical aesthetic experience every Restauranteur strives for. We are so glad we tried the tasting menu (thank you Maia!). We were hooked at the surprise starter (shrimp with avocado mousse and micro greens on a thinly sliced fried potato). The persimmon salad with hazelnut crunch, delicata squash and blue cheese with a maple vinaigrette was delicious. As was the fried oysters on an andouille sausage puree with chili crisp aioli. I mean - fried oysters, chili crisp... how can you go wrong! This was followed up with a spinach linguine with a puttanesca sauce, homemade duck and pork sausage, and fresh burrata. Too good. After a sorbet to cleanse the palate... or just to enjoy sorbet... the final protein was New York Strip with tempura artichokes , roasted carrots and kale with a roquefort cream. For dessert they served a freshly baked squash cake with mascarpone frosting and cranberry ice cream. Oh... we did the wine pairing, so all of the dishes were paired with a wonderful wine and the dessert was served with a 10-year tawny port made in Portugal by a women owned port house. We ordered the Tasting Menu. Each course was a delight. Oysters that were the most clean and bright I have ever had. Mussels, prawns, pasta and the most perfectly cooked halibut. We ended with rhubarb ice cream and a cheesecake tart. It was seriously one of the best meals of my life. Best dining experience my wife and I have had in years- perhaps ever!! Since this was to be our five-year anniversary dinner, we came in with high hopes and optimism, as well as a side order of healthy skepticism. Well after our experience, we can say with absolute certainty that our expectations were far surpassed- from the moment we stepped through the front door until we regrettably had to leave. They gave us the best seat in the house with a wide window and great view of the Salish Sea. Our server Aaron was especially professional, friendly and informative. And he had a great sense of humor, which only added to the experience and kept us laughing throughout the service. If I'm being honest here, we brought our appetites and just completely went to town on the succinct, classy menu (often a good indicator of a well-run eatery). The grilled oysters with kimchi butter and togarashi were a tremendous way to kick off the meal (I ordered a second serving while my wife was in the loo. Shhhh, don't tell her). The Parisian gnocchi was the best we have ever had the pleasure of enjoying- expertly executed and brimming with flavor. I don't recall the name of their salad, but it was undoubtedly the most unique and flavorful we've ever eaten (I think it had cucumber, pine nuts, brie, pesto and maybe one or two other ingredients). Insane. We finished with the seared scallops (with kabocha-miso puree, steadfast broccolini, hazelnut dashi, and Asian pear kimchi). Absolutely divine. And okay, so we also had a nibble or two of their dreamy bread and seasonal house-made butter along the way, which may have been the reason I looked rather distended after our meal. The service of the waitstaff was literally beyond reproach- the finest we have ever experienced. There wasn't one instance where a dirty plate (one we had finished) was left on our table for longer than a minute. They were like a very well-oiled machine, with lots of spunk and personality. Sorry for the long review, but Chef Ben Jones runs an extremely tight ship (pun intended because of their proximity to the sea), and the entire staff made our five-year anniversary dining experience one that we will never, ever forget. This is a great little place that doesn't look like much on the outside but will surprise you on the inside! There aren't a lot of tables so definitely will want to consider reservations and the effort is worth it. I had the Parmesan gnocchi which had their house made sausage. The gnocchi had a perfect fluffy pillowy texture that only comes from freshly made excellence. Service was great and our table never had to wait for anything. What a GEM of a restaurant! We happened across this cozy restaurant with an outdoor patio after a hike and did not feel underdressed. We started out on the patio but quickly became cold and our waitress was very accommodating to move us inside. We ordered the half dozen oysters and the Chefs Menu for the evening and were so happy we did! Each dish was beautifully presented, held delicious flavors and textures together and each better than the last. I only remembered to take a photo of the protein dish (scallops), the rest were so amazing.
