    Spicy garlic edamame
    Kysa T.

First time back here in a while for dinner on a Monday night. We had a party of 4 and were seated right away inside. It was quite busy as more guests came after us and had to be seated outside. My parents frequent here a lot and have gotten to know the chef. He gave us a nice side plate of pickled cucumbers, seaweed salad, ginger and wasabi. We ordered the spicy garlic edamame, salmon and yellowtail sashimi, octopus and eel nigiri, scallop and spicy tuna handrolls, and mango and green tea mochi. We also ordered a few rounds of hot sake as well. The chef gave us all nice fatty salmon belly on our second round of sashimi, which was delicious and very appreciated. Everything was very fresh and tasty. Service was fast, friendly, and attentive. I always have a great experience here and love that it's continued to be a great local PQ spot.

Probably best for takeout. I thought this place was decent if you're in the area, pretty standard local sushi spot. Went on a Wednesday and the place was mostly empty. Decor was a bit iffy. It felt a little DIY with paper notes taped to the wall and written in sharpie, and a little bit of mismatched paint etc. Service was kind but minimal, with an older woman working at the front.

Although I no longer work in this area, we still make our way here from time to time because although we love supporting small businesses, we especially love supporting great small businesses! This has been a lunch hour spot for us for years. We always order for our appetizer the age tofu- fried perfectly, retaining the soft insides and with a tasty sauce. We then do some combination of bento and sushi, so we get the best of all worlds. They know how to cook here, and they know how to roll. You should do the same when you visit, you won't be disappointed. They're always so friendly and welcoming. Try them out!

    Alaskan roll with no salmon??!!

This used to be my favorite sushi place for YEARS. Like 10 years. Then during the pandemic the quality went down and I stopped going. I just recently started getting sushi again and the food has been pretty good, not amazing. I ordered a DoorDash pickup order and got an Alaskan roll, where the MAIN ingredient is salmon. They gave me no salmon and just gave me a roll with crab salad in it and nothing else. It was so weird and disappointing. Couldn't do anything to fix it. Door dash refunded me only $2. I'm not sure how you miss the main ingredient of salmon in an Alaskan roll. And just make a roll with crab salad. Anyway, I'm done with wonderful again. Sorry guys, work on your quality control. Sad.

We went for a little celebration on a Monday night. John served us. He was so funny and friendly. He helped us make choices and even led us to some secret menu items like the Mamacita. Everything was high quality and so good!! I'll definitely be back!

We had a small dinner with just three dishes, all of which were just average. The place was quiet and not crowded, and I really enjoyed dining outside.

    Salmon Roll Tuna Roll

This sushi place is always quiet when I come which sometimes seems off putting but this place is amazing and for a very great price, I am picky so I get very basic rolls like the tuna and salmon roll but they still are so great. The women who is at the front was our waitresses and she was very nice and made sure we were getting the right food and checking up on us, and the ambiance is very nice i love the the little sushi bar and how you can also sit outside. This place is almost hidden in a corner so it is easy to miss but i 100% recommended coming here.

We came here for dinner . We ordered black dragon roll, PQ roll ,dynamite roll, spider roll . It was ok .The rice was mushy . Nothing to note here. Today was not a good sushi. Some other times it's so good . I don't know what happened to the rice .The server was nice and efficient.

1st time here this evening and it was a pleasant surprise. We sat at the sushi bar and John was our sushi chef for the evening. He greeted us with a seaweed salad and cucumber salad. It was one of the best cucumber salads we've had. It wasn't complex but simple but tasty. We ordered the brand new Spicy Wonderful roll and assorted nigiri (Salmon, Tuna, yellowtail, mackerel, escolar and salmon roe. Before we left we ordered the Seared salmon belly... oh my!!!! Out of this world. All were fantastic!!!! Highly recommend this place! We will be back!!!

Rice, the main ingredient of cooking is always on point but today it overcame, probably because it is very hot, the contrast of today's air conditioning was excellent, anyway. The best temaki in San Diego because it still arrives at your table crispy. A restaurant that surprises me every day that passes because it is a restaurant with the age group of younger waiters in SD but with better service than many restaurants in La Jolla. For those who really understand modern (non-traditional) Japanese cuisine, without a doubt the best. By the way, today the yellow tail was melting in the mouth. The wait is pretty long on weekends, and you can join their waitlist from a QR code at the host stand while you walk around other businesses in the plaza! Heads up, the restaurant is pretty loud, as they often blast their "Happy Birthday" audio over speakers multiple times. Recently, I've ordered catering for their large platter (base $150). Super great deal considering the amount of rolls they give you and the freshness. Pretty simple to order catering off their website as well!

The servers are also very kind and attentive. We ordered the gato special roll (shrimp tempura and spicy tuna with seared wagyu on top) and truffle yellowtail roll (snow crab, yellowtail, and truffle), which were both quite delicious! The truffle complemented the yellowtail and the snow crab nicely. I would definitely consider coming back and recommend checking this place out!

Hiya B.U.M.S.,…read more Looking for a convenient, family-friendly bite right after catching a flick at the theatre next door? Sushi Gato in Carmel Mountain is an awesome stop. We've visited several times and usually have a 4-star experience, but on our most recent trip, it lands at a solid 3 out of 5 stars, which is not a bad thing at all. Here's the breakdown of our experience: The highlight of our visit was the service. We were greeted and seated in a speedy and professional fashion, which was huge since we'd built up a pretty good snack-sized appetite after a long movie (a little too early for a full dinner!). The overall vibe remains very family-friendly. Our Food: Salmon Roll: Very nice bite-sized pieces; officially earned a "yummy" stamp of approval from our son. Agedashi Tofu: Really good flavor, served with the sauce on the side. Tempura Udon & Assorted Tempura: The udon was another "yum" for our boy, and the individual tempura pieces had that classic, crisp crunch you expect. Chicken Teriyaki Bento Plate: Served with tempura, salad, and miso soup. The salad and tempura were standard, and the miso tasted original--a splash of soy sauce added just the right kick. Chicken Katsu Roll: The one downside of the meal--the katsu was a bit dry, and the roll didn't hold together well (more of a chop than a structured roll). Tips: Time It Right. Perfect spot for an early evening "pre-dinner" snack right after an afternoon matinee next door. Dip & Sauce Customization. If you order items with sauce on the side (like the Agedashi Tofu), feel free to ask for extra sauce upfront if you like your tofu well-coated. I usually hesitate getting citrusy rolls because they end up tasting the same as any other place or the citrus part over powers everything, but this was unique and the flavors balanced each other out. Tempura was also nice and crispy. Also love that they used lemon zest(?). Would order again. Una don: Their sauce for this is SO good and the unagi was cooked perfectly. Would order again. Inari set. I LOVE tofu and you don't see inaris in SD. We were very happy with this. Would order again. Annin dofu - this one was unique. Very almond heavy (not a bad thing). This is the only item I wouldn't get again. The tofu was tasty but I think a lot was going on with this dessert. There was a lot of texture, flavors, and color Not sure if this is normal for this dessert lots going on. there were mochi bits, tofu, matcha sauce, granola, raisins, dried strawberries(?).
