Been here 3 times now and the Big 3 never disappoint. Nik, Gryphon, and Nick always come with more energy, more knowledge and more creativity! Service is always top notch and the music sets the tone for the evening. Everything is delicious but the 2 things that stood out the most this time around were the Lamb Tagliolini & the caviar add on with a walnut cream sauce. Happy we can have such an amazing dining experience so close to home (It gets tiring having to go into SF all the time)! See you for the fall menu!!!

We had such a great experience here! The menu is a Japanese-inspired tasting menu that changes regularly based on what's available at the market, which makes it feel really unique and seasonal. Every dish was creative, beautifully presented, and clearly put together with a lot of thought and care. They mentioned they had some hiccups with opening due to logistics but should be open for good now. One of my favorite parts was getting to chat with Chef Nik while he was preparing the food. He's incredibly friendly and happy to talk about the dishes, ingredients, and his process, which made the meal feel much more personal. He even picked certain ingredients because they were his favorite (oysters) or because they elicited childhood memories (fiddle leaf fern). The whole team was welcoming and down-to-earth. The service was attentive without being overly formal or stuffy, and everyone genuinely seemed happy to be there. It's the kind of place that delivers an amazing dining experience while still feeling relaxed and comfortable. We'll definitely be back to see what they're serving next!

Had a chance to try this new place by the dumpling time/niku steakhouse team. Setting is intimate counter seating only which is a great way to have dinner and a show. Chef Nick and his team were great and it was fun to watch them at work. I appreciated the thorough explanations and informal discussions about his background, training, and inspiration for the food. I also love that they focus on local sources with much of his ingredients from the California Avenue weekend farmers market. Some of these dishes were amazing (I loved the pasta dish and truly reflects chef Nicks training in northern Italy), some were ok. There were 3 supplements available- we tried the spot prawn, which was delicious , but with tax/tip, came out to ~ $38 for a single prawn. The portion sizes were reasonable and I was pleasantly surprised with two slices of the lamb, which while a bit fatty, was cooked perfectly. The pace of the dinner service could be improved. Two guests were late, so the entire dinner service had to wait, which for us that arrived a few minutes early, meant we sat for about 20+ min before the first course. I also appreciate that chef Nick individually explained the supplements to each party personally, but that meant he was repeating the same thing about 6 times. Overall, good experience and nice addition to Stanford mall.

Had an amazing dinner at Kappo last night. Every bite was A+ and the intimate setting means you're having a dialogue with the chefs and learning about the techniques and provenance of everything you're eating. I also recommend the wine pairing--the thoughtfully crafted options really complement the food. I bet this place will get a Michelin star soon so get in while you can.

Stanford Shopping Center just welcomed a 12 seat culinary experience that feels more like a private chef's table than a mall restaurant. It's right beside dumpling time. Kappo is an intimate Kappo-style tasting menu, blending chef Nik's time at two Michelin-starred Birdsong and Michelin-starred Niku Steakhouse into a seasonal Japanese/ California-driven menu. Think ocean, forest, and farmers market, all plated up close right infront of you. At $140 for 9 courses, the experience feels thoughtfully curated and approachable for the quality. Highlights for me: Ink Noodles with Monterey squid, which has a deep, savory complexity, especially with generous truffle shavings added on. Seaweed soup: nice ocean sweetness mixed with savory dash and meaty notes. Luna Koshihikari Rice and melt-in-your-mouth black cod with optional caviar add-on, although I prefer the original with ikura. Umpqua Valley Lamb that absolutely stole the show with Mole sauce Cast-iron dumpling, a fun and elevated take on takoyaki (Japanese street food). Optional: You can elevate the dishes like I did, with caviar, truffle or wagyu, if you're feeling fncy. It's communal, cozy and a unique Bay Area dining experience well worth your time! I had an awesome birthday meal here, celebrating with a chocolate cake from the Kappo team. Thank you for a special meal!

Kappo is the newest chef tasting restaurant at the Stanford Shopping Center, offering an intimate counter experience where Chef Nik highlights local, foraged ingredients. The menu even tracks the "miles" each ingredient traveled to get to your plate. The full progression was impressive: * Kohlrabi Crudité and Pickled Daikon * Shigoku Oyster with Douglas fir oil and pine ponzu * Seaweed Soup (dashi base with wild foraged nasturtium) * Ink Noodles with Monterey squid (we added the Perigord black truffles, so incredible!) * Luna Koshihikari Rice with Black Cod (highly recommend adding the caviar) * Cast-Iron Dumplings with A5 wagyu short rib * Umpqua Valley Lamb with artichoke * Eton Mess with citrus and locally grown pistachio Everything course was 10/10. The Ink Noodles and Black Cod Rice were my favorites of the night. Great service, thoughtful, high-end, and exactly what the Palo Alto food scene needed.

Lovely concept - Japanese style counter top where the chef socialize and serve you but with local ingredients and dishes Perfect atmosphere for a lively but elegant meal. All the food was delicious though the rice bowl was a bit too rich. The service was good though they did spill some sake when pouring and I was surprised they didn't replace it so they must not have realized I also wish they were more tactful about the supplements. In Japan they would lay out the ingredients in a wooden box and mention in before taking it away rather than shout asking who wants each time which i found a little tacky Hope they make some adjustments cause this place could be a real game changer for the area

Stanford Shopping Center has become a proving ground for ambition lately, a glossy corridor where new restaurants arrive with confidence and--often--crowds. Kappo, which opened quietly last December, has already lived a small drama of anticipation: reservations made, then abruptly canceled when the restaurant shuttered just as quickly as it appeared. When it finally reopened last week, curiosity demanded a visit. Tucked discreetly between Dumpling Time and Zaytinya, Kappo is an intimate, high-stakes stage. It feels like a traditional Japanese omakase experience but with a playful California soul. Executive Chef Nikolas Neuwirt is right there behind the counter, making the whole meal feel like a private performance. The standout dish was a meat dumpling cooked in a takoyaki-style pan. Crispy on the outside, juicy inside, with a house-made ketchup that adds just the right touch of sweetness. Familiar flavors, but done in a smart, slightly unexpected way. The main hiccup wasn't the food but the pacing. With such a small counter, timing matters, and a few late arrivals (thanks to the notoriously difficult parking situation at Stanford Shopping Center) threw off the rhythm between dishes. Once things fell out of sync, the meal felt a bit stop-and-go. Overall, a very solid experience with a lot of potential. The food is thoughtful, the vibe is intimate, and I'd definitely come back. Pro tip: arrive early--parking at Stanford Shopping Center during dinner hours is no joke.

This new gem of fine dining at Stanford Mall, only recently opened, delivered a memorable dining experience. The team, led by Chef Nik and manager Nick, delivered an innovative delicious tasting menu with local ingredients, many foraged by the Chef. The wine pairings were also wonderful. We will be back many times I expect.

My friend made reservations so we were seated right away at 7pm on a Monday. Obviously, we had to ask our server about BTS's experience here and lo and behold, we were sitting in the exact same spot as they did. What are the odds??? Our server also kept us entertained with some fun BTS stories throughout the night which honestly made the experience even better. Shoutout to Jesse for indulging us and keeping the BTS hype alive! As for the food, we shared the butter lettuce and kale salads, the sausage and honey pizza, and the margherita pizza. The salads were surprisingly memorable, especially the jalapeno-pickled raisins! We were still a little hungry afterward so Jesse picked our third pizza for us: the seasonal peach and smoked applewood bacon pizza. Honestly, this was probably my favorite! The sweetness of the fresh peaches paired so well with the savory bacon and balsamic glaze. Each pizza had something unique going on and the ingredients tasted super fresh. My only critique is that the pizzas were all pretty loaded with toppings and sauce, making the slices a little droopy and soggy. Also, our group of 4 needed that third pizza to feel fully satisfied; but maybe we were just extra hungry that night! 4/5 for the food but 5/5 for the service and overall experience!

I got 2 quesobirria tacos and 2 tacos al pastor, and visually everything looked on point -- the plating was clean, tacos looked well-stuffed, and the birria tortillas had that nice golden crisp. But once we started eating, we all felt the same thing: the salsas were lacking flavor. And with tacos like these, good salsa takes everything to the next level. Here, it kind of held them back. They only gave me two tiny lime pieces, and I couldn't even get enough juice out of them to brighten up the tacos. Something so simple, but it makes a huge difference. We also asked for chips and salsa (they're not free), and they never came. Honest mistake -- they were cool about it and took it off the bill -- but still, it added to the overall experience. Another thing: the nopales weren't well cooked or prepped. They had that slightly tough, raw texture instead of the tender, seasoned bite they should have. Flavor-wise, the pastor and birria were decent, but with weak salsa and barely any lime, it felt incomplete. All four of us agreed on the same thing: This place could be great if they tighten up their salsas and the little details. I'd give them another shot someday because the base is there -- they just need that extra punch of flavor to really elevate their tacos.

My son was home visiting and one of his food requests was tapas, specifically Iberico ham. I think I had been here long ago when it was still in Menlo Park. Anyway let's get right to the food. My son and I had done a deep dive (not so his dad) and preplanned what we were most interested in. Drinks: El Martini , Old Fashioned, and Side Car, all between $17.25-18.75: 4*- all good, pretty much standard issue, STIFF PAELLA de MARISCOS (we 3 shared the small) $61.90 - saffron rice with prawns, lobster, cuttlefish, bay scallops, squid, baby octopus, sea scallops and clams: 3.5*. We thought it was delcious, especially the tender clams and cuttlefish. It was a little oily, but the disappointing part was almost no socarrat! boo! Txipirones en suTinta - squid stuffed with tomatoes & sausage, braised in wine and its ink. $22.90 - 4.5*: I didn't expect the whole thing to be entirely black. I liked it but a little too soupy. 100% Jamón Iberico de Bellota Black Label - country bread rubbed with tomato, topped with the iconic ham of the black hoofed Iberian pig. $32.80 - 5+*: OMG. every part so tasty, and the ham almost melts in your mouth alcauciles con champiñones - baby artichokes sautéed with chanterelle mushrooms, amontillado sherry and cured ham (opt.) $21.65- 4.5*: This was not at all attractive to look at. I needed some other color on the plate besides light brownish green. The taste was delicious, the best aspects of earthy mushrooms and sweet young artichokes. Pulpo a la Brasa - grilled octopus; bean and piquillo pepper salad with capers, basil and shallots. $29.85 - 5 *: I loved the octopus, although it could have benefitted from a little more char. The beans, however almost upstaged the pulpo. Absolutely wonderful. Vieiras con Espuma de Salmón - griddled Hokaido scallops on smoked salmon mousse toast. $25.70 - 3.5*: The scallops were perfectly cooked, but definitely over salted. The salmon "mousse" wasn't a mousse at all it was about the consistency of a thin sour cream, like crema, and only a small amount. I didn't note any smoked flavor. The service was fast, friendly and knowledgeable, except for the busser, who was pretty much silent and no smiles even when we tried to engage her, but maybe she didn't speak English. The dining room isn't very big and there was a large table of like 12 coworkers, one of whom spoke and laughed incredibly loudly, but that's not the restaurant's fault. Food: 34/40 Service: 17/20 Value: 16/20 Atm/Intangibles: 16/20 Overall: 83/100 As I knew it would be, it was expensive, and like others, I'm not sure I think the 22% compulsory service fee is fair. We ended up at about $380 including drinks, tax, and the service charge. The host/owner is charming.
