This review is based on two recent visits. First, you may or may not find parking because this place is often busy - if the lot is full, you can try finding the often impossible street parking. Second, there is almost always a long line to order food, but it moves. The food and coffee are great and there are plenty of options. My favorites are the mallorca bread sandwich but they have many other pastries, sandwiches, soups, etc. Don't leave without buying freshly made bread. In the end, their offering is good but the value you are getting for the price keeps shrinking - the prices are much higher than other similar bakeries. read more

Omg--why did it take me till day 3 in San Juan to find this corner of heaven? I love Spanish sandwiches, and they are absolutely to die for here. My girlfriend had the Mallorca and loved it, but the jamon serrano with cheese was more than enough for me. But, it wasn't cheap, each bill came out to about $30-$50 for desserts serving 2-3 people! We came here two days on our trip for breakfast. The restaurant is cafeteria style. The employees speak pretty good English so it's not too hard to order. Sandwich's are ordered in the back, pastry's are ordered by the counter they are displayed at. The coffee here was outstanding. Would definitely recommend trying a few things. It's great an all but nothing out of the ordinary. It's actually overpriced. I found the same quality of food all over Puerto Rico. O guess you're paying for the trending location. The jamon y queso sandwich was just the same as every other except you'll pay an extra 7 or 8 bucks for it here. And the cafe con leche was tiny and they charge $4, I had the same but bigger cup of coffee nearby for $2! The place is very spacious. They have tables at sufficient distance as per COVID-19 regulations. The temperature is checked at the entrance and they also give you sanitizer. I only had a pastry here. For some time it wasn't clear if the waiter is going to come or not. I saw him coming to other tables but he didn't come to mine. I ended up ordering from the bar. The prices are a little high for self service. I paid about $5 for a pastry with coconut. It tastes okay, too sweet to my taste. Didn't finish it. They seem to have good working hours. We went here to grab a little dessert after dinner. There were a lot of people there having dinner and dessert. It seems like a very popular spot for locals. Our friend who lives here knew of the place and loved it. He said it was more about the atmosphere and the people than the food. I agree. My wife and I each ordered a different dessert, and both of them were dry, seeming like they'd been in the case a long time. The desserts weren't very good or worth the calories, but the atmosphere was very fun and we enjoyed seeing families together and a bunch of beautiful people. The folks that were eating lunch or dinner looked like they were enjoying their soups and sandwiches, and our friend told us of the meals here were very good, better than the pastries. Kudos that President Obama visited you back in 2011. I admire that you maintain the vax card venting process strict and try your best to keep the store tidy and clean. However, I can't get pass what happened to me today at the door. I was looking for a trash can while stepping out the door. I saw there was one to my left about 5 feet away in the parking lot so I turned to walk there when the gentlemen who was checking everyone's vax card at the door stopped me and told me not to go that way. I told him that I was just throwing my empty box into the trash can. He told me no and pointed me the way that I needed to walk around the store to Walgreens next door to throw my item there. I did. Then I came back to wait for my friends by the door. During that 10 minutes, there had been at least five people (white, black, and local) walking the same way I was going to to throw their trash into the trash can. The gentleman did not stop any of them while busy or not busy. I confronted the gentleman and he started to pretend that he couldn't understand me at all. I came across possible racist behavior towards me at times ever since I moved to this country. But even experiencing it in a beautiful city like San Juan, PR in the last day I'm visiting for the first time? Not cool. read more

This place has become somewhat of a landmark after President Obama's visit and was only a 5 min walk from our Airbnb so we had to try it. There are so many sweet and savory options to choose from but unfortunately we couldn't find a menu in English and there weren't any placards describing the items on display either. Staff here is very busy so we had to use our best judgement to pick something and ended up getting the mallorca breakfast sandwiches, el pollo fajita, empanada and cappuccinos. Kasalta is a large cafeteria-style restaurant on Calle McLeary and steps from the beach. Customers can move from counter to counter and select items to purchase. The biggest draw is its baked goods. The lines extended almost to the door as people chose their favorite pastries, breads, and cakes. Patrons can also select deli items, soups and sandwiches, which were pretty good, but not what I expected. We split the Mallorca jamon queso and huevo sando with sancocho, shrimp salad and flan. The sandwich bread stood out- She said it tasted like Christmas stollen with powdered sugar and that was unique. If you want food- go to the farthest end after you enter (usually a line). If you just want coffee and a pastry or something sweet, go to the middle. Then meat counter is near the entrance! I love the area. So fun to walk to and get morning coffee. There is parking too. There is a lot of seating too. read more

Solid bakery, we stopped twice during our short trip. There are two lines - one for the bakery, and one at the end for sandwiches. We tried a few things - favorites were the empanadas, quesitos (amazing fresh), and the 5 milk flan. This is a good little bakery, a little bit outside the main area of San Juan. We stopped in for breakfast, and as others have pointed out, the ordering system is a little confusing. Mostly, you pick items out from the glass cases in front of you, but they're not really well labeled. (So, unless you know the name of a pastry, it's hard to order). Not only is it a big bakery but it was jammed packed at 8:30am! I noticed Kasalta attracts both locals and tourist because I saw plenty of regulars picking up a loaf of bread and coffee. Well had to visit this place and see what is so great that it made it to Barrack Obama's must visit place during his trip to Puerto Rico. This is a huge local bakery serving Puerto Ricon treats, sandwiches, juices, etc. They have a huge display and you can pick whatever you want from that and enjoy. We went all crazy while ordering here and ordered empanadas (the best I have eaten during my stay in PR), croquettes (delicious), some rice pudding cups, mallorcas (freshly baked semi sweet bread), chocolate cookies (divine), some custard cakes as well. We loved everything we ordered. they have something for everyone - sweet, savory, everything. The prices are also great! Service was fast. I was so excited to try this place and I was let down by the immediate discrimination I experienced in this bakery. The woman who took my order had the nastiest attitude towards me. She acted like she didn't even want to take my order and while I opened my bag to take out my credit card which did not even take 20 seconds, she said "hello? hello??" as if I was not actively paying attention. Then, she overcharged me for what I ordered. I went back and got a refund from a nice male employee. This lady only acted rude to me and another American girl in line behind me. It was a bit confusing to know where to order. My suggestion is they add signs with arrows due to how enlongated the counter is setup. Too much ham over powered the sandwich and it was made with fake cheese. The bread is traditional bread and was made locally. 2. Orange juice - 10 out of 10. Its freshly squeezed but brought in from a local vendor who does it. 3. Rice pudding - 2 out of 10. I spent 8 dollars for a pound of sugar! I wa only able to have 2 bites. We visit the store twice. I do not speak Spanish so it's important for me that the staff can communicate in English. 1st time in the morning: it has a good vibe and a lot of people. Staff are friendly and speak English well. However, it's expensive and the menu is not great in my opinion for a brunch place. I would rate it 4 stars 2nd time: it was in the evening and the service quality is bad. Staffs do not speak English and very slow. They also charge my credit card twice. Big, casual cafeteria with okay-pastries. My husband and I were hanging by this area and wanted dessert after getting lunch at La Cueva del Mar (which I highly highly recommend). They had a VERY extensive selection of different cakes (spicy pepper cake, tres leches cake, etc) and different pastries (croissants and danishes). It seemed like the place was separated into 3-different sections- deli meat, pastries, and food/cafe section. The food/cafe section sold food from sandwiches to soups and it seemed to attract a lot of local people who work there for a quick lunch. They also sell coffee and afternoon-pick-me-up drinks. I tried the pepper cake and a cinnamon-sugar cake. They were both okay. Kind of on the drier side... I wouldn't say I would go back and order them again. Known for Puerto Rican favorites, with Spanish and Cuban influence also evident, diners are encouraged to peruse options before queuing, the number of choices easily surpassing one-hundred and many of the baked or fried goods unlabeled. Fair priced and fast paced, orders from each line followed by a brief wait as Food is prepared fresh, do not skip on some of Puerto Rico's best Coffee, piping hot with Milk pairing well with a beautifully caramelized Quesito and the world-famous Mallorca that comes loaded with good Ham and melted Swiss on housemade Sweet Bread. Next taking a look at fried Foods, Alcapurrias tempting but losing out to creamy Cod Fritters, suffice it to say that Almond Pudding is one of Kasalta's under-discussed gems while the individual Key Lime Pie deserves praise for balancing sweet and tart with toasted Coconut added for texture.
