Cheese Sandwiche and scrambled eggs were decent, nothing great. We ordered 3 popular desserts, the one with coconut was tasty.

Their pastries are good, we've come back a couple of times to try different ones. I have no idea what they were but everything so far has been good. We had breakfast there once. I ordered the scrambled eggs and it came with their baguette bread. There had to be 5 or 6 eggs scrambled on my plate. Seriously. They were a little bit overdone for me, *they were brown, and I don't like my eggs cooked brown*. My husband and I split an order of pancakes and they were really good. I couldn't finish all of my meal and neither could my husband. It was busy, but everyone spoke English or grabbed someone who else who could help us. Oh, and you wait on your own drinks and food if you order from the counter. Just move off to the side a bit until your order is complete. read more

Kasalta (a bit over prized) is great for breakfast (anytime), lunch or dinner. You can either go to the counter and order your food or you can sit and get served. Order pancakes (they are delicious: flavorful and fluffy), scrambled eggs with toasts or their tortilla española for breakfast. For lunch or dinner salmon is GREAT, with rice and beans or boiled potatoes . Ask for the avocado salad Pastries, even thou they all look amazing, they are not the best but I always recommend the tiramisu and tres leches (those are the best they do). Also the meat or chicken turnovers are incredibly good, ask them to warm them up before digging into those flaky, savory and delicious diet wrecker things. read more

I grew up in PR and to me this is the best bakery. It's Spaniard roots make it more traditional to our ancestors. The food is fantastic! Coffee is local and they use local cow milk for it. The pastries are amazing and the soups! The soups! If you are a soup nazi/snob you would not be disappointed. My fave is the Caldo Gallego. So if you are in PR, make a pit stop here. The line was like the line you wait for a Disney ride. My cat has a better attitude than the cashier. I asked if they had fresh squeezed orange juice and she said they only have "jugo de china". I asked her what is that and she just repeated "jugo de china". Ok. $3.75 for tropicana OJ. You can probably hurt someone if you throw the bread at them. Bread is hard and the food looks old. I ordered a medium sized coffee and it looks like an extra small. More like a cortadito. For the price, definitely not worth it. I would come back because the food was memorable. Especially the jamón cerrano sandwich and the guava with coconut pastry and amazing Cuban coffee. However the service had its challenges as we went there twice and noticed that the place has rules on where to sit or not sit if you are there for dinner or for pastries. So it was confusing and there were different lines to order and honestly it was difficult to find parking and difficult to know where exactly to order or who was to take your order. And the staff was not very friendly. Maybe it was because they were so busy but still you want to have some basic info when you walk in and they did not seem very happy or accommodating Maybe the third time will be better. read more

Idk about their food because i only tried their desserts and bread. Their quesitos was fantastic! Their bread with powdered sugar on it wasnt that good, a wee dry on the inside. Kasalta is evidently a popular place for everyone in the neighborhood. Fortunately there's plenty of seating in their large, air conditioned space. I have to eat gluten free, so I can't comment on 95% of their wheat-based baked goods (although my sweetie enjoyed the bread which came with our scrambled eggs one morning). But... their creme brulee was *amazing*. Combined with an inexpensive but well-prepared cafe americano, this became a snack we'd find any excuse to stop for! read more

We stayed in San Juan for two nights, bookending our cruise. We were walking back from dinner the first night and decided to pop in for dessert. Everything was wonderful. The fruit tarts, coconut wedge cake, chocolate mouse, oreo cake, all of it was delicious. So much so that on the last night we were there we had uber bring us from our dinner restaurant back here, got dessert and then walked 1.5 miles home from there. It was delicious and I would go out of my way to stop here again next time we are in San Juan. read more

I searched for 3 days during my visit for Tres Leches and everyone was sold out. I woke up super early to check this place out as it was suggested to me as a good bakery. It certainly was! I ordered the ham and cheese on mallorca bread, tres leches and cafe con leche with a side shot of espresso! Omg it was so good and good prices. The guy at the counter was very friendly and didn't rush me to place my order quickly. I also found out the place was very popular already in PR and Obama paid it a visit recently. read more

I came here because former President, Barack Obama had lunch there. I was very disappointed...I ordered the shrimp tacos and they definitely were not what I was expecting. The shrimp were like popcorn shrimp. Maybe being from LA, my expectations were too high...there were no salsa, guacamole, cilantro or sour cream. Go with the soup + 1/2 sandwich deal. The half sandwich is still huge and the soups are delicious. You can taste the difference between sandwiches made at Kasalta and elsewhere upon the first bite. The ingredients, including the bread, are noticeably fresher. I thought the desserts and pastries were just ok though, but it was interesting to taste so many Cuban desserts that I had never seen before. read more

For a place that is highly visited by tourists, especially President Obama, we even got to sit at the table he sat at!!!, their menu is in Spanish and their staff spoke very little English. We came for breakfast/early lunch. We both got the sandwich/soup combo. The sandwiches were light and soup were yummy. I got one chicken soup and one ham and veggie soup. As far as the sandwiches, we had a tuna and a Cuban. The parking here is a bit tricky, but they have a guy in the lot holding up traffic and helping you locate a spot. Please don't be an American douchebag tourist and skip this place because they don't speak English. Everyone speaks pointing and smiling. I went here every day for a week and tried new things each day, just by looking inquisitive and saying, "Que es eso?" ("What is that?" Which, BTW, is about the extend of my Espagnol.) I didn't always understand the answer, but frankly, who cares? Everything looked crispy and tasty and flaky and sweet and rich and meaty and wonderful. And it was. The older gentleman behind the counter greeted me with a huge smile, a ready question ("cafe con leche?") and patiently told me in perfect Spanish and broken English what was what. read more

What an amazing little cafe. I stumble upon this place unknowingly while strolling along McCleary after an early morning at the beach doing some photography. Came in here and notice that only spanish was spoken and having taken 5 years of German (HS & College), it wasn't going to be of much help. I saw some good looking pastries on the counter and asked for 2 of each. She took my order but instead gave me one of each instead of 2. No big deal. What I ended up getting was some sort of pastry wrapped chorizo. delicious. and In fact it was so good that I went back to my hotel and 45 minutes later, I find myself coming back to get the other stuff on the menu. This time, I actually decided to dine in and lo and behold I see a sign that said President Obama came here for lunch when he was in Puerto Rico. Sweet. So of course I had to try what Mr. El Presidente had. I got the Media Noche sin Queso or you can order it by it's other name. President's Sandwich, in spanish of course. I also got their cafe con leche. Sandwich was great and the cafe con leche was amazing as well. I don't know, $7.50 for a good deli style sandwich was quite a good deal if you ask me. Obama came here to get a sandwich. So I came and ordered the exact same sandwich, which was the medianoche. It was about $9, which was not very cheap. At least this place had AC. The sandwich was ok, the mustard wasn't too overpowering. They also had a variety of soups which looked a little greasy. I tried the apple turnover, which was just ok. We had the privilege of eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner here for a total of about 6 visits. It's been a while since our last, but we remember it fondly. Being able to walk here from a hotel only .5 km away made it the natural choice for every unplanned meal. It's a strange place, in, but not of PR. It's a Basque-esq place frequented by locals, ex-pats, and tourists. It's the only place in SJ that had a great wine selection (that we encountered, I am sure there are more each day). The week we visited, they offered three different Albaren~os. Each married very well with the food. A sad irony of PR is how hard it is to find a decent cup of coffee. Sidney W. Mintz discusses the reasons for this in his seminal Sweetness and Power. The best we had on the whole island was at Kasalta. They had a different vendor (name forgotten) from the other restaurants and knew how to prepare it. Cafeteria-style, they have cured meats hanging in the butcher-section, wonderful-looking cheese and lots of wine and beer choices, but we cruised on past that and ordered yummy cafe con leche y tostada con mantequilla before we headed to the beach. Everything I tried at Kasalta was delicious! My man and I stayed at the nearby Andalucia Guest House and our hosts recommended we try Kasalta. The restaurant offers breakfast, starting at 6am, and stays open quite late. Most of the staff knows just enough English to help you order. I speak no Spanish, however, every staffer at Kasalta was friendly, patient, and helpful. Aside from two visits to the burrito restaurant two doors down, this was the only restaurant in Puerto Rico we ate at more than once. For breakfast, I pretty much ate the same thing everyday: Oatmeal (avena) and revoltillos with ham and veggies. The oatmeal is very different from any oatmeal I've typically eaten. This particular variety has been cooked to death and sweetened. At first, I thought "there's no way in hell I'm going to eat that goopy pool of white slim", but then I tried it... and it was delicious! The revoltillos were also delicious- not at all oily and cooked with fresh veggies. The eggs were served with two hearty slices of bread... but be forewarned, they love to coat the bread in a thick layer of butter. If you don't want some bread with your butter... learn how to specify "no butter" in Spanish. For lunch and dinner, I tired several sandwiches. The cuban was the best! The sugar cured ham sandwich was also delightful. I only sampled one of the soups: garbanzo and chorizo. Delicious! Dessert is where Kasalta really shines. They serve one of the best Flan's I've ever had. Dense, creamy, not too sweet. I can't tell you what else I tired, but everything I sampled was off the charts delicious. The coffee, cafe con leche, was also very good. The staff at Kasalta really rounded up the good experience. A non-Spanish speaker in a Spanish only speaking restaurant could have been a recipe for frustration, mistaken orders, and general unhappiness... however, the staff was pleasantly patient, happy to work with me just simply pointing at something and smiling, and was kind enough to use what little English some could speak to try to help me out. If you're in the Ocean View neighborhood, definitely stop by Kasalta. You won't regret it. read more

I am shocked and awed that reviewers are downgrading their reviews of a wonderful place like Kasalta simply because "no one speaks English." First of all, this is Puerto Rico. Se habla espanol aqui, pero hay muchas personas que hablan ingles tambien. Don't expect that everyone speaks perfect English, and be a good tourist - smile, point at what you want, and just memorize "Buenos dias! Habla usted ingles?" and you will be good to go. Okay, rant over. Based on food and drink merit alone, Kasalta won my heart over. I had bookmarked this awesome coffee/pastry/sandwich stop long before my trip to Puerto Rico, and I'm so glad I was able to walk over and pick up coffee and breakfast to go one morning. Oh, and the total cost for coffees and myriads pastries for 7 people? $32. You're welcome. It's located along a busy street in the Ocean Park neighborhood, so if you're getting your coffee/smoothie/food to go, take a stroll through the nice residential neighborhood, or right over to the beach nearby, and escape the hectic and chaotic seating situation indoors. The gentleman behind the counter was great. I am fluent in Spanish, but the other girls with me aren't, so he spoke Spanish with me, and a little English with my friends. He was helpful in explaining and recommending his favorites from among their mind-boggling selection of cookies, pastries, breads, empanadillas, and sandwiches. What we walked away with were several delicious and rich Puerto Rican coffees, a HUMONGOUS Mallorca pastry, a warm and cheesy "quesito," a few Danishes, a couple of donuts, some sprinkle cookies ("galletita con esprinkles" - ha!), a guava tart (OMG good), and a croissant. All were packaged up for us securely (including the coffee) for our 1/2 mile scenic and beachy walk back to our guesthouse. I really wish I had a cool little neighborhood shop nearby with dark, rich cafecitos and cafe cubano, not to mention fresh-made breads, pastry, and sandwiches. That would be heaven. Until then, I'll just have to return to San Juan and to Kasalta. read more
