    Lamb Shank w Cherry Rice
    Kimberly A.

I had a wonderful lunch at Avesta. The LAMB SHANK w CHERRY RICE was perfectly cooked. The broth was flavorful and hot! The lamb was tender. The cherry rice was sweet and savory. I appreciate the complimentary bread and herb/cheese plate provided at the beginning of the meal. My dining guest ordered the SALMON KEBAB W DILL RICE which was outstanding as well. Perfectly grilled yet moist. The YOGURT SODA DOOGH is an interesting drink - more savory than I thought it was going to be. My daughter described it as similar to drinking minty ranch sauce. The MANGO LASSI was delicious and a bit lighter than the Indian version. The star of the meal were the PERSIAN HUMMUS and DILL LABNEH. Standout dips! Hummus was very garlicky. Labneh was thick and cooling. Next time I will try more of the apps.

Great Persian food. Ordered the lamb sultani. The lamb was flavorful, the ground beef was solid but a little less good, the rice was great and the surprising star of the show was the grilled tomato! (I know, I know, it was just that good) Ordered via delivery, so no view on service or ambiance. My wife had some too, this sultani dish was big enough for two. She liked it even more than I did. Solid 5*. I like being surprised by little delicious extras like the grilled tomatoes and the included flat bread!

Today I tried Avesta Persian grill and omg! It was very delicious. The service was exceptional...kudos to Marvin he was very knowledgeable and was able to guide me through the menu. I wasn't sure what to order since I don't often eat Persian cuisine. I had the Kabob combo with a koobideh skewer added. The flavors and aromas in my face when the food came to the table were making my mouth melt. No regrets coming to Avesta. I'm definitely coming back when I'm in the area again.

Royal Platter for 6. About $107 plus tax and tip.

A Houston treasure. Our group of six guys ordered the Royal Platter. It comes with three styles of rice. The flatbread was excellent. Highly recommended.

I recently catered From Avesta. The food was absolutely delicious. Beef kabob 5/5. Loved the tenderness, juicy and succulent flavor. Accompanied with basmati rice and salad. Chicken kabob 5/5. Also very juicy tender and flavorful. Grilled to perfection. Hummus 5/5. Consistency was key. Smooth textured and very tasty. Accompanied with home made bread. Salad presentation was beautiful. All the guest throughly enjoyed the food. The employees brought all the trays to my car and placed it in the trunk. The ambiance was nice. Very spacious from inside. Nice decor.

I've been recommended this place multiple times and I'm so glad i finally got around to trying it. Avesta was delicious and it definitely fulfilled my Persian food craving. We got the persian hummus, mast museer as our two dips, a fattoush salad, and the lamb shish kabob to share. The persian hummus was super flavorful. It was really well seasoned with garlic and cumin. Some of the best hummus I've had a a perfect dip to pair with the meal. (8/10) The mast museer tasted just like a yogurt with the essence of grilled shallots. There was a subtle after taste where you can taste the shallots but it was not mixed throughout the yogurt as I had expected. It was fine, but nothing outstanding. (6/10) The fattoush salad was delicious and I was really happy with the large portion. It was perfect to share and very fresh. I also liked how the vegetables were not just tossed in dressing but actually well-seasoned. (7.5/10) The lamb shish kabob was a huge portion and I loved how the staff already separated the portion on to two plates for me and my friend to share. The chicken was super moist and tender and the grilled vegetables were nicely charred. The lamb, however, was a bit tougher than I like but the flavor was there. (7.8/10) The food tasted great and was reasonably priced, the portions are generous, and the staff was very attentive. I also loved the ambiance of the place. The decor was nice and modern and the vibe was very warm and inviting. I would definitely come back for more!

Highly recommended. All entrees are $15-18 and portion was really big that we could not finish. Tastes good and you feel like you are eating healthy food.

First time coming to the new location, much bigger than the old one, congrats! Avesta is one of my top 3 Persian places to go to. Mango lasee was top tier, not too sweet. Kubideh portion was HUGE! a lot of rice than what I need. The meat was soft and flavorful they give 1 small tomatoe on the side. We got seated pretty quickly and served immediately. Place is super casual.

What an excellent friendly and delicious spot ! Very clean space and service was quick. Great tasting complimentary bread. We will be back for the wonderful food here!

Koobideh Combination plate: Chicken Koobideh, Beef Koobideh, Basmati Rice

Avesta is a relatively new gem to me, but after about a year and a half, I've dined here a handful of times since this is a favorite of the friend group. Avesta brings serious competition to nearby Kasra, and I think I actually like Avesta just a liiiiittle bit more. Our experience this latest visit was excellent. Our reserved table for 10 was already set up with cold waters and cups for hot tea waiting. The Persian Bread with the Persian Hummus was so so so good. I couldn't restrain myself from eating it, and was nearly full once the food came out. This is my equivalent of chips & salsa in a Mexican restaurant. The bread dipped in hummus, topped with some cucumber, cheese square, and basil is chef's kiss. Fun fact: while traditional Mediterranean hummus is made with chickpeas, Persian Hummus is made with garbanzo beans. I ordered the Koobideh Combination plate, which came with beef koobideh, chicken koobideh, and basmati rice. As soon as my plate came out, I spread the butter all over the meat and rice to step up the flavor! This plate is my go-to whenever coming here, and it was just as good as all the other times I've had it. Both of our servers were extremely friendly and dedicated, and took extremely good care of our big group on a weeknight. They came around often to refill our hot teas, bring us more Persian Bread, and just ensure that we were having a good time. I had brought a cheesecake for our group to share after our meal. The waitstaff graciously held it in the refrigerator while we dined and brought it out at the end of the meal for us with serving plates and forks. We've seen our same servers' friendly faces on previous visits, and look forward to seeing them again next time! The hot tea is a must. For the rare cold night in Houston, this hits the spot. Don't forget to add in a sugar cube or two from the included sugar bowl! My friend substituted a side salad in lieu of rice, which looked really tasty! I will have to try that next time - while the rice here is delicious, the side salad would likely be less filling. We will definitely be back at Avesta soon. This is in the rotation of our friend group's get together and it will continue to be! I have always mentally noted trying the lamb shank next time, but always find myself going back to the koobideh!

Nut allergy warning: The Fensenjan is made with walnuts, so avoid that. The cherry rice and several appetizers also come with nuts. Time to Appetizers: 15 Minutes Time to Royal Platters: 40 Minutes I reserved about two weeks ahead of time for a Monday night with a party of 15-20 as we were uncertain about attendance. They lost my reservation when I arrived 15 minutes early. Another party of 10 also arrived right after I did. Their reservation also seemed to get lost. We were seated in reasonable time, although it took quite a while to get our orders, and the kitchen did run out of pita bread during our meal. For 14 people, we ordered 2 of the hummus, 2 of the baba ghanoush, and 2 of the Royal Platter for Six. It was just enough food all around, with a few leftover chicken pieces. The food is absolutely great - very reasonable prices; pita went great with the hummus and baba ghanoush, and the meats were incredibly flavorful and filling with the rice. Service during our meal was reasonable for how busy the restaurant suddenly got. We could've used more water refills but did manage eventually. Overall, a really solid and affordable option for larger groups who have the time for an extended meal, but I'd definitely call and confirm your reservation.

Lamb Shank with Eggplant stew - absolutely delicious
    David B.

Another exceptional meal from this delectable well managed Persian restaurant. The lamb tank stew was delicious extra extraordinarily flavorful and provided a depth of flavor rarely achieved. The roasted lamb shank was equally delicious provided with an incredible selection of rice. The boys are able to split the chicken kebab plate as it has plenty of chicken and an exorbitant serving of rice with roasted vegetables. They have a sweet and rich mango lassi which is the perfect accompaniment to any meal. The service is fantastic and they keep checking to ensure you have an exceptional experience. Best to ask to be in Ahmad and Kevin's section... They treat everyone exceptionally well, ensuring your glass is never empty, and you're completely satisfied. The restaurant is always clean and well-maintained with a very lovely decor. The music is called to a background level so talking is very easy amongst the table.

We tried the turkey, brisket, and jalapeño sausage, and every one of them was delicious. The brisket was especially impressive--moist, incredibly tender, and so soft you didn't even need a knife to cut it. The sides were very good, but the meats were definitely the highlight of the meal. One thing we really appreciated was the toppings bar, which included pickles, onions, pickled onions, jalapeños, and two different barbecue sauces so you could customize each bite. They even had a mini soft-serve ice cream machine for a little dessert after your meal, which was a nice touch. They also offer family meal options, making it a great choice for larger groups. The soccer ball was photogenic but it should be both with the level of sophistication in taste they acquire in their craft. It was reminiscent of a Cadbury egg. Just the peaches and the chocolate were unimpressive and not complimentary of each other. The tuna papad was amazing. Some subtle hints of aromatic Indian flavors and and sweetness. The contrast of crisp and soft and presented well. That's how I expected each dish. The rizala was creamy but not exciting with bold flavors like I was hoping. The lamb was inconsistent. One of them was tough and texture/taste off. The rest were tender but not flavorful enough in seasoning. Tried a new naan. Nimbu it was ok but too thin for naan and the lemon essence didn't really spread well across. Mango pina colada was nice. Quite disappointing for $220 though. Possible I just ordered terribly. We ain't in Queens anymore…read more For years, I've eaten on Shah's all around the borough, initially out in Ozone Park and Briarwood before finding a real audience in Sunnyside. Now that they've sufficiently blown up around NYC, I was a bit shocked (and excited) to see them finally come to H-Town. What's the verdict? It's good enough to pass muster for NY standards (#1), is open super late, and will likely be my go-to Halal food for the foreseeable future. Since I've only had it in cart form, I'm still a buggin over the fact it's become a franchise. It's similar to my shock of eating Halal Guys at a store for the first time. The digs feel as foreign (prices, large, clean and bright interior) as it does familiar (taste, logo, etc.). Even though I had a laugh seeing the wall photo-mural of a Shah's cart in Times Square, I did appreciate the nod to Ozone Park with the 121st & Liberty street signs. The chicken + lamb combo platter ($12) is and always will be the winner. The lamb had the same kind of seasoning that most Halal spots out here try to replicate but can never get right. The rice was fluffy, and the white sauce was easily the highlight. I can understand why they've decided to bottle it up and sell it as liquid gold. It makes every meal better. Kofta ($12) and chapli ($13) are rarely my favorites, but I knew I had both in platter form. The addition of adding chickpeas and these other salads is not something I'm used to from the carts (#2) but I loved the fact it was drowned in the white sauce with a dash of hot sauce. The latter is supposedly extremely hot, but I didn't find it that spicy. While I have to say the cheeseburger was a bit of a disappointment (overly bready, thin patty), the pakora chips and french fries were fabulous. They were perfectly seasoned, had a nice crisp, and frankly would be an excellent, gut-busting addition to any platter. I don't love the extra charge, but I hope they remain consistent with it. This store location in Westchase along Westheimer is an up and coming part of town. There are numerous Middle Eastern businesses in the adjacent area, along with an abundance of parking spots and a good amount of late night activity. Service was friendly but I do hope they keep their standards up. We were provided menus and started ordering everything that sounded good (within reason for 2, sorta). We ended up getting the Uyghur polo with lamb shank, Uyghur goshnaan, korma chop, garlic cucumbers, mint tea, and a yogurt for dessert. This was more than enough food for 2 but I wanted to try a bunch and this is me holding back. The Uyghur goshnaan was very crispy and the filling was flavorful and juicy, good lamb flavor and nice spices. The Uyghur polo with lamb shank was great and the pilaf had a nice sweetness with raisins that cut through some of the fatty richness of the lamb. The korma chop was also super flavorful with a nice savory sauce and noodled with an excellent texture, very QQ. I don't usually order cucumbers at Asian restaurants cause I can make a cucumber salad pretty easily at home but the one here was very good. Excellent refreshing crunch and garlic flavor to go with all the other dishes. The mint tea was also nice to wash down the mountains of food I was inhaling. I also enjoyed the yogurt, it's a thicker yogurt like a Greek yogurt and topped with honey and raisins. Again, a nice sweet/tart treat that didn't feel too heavy after everything else. I definitely need to come back as I didn't even get my big plate chicken but it'll be hard to choose between all the options. I def recommend this spot, esp if you like lamb as all the dishes we had were excellent and priced fairly for the portion and current economic situation.
