The all you can eat was great! I enjoyed 3 full special rolls and an order of crab rangoons. They weren't loaded with a ton of rice and had plenty of tuna, shrimp, salmon inside and out. It took a little longer to come out but I wasn't in a rush and worth the wait. I liked them all and were super fresh. Each roll had 8 larger pieces. $30 might seem a bit high but considering if I ordered everything separately, it would have been $55. Definitely will be back for sushi! read more

This is a great AYCE sushi spot. I haven't been here in about a year, but they redid the AYCE menu with more appetizers at some point, and they have some yummy options I haven't seen at other AYCE places. The restaurant is clean, the fish is fresh, and the service was great. There was one server taking care of the whole restaurant, and he made sure to keep the food coming quickly. All that being said, it is still an AYCE place. You cannot come here expecting what you get at a regular sushi restaurant. There will be lots of rice in your rolls. The sashimi pieces are very small, but most AYCE around here don't even offer sashimi. Come here with the right expectations, and you'll love it! read more

Easily the best AYCE sushi in Pittsburgh. Not even up for debate I was hesitant on going here for awhile because Google and Yelp do this place DIRTY but always make sure to ACTUALLY read the reviews. Most of the low ones are 5+ years old and then people bitching about taking too long to get food when it's either packed or ordered at a table of 5 I got: Yellowtail Tuna roll Rainbow x2 Dragon Spicy 2 Snow White x2 Phoenix Orange dragon Seaweed salad AYCE quality is what it is. It's not the reason you go. But some places like Sushi Bomb manage to make the quality even worse which is even more impressive. Our first visit to Katana! He had several sushi Rolls including spicy salmon. I had veggie hibachi with noodles. So good. I love the clear soup and that ginger sesame dressing on the salad. The veggies were perfectly done and nicely seared. The pair of shrimp and noodles good too. Beware - these hibachi veg and lo mean come SAUCY - caught me off guard as this style is usually more dry from the grill. They were pretty bust. Nice dining room, lots of takeout orders too. First time ever leaving a review for any type of establishment... they are rude, condescending, to top it off I told them I could not have the seasoning on my food and just wanted it plain. He said "no, there will be no taste" that was fine with me because I use the yum yum sauce. He hung up on me! Just lost a first time and potentially regular customer. Shame on you! Would avoid this place for AYCE. Food wise for ordering is prob standard/average. We came for ayce in the evening and there was like one chef so imagine 4-6 tables (which weren't even that many for what this place can seat) ordering multiple sushi items. Took quite some time for the food which you can imagine. Overall it wasn't like bad. The most egregious thing though is they write you are not allowed to waste rice and then they proceed to make their sushi with a tiny piece of fish and literally a fistful of rice. I would say the rice was about 3-4x the amount you would get on an actual piece of sushi. Their fried dishes were otherwise quite good. I'd give like 4 stars for their fried dishes and then 1 star for sushi. Fish looked old, not fresh. Salmon was like ick. Rather eat Costco salmon raw. Our first time ordering from Katana through GrubHub this past Monday night. We had the orange beef, chicken lo mein, and pork eggrolls. Honestly, everything tasted really good... until it started coming back out of us with a vengeance about 5am Tuesday morning. Worst food poisoning of our lives. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for some yummy sushi! Beyond the sushi, as soon as you walk in you're met with beautiful traditional Chinese artworks in a softly lit and roomy layout. Pros: *Unlike other AYCE establishments, Katana's rolls and nigiri are NOT accompanied by a ridiculous amount of rice. *You can order sashimi (max 15 of each type of fish) so you can save yourself a bunch of rice. *Seaweed salad is pretty good, though slightly sweet. *Friendly and attentive service. Cons: *Rolls aren't particularly tasty. They all taste like variations on supermarket spicy tuna. It is really unfortunate that we were turned away this evening, 12/28/2025. This was our favorite Sushi location in the City. At 4:25 PM, we were refused service due to our service animal. He had a clearly-labeled vest, and we provided the ID demonstrating his training status. We were refused service after this fact. I would hope to educate you on your role as a public business and service animals, as you are a Public location. What is a Service Dog/Animal? "A service animal is any animal that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks that benefit an individual with a disability". --Americans with Disabilities Act 1990, Title III-4.2300 The ADA protects the rights of people with disabilities to be accompanied by their service animals. The majority of the service animals are dogs of various breeds which are trained to perform tasks that are beneficial to the individual with a disability. Service animals may be identified as "assistance animal/dog", "support animal/dog", or "helper dog". Q: I have always had a clearly posted "no pets" policy at my establishment. I have eaten at this restaurant many times over the past 15 years. Until recently I would have given them a 5 star rating. I loved the food, the ambiance and the service. My most recent experience was far below the stellar experiences I've had there in the past. None of the staff working that day spoke or understood enough English to adequately serve us. To make matters worse there was no manager or person in charge and staff could not reach the current "boss/owner" by phone. We were being charged for food that was not prepared as requested and was inedible for us. The police were called in and ended with us appropriately paying for that food which was edible for us, but the Police officer requested that we be banned from the restaurant, which of course means we cannot go back to speak with the owner regarding the matter. You cannot beat the price for all you can eat (AYCE). Most places with AYCE don't allow sashimi or even limit your sushi orders. Here, you can have up to 15 pieces of sashimi and no other limitations. The service is a bit slow and the ambiance is a little meh, but the employees are nice and sushi good! read more

I've ordered takeout from Katana a handful of times, and my experience has always been a good one. The food is fresh, hot, and very tasty. The Crispy Roll is my favorite sushi item. Try adding asparagus to it, and thank me later :) The hibachi is very flavorful, and portions are good. Some highlights were the chicken and steak hibachi, and the chicken katsu. Haven't been to Katana in a while and wow did they step up their sushi game. It's all you can eat but it's made to order (not buffet style). It was incredibly fresh and I found a new favorite roll that I've never seen anywhere before called the Snow White roll-made with snow crab, avocado and topped with white tuna- so good! AYCE was $23.95 which is a little pricier but for me and my trusty sidekick it was worth it because it was fresher and tastier than we both remembered and it was so close we could walk there. You can also order from some soups and appetizers along with all the sushi but we focused mainly on the sushi. I can't comment on the hibachi or Chinese food since we ate only the sushi. Just moved to the neighborhood - walked here after unpacking for several hours. Famished, and ready to eat some good food! It was late, but I was confident that I could put away some food in a short period of time. The woman in the front explained that they closed at 10, which was fine - she was polite about it. The waitress was great, very attentive and sweet (even though we were officially THOSE people who showed up 40 minutes before closing time) Food was brought out almost immediately, great flavor & quality. Sushi was MOSTLY fish, not MOSTLY rice - it's rare that you find this. My large miso soup was LARGE - enough for two days. All portions were a very nice size. Upon checking out, the woman in the front was pretty much telling off our waitress because she forgot to add my wine to the check - ridiculous if you ask me. They made us swipe our credit card again to pay for the wine - while the woman was still yelling at our server. Honestly, that was the only thing that I could say that was an issue this evening. I ordered take out here on yelp on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. I had the sirloin hibachi meal and a salad. My food was phenomenal and piping hot! I recently had another experience with Katana and figured my review deserved an update. My SO and I normally will default to Jade Grille or Little Tokyo, but a recent trip through Dormont put us in closer proximity to Katana. We picked up an order consisting of a California roll, spicy crunchy tuna roll, Philadelphia roll, beef lo mein, and General Tso's chicken. Our total clocked in right under $40 which I thought to be a pretty good deal for the volume of food we received. Our sushi was fresh and packed nicely - the flavors for all of the rolls were great but we both agreed that the spicy crunchy tuna roll was our favorite. This experience was a nice change-up from my first visit here (see previous review) where I felt that the rice was a bit dried out and the roll sizes varied greatly. I didn't find either of those flaws this time around and will definitely order sushi from here again. I also was pleased with how they packed our order up, as it included soy sauce, wasabi, ginger, and chopsticks without us having to ask for them upon pickup. As for the rest of our order, the beef lo mein was so, so good. The beef was tender and there was a good bit of lo mein to go around seeing as I had two helpings. Our General Tso's did not disappoint either - it was flavorful and had just the right amount of spice. I hate to admit that I usually neglect to consider Katana when trying to pick an Asian restaurant in the South Hills, but this experience was great and I look forward to the next. I've seen other reviews that mention an all-you-can-eat sushi deal which might be my next move, given how great this particular sushi experience was. read more

There wasn't any advertising that they weren't doing it that night and we left very frustrated. I do not recommend this restaurant at all. Reasons below: 1 - I placed an online order for delivery (on 11/17/23). The order was supposed to arrive at my home at 7:15. 2 - it didn't show up, so I called at 7:30 to check on the status 3 - the person that answered the phone at first couldn't find the order, then they hung up, so I called back 4 - they couldn't give me an answer on when the order may arrive, they just kept saying they didn't know (we live 5 minutes away per the GPS) 5 - I paid $123.44 for the order, which included a tip of $19.46 - I called back again at 7:50 and told them I would just come and get it 7 - when I arrived, there was no one in the restaurant except for the workers (which if this is the level of service, I am not surprised) 8 - the order was ready when I arrived (the only good part of this experience) 9 - I asked for my tip back when I arrived, and they told me to reach out to BeyondMenu for resolution, I don't know if this was a lie - but I have reached out. I'd like to at least get some of my money back. 10 - When I arrived home, we were missing the Eel Avocado roll (which obviously wasn't expensive, but still.) 11 - I ordered the most expensive item on the sushi menu - the katana king roll - which is supposed to be king crab, with tobiko. 12 - Imagine my surprise when I removed the tobiko that was piled on each portion, and discovered they had used the regular fake crab, and I can only assume the reason they covered it was to hide this fact. read more

Katana, there was nothing I hated about anything I ordered and everything to love. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. We ordered our top 5 favorites: salmon roe / salmon sushi, shrimp tempura, spicy tuna roll, Philadelphia roll and TWO Snow White rolls. The Snow White roll is that good! I haven't seen that roll anywhere else, which makes Katana's worth the trip. All you can eat sushi available Mon-Thurs. Go early because the special is only available 'til 8:30. We went on a Friday because we had a Snow White craving. Gave 4/5 stars because not most romantic date place, not the sexy sushi vibe of Umami in Lawrenceville. I'll be honest, I was a little skeptical about the 3.5 star rating until I read the poor reviews- most of them were the result of the delivery service. Now, this review is rather on the dine in service, specifically the AYCE option Sunday-Thursday. We came in around 5:20, it was a ghost town. A row of takeout orders were laid out on the sushi bar, but we sat in a booth. The servers were attentive, obviously with nothing to do, glanced at us from the distance. This worked out very nicely so that we could order everything in a paced manner rather than flagging down a running server. So, we placed our order, and thus began the AYCE feast. It took maybe 20 minutes or so from when we walked in to the time we got our first round, they forgot some things, which turned out to just be on another plate that would come later. They did, however, forget the spicy tuna nigiri I had ordered, but honestly finishing most of everything was difficult for me- the person I was with was not that hungry that day and I refuse to be a victim of leftover fees! We had six rolls and sashimi. For AYCE, this place stands out because they offer sashimi. The downside? Small, thin, sashimi. At the same time, you can order more so it's not a big deal. Just got to be wary for the next time. The salmon and eel were phenomenal. Albacore and white tuns were not noteworthy We had the: Tiger roll-amazing, the mango sauce really complemented the lobster godzilla roll x2- perfect temperature and texture. I was a little Worried that on a Friday night at 7pm there was no one in the restaurant. The girl was very busy on the phone taking to go orders. She was friendly and my food was done in less than 20 minutes. We got two steak hibachi to go and it did not disappoint. The salad dressing was very good, not too chunky and had a great flavor! The clear soup was just like everyone else's, delicious. The fried rice was very good, veggies were cooked in a really delicious sauce. The yum yum and the ginger sauce were very good. The steak in the to go meal didn't taste as fresh as it would if we ate there but we got it to go so I understand. Hope to return again to eat in the restaurant for fresher steak. Katana has added a touch of cyberpunk sleekness to West Liberty Avenue with its bold Asian cuisine, flaming teppanyaki tables, dangerously stylized neon sign, and overall modish atmosphere. Images of a motorcycle rumbling and a blade scraping against a rain-slicked black street were conjured as we drove up to Katana late last week. Fortunately, the food, which includes Japanese, Chinese, and Thai fare, matched up to the visuals, for me at least. We opted for privacy and eschewed the hibachi spectacle for a quiet meal in the cool, calm back dining room. Beginning our meal was an appetizer of steamed dumplings that were soft as butter, meaty as a Porterhouse steak, and as moist as mid-morning summer grass. Unsure as to what I wanted, I went with dual starters for dinner: Godzilla rolls and Tuna Tartare. A quintet of deep-fried medallions enrobed in seaweed and filled with rice, whitefish, crabmeat, roe, and eel were plated before me and drizzled with some sort of orange sauce that recalled mayonnaise. To think that I had gotten bored with sushi. The batter provided for a crisp hide that steamed each roll's innards to delicate, delectable effect. The velvet, fluorescent dressing captured the eye and enhanced their vaguely sugary richness. It was county fair food by way of the Far East, and I could have destroyed another plate or two of it as easily as a giant, irradiated reptile would Tokyo. Kay had a fried banana while I went with a globe of fried ice cream that rivaled the Mexican version with a cakey, floury, nutty crust that enveloped the vanilla ice cream adequately. With foxily displayed A-1 food, solid service, and an atmosphere that flickers with fires of a culinary origin, Katana's prospects in the South Hills look promising. As a new member of the Dormont hood, I was super excited to see this pop up. One because I love sushi and two because... I LOVE SUSHI! You never know, when a new sushi joint pops up, if you'll experience the good or the bad. Sometimes it's really good and sometimes it's really really bad. I came on Wednesday for their all you can eat sushi special for $23.95. You know how some all you can eats are the dinky rolls only? Well, here you can get the whole shebang! Want that specialty tempura roll? You got it! Want a Rainbow roll? You can have it... all you can eat! The Spicy Girl Roll was my fave, which is pretty much tuna on top of crunchy tuna. But a very close second, if not equal, was the Godzilla roll. Gosh darnit, it was amazeballs! It came out warm and freshly fried (totally healthy, right?) with cream cheese, white tuna, eel and crab. YUM! I also had a good old faithful philly roll and Amazing roll, which was basically tuna as well. I obviously like tuna. I can't wait to come back and try the Hibachi. Probably stuff my face again.
