I moved to the area this past June from a coastal state and was dying for a decent sushi place. Everything else had let me down, until I went to Katana. Stella was an incredibly sweet server who I can't wait to see again, the restaurant was clean and bright, and the fish was great both in terms of quality and quantity. The prices are pretty comparable to other sushi restaurants in the area, but notably, they had uni! I was so excited to see I was lucky enough to receive a piece with my omakase. Caveat: we are plant-based. We are new regulars here, but have only done take out. We typical order a variety of veggie sushi, gyoza, veggie tempura, fried tofu, Inari, etc. The food is always delicious, and the service is phenomenal. The tempura is not greasy, but crisp and delicious. Everything tastes fresh, and the sushi rice is amazingly tender. The ladies at the front are very friendly, and make sure you're well informed of wait and are quick to get your order ready. Came here on Valentine's Day for one of our first date nights out since covid. The tables were nicely spaced out and not too busy so no issues with cleanliness or too many people. All the servers and staff wore masks. The sushi and sashimi was fresh but I didn't enjoy the purple rice with all the rolls. Also, not a huge deal but I'm used to getting the big boats and presentation here was just a big plate. Good sushi without the frills, nothing mind blowing. EUREKA! A fantastic spot for Sushi! Hiro Sushi was once our favorite. But with their ownership change came a sharp decline in the quality of their food and service. We've "written them off." We recently stumbled on Katana, hidden away in the small "Village Square Mall" on Midlothian Turnpike (behind Wendy's). What a delightful surprise! Three visits later and we've been consistently pleased with everything we've tried. Their "Spicy Chirashi" bowl offers a different twist - chopped pieces of fresh tuna, yellow tail and salmon over rice with tasty salad components. With two sauces on this side you can make it as hot as you'd like. The "Sashimi Regular' provides a sizable portion of the freshest sushi I have ever had, served at the perfect temperature. The steaming miso soup was perfect as well. On our third visit we sampled several of their special rolls; "Kenny" "Dragon Roll" and the "Butterfly." They were flavorful, beautifully presented and huge! A side of seaweed salad was crispy with a perfect blend of seasoning and sesame oil. The restaurant is spotlessly clean and the service was pleasantly provided by "Stella." We are looking forward to many future visits to sample their wide variety of authentic Japanese cuisine offerings. Note: Closed on Mondays. read more

Katana sushi in midlothian just had one of the best COVID set ups I've seen. Only open for takeout and you call order in. Was ready in about 15 mins. Walk in to pickup. Whole restaurant blocked off except for small table where food was bagged and waiting with 3 different kinds of hand sanitizers. Payment wa through a small hole in a plexiglass partition set up. She sanitized the pen before and after I used it and everyone inside was masked. This was my favorite restaurant pre COVID and it may be even more so now! read more

I was apprehensive of trying Katana at first since they are owned by Koreans but I decided to take the dive (and the 30 minute drive) and give them a try since there really isn't a stand out sushi restaurant in the Richmond proper. I tried Katana's omakase which was pretty good. The pieces of fish were very large and generous and were just propped on a small piece of rice. The fish tasted fresh and I was really satisfied with the platter. I also got two additional rolls which were standard, but those were not as memorable. Service here was really great and their staff were all very nice and welcoming. Our waitress was very sweet and attentive without being too overbearing. Overall, I had an enjoyable experience here will definitely be willing to make the trek out to Midlothian to get some half decent sushi! read more

Even though I have lived in the area for a while, this was my first time trying Katana Sushi and it was overall a good experience! We shared a couple veggie rolls (Shiitake, Super Vege and Crispy Tofu) and asked for a side of spicy mayo for dipping. The sushi was fresh and overall pretty good, but we would have liked more variety in the vegetarian roll options - the Shiitake roll was a little underwhelming as it only had the marinated mushroom. We really enjoyed the Crispy Tofu roll (which we ordered again) - the eel sauce was subtly sweet and the tofu and sesame seeds gave it a nice crunch. I do wish the menu made options for different dietary requirements a little more clear (ex. a symbol for gluten-free options). Overall we enjoyed ourselves and would come here again for a quick, nearby sushi craving! read more

Let me say I'm giving it 3 stars because I liked it but didn't love itand my daughter agreed, so I consider 3 an average score. When you walk in they are COVID conscious and take your temp worth a thermal scanner. I have been to several sushi places that are designed just like this one so the design is fine with me, it is small but serves its purpose. I wanted to try the snow sake which wasn't bad, had a slight mint taste to it, my daughter got one of the Japanese sodas which she loved. For the sushi we just wanted a variety and were OK taking some home for lunch the next day so we ordered the Roll Platter. The variety was OK, I dislike the sushi with cream cheese and feel like there were a lot of cheap fillers on there rather than quality sushi. There was also too much sushi with fried items. Ever since moving over to this side of Midlothian I've been wanting to try Katana. Unfortunately, when we moved over the summer I was already pregnant so no sushi for me until I had the baby. Lucky for me I had our baby boy 2.5 weeks early... so January 29th was a momentous day because it was the day after giving birth and I was able to have a big sushi dinner. Our friends actually brought sushi to us at the hospital. It seriously was amazing!!! We had the Hawaiian Sunset (This had pineapple and salmon), Tuna Love (This had Tuna, Avocado and Eel Sauce) and Butterfly (This had shrimp tempura, salmon, tuna and eel). Seriously all the fish was probably some of the most fresh raw fish I've ever had while eating sushi if not the most. The flavors were also absolutely perfect. Granted, I may be super biased because I have been dying for a piece of raw sushi for the last 9 months! While a drink was also on my list of must haves after giving birth sushi was totally on the top of the list have list! It was so good that we decided to go back and eat in two weeks later with my mom who stayed with us for two weeks after I gave birth and a couple of friends. The restaurant is actually a lot larger than it seems from the outside. We went on a Friday night and while there were tables filled with customers there were still many available seats. It was also easy for us to get a table for 7 which worked out well as it was the first dinner outing with the two kiddos after having my son. My mom doesn't mind sushi, but not her most favorite... but the sushi was so good that even my Mom said that she wanted to come back for more sushi the next time she visits. Didn't care for the pink rice. Takeout was just okay even though reviews were excellent which is why I chose it. My standards are pretty high for sushi or any other restaurant for that matter. We're pretty good cooks ourselves so if we're spending money to eat out , we expect at least as good - hopefully better. read more

You'll be surrounded by awesome drawings and thank you notes that kids have done, and posted on the walls. Our waitress June was super sweet right away! She started us off with a little bowl of edamame and two katana rolls which were super similar to crab rangoon but without the crab. We loved them so much we ordered a full appetizer of it! Its half priced bottles of wine on Wednesday so we tried the Sycamore chardonnay! It was really refreshing and the perfect pairing with fish. We ordered a bunch of different rolls, bayside, bamboo, volcano and rainbow roll! Bamboo was definitely my favorite. I'd love to list the contents but unfortunately I ate them all way too fast to keep track of what was what. The fish was super fresh and I loved the texture. The rice to fish ratio was perfect and the rolls were huge! They use some black rice (which has all these health benefits) so the sushi rice looks purple. It was plated beautifully! June genuinely cared about whether or not we loved everything and was intent on making this a great experience for us. This will be our Wednesday night spot! read more

Visited because of the reviews and let me tell you... it met and exceeded expectations. 100% will be coming back regularly, it's worth the 20min drive. We got the shumai dumplings (fried), gyoza dumplings (pork, fried), Shogun roll, Volcano roll, shiitake roll, salmon sashimi, and mango ice cream for dessert. Everything was delicious. Surprisingly, the shiitake roll blew me away. It wasn't even busy at 8pm which surprised me. We sat right down and there were only two other tables there. Service was excellent and the atmosphere was calm. You get a small dish of edamame and a dumpling for each person as soon as you sit down. I got a chirashi while my wife got the spicy chirashi. The spicy chirashi is a Korean style of sashimi bowl, while the chirashi was the more traditional Japanese sashimi bowl. Both had a great quantity of sashimi, and the quality of the pieces were also great. The chirashi did not have as wide of a variety of sashimi as other restaurants I've visited before, but the quality more than made up for it. read more

We've been here a couple of times! The fish is always fresh and tastes great. They have some nice combos for dinner and lunch specials and bento boxes. The prices are reasonable. The last time we got take out was a few days ago and there was a mix up where someone else snagged our order on accident (Robert picked up ours and it was under my husbands name, Rob). So they told my husband, called the other guy, and said that he was bringing back our food. But... We wouldn't want food that someone else picked up while we're amidst a pandemic. They ended up making us new food, but my entire tuna roll was broken. I'm not sure if the other ride was too hot, or it was just rolled too tight but it was all broken. It was still good though! Sashimi and sushi sizes were so big, making it very much worth the money (and the quality is spot on). Will note that the rice to fish ratio for the salmon sushi lacked a little on the rice side, but hey the fish is what you pay for right? I always enjoy their house rolls, and the Kenny roll is exceptionally good! Tempura was crispy and great as well. Everything here is just SO good.
