Overall, I'd give Roll & Bowl a 3/5. The portions were a decent size, and the food came out hot and fresh. I ordered the steak hibachi, and while it was okay, the steak was a bit more overcooked than I would have preferred. The gyoza was definitely the best thing we had for lunch. The location itself was really cute, and I liked the vibe and ambiance. However, it was suuuper hot inside the building, which made it a little uncomfortable to sit and eat, especially while eating hot hibachi. The service was fine for the most part, but there was one interaction that felt a little awkward. Since we didn't finish all of our food, one of the staff members asked if we liked it. We told her yes, but she made a face, looked down at our plates, said "hmm," and then took them away. It was a small interaction, but it definitely felt a little strange and left us wondering if she didn't believe us lol. Nothing about the experience was necessarily bad, but between the overcooked steak, how hot it was inside, and the slightly awkward interaction, it landed right around a 3/5 for me. Great location, great weather so we had lunch outside on the patio and under a large umbrella. The owner came out to greet us and told us about the lunch specials did a great job. I decided not to get the sushi and got the chicken teriyaki which was cooked to perfection. She also gave me some homemade kimchi that they make inside the restaurant and it was delicious! My teriyaki came with a miso soup and she also added a salad as well since the other in our group all got soup and salads. Then she had left-over steamed pork buns which were excellent as well. And the final piece were these oranges cut into half slices. Roll & Bowl is an excellent establishment and I highly recommend this restaurant!! read more

Absolutely -- here is the corrected version: Roll & Bowl may be tucked into an older strip mall, but don't let the location fool you -- this small Japanese restaurant is a real find, especially under its new management. The food was absolutely excellent, and the new owner could not have been more gracious or customer-focused. You can tell there is a lot of pride being put into both the food and the experience. Although I did not order sushi this time, the fish displayed at the sushi bar looked incredibly fresh, and I will definitely be returning specifically to try it. The menu is also much more extensive than I expected, with plenty of options beyond sushi, including bowls, fried rice, and other Japanese-style dishes. It's wonderful to see a small local restaurant being refreshed with such care. I highly recommend giving Roll & Bowl a try!! read more

I've ordered Uber Eats from this restaurant twice. The first time, I waited over 3 hours (as opposed to the initial 1 hour suggested time). Food was good though, so I was willing to try again. The second time, I placed my order at 5:15PM on a Wednesday. Multiple drivers cancelled after waiting at the restaurant because my order was taking too long. I became extremely ill after eating here. The Chesterfield health department visited not long after I did and they reported a heavy cockroach infestation. They also reported that the kitchen did not have hand soap and that the cook literally did not know how to wash his hands. He was observed handling raw chicken and then other foods without washing his hands with soap. This place is disgusting. This is a message to the owner of Hiro Sushi on Midlothian Turnpike, a restaurant with the prices of a fine Japanese steakhouse and the quality of a gas station. Possibly deserving of a visit from Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares...because I just purchased $90 takeout meal for three that tasted like it came straight from the freezer aisle at Costco. The food: Surf & turf hibachi - the fried rice was decent but the rice was on the dry side and tasted like it may have been cooked many hours before. The steak was unremarkable, and the shrimp were basically those bagged frozen shrimp you can get from the freezer aisle at any supermarket. They were dry, mealy, and bland. You can also tell it's not fresh shrimp because there is no shell around the base of the tail it to remove. The hibachi was provided with a brown sauce which could only be described as incredibly pungent thickened Worcestershire (fish) sauce. I don't know what it was for but I can't think of anything that this concentrated stank could be good for. 8.95 for a handful of Ling Ling potstickers. I know it's them because I immediately recognized the dipping sauce. For this price I could have bought a bag of them myself and cooked them properly. Lazy. 8.95 for fried calamari that was obviously pre-frozen (like Sea-Pak) which was nuked harder than Hiroshima in the microwave. Offensively lazy. Sushi: not much to say here. It was okay. None of this meal was very enjoyable, especially for the price. I am almost certain Hiro is struggling financially. They only had a few customers on a weekend around 7pm. They also seemed overstaffed for how slow the restaurant was. If the owner cut his staff down maybe he could afford to serve good food. The owner is not fooling anyone by using fancy looking takeout containers to hide the fact that he is cutting corners on quality. I want to see Hiro redeemed because this used to be a good restaurant. Before COVID I had eaten there many times without issue. Some transparency in their operations could go a long way to fix the issues with Hiro's food. Hiro Sushi needs to host a re-launch of the restaurant, with the theme of proving to Midlothian that they've changed to FRESH INGREDIENTS. FOR GOOD. Only a complete transition to fresh ingredients can justify their price point and save this restaurant or they're going to die a slow and painful death as they lose more and more customers. read more

I am so in love with this whole I'm the wall place I found! Such good sushi spot! I had the nigiri salmon and yellowtail and it was by far the freshest I've had. Yes, it is a little outdated as far as ambiance goes but the main reason why you come is for the SUSHI. I also had spicy edamame which was AMAZING! The sauce they put on it was home made! This used to be my favorite location to get sushi but now it's hit or miss. I love the convenience of ordering online for pickup but be sure to be specific in what you want. One order, all my rolls were wrapped up like a sushi burrito and the next order a hot roll was placed in the same container as a cold roll resulting in slimy rice. The fish always seems fresh though and they have a large selection of specialty rolls. Despite these errors, I still enjoy an occasional lunch here (they have a great lunch bento special). I think it would be better for dine in than take out. Prices are reasonable and it's the only sushi in the immediate area. read more

Pretty good. First time here. We ordered Japanese Sodas (fun to open and drink- tasty too), hot sake (small size is more than enough for one person and could actually be saved) and sodas. Appetizers included edamame (delicious), miso soup (it was ok- kinda weak and lacking flavor), and Bang Bang Shrimp (super good). Entrees Fantastic roll (really good but too much avocado), Hot Hot roll (tasty but wasn't hot like we expected), combination fried rice (yummy), spicy tuna (it was ok but not as spicy like we prefer) and California rolls (pretty good). The staff was very nice and the restaurant was clean and quite busy. Not sure if I'll go back because we just stopped by while in town, but worth a visit if you like sushi. Came on a Sunday and this place looks sketchy because the surrounding area of stores was closed except for the restaurant. Upon entering it's dark and so is the restaurant. The waitress was very friendly and greeted us right away. I like the lit up candle on each table. I started with the appetizer with the shumai and tempura vegetables. It came out quickly and the shumai was good and I liked how hot and crunchy the tempura was. I wasn't craving any sushi and wanted to try the Soba Beef Noodles. I got to choose between a salad or miso soup with my meal. I went with a salad and it came out first before my appetizer because I'm sure it doesn't take long to make. The salad was average. I like how the waitress was quick to pick up any dishes we were done with. Finally, the Soba Noodles came in. I had to add some soy sauce. They did give us some spice and it wasn't bad at all. It helped with the flavors and I used a lot of it. Inside, it had noodles, beef, veggies, and mushrooms. They gave the right portions and I finished it all. This is definitely a hidden gem and I enjoyed everything, the noodle was okay for me and I like how at the end they gave me an orange and candy - which was a nice touch for the finishing meal. I definitely will be back to try out other meals and especially sushi, which I heard is the star of the restaurant. read more

This Chinese owned place has a very large selection of Japanese food. They make pretty good rolls. With some specials daily. The sushi on the other hand is a bit blend, the fish does not taste like sushi grade that you can't taste the sweetness. Each piece of sushi basically just a piece of fish sitting on top of rice, there's no wasabi under each fish and no soy sauce brush on top of the fish either like the real sushi suppose to, not to mention there's no toppings to accommodate to each piece to enhance the flavor. Okay usually I try to reach out to the business owner in a situation like mine but let me just say I feel it's important for others to be aware because anytime it's health & safety, I share info. I ordered a poke bowl mixed with salmon, spicy tuna, and white fish. Now I will tell you that it tasted fine and I liked the flavor, I thought that the seasoning used was good and everything. About 2 hours later I felt really sick. To the bathroom vomiting among other things.. I'm thinking it will be fine. Wrong. I was a lot sicker than I thought. I suffered chills, more vomiting, nausea, belly pain, body aches, the runs, then hot flashes where I broke out in sweat. I didn't eat anything else except this poke sushi bowl. It was the first and last thing I ate that day other than water and orange juice. Again, it was good except everything else that followed. Be careful ordering from here. Since I am new to the Richmond area, I decided to search for a viable sushi restaurant with a lunch special. So, I tried it out, and found the sushi and experience to be mediocre. I ordered the Alaska Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll, and Yellowtail Roll, as a part of the 3 roll lunch special, and I ordered online. I gave it about 20-25 minutes before I reached the restaurant, and I had to wait a little longer for the sushi, so not the shortest wait. The interior had nothing special to it, and it had a calming and dark ambiance. When I picked up my food and finally started eating, there were a couple things I noticed. First, I asked for no cucumber for any of my sushi, and I sadly found cucumber in my Shrimp Tempura Roll. Also, the Miso Soup was not as flavorful as it normally is. Aside from that, the sushi was not as fresh as I thought it would be, but considering it was a lunch special and the taste was decent, it was not the worst experience, but not the best. For a cheaper sushi option for lunch, why not and go for it, but if you want a higher quality experience, I would look elsewhere. read more

Hiro is located in an older shopping center; not too much action happening in the area and I admit, I have driven by this place numerous times without noticing Hiro. We walked in on a Saturday afternoon and were seated right away. The restaurant is small but ample seating for a cozy meal with a date or a few friends. Staff is friendly and checked in just enough. The ginger salad did not leave a good impression: a few pieces of iceberg and thick ginger dressing with no flavor. We ordered a few rolls (four to be exact) and were pleasantly surprised when they were delivered to us on the sushi boat! The rolls were tasty and did not disappoint. read more
