This is a good place for breakfast. The seating area is really small and sometimes the wait can be lengthy. Their bakery selection is second to none. Every kind of pie can be found here. Their staff is very busy and tends to be abrupt sometimes. But overall a swell place to eat. The one draw back that I can see is the pricing structure. A wonderful gem for breakfast in Flat Rock. I am from West Virginia originally and I really appreciate authentic buttermilk biscuits. The Biscuits here are SO GOOD! If you're a Southerner downriver, you need to come here ASAP. I typically get the two biscuits, egg , and bacon meal (About $6) here and always leave happy. Their sausage gravy is also excellent. Their pancakes are a good choice, but for me the only choice is biscuits :-). Of course, you also must try KK's famous pies. Always fresh and always on point. Best pies I have tried: Strawberry Rhubarb, Cherry, and coconut cream. You can call ahead and make sure your favorite pie is stowed away for you, if you are picking up later. The interior probably needs a refresh and is a bit dated, but the food makes you ignore all of that. I went to Kates for breakfast for the first time on a Sunday morning. Yes, the church crowd was in full force.... it was PACKED with a line out the door at about 10:30am. Anyway, we were seated fairly quickly and our server was johnny-on-the-spot and attentive. The restaurant is small but clean and attractively decorated. I ordered a ham and cheese omelet. I swear to you, there was so much ham in that omelet I could have made a fat sandwich of it, I had to look for the cheese! I would have liked a bit less, but no big deal, next time I will say so. But try this dish if you like ham. It came with homemade wheat toast, very light and airy, and home fries. My husb had eggs over easy, biscuits & gravy and a slice of sugar ham. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the biscuits were to DIE FOR DO YOU HEAR ME. Light and tasty, not heavy. The gravy was good, and the ham slice was dee-lish. In the end, we couldnt finish our meals because there was so much food. The portions are very generous. The biscuits and gravy are delicious, the country ham salty enough to dehydrate you for the rest of the day, the eggs fresh and cooked to perfection, but who are we kidding? Excellent fruit pies, nice flaky crust & a delicious fruit packed mouthful .... This place is very dangerous for me to stop at, drive near or dine at! I have not been able to stay away from the sugar cookies! This sugar cookie is a crunchy cookie w/ tons of icing... Try as I have, I always end up w/ one in my mouth..... So that been said, I can only stop here once a month... When I do, I must order that super cheesy, melty Cuban sandwich.. It's melty cheese's, ham. The definition of home cooking. I have never had anything that I did not like here! From the French toast to the various pancakes they offer; the seasonal strawberries and biscuits (spring/summer) it's all great! The actual location is very small and you could have a wait depending on when you go. They home bake all of their pies (apple is a personal favorite) but you can't go wrong with any of their goodies. Don't get scared off by the "rustic" decor- they haven't updated the inside since I've been born! Staff is always so kind as well! read more

Good service, great food. Restaurant was busy when we got there (9AM on a Tuesday). Friend and I ordered coffees and two orders of biscuits and gravy. Coffee was good (nothing special), and refilled promptly. Our food order took 45 minutes, but was well worth the wait. If chef Gordon Ramsey were to eat biscuits and gravy, he would eat here. If musician David Grohl was in town, I would take him here. If Jesus had a breakfast hankering, he would try the biscuits and gravy. If...well, you get the point. Delicious homemade foods! This small, of the beaten path, breakfast/ lunch spot is a step back in time to the small town diner of a bygone era. If you long for the tasty of great grandmas style of cooking this is the place for you. Be prepared to wait as they have only 7 booths and 7 tables (2 of which are reserved for parties of 5 or 6 only). The average wait time is 15-20 mins and plan on that wait being outside as there is little wait room inside. Moreover, bring cash because they do not accept credit nor atm/debit. Again, completely old skool here. The breakfast is delicious. Standard fair, but with down hone twists like homemade biscuits and gravy, country (salt cured) ham, skin on home fries only (no hashbrowns), homemade breads for the toasts (french included), and the seasonal, mouthwatering, fresh strawberries and biscuits (almost like a strawberry cold soup). Don't forget to grab a homemade pie, cookie, brownie, or pecan roll before you leave (pies in the $15 range). We live just around the corner from Kate's and its simply one of the best dives we have every visited. Now, you need to know a few important things about this place. They only accept cash. The parking lot is small and you should only pull in one way. The restaurant is even smaller and not fancy. There is often a long line to get a seat. So, take cash, go early, and get ready to enjoy some of the best food thats every crossed your palate! The breakfast is our favorite. Its like my grandmother is in the back making cinnamon rolls, bread, and pies! Try the cinnamon toast with icing - its incredible. Their pancakes are also some of my favorites. Hidden Gem or off the beaten path? This restaurant is sometimes listed as a hidden gem or off the beaten path. It is actually both. I visited on a Friday Morning about 8:30. There were only a few other people eating breakfast when I arrived. They have a sign asking you to wait to be seated. There was no wait as the waitress was ready to accommodate any arriving guests. I was told to sit wherever I chose. The only exception was 1 round table which had a sign on it stating for 5 or more. I did not choose that table :^). I sat at table off to the side. I was asked what I would like to drink, I said coffee. I looked over the menu but was happily distracted by a table topper which offered Weekend Specials. I chose Raspberry Pancakes and added sausage links. My waitress ,a longtime employee, was friendly and has an inviting & warm personality. The Three pancakes were filled with raspberries. Think blueberry pancakes but raspberries instead. Raspberries inside not just on top like some other places. They were fluffy and flavorful. This was a great choice. They also offered Banana Bread French Toast. I am sure it is divine. I have had their Homemade ( recipe from the 60s ) Banana Bread and I'm a fan. I have also had the Raisin French toast which I loved. So the combination of banana bread & French toast, All I can say is Well done Kate's Kitchen. This is why a small place in an awkward location has lasted an become a local favorite. *I was surprised when my bill was retrieved from my table ( I thought to make some correction) but not returned. Atmosphere Kate's Kitchen is located on West Huron River Drive (next to the train tracks) in Flat Rock Mi. There is limited seating due to the size of the building and it was clean. There was never a train while I visited but I am sure you can hear it when it passes since it is about 30 feet from a crossing Meal Breakfast special Raspberry Pancakes $5.75 Sausage $3.25 and Coffee $1.99. Total $10.99* Competitive prices. Wheelchair Access The restaurant is at street level, seating is at normal levels. No Designated Handicap Parking, but there are a few spaces near the front door. Kate's is definitely one of the smallest restaurants and sometimes you might even have to wait outside in the cold in line. But once you get inside, the wait is worth it. Their breakfast is wonderful! Especially their cinnamon bread with all the icing. The desserts are the best. A couple times a year I drive over an hour to purchase their cream puffs. The worst food ever. Owner was nasty and yelling in front of other customers. Had to return all 4 orders, they were cold and never received the toast and bacon. They forgot one of our orders. Owner said she was going to call the police if we didn't pay for the cold horrible food. Had been going there for years but after that nasty horrible lady who said she was the owner opened her foul mouth, I WILL NEVER GO BACK! The waitress was nice, I feel sorry for her having to work for such a nasty person.
