I'd give this place 4 stars as I eat there quite often. The food is consistant and freshly made. Some things are much better than others. I'll attempt to steer you away from the bad and towards the good. Soup: The chicken and dumpling and beer cheese soups are amazing. They are both incredibly flavorful. The chili is also very good, if they have it, and its also a bit spicy. Stay away from the clam chowder though. I don't know why, but it's far below the quality of their other soups. It's extremely salty and I expect the clams are canned. In short stay away. Sandwiches: The Zesto pesto and The Depot are both amazing. The french dip is hit or miss. Sometimes the meat can be a bit overcooked and or bland. The one flatbread (nan) sandwich I had was delicious. I've been told the June bug is good, but I've personally never had.it. Sides: mashed potatoes need.to be seasoned they're made fresh in house, but are sadly.very.bland. However, the French fries are amazing. Dinner: The queen cut prime rib is one of the best deals ive ever had on a steak. Great quality, taste and the price is unbeatable. The service is usually very good. read more

Came here for Sunday Brunch with my wife after church. We loved the breakfast food. My omelette was made just right and tasted fresh and homemade. However it did take quite sometime to get service after we sat down. Not sure if the server was on break or busy with another table but many other servers walked by us for about 5 minutes after sitting down until finally our server arrived to take our drink order. Once our server finally got to us after the long wait she was very nice and friendly. Overall food good, friendly people but waiting five minutes to order something to drink is the reason 4 star review. seems like another server could've stepped up to get us drinks if ours was busy or on break. read more

I've been here a few times and the food has never disappointed me. I believe this is a local favorite for many, but I can't discover anything special about the place. I wouldn't mind coming back here though. There's a "front" and a "back" and the front has more ambiance. The last time I was there it was stuffy and smelled awful in there...almost like a steamy kitchen with several sweaty cooks. Maybe it was because it was ll you can eat crab legs that night...not sure. If I would've been alone I would've turned around and gone to a different restaurant, that didn't smell like armpit. I was in town from Cincinnati with my brother, who lives in Ft. Wayne, IN, to celebrate our mother's birthday. I was extremely disappointed! First, we were seated at a table that was so close to the entrance I could touch the door! Whenever it was opened, there was a strong blast of cold air. Even though the clearance was under 3 ft. The personnel and customers passed through, brushing against me every single time! There were PLENTY of other empty tables too. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING, SETTING UP YOUR TABLES LIKE THAT?! REALLY!!! Service was extremely awkward and lacking in confidence and poise. Food was wrong, service slow, plates not brought out together. Waitress was sloshing the soup all over the sides of the bowls and making a mess. When I pointed it out, she went back into the kitchen and came back out with them very hastily wiped off, but still sloppy. The soup was so salty I couldn't eat it anyway! And I'm not picky. My aunt is on a diet and ordered a Hawaii chicken on flat bread. What she got was something wrapped in a pita - with mashed potatoes. Wanting to preserve the good mood, I told her I would "help" with the mashed potatoes. The waitress, apologizing for the soup being so salty (seriously, TASTE the food you're preparing before you serve it, huh?) she offered to bring me more mashed potatoes. I told her I didn't want them. She brought them anyway. What I did want was fries, but they never came - a different story. I felt she DID NOT LISTEN well at all! Or there was just a lack of connection. Which is the major reason I entrust a restaurant to stage an evening for dinner above all else. She was nice enough, but very unpolished, and clumsy. A very low aptitude for this line of work. I got so upset, I had to step outside for a moment. On the way out, I asked for the owner - she was not in. I spoke to an older woman working downstairs and she could see I was upset. Resigned to "get through it" I went back and rejoined my family. The meals were fairly delicious. I just did not need to hear from the waitress that she was sorry because "her girls were having an emergency". I absolutely DO NOT effin' CARE! We are not friends! I am not coming to visit you and get involved in your life!! Keep that schtuff out of my evening!!! You are HOSTS!!! For my mother's birthday party. Your job is to provide an enjoyable dining experience, and that's IT! Absolutely NO real effort made at addressing or rectifying the situation. In times like this, I think it's really important to support your local small business and lift them up when they are doing well. When we decided to go out to eat and find somewhere outdoors for safety, this was the only place within an hour of our home that seemed interesting and appeared to have a shady outdoor eating space because it was about 90 degrees and sunny. The whole experience was such a nice one - the waitress Payton was very nice and patient with our son, very prompt, attentive and our order was exactly what we asked for. The food AND non alcoholic drinks were great and unique. One of us had a desert pear drink and that was awesome! My iced vanilla latte was impressive too. Then the food... been a while since I've had food I didn't make that was home made instead of reheated frozen. I'm guessing this food was all home made. The French fries were so crispy and good, Perch was real perch - light and airy and perfectly seasoned and cooked. My butternut squash dish was epic, I enjoyed every last bite because no one in my house likes squash but me ha ha. I couldn't believe how cool the presentation of our food was too. I guess this place just really caught me by surprise. I couldn't say one bad thing about this place and I know I'm willing to drive an hour to come here again. Food is good, however, they could not care less about social distancing guidelines. The wait staff takes their masks on and off, usually off. Our waitress would walk up to the table, slide her mask down, then be breathing right over us talking to us like everything is fine and dandy. The staff is also having little pow wows in the hallways blocking the way for customers to get by, of course without masks. Their attempt at social distancing by having sanitizer/masks/distances tables is a complete facade--they simple do not care. If you're even slightly concerned about social distancing, I wouldn't go here for a while. read more

Been here a few times, today we ordered in from work. I had the Club Sandwich and a cup of the Chicken & Dumpling Soup. The sandwich was OK, I've had better. The bread looked toasted but wasn't really and it was kind of soggy. First time I've ever had a 'Club Sandwich' warm, usually they are cold sandwiches. At first I was put off by the soup and kind of disappointed as they put it in a beverage cup with a plastic lid, yes with a straw hole! It was leaking all over. this being said.. it was the BEST Chicken & Dumpling soup I've ever had. It was so flavorful and delicious. If you stop into Kathy's try this soup! We also tried the fried pickles. Not anything I would have again. They were small, the breading soggy and real salty. read more

Entrees and Sandwiches are really good. Fried Cod is always delicious. They might have the best french fries in town. Serendipity Sandwich is always a winner. My only complaint are the side salads. Last month when I was there, on a Monday night, it was SO... PHENOMENAL. I think that the squash ravioli was the best ravioli I've ever had! Literally. My waitress was vegan too & really understood me. Later on I sat at the bar & the girl who made my drink with the black hair & freckles was so cute and complimented my necklace! My soup was cold so I sent it back to be warmed. The meatloaf and mashed potatos came out cold next. The service has gradually declined to a point it's unbearable. The servers are young and under experienced and several of them are rude. They congregate in the kitchen and hide from the dining room. The bar in the back is an afterthought. If you like decorations, then go in. If you want good food and good service look elsewhere. read more

Went on Thursday to Kathy's for the all you can eat crab legs! What a treat. These were some of the best crab legs that I have experienced in the mid-west. But that's just the crab. It also comes with soup or salad and potatoes. I got the chicken and dumpling soup. Which was to say the least, very disappointing. It was luke warm and very small portioning, barely a cup. I ordered the baked potato also, however the waitress came back to our table to ask if 2 people minded giving up theirs, 2 of us did and got mashed potatoes instead...should of got the home fries. The gravy for the mashed potatoes was over salted, especially for someone on a low salt diet. The rest of the experience was great though and split a peanut butter mousse dessert which was fabulous. Over all I would go back, but skip the 2 portions of the meal I stated. read more

Was there a few days ago. Love the quaintness & decor of the place. Feels homey & relaxed. I ordered the spinach frittata & for 12 $ expected a nice fluffy hearty egg bake but it was quite flat & whimpy & with few ingredients. The side muffin was too spicy, clovey & the fruit cup bland. The cantaloupe was hard, not sweet & the pineapple- canned. My guest ordered the Monte Cristo breakfast sandwich which came with a raspberry sauce & was quite wonderful! We took home a meatloaf dinner which was just good not great, & 2 chicken dumpling soups which were fantastic but leaked all over the bag ! Need better "to go " bowls!! Because the soup is not cheap & lost a lot of broth. Coffee & service were very good! Restrooms up long narrow stairs which were difficult with a recent knee replacement. We're out of towners & Cathy's came highly recommended so we'll give her another try! read more

We were in Flushing the other morning and wanted to have breakfast in a 'real' restaurant. We discovered Kathy's and it was wonderful! I ordered the Cinnamon Breakfast (can't remember the entire name) but it was scrambled eggs with Ham and cheese mixed in, a HUGE fresh fruit cup (strawberries, watermelon, grapes, blueberries . .) and a delicious Cinnamon Bun . . . what a yummy combo. My husband had a breakfast sandwich and said it was yummy. The coffee is excellent as well. I love that they use cloth napkins! We will definitely be back. They open at 9 or 9:30 AM. read more

Quality of service is awful here, I have given Kathy's a pass too many times because I liked the food but the last few times I have went there the quality of food has declined and the quality of service is consistently poor. It is a shame to see a once nice establishment decline as Kathy's has. As more dining options continue to grow in Flushing Kathy's will be forced to improve or suffer. I simply cannot pay their price for sub-par service and mediocre food. read more

This is a consistently tasty place to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner. The service is usually quite fast and they have a wide selection of food but not so much that dishes are generic or "canned." The fare is Midwestern American and they have a variety of "specials" each day. Most recently, I had charbroiled chicken with BBQ sauce and mashed potatoes with Asian Slaw. The Slaw was the only portion of the meal I found disappointing. It had a bit too much going on between the strong teriyaki dressing which overpowered the dried cranberries and cabbage, chopped tomatoes & zucchini. The chicken itself was flavorful and falling-off-the-bone-tender. Kathy's also has a basic beer/wine list and a handful of excellent desserts. read more

Food in general is good. I don't go there for the steak or prime rib because you cant get it rare which is IMO the only way beef should be consumed. But at this time they have all you can eat crab legs on Thursday and that is great. On other days they have several chicken or salmon dishes that are all very good. Flushing is a cool little town with a lot of things going on through out the year and Kathy's fits right in, they are a little bit old school in there menu which is great I just wish i could get a rare steak. read more

This was a nice surprise, when we entered I wasn't sure what to expect. There was a decent crowd for a Thursday evening. Outdoor dining looked nice but we chose to sit inside. Menu was full of some very interesting choices (no sarcasm) and it was difficult to choose which to try. I chose the Smothered Meatloaf. WOW what a great dish. Have visited Kathys multiple times over the past 16 years of living in my beloved Flushing! Food, serve and ease of finding seating have always been spot on! No complaints. I just can't get over the drab, old, dark interior of the place! Not sure if that's what they are going for or not but it definitely could use a breathe of fresh air in the interior design department! First time dining at kathy's. Very satisfied! Server suggested 2 dishes which were a house specialty (blackened chicken over butternut squash ravioli) and a 'most popular' entrée (fish and chips). We have eaten here three times in the past 2 years. First time was ok. Nothing wrong with the food, but not exactly wonderful. It was a very busy Friday evening. Service was slow. The second time, I ordered the special. It was a steak with a spicy kind of sauce smothered on top. It looked good, but the steak was full of gristle. Again, service was slow. By the time everyone was done eating, the waitress asked how dinner was. I told her I couldn't eat My steak because it was all gristle. So, after another 20 minutes, we got the bill. She took my meal off the bill. We decided to give it another try for breakfast. After asking for cream for the coffee 2 times and not getting it, I finally asked the owner to bring us cream. Then, the price of the kids meal on the bill was different than the menu price. I was told something about a new menu or whatever. I told her to adjust my bill to the price on the menu that I was given. Service is slow, whether they are busy or not. Prices are high for the quality of food that you receive.
