I had no idea there was a coffee house at The Old Brogue - intrigued as I was - I made the rather long-ish drive from Haymarket to Great Falls on a Monday morning for breakfast and coffee. I did not see it on the menu - so I asked if they had cold brew. They don't make a cold brew - but it was pointed out to me they had cans of cold brew in the refrigerated beverage cooler. Not what I wanted. I was offered iced coffee - which those of you that know - understand there is a vast gulf between iced coffee and cold brew. I ordered a large dark roast coffee - and a breakfast burrito. The menu listed that among the burritos ingredients is cheese - I requested extra cheese in my burrito - as it seems that often I cannot tell there is any cheese in a given burrito. The coffee was somewhat disappointing - rather average - but I guess I should not be surprised by that. The burrito was delivered to my table - wrapped in foil. I asked about hot sauce and the server person brought me 3 bottles to choose from - I selected the Habanero hot sauce. I cut the burrito in half - it looked like it had zero cheese in it - and I certainly could not taste any cheese. The whole thing was rather bland. It needed seasoning. So I added hot sauce and black pepper in an attempt to make it more interesting. I would come back and try some of the other breakfast items in hope of finding something more flavorful. My friend and I went for afternoon tea and it was fabulous!! I have been to several places for tea including the Ritz and this place was great for half the cost! I used to come here frequently in the mornings many years ago to pick up an iced latte before work. This was my first time back and they did not disappoint! The latte here is consistently good - it has a bold flavor and is not too milky. The price is quite reasonable as well - my vanilla iced latte tan about $4.75. The outdoor seating looks great/inviting but it was full with people dining in and ordering meals. Inside was dark and felt crowded with so much furniture around + low popcorn, paneled ceilings. Counter service staff was nice. Food running staff were rushed. Oof. I ordinarily come to Katie's for their early morning Cars n Coffee on Saturdays and limit my food intake to the odd pastry or two. I've generally never had a problem with this, especially with their sublime (if occasionally a little less-than-fresh) chocolate croissants. So I made what I thought was an informed decision by sitting down with my sister for a three-egg cheese omelette and a "commuter croissant sandwich." The croissant sandwich was good according to my sister, though that isn't the subject of my complaints here. In this case, when we ordered at 9:14 AM, we couldn't have foreseen the saga ahead of us. We were notified around 9:30 that the croissanwich had to be remade because the first one didn't turn out as expected, which is genuinely a great start from a service perspective--most smaller shops just kinda leave you waiting. But they didn't bring anything as consolation to hold us over, so I went up at 9:37 to order a chocolate croissant and a cheese danish, both pretty good, to hold us over. At around 9:45 (incidentally within seconds of me having resolved with myself to leave at 10am if the food had yet to be delivered) the omelette and croissanwich finally made it out to the table, but it felt to me based on the texture and impermeability of the outside of the omelette that the omelette itself was likely reheated after the remade croissanwich was finished, possibly even microwaved judging from the piping hot plate, which detracted substantially from the quality of the omelette itself. I'm hoping it _was_ reheated; if the omelette was cooked to this state, I'd have to dock another star. More annoyingly, although the wonderful person taking the order confirmed it was a three-egg omelette, the omelette was in fact a two-egg serving--a solid 33% smaller than what a typical three-egg omelette would be. Despite all of this, all I got was a meek "sorry about that." No consolation, no apology, no partial refund for delivering potentially reheated food twenty minutes late, no "hey have an extra two small bottles of diet coke for the two of you on us," nothing. And of course, despite being a bit more sit-downy than your typical coffee place, it's got only bottled soft drinks. --- Look, I love visiting Katie's. Especially for the car show. I'm sure this was probably an anomalous occurrence, but it's with the off-kilter experiences that a restaurant has an opportunity to make--or break--its perception. Katie's revealed that they had no real policy or training around exceptional circumstances, and the outcome was a disappointing omelette twenty minutes late and a hesitation for me to ever sit down for anything more than a chocolate croissant. 4 stars for food (good pastries/croissanwich, omelette could've been good if it didn't seem to have been reheated and came at the right portion), Minus 3 for service (-1 for late food, -1 for reheated?/mis-portioned food, -1 for not even trying to make it right. Decided not to dock a star for bottled drinks since at its core, Katie's is still a coffee house), Plus 1 for hosting my favorite cars and coffee event anywhere around the DM(V). This is so totally not Austin or Starbucks but so different and so fantastic. A room of the pub serves as a coffee house during the morning. A wood-burning fireplace, a nice menu, great seating, and Illy coffee make it a draw. Peggy and me had an Americano, a latte, the omelet of the day, and a bagel with smoked salmon; $22.63 before tip. All the food was 4-star. The breakfast potatoes were especially well-done, the smoked salmon was top-notch, and the sesame bagel was good by NYC or Montreal standards. TIP - if you go here, you must know exactly where you are going. You won't just stumble on to it. Seating can be at a premium at peak times. BONUS - Pablo and the team are coffee fanatics. I only wish that this was closer to my home! A friend and I visited here after walking around Great Falls Park. I had a latte and it was delicious, and I'd argue of the quality you'd find in Europe. The espresso was top quality (Illy coffee beans) and they use whole milk by default. The staff were attentive. The inside decorum felt like a French cafe, with hardwood floors and wood chairs. The only downside is that the outdoor seating is limited, as technically the seating is for the restaurant next door. There are a few benches where you can sit. read more

Really quaint spot near the park, tucked in just off the village. They are an Illy Cafe, so they serve their brand of coffee and espresso drinks. The outside patio is nice and there are plenty of seats indoors. Service is quick and friendly. They serve a small variety of pastries and warm sandwiches starting a 7am. Coolest thing is every Saturday morning, there is a Coffee and Cars meet. Everything shows up from 5-ton motor transport rigs to Ferrari's. You can also hit up the farmers market on your way out in the same parking lot. read more

This cozy hometown coffee shops is one of my favorites. If you are lucky enough to visit it in the winter/fall time, sit near the fire. If not, that's okay too - your experience will still be lovely! I always like to try out independent coffee shops when possible, and Katie's did not disappoint! They serve Illy coffee - which is always a solid choice - and they offered an abundance of lovely looking pastries and snacks. I ordered a cup of coffee and a Lemon Ricotta muffin, and found myself a cozy spot near the fireplace (thankfully not in use, as it is definitively tropical outside this week). The muffin was excellent, and the coffee was also good. They seemed to have a group of regulars, many of whom the servers greeted by name, and it was nice to see the place comfortably busy. There were plenty of people chatting, working, etc. Everything was clean and tidy, and the staff seems to keep on top of the service area and tables. This is definitely a place I would frequent if I lived in Great Falls! read more

Huge shout out to Katie's this past week for indulging me in conjuring up the "ghost of coffees past" when I tried to order a Viennese coffee here, something I've been rather obsessed with since my last review in 2015! All the baristas looked completely puzzled with my request. Turns out they thought I was asking for a "Vietnamese" coffee! (not the same) After several attempts, at their own insistence, and much embarrassed explaining I did with the owner, they were very determined to please me and get it right for me. By the third try, they nearly had it down. It had apparently been a special espresso offered up by their Vendor Illy in the past- mystery solved! I was fortunate enough to get all three of their test coffee attempts of recreating the Viennese and was more than wired (and happy) for the rest of the day! How kind of them to do this for me, I truly appreciated it. Its not often that restaurants care enough to go the extra mile like this and the pride of ownership here shines through and through. I always found it to be a great place to get a hot or cold drink and something tasty for breakfast - and all the amazing cars was always a bonus. I'm not sure if people are showing up there again with their great selection of cars due to COVID-19 or not since the last time I was there was in February 2020. The staff was always attentive, food always great and it was always a wonderful place to see a grand selection of incredible cars from vintage to brand new supercars or hypercars. I like the atmosphere, it's cozy and we've been coming here quite often... I give it a four star, because once they forgot my sandwich and the lady who made it just slapped it together. I waited thirty's minutes for it and my coffee was already down to a quarter and cold by then.... Otherwise as we visited today, whoever's made my sandwich, I was so happy, you could taste the care that was put in. When you cook or make something to eat, make sure, you make it with rlc, otherwise it will show, when the sandwich is so disorganized, it falls apart. Your feelings season the food. Alas, since Gillette's Coffee House closed down in 2000, Great Falls has been craving some caffeine with a small town feel. Katie's Coffee House is in the Snuggery of the Old Brogue - Coffee house by morning/afternoon, Old Brogue Snuggery dining area by night. Katie's serves "Illy" brand Italian Coffee along with some breakfast items, pastries and prepackaged salads, sandwiches, etc. I am dying to go back for their smoked salmon, onion and cream cheese on a bagel, after having a bit of my brother's last weekend. I've had their egg and cheese on croissant which it also delightful. Set in the Snuggery, Katie's also feels, well, snuggery-like with the wooden bench seats, stone fireplace and friendly staff. They have since worked out some kinks having to do with where to place your order, where to pick it up, etc. Also, Katie's has a rotating display of local artwork (photography, paintings, sculpture to name a few), so there is always something new to look at each weekend. A local flower shop provides artfully arranged bud vases on the tables as well. I've only been on the weekends, which if you time it right, you won't have to wait and you can get a table. This is also a great place for people watching! Ahhhh, Great Falls. This is definitely a staple place that I'll be returning to again and again. read more

Katie's is a great local alternative to all the corporate franchise coffeeshops that are overrunning the area. The coffee is good, tasty, well-priced, and they have a nice selection of non-coffee alternatives. The service is always friendly and prompt. They have a fine spread of ready to eat breakfast items like yogurt, muffins, croissants, etc, but the hot breakfasts are the way to go. The eggs and omelets are great, as are the breakfast sandwiches. My favorite is the bacon egg and cheese on a nice ciabatta-type roll. I'm a fan of Car's and Coffee on Saturday morning from 7-9. If you want to park your sportscar where it will be seen, get there before 7:00 to get a good location - or get there late (8:30 or 9:00) to grab one of the places that has been vacated by one of the early-arriving cars. If you don't have a sportscar, you might want to park on the edges or encounter the looks from car lovers. Given the crowds, Katie's offers muffins and coffee in buik outside of the shop during this well-attended event. If you want something more complex (hot meal or specialty drink), you must go inside and wait. Service is usually efficient but the line can be long. It's a fun place for fellow car enthusiasts to catch up with each other. ...and stay until 9 and you can visit the Great Falls Farmers Market across the parking lot.
