I think I tried this place once before and didn't think too much of it, but decided to give it another shot recently and I'm glad I did. I called in an order for the Pork Katsu Sando and the 2 Chicken Tenders with Fries box. Picked it up about 15 minutes later, all ready to go. The pork katsu sandwich really hit the spot crispy, juicy, and just the right amount of fat to keep it moist and flavorful. Definitely the star of the meal. The chicken tenders were alright, nothing super memorable. I'd definitely come back just for the sando. But might explore the rest of the menu next time as they've recently added some new items.
tl;dr if you're a fan of katsu, then this SGV fast-casual joint will be right up your alley -- opt for the combo plates, and be sure to try the ambitious shrimp and menchi patties After my recent trip to Japan, it has been challenging to palate Los Angeles' mostly overpriced and watered-down Japanese cuisine. Further, few Japanese restaurants in SoCal go beyond the basics of sushi, hibachi, and gyu-don. That being said, the folks at Katsu Sando do an admirable job at adapting Japanese konbini fare into a fast-casual business model. The San Gabriel outpost is efficiently minimalistic. The whitewashed walls are decorated with just a few framed pictures. Three photo-less, blue-font menu panels hang above the checkout counter to the left. Yellow wooden chairs and barstools are pressed to the wall on the right. A refrigerated display up front is stocked with Japanese konbini goods, while a shelf in the far back holds a slim selection of pantry-stable snacks. A mix of contemporary pop and R&B echoes softly around the room. I've visited Katsu Sando a few times, and my go-to's are the Rice Plate and Curry Plate. The sandwiches are surprisingly hefty (expect the thick katsu patty to be slathered with sauce and to extend beyond the borders of the grilled white bread), but they don't hold up as well as the bento boxes. The combo plates are served with a large helping of rice, seasonal pickles, mostly forgettable potato salad (on the Curry Plate) or slaw (on the Rice Plate), and Worcestershire-esque katsu sauce. Further, the large cup of gravy-like, umami-packed curry sauce has never gone to waste. Of the proteins, I have most enjoyed the extra-crispy, dynamic Honey Walnut and the rich-and-juicy Menchi (an Australian Wagyu beef burger) over the mostly standard Pork. When you dine in, the food is served on vibrant cafeteria trays with custom checkerboard paper liners, and the staff is genuinely invested in the food. The plates run for less than $20 each, and they can curb a reasonable appetite. While Katsu Sando is too expensive for an everyday meal, their combo platters effectively satisfy my occasional, strong konbini cravings.
Located in SG, came across this spot that was located next to Bonchon. Saw they have a diverse menu with lots of various Sandos and Katsu choices. Opted for a plate of shrimp katsu with spicy curry. Came with Miso, rice, macaroni and potato salad. Lots of food but even bettwr was the quality. Crispy shrimp that was perfectly cooked. Highly recommend if you are in the area. I want to go back to try an egg sando..hoping it gives me Tokyo 7-11 / Lawson vibes....give it a go!!
In a small shopping center is a Mini Mart with convenient sandwiches, snacks and soft drinks. They are pre-packaged and ready to grab-and-go. The vegetarian option is Portobello Katsu on a toasted honey milk bread for $12.99. They do offer made to order hot meals at a reasonable prices. I got the 2 piece Boneless Chicken Tenders with Waffle Fries for $10. The chicken was fried perfectly with a little crunchy breading that was very delicious. The chicken was bigger than I expected and the Waffle Fries were very tasty. They do have a 4-piece combo for $14.99. Katsu Family Meals are available for $55 - $60. This deal comes with 4 proteins, 2 large rice, a large potato salad and cabbage slaw or a large Wagyu Curry. Other side options are Potato Salad, White Rice, and Curry Cheese Fries (sorry, I do not have a photo of this), it does sound intriguing tho. There is free parking in front of their Cafe. There is seating for about 25 customers if you want to dine indoors. I really felt I got my money's worth and was very satisfied. Give them a try, they are open Tuesday through Sunday (11AM to 8PM)... don't forget to tell'em that Rosemary sent ya.
We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon for a quick lunch. Good options if you want a quick bite to eat. The kids liked the beef bulgogi onigiri a lot (5/5). They have had better spam musibis because the ones here are not as flavorful. We also tried the kimchi fried rice, which was overly salty and the rice was mushy (3/5). The egg salad sando was below par since the bread was dry and the flavor was a bit bland (3/5). It's a cozy atmosphere inside with a good amount of seating if you want to eat there. The servers were very helpful and informative. Next time, we will probably try some of their hot foods.
Easy, convenient, tasty sandos! Tried this place with a friend and wanted their honey walnut shrimp Sando. It was thicker shrimp patty put together in a patty and deep fried with little honey walnut pieces inside, and I believe a condensed milk sauce. Love the flavor especially with the OMG sauce (a spicy sauce recipe) This is more of a unique food item as I would normally go for pork/chicken but I was glad I tried it. I also ordered the Katsu chicken tenders with the waffle fries. Nicely fried and crispy, it came with three sauces the ranch, honey mustard, and omg sauce. Ranch was garlicky and flavorful, and their OMG sauce is a must try for spicy food lovers. The honey mustard was okay. Waffle fries were great and seasoned. I also took an egg Sando for the road and it held up well a day later. Would recommend! Staff were nice and informative, they told me their plates also come with additional items like (potato salad?) and the katsu plate would come with rice. They also had extra snacks and drinks for sale and acted as a mini-mart. Looking forward to eating here again when I come to the area next.
First time visiting, small mini-mart with onigiri, sandwiches and drinks to go, or you can order hot foods like katsu plates, Japanese sizzling steak and unique sandos (sandwiches) and dine in. It was busy on a weekend with limited seating. The food was good but a little pricey. I enjoyed the hamburg dolsot bibimbap, good flavor with generous portions, and it came with miso soup. My husband enjoyed his walnut shrimp sando. Next time we will try the ube coconut cream kakigori shaved ice, it looked really good but we didn't have enough time to get it.
Stop #2 on our Friday Sammy Tour! Small sando/mini mart located on Mission and Las Tunas. Parking is limited in the plaza lot during busy hours. Very nice shop. Open. Bright. Clean. Sam greeted us as we walked in the door, provided us with food recommendations, and was nice enough to let me switch my drink out when I changed my mind later. Went in for the katsu sandwich but fell in love with the honey walnut shrimp sando. So much flavor and plenty of shrimp. We also ordered the waffle fries with furikake and curry on the side. Super filling. Sam must have seen me eyeing the egg salad sando because he graciously offered one to us for free on the way out. Made my freakin day :) Will definitely be back for more.
The parking here is awful, best to try and find a spot in the neighborhood. Small, unassuming spot with clean interior. Some tables for you to dine in. I got the chicken Katsu curry plate. The chicken was perfect, not dry at all and had the perfect amount of crisp. The curry was smooth and delicious.
3 star review for the fruit sando only. I have yet to try the katsu sando or any of the made-to-order food from the kitchen. I got the strawberry cream filled sandwich. Smell & taste a little off. Not quite spoiled but just not right. Not fruity, not milky, not quite sure how to put it. Also, the bread is thinner than I'd like & not soft. I went on a weekday around 2-3pm so it could be not-freshly-made product. For $6-7 bucks per tiny sandwich I'd expected better though. They have other stuff to grab n go like triangle kimbap, japanese egg sandwich, unique snacks, & drinks. Convenient. Staff are nice. This place is located in the bonchon plaza. So ofc parking is terrible.
So normally I think Japanese fast-casual yoshoku places are kind of cringe in the United States because they tend to appeal to bougie customers who want to pay $30 for something that I used to pay $1.25 in a cafeteria for as a student in Japan (this is literally how Japanese curry usually works). But this place WAS NOT like that! Let me be clear, the fried chicken katsu was better than the vast majority of katsu I've had in Japan. It's actually just legitimately, incredibly good. And while kind of on the pricey side, that's really just an artifact of being in California (as opposed to being able to upcharge customers who want to pay extra for cafeteria food because it's Japanese and thus 'fancy'). First, the fried chicken itself is intensely crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. And that's really the judge of fried chicken most of the time because you really aren't changing the basic flavor profile of chicken that much. That being said, the sauces were good and the sandwich had a lot of flavorful veggies/other stuff in it. Love the coleslaw. All my homies love coleslaw. So I will be clear that both the standalone chicken and the sandwich is really good. I would honestly consider this a top-5 chicken sandwich I've had in my entire life. Second, they've got other stuff besides chicken. I tried a bite out of the honey walnut shrimp sandwich and it was good. That being said, it's hard to make a bad version of honey walnut shrimp, so that's my only real commentary. It's good, but I thought the fried chicken was better/more unique. I'm also not sure I would order this to-go or via delivery. Fried chicken is best when it comes right out of the fryer and gets more or less worse every minute after. Furthermore, there isn't a lot of sitting space, though there is some and I guess it's a sandwich so it can be eaten while loitering outside ("wow it's the authentic Japanese delinquent experience"). Service was great and attentive, especially for a counter-serve place! Parking is horrible, so good luck. That plaza is insanely fisted and always will be. You will never find parking nearby, so godspeed. It's still worth it though. Hoping to try the menchi next time!
Katsu Sando has kakigori, which is a welcome treat on a hot summer day. The katsu sandwiches and plates are made-to-order so can take 20 mins to prepare. There's a parking lot in the complex. For the food: The hot cocoa kakigori is super cute and a little messy to eat. I picked up strawberry sando and coffee milk drink for snack.

What We Ordered: -Pork Katsu Plate $16.95 -Original Chicken Katsu Sando $12.95 -Honey Walnut Shrimp Sando $16.95 -Sac Sac Orange $2.50 I've wanted to visit this Japanese-style convenience store. We never had the chance to visit it when we were in Chinatown, but this location is much more convenient for us. I know my wife and son also like Pork Katsu. I wanted to try the Honey Walnut Shrimp Sando. It was good, with a very distinct sweet flavor. My wife and son didn't care for it, but I enjoyed it. My wife saw some people with katsu plates and ordered the Pork Katsu Plate, and my son got the Chicken Katsu Sando. In our opinion, the Pork Katsu was the best. The white bread for the sando complemented the katsu so well. Next time, I'd like to order the Pork Katsu Plate. We would definitely come back here again! It's a bit pricey, but it was worth every penny. read more
Came by on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't busy at all. We ordered online ahead of time and everything was ready when we got there. Casual space with a few self serve tables. I quite enjoyed my original katsu sandwich with chicken - it was nicely breaded, tender, and crispy. Bread was good. Wish there was a bit more sauce. read more

The pork katsu curry was fantastic! And way too much food - plan on sharing this meal or having leftovers. Staff were friendly and served us within about 10 minutes of ordering. The store is extremely cute, with vintage themed packaging. read more

I placed my order through Grubhub and came to the store and picked up. The order was ready and aligned with the ETA from the app. Pickup was easy and straightforward. For parking, I arrived around 5:30, and was fortunate to find parking pretty easily. Normally, you would have trouble finding parking during peak hours. I ordered the Honey Walnut Shrimp Sando and Wagyu Curry Cheese Fries. For the Walnut Shrimp Sando it was really good and sweet. There were nice little pieces of walnut and shrimps between the Sando. There was also a bit of coleslaw, which I wished they had more of. This was the highlight of the order. The waffle fries itself was crispy and has a mayo sauce which tasted great. However, the sauce wasn't evenly coated. Only the top layer was coated with mayo, while the bottom fries were just plain. Additionally, the curry cheese sauce was overwhelming. There was also way too much of that sauce, so I ended up not even using it all. This was my least favorite part of the order. I do think the waffle fries tasted better by itself, but would recommend sharing it, since it's a large portion. read more
I've been wanting to try Katsu Sando for a while. I got the chicken katsu sando, fruit sando, and the egg salad sando. All of them were tasty in their own way. I particularly enjoyed the sauce that came with the chicken sandwich. It is a must! Service was quick and the chicken sandwich was freshly prepared, and the prepackaged sandwiches are made fresh daily. There are many tables and seats for casual dine in option as well. 10/10 I will return again! read more

Oh hi! You cute little store! I came across this eatery going into this shopping center. I'm like this is such a cute place so I wanted to try them out. Customer service is excellent, she was sweet and answered all my questions since it's my first time. They have loaded area of triangle kimbap and egg sandwiches to strawberry filled sandwiches. I didn't get them I just went straight to the cutlet. It was delicious and portions are on the slight small side. It's not much to share with two for sure. Maybe you'll still be hungry with just one cutlet meal. Would I come back? Definitely! I'll definitely try all the items they have. It's super clean but not much place to sit. read more

Came in for a quick grab and was quite surprised how tasty their sandwich was. Since the name is katsu sando, I got a pork katsu sandwich (and you can choose other types of protein). The sandwich is made fresh. Bread is fresh with a tasty Cole slaw in it. The pork katsu was thick, juicy and crunchy with just enough sauce. It also came with a hot sauce, which paired very well with the sandwich. I highly recommend. It's a little pricey for a sandwich but the pork katsu is really thick. You can likely share with someone as a snack. read more

Was looking for new place to try out one night and stumbled upon this place a couple doors down from Bonchon. We ordered the chicken katsu sando and honey walnut shrimp sando. The chicken was nice and meaty but we both agreed that the honey walnut shrimp was the winner here!! Service was chill and there's some tables to sit down out at while waiting for your food, as well as a little water station available. If you're not sure what to get and you're a fan of honey walnut shrimp...Get the honey walnut shrimp sando! It's was crispy, warm, tasty, and packed with shrimp. No ragrets read more

I've been wanting to try this place out for quite awhile but just never made it an eating priority. We came here for dinner Friday night & I was thinking that it would be packed but nope, we were the only ones in there. My husband got the katsu sando and I got the katsu plate. Everything came out fresh & pipping hot in 10mins give or take. I really liked the plate because I felt like it was a huge portion. The chicken was on the bit of a dry side though, even dipping it in the sauce didn't help. My husband said the sando was okay. The fries were so good! So crisp & they give so much. I'd come back to try the honey walnut shrimp one but wouldn't get the chicken sando again. read more
Great food and even better service! I believe it was the Owner who greeted me and helped me order. Answered all my questions and was super kind! I ordered their Manchu Katsu and it was tasty! Especially dipped in their curry! Chef's kiss! I was super excited to try their fruit Sando, but maybe I should have waited a little because the bread was kinda tough sitting in their fridge. I was expecting soft white bread, but overall yummy food. This is their new location with parking and much bigger space. Restaurant is clean and has a ton of seating. read more
2.8 stars Came in for an early dinner and got an Egg Sandwich ($6.95) and Waffle Fries w/ Curry Cheese sauce ($8.95). The egg sandwich is basic, but good...just regular ol' egg and mayo filling. The waffle fries and curry cheese sauce was pretty good. I never would have thought of curry and nacho cheese, but it's a combination that just makes sense! Service was quick and efficient. Ambiance is casual and nothing to write home about. Overall, I think it's a very average fast food spot that is not worth the pricepoint. I didn't try any of the katsu sandos, but those prices were in the double-digits. I might come back if someone drags me here, but I probably wouldn't come back on my own. read more

I was pretty skeptical at first but came to try Katsu Sando out of sheer curiosity! I came on a Wednesday evening around 6:30pm and there was only one parking spot left! The store was pretty much empty. I got the honey walnut sando and shared a curry waffle fries. The honey walnut shrimp sando is delicious! The bread is perfectly QQ and chewy. The shrimp patty is made with lots of shrimp and cooked very perfectly. The patty is deep fried and coated in a sweet mayo. There's also candied walnuts that give it a nice crunch, as well as a cabbage slaw. The waffle fries were average. Wait time took around 15-20 minutes despite us being the only people in the store. Service is pretty friendly but not very fast. There is one gender neutral restroom and it's pretty clean! The interior is very low-key and gives "diner"-vibes. I love that there's lots of drinks, dessert options in the plaza for afterward! read more
Parking is a hit or miss. The Plaza has so many stores that parking can be tricky during peak lunch or dinner rush. Katsu Sando is a hybrid convenience store and fried katsu sandwich place. Ordered the Honey Walnut Shrimp. $13.95. Pretty tasty. They fried the Shrimps into a patty and put some Walnuts, Katsu Sauce, Mayo, and cabbage together. I also got a Calpico to drink $3.95. Service took a little longer than usual due to outside bulk order. They do have Kakigori but today's flavor was Watermelon so I passed. read more
Used a third party app to place an order for pickup since I wanted the sandwich to be ready when I got there. I ended up phoning in to follow up since these apps usually gives you a time range when the food is done and I didn't want my sandwich to be just sitting there. The staff that answered was friendly. Even gave me an exact time of when to pick up. When I got there, it was ready to go. I can still feel my sandwich was nice and hot, which meant they didn't make it ahead of time and just let it sit there, which I appreciated. I got the Honey Walnut Shrimp Sando. It's not really photogenic. But I can tell you it was delicious in my mouth. The quantity is huge. So if you're hungry, you won't be after you're done. They don't skimp on the fillings. Unfortunately, one slice of the bread was rather soggy since the dressing had absorbed into it. The filling wasn't overly sweet; right balance of sweet and salty. Quick Notes: -3rd party app pricing and in store pricing are the same -parking in this plaza is terrible -ambiance is not a sit down, tables are waited on; grab your food from counter and find a table yourself. read more
PRO-TIP: There's a couple days left, but you can still do a Yelp check-in for a side of curry dip with a $20 purchase as part of the month-long "Travel Like an SGV Local" series of events, experiences, and goodies. I've been meaning to try Katsu Sando for awhile now, especially seeing the hype around it and the fact that I keep passing by each time I stop to shop at Paper Cola. I think this same brand is having a Uniqlo shirt collaboration upcoming as well? Needless to say, finally got the opportunity to do so! They have a pretty simple, straightforward menu, as well as a small refrigerated area for some of their prepared food like onigiri, their fruit and potato/egg salad sandwiches, and canned/bottled drinks. For summer, they have a mango kakigori shaved ice as well. In the back there's also a small merchandise shop with shirts and other goods of their brand, as well as snacks like chips. Service was helpful and patient especially with the line building up. Very casual eatery with most people doing pick up orders and an okay amount of seating inside. Plaza does get fisted with traffic so the method is to either park at the free lot like a block or so down or park at Blossom Market and walk over. On top of the Yelp check-in offer, we also got the: 1) Egg Salad Sandwich: -This was a prepared sandwich you can get from the front. -Not too sour and mayonnaise tasting. Solid tasty egg salad, just wish the bread was a tad less dry. 2) Pork Katsu Sando: -It comes pre-sliced in 2 huge portions. Very shareable or perfect if you want to save half of a sandwich for later! -The katsu is not too dry and decently meaty and moist on the inside. -I feel like the bread would have been a bit dry too but the slaw, bit of curry, the sauce, and the dips we had compensated for that with flying colors. -Pretty solid katsu sandwich. 3) Wagyu Curry Cheese Fries: -I am guess the wagyu is boiled into the cheese that they make as a dip/for you to drizzle on later? That or maybe the fries themselves were fried with or prepared with wagyu in some way since it's not like a carne asada style fries with pieces of meat with it. -Regardless, nicely crispy on the outside, moist and fluffy on the inside waffle fries. Great junky snack to go with the curry and cheese dips we got. -We also got a sweet Tabasco style sauce too, not bad but we preferred the richness of the dips. I'd like to stop by and try one of their curry plates and potentially their new seasonal items or something unique like their walnut shrimp sando. read more
Finally got to try Katsu Sando on a recent Sunday's lunch. We shared: Egg salad sandwich - nice little snack while waiting for the main course. You just grab this from the open fridge. Although I think it should really be at most $5 for what you get. Honey Walnut shrimp Sando - this was really delicious and juicy! Although a bit messy! Chicken Katsu - This was dried. They had a free curry dip promo with a purchase over $20 and it was definitely needed. Waygu Curry Chizu Waffle Chizu Fries - waffle fries that comes with a cheesy curry sauce. I'm not sure which part of the sauce or fries has Waygu? Small Kakigori mango shave ice - this was the best item actually out of everything ! It has fresh mangos and pandan tapioca. So refreshing on a hot summer day! Overall I wish the chicken would be moist and the bread would be better toasted, the highlight was definitely the mango shave ice. I do appreciate they have a self serve water station. read more

Got their kakigori to share, yum! What a refreshing dessert to eat on a warm, sunny day. Service was good and restaurant is clean. Parking lot can be a little busy. Their flavors rotate, so will be back! read more
Nice place to get a Katsu Sandwich, or as a plate but I'd recommend Kazumori for Katsu plates. Prepare to wait a little as everything hot is made fresh. The hidden gem is the shave ice--they really do import the ice block from Japan, where it's made to certain standards. Crazy clean ice--you should watch them make it. For up to a few people, a small should work. read more
There's not a lot of places that sell Japanese egg sandos in the area. It's located in the same plaza as Bonchon. [Food 3/5]: I only tried the famous Japanese egg sando. It wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing either. The bread was kind of dry and the egg was kind of lacking and didn't meet my expectations. [Ambiance 4/5]: The store reminded me of a small convenient store with a compact kitchen that serves fresh food. The egg sandos were already pre-made in the refrigerated section. I also noticed they sell a lot of Japanese drinks and snacks. If you wish to dine in, there are a few seats available indoors. Not sure how long they've been there, but overall the store looked clean and modern. The egg sando was a good try, but I've had better. read more
I was so excited when I heard Katsu Sando opened up in SGV! I haven't been to their Chinatown location but I always heard great things about their sandwiches so I had to try Katsu Sando right away. Oh also, parking in that plaza is kind of a battle, so we chose to park elsewhere and walk over! I was pleasantly surprised when I first walked in because of the deli-like decor and how open and inviting it is. Love their logo and the colors! They sell quick to-go options like egg sando and onigiris, they even have chips and other snacks! Menu is pretty straight forward with a lot of options. Aside from sandwiches they also have curry plates, yum :) There's tables and seating, but by the time we got there (11:30 am ish on a Saturday) it was already full. You would order at the front, and kinda wait on the sides wherever there's space for them to call your name. Sandwiches roughly take 15-20 mins to make so there was quite a bit of people waiting too. I have tried (on 2 separate occassions) the pork katsu, honey walnut shrimp katsu, and the snow crab korokke roll. Also have tried the curry cheese fries. Pork katsu is so crispy and delicious. You cannot go wrong here, especially when pairing with the curry sauce from the curry cheese fries! My favorite is the honey walnut shrimp katsu because of the sweet and savory combo. I love the candied walnuts for added crunch. I recently tried the snow crab korokke roll which is 3 crab croquettes in a bread roll. Delicious :o Aesthetically pleasing also, like art in a sandwich box!! Definitely pricier but, hey, every now and then you should treat yo self. In the past 2 years, Japanese style sandwiches made fresh have become somewhat trendy in the LA area. I've seen quite a few locations, from Katsu Sando to Pillow Talk in Pasadena. I knew Katsu Sando had opened a branch in San Gabriel, and eventually I decided to give this place a try. Compared to Japanese sandwiches in Japanese convenience stores, these sando restaurants tend to be slightly pricier, which was why I held off for the longest time. However, given this restaurant also has unique things like curry waffle fries, I decided to give it a try. Katsu Sando is a fairly small establishment, with a few tables and seats. Ordering is done at the counter, no waiters. The staff are nonetheless very nice and attentive. We ended up sharing a menchi katsu sando and curry cheese waffle fries. Menchi katsu sandos are everywhere, but I'd never had curry cheese fries before. The waffle fries were fresh, and went super well with curry and cheese. It's an excellent combination, especially for someone like me who loves chili cheese fries. The menchi katsu sando came with an optional spicy sauce on the side. The beef was super juicy and tasty, and the bread was crispy. The spicy sauce definitely added some accent to everything. It was an amazing experience, and definitely I will come back again. read more
I ordered the pork katsu sando and waffle fries recently and while the waffle fries were crisp and seasoned nicely, I really wasn't impressed by the pork katsu sando. I loved that the bread was toasted and everything was freshly made, but there wasn't a lot flavor. The pickled(?) cabbage was not the best and kind of overpowered the rest of the sandwich. I would've enjoyed it more if it was more representative of a katsu dish, with more thinly sliced cabbage and perhaps plain or even sesame dressing. At the minimum, perhaps the pork cutlet itself needs more dressing or seasoning. The service was pretty great but I'm not sure I'll be back. read more
