As someone dining alone, I did appreciate that they didn't bat an eye to placing a single person at one of their tables. Everything was really fresh and delicious. Had pieces that were incentive and creative as well as traditional just good seafood as well. Initial reopen of dine in during COVID pandemic. Where do I start? I rarely review, but when the food and experience is this inspiring, I cannot help but share. The space is meticulous, spaced well, and staff are in appropriate PPE throughout the night. Indoor and outdoor dining is available. I do recommend calling to make reservations for dinner. Never had to ask for hot tea refills, knew exactly when I needed more napkins, and was knowledgeable regarding dishes being served. Highly recommend starting with Rakumori appetizer- sampler of their top apps. These are refreshing and creative dishes that one does not find in just any Japanese restaurant. Having eaten the spicy tuna crispy rice and baked crab roll, then moving on to Omakase was like going to a Beyoncé concert and realizing the opening act was Mariah Carey! *insert your own example of powerhouse duos* We followed with Omakase- noting our favorites to chef to take into consideration, and boy did he deliver! The seafood here is not only of utmost quality, but is skillfully cut and prepared to allow for that "melt in your mouth" experience. The sauce (whatever magic is brushed on these), wasabi, and any other additional garnishes (flakes of salt, caviar, garlic butter, etc) was expertly paired with the right fish and in the right amount- allowing for an explosion of flavor, but still respecting traditional Japanese goal of allowing the quality of fish to shine through! Icing on the cake? Probably the best sushi rice we have had here in Seattle. Seattle has many great sushi spots, but the rice here is what stood out to us immediately upon first bite and we knew this would be a place we would come back to. Not exact replica from my favorite in LA but it's close enough. It just tastes better over there. Also the jalapeños here are nowhere close to being spicy. So there's that. I loved the salmon trio, nigiris and hand roll that I ordered. It tends to be on the more pricey side and i was pretty sad about the roll that I got. It was $12 for a roll of rice and didn't have much stuff in it. It definitely was not worth it. One thing I have to give great prop for was how well they handled everything to keep it safe and clean for customers. They check your temperature, give you wet napkins to clean your hands, and a little bag to toss stuff to dispose. All the staff wore mask and waitress wore face shield so I felt really safe and great that the staff are safe. Everything on their menu was amazing and customer service was on point! This place will be my new go-to place for sushi and other japanese food items. Our server was very personable and everyone was so accommodating. Specifically, we had multiple folks come by to check in on us, and I really appreciated that. Outdoor seating is available but its limited (only three open tables) due to Covid so come early! They do have one of those patio heaters so that helps as the weather is getting cooler. I have noticed that they keep the place clean and will sanitize the tables for you especially if you're seated outside. The waiters here wear double protection (face shield + mask) and every customers are required to get their temperature checked, which i appreciate they take those safety precautions. While the food was good, I do wish they had better dessert options. Today we were told they only have ice cream (vanilla, matcha, red bean) but it sounds like they will expand the dessert menu eventually so i will look forward to that. I was sat outside (no seating allowed indoors currently for COVID restrictions) and the waiter was great and turned on the heat lamp behind me. Was nice and toasty for it being 45° out. I was pleasantly surprised with the food here. Docking a star because I kept having to wait to get my tea refilled. They kept refilling everyone's cup's around us but not ours. I even once said "yes please," when they asked for refills in our section and was still ignored while that server filled the tea cups of the two young women next to us and then left. I eventually had to flag someone down for my tea from across the room as they came back out of the kitchen from putting their tea pot back. I dunno maybe just a fluke honestly, but it still was kinda weird. Another weird thing for me was that their menu would ping pong between English and Japanese names for different items that were very similar. I noticed it as I was reading through the menu, and I can't grasp why they'd do that unless they were just trying to make the menu look like there was more variety than there was? Honestly, I don't know. And I was a bit sad that they called their Mochi ice cream just "Mochi" on their menu, cuz I was pretty excited to have some Daifukumochi for dessert, but I can grab mochi ice cream at Safeway ya know? Eh...anyway... I will say that Yuta is an amazing server though. We only came into contact with him around the second half of our meal, and he is so polite and professional. It honestly seems like he came from a high end restaurant or something. He definitely stood out positively. If I walk past the restaurant in the future, and I see Yuta working through the window I'd probably pop back in for another bite. Other than that, even though the food was good, I don't feel an intense pull to go back. There are so many restaurants to choose from in Seattle with amazing food, great service, and more affordable prices that I would probably prefer to patronize in the future. My wife and I were searching for an outdoor venue to celebrate our anniversary. Katsuy-Ya on Westlake in South Lake Union had good reviews and pictures on Yelp looked very appetizing. I made reservations requesting an outside table with no issues. Parking can be a challenge so arrive early to find paid street parking. The staff is super polite and courteous. The manager Jonathan Lee was our server as they were short staffed. Service could not have been better. Jon helped us order since this was our first visit. We started with a few Happy Hour specials. The open hand roll trio was great. We would order this again for sure. A great value 3/$6. My wife enjoyed the Crispy salmon skin at $3. We also had Edamame. For the main course we shared the large nigiri platter which included miso soup, a nice Japanese salad, 9-10 pieces of nigiri along with an 8 piece tuna cucumber roll. We had the shrimp and vegetable tempura which was cooked to perfection. Believe it or not I have had my share of poorly cooked tempura but this with excellent lightly coated and crisp. We asked Jon to gauge if we were over or under ordering and he held back placing the 4 1/2 roll which we had ordered. This was wise decision by Jon and We thanked him. We capped the evening off with Matcha and Strawberry Mochi ice cream. An excellent meal and excellent service! I can't believe I haven't tried this place until yesterday. Do NOT come here expecting to eat deep fried rolls or that type of crap. This place is for REAL sushi lovers. What initially drew us into trying this place is they serve caviar by the ounce for a great price! Just average. The 4.8 rating gave me high hopes, but I must have missed the better days. Waiting at the door for a bit, since it seemed like there were only two busy waiters. Once I sat down, I had 3 people ask me what I wanted and run off in less time than I was waiting at the door. I rushed to order the "Rakumori" dish on the third waiter, which was good, but not incredible. Everything that wasn't fish seemed prepared earlier that day and was not very fresh; the wasabi had a dry, oxidized exterior that was starting to turn brown, and the outside of the ginger had dried up. The rice taste and texture was like it had been sitting for half a day, and ruined an otherwise nice slice of tuna belly. I asked for a hand roll, but instead of a traditionally cone-shaped hand roll, I just got a normal roll that was half size and unsliced; its turns out if a hand roll is not in the cone shape and you try eating my it, the contents squeeze out the back.
