The location is also ideal, right in the heart of L.A. Live. We stopped in before a show at the Grammy Museum, and it made for the perfect start to the evening. Our server, Misa, was an absolute delight. He was warm, personable, and happened to share a hobby with my dinner date, so they had a great time exchanging stories, experiences, and tips. It's always nice when service feels genuinely personal. We started with the White Fish Carpaccio and Yellowtail Jalapeño. Both fresh, flavorful, and exactly what you'd hope for from classic sushi starters. We followed that with several baked crab hand rolls, which were delicious. The highlight of the meal, though, was the custom dipping sauce Misa made for us. The flavor was incredible, with just the right amount of spice, and it elevated the hand rolls to another level. I don't think I'll ever want to eat a crab hand roll without his sauce again! Overall, it was a wonderful experience with excellent service, fresh food, and a great atmosphere. To be perfectly honest, I loathe what sbe has done to the Katsuya name and typically avoid these locations. If you want to know the true Katsuya, you would visit the Studio City location or the Encino location (in that order). I have not visited Northridge or Woodland Hills, but they are also not part of the corporatized sbe empire. This one most certainly is. And exemplifies exactly what I loathe about sbe's involvement in Katsuya. All they've done is taken this man's masterful inventions and semi-replicated them in the most efficient and careless way possible. All integrity is lost. Instead of the food taking center stage, they hide behind the Phillip Starck designs and stylings. The food was most certainly not freshly made. Food: 4/5 the crispy rice is always the star of the show here. We also had the rock shrimp, the o-toro (market price: $22 as of March 2026), and salmon lemon specialty roll. The crispy rice, o-toro & rock shrimp were all fantastic choices. Salmon lemon specialty roll was good but didn't steal the show like the others. Ambiance: dim lighting which makes for a romantic setting, feels like an elevated dining experience. Decor around the restaurant feels outdated, reminds me of a Las Vegas nightclub but maybe that's just the vibe. Service: Good service - we were sat right away (~8:30pm on a Saturday night after a Kings game). The food came out very quickly, server was nice & checked on us often + made sure we had everything we needed and kept our waters constantly refilled. So, I came here because I was visiting the Grammy Museum just down the way (which I also recommend) and I had a very pleasant experience. After seeing the low score and several negative reviews, I was a bit worried. I had eaten at this restaurant's other locations and loved the food, decor and service so I was confused why this location got such bad reviews. Turns out, I was worried for nothing! While I did come on a weekday and early (6pm), I did not experience any of what others had written about this location. I had a very nice server who was never too far or ignored me. The food was the same high quality I remembered from my other visits and the decor was modern but upscale (I was told though that they will be renovating soon so stay tuned for a new look). My only real complaint that the prices felt a bit high but nothing outrageous. Figuring it's Katsuya and this location gets a lot of tourism, it's not really a surprise. All in all, I enjoyed my experience and would eat here again if I am ever in the area. read more

Is there a 3.5? Came here before the sparks game for a quick bite. They had the game playing, so we sat in the cocktail bar. I got a lychee martini to start. Definitely more lychee juice than vodka, so it was a bit too sweet. We then got the white fish carpaccio, which I thought was okay. Wish it was more acidic, since it was relatively bland. Crisp on top was a nice textural touch though. For the main, we shared the miso cod, and it gave Trader Joe's. Fish was cooked well, but the flavoring was sweet and thick. Server at the bar was amazing. Real attentive, never let a water glass get too empty. He was wonderful. Vibes were also ok, but the place was empty, so that should've been the sign. read more

I had been to Katsuya (Hollywood location) several times before it closed and absolutely loved it! When thinking of a restaurant to celebrate a special birthday last night I chose this location of Katsuya but the service we experienced was so awful (and aggressive) that we elected to leave after the two appetizers we consumed. We waited about 5 minutes to be greeted by our waiter. I asked "how are you," he replied "Fine, what can I get you to drink?" I asked how their espresso martini was, he replied "not good, just cold brew and vodka. I'd order something else." My partner asked about the lychee martini, he said it was pretty bad and to order something else. Ok, we appreciate the honesty and ordered standard martinis. When it was time to order I asked if the meal could be coursed out so it didn't all arrive at the same time. His response was aggressive and combative and something to the tune of "the kitchen is gonna do what they're going to do..." Since he was being rather aggressive I mentioned to him "this is a special occasion that we're celebrating and we'd like to have a nice night." Again, his response was rushed, distasteful and rude. It was at this time my partner recommended to me that we leave. We had brought a cake to be served for dessert, while my partner was settling the bill at the host station the waiter comes back and slams it on the table and says "I guess you're done." In addition to the awful service, the ambiance felt very dated and run down while lacking the upscale appearance that the Hollywood location offered. The two food items we did order weren't great either... Their signature spicy tuna crispy rice tasted stale, and the waygu ishiyaki was tiny in portion and lacked flavor. We left and headed to Sushi Enya in Little Tokyo which was absolutely fabulous and was able to turn the night around for us. Based on this one experience I'll never come back here and would highly recommend that the management is aware of what kind of service is being provided here. read more

The restaurant was almost empty but still the waitstaff was not very attentive. Obviously you're at LA Live so prices are going to be exorbitant. I've only gone here twice in the past with an ex, but as it was a meal not paid by me and much fancier than usual, don't mind! I've only gone when Anime Expo is happening next door and with the nature of weebs wanting to eat sushi and Japanese food when there's an anime convention literally next door and within walking distance, you have to put in a reservation or you're cooked to be honest. Service is phenomenal here, as expected of a "fancier" dining establishment and from checking in to when we were ready to leave, everyone was super welcoming and courteous. Making sure to check in on us and were all smiles, even when it was a super busy time (we went during dinner too, which means the vendor's hall and artist alley are closed so a good chunk of people are out of the con). Ambiance is very busy and lively, but the dimmed lights, decor, and interior holds up in making it look nicer. I've had the: crispy rice with spicy tuna (had this maybe over a decade ago before they had it everywhere - fresh fish and delicious crunch in the rice), Robata sweet corn (can never go wrong with corn on the cob anywhere and the shichimi citrus butter added a delicious twist to this classic), shrimp tempura (ex couldn't handle any real raw fish so this was a solid go to roll), and miso black cod (delicious glaze and moist fish - good stuff). They also threw in a dessert since we were there to celebrate our anniversary which was nice. Happy that cringe chapter of my life is over, but at least I got to try Katsuya through it! read more

I was staying at the Ritz-Carlton nearby, so it was geographically desirable. Walking distance. But if I'm gonna lay Katsuya prices I expect Katsuya quality. I did not get that quality. I got albacore nigiri, Brussel sprouts, a rock shrimp roll, a house salad, lobster tenpura and two orders of the steak kushiyaki. We ate it because...desperation. But I would not run to spend my money there again. It kept me from passing out, but left me sad. If you're looking for the true, proper Katsuya experience...avoid the LA live version. read more

Love coming here before an LA Kings game for an early dinner. On weekdays, there usually isn't much of a wait around 5pm, and we were seated very quickly. We got the Sushi Set , which included 4 crispy rice pieces, 2 specialty rolls, 9 nigiri, 12 sashimi pieces. The specialty rolls we got were the Corn Crunch roll and the Katsuya roll. The quality of the fish was so good, especially the tuna and yellowtail pieces. Dishes came out quickly and were phenomenal. Drink options included a lineup of signature cocktails, sake, and wine. Dessert piqued our interest from neighboring tables; we'll definitely be back to try some desserts!!! I'd highly recommend for a pre-game bite or a date night in downtown LA. I used to love Katsuya, but the quality of food compared to the prices, is just no longer there. Sadly. The ambiance is cute and I'd say it's great for drinks but not a fan of the food. There are definitely other places with better sushi and quality fish. We got there right when they opened so I was surprised to learn that they didn't have scallops or their Branzino available. The rice to the spicy tuna crispy rice fell apart as soon as you tried to pick it up. The outside pieces of the chicken were pretty dried and hard but the inside was perfectly cooked. But..nothing special about the chicken with teriyaki. The only thing that was up to par was their tomahawk short rib and their corn crunch roll (not pictured) Their rock shrimp was alright. nothing special. Service was okay. For a place that was yet to be packed, the server barely stopped by to check if we wanted to order more or needed anything else. I sat at the sushi bar and ordered as I went - just followed my vibe. I started with the yellowtail jalapeño which was fresh, refreshing and a perfect start. The chef did not over sauce as many do. Next was Hokkaido Scallop Sashimi starter - and if I have room at the end, I will repeat. The nuttiness of the puffed rice was an excellent touch. I then moved onto the Corn Crunch Specially Roll. I was a bit skeptical of the corn tempura but it was a sweet crunchy balance to the sweet shrimp Next was Tai (Japanese sea bream) and Tamago sashimi. Both delicious. SCAM: Check your receipts for the automatic 5% wellness charge!! I haven't been to Katsuya in awhile. It was the place to be back in the day, but going there yesterday before a hockey game, it just seems so forgotten. Look at the menu, it's all beat up and gross. I would think a place that charges all this money too would have nice chopsticks, not throwaway wood chopsticks. That all could be overlooked if the food was good. It was not. My kiddos ordered the salmon with mushrooms which were fine. My husband and I ordered the albacore jalapeno appetizer and the sushi sampler. The fish was dull and did not taste fresh at all. The rice was hard like it had been in the fridge, that texture, and was definitely not made fresh, or anytime near service. No wasabi was given. Or ginger. No water refills. By that time, I gave up trying to flag down our waiter let alone anyone else. We ordered the mochi donuts which sounds good, I said let's give it a try. It was good in theory. There was no mochi chewy texture AT ALL. Like, it should have just been put on the menu as donut balls! It was fried a bit too much and the outside was crunchy (per my daughter and I totally agree). We got the receipt and look at the 5% wellness charge they automatically add, which you can ASK for them to take off. Like why are we responsible for paying their worker's comp and health benefits?!?! That is such a SHADY move. So ridiculous. I work hard for my money as well to be able to go out for a nice dinner. Such a SCAM. The service was so lacking as well. He didn't ask for drink orders, came by once after food was brought to ask if it was ok, but just always seemed like he was in a hurry, short, no pleasantries, like we were bothering him for being there. Also, we were seated outside and it was a bit chilly. I heard the table next to us ask as they were sitting down the same time as us if they could turn on the heater. They forgot. I had to ask 3 more times for them to do so and by then, we were pretty much done with our dinner. Listen.. I work in the service industry. I absolutely support health benefits for servers and managers of restaurants - they work so hard and earn it. But I do think it's incredibly tacky and a bad look for the restaurant to charge its customers the fee for that. You're already making money off of us - use your business to pay for your employees' health care. And putting "you can ask for it to be taken off" isn't a get-out-of-jail free card. That just makes your customers feel bad and feel like jerks when it's not our responsibility to do this in the first place. Also, our waiter looked kind of annoyed we wanted to add something to our food order. Felt pretty rushed and it's not busy at all.. I mean I'm counting the tables and there are a total of 5 tables (this includes us). Food was okay. I got the salmon and hamachi sushi and it was definitely great quality fish. The corn crunch roll was not my favorite. The crispy rice tasted kind of buttery actually which was different.. Anyway. Anyway, the restaurant was mostly empty which I liked- we had a lot of attention and waited for nothing. I put photos of what we ate and drank. All was good except the lychee martini. My daughter sent it back and even spoke to the very nice bartender but I guess he didn't have the ingredients she was used to. Her flaming drink did the trick though- she had two of those! Everything we ate was solid fresh and tasty but my favorite were the Wagyu Gyoza. We had to have another order. Anyway, it was worth every penny to eat there, close out and then go to the bar.
