WHEW this was disappointing. I had been wanting to check out Level 8 and specifically Lucky Mizu for some time. After planning a time that worked w my party, we made a reservation a few weeks in advance and eagerly awaited the night. Parking in this part of DTLA at night, especially on a Saturday night, is an exercise in patience. You will almost certainly not find street parking, free or metered, and will have to rely on DTLA's notorious price gouging outdoor parking lots. When we visited, there was a Kings game playing, the holiday ice rink, and another outdoor event going on so our parking fee was $30. The experience started to sour almost entirely upon arriving. We were blocked from entering the building to access Level 8 before we mentioned that we had a reservation at which point we were directed to the elevator. At Level 8; there was no hostess at the host stand for Lucky Mizu so we just walked into the restaurant looking for a staff member to speak to about where to sit. This resulted in a member of the staff rushing out, clearly annoyed with us, and walking us back to the host stand. We mentioned our reservation and her attitude was so strong and frankly strange that we were confused what we had done to even remotely warrant this?? We were sat at the sushi bar which is the only place you are able to reserve online in advance but Mizu is known for their picturesque butterfly booths so this was confusing as well. Service was quick but cold and honestly the entire vibe of this restaurant felt so off we ended up leaving Mizu in under 45 mins ,,, Given the strange attitudes, cramped atmosphere, and pricy menu, I won't be returning. It is unfortunate that we liked our meal but I don't think it is good enough to make up for all this. Came here for the ayce hand rolls. A cool concept but after eating its a but if a gimmick. Some items were not included in ayce and we had to pay $6 extra. For example the uni & caviar as well as the Toro. When I thought about it, after paying for my food, I would've had the same options plus more at a regular ayce sushi restaurant (minus the uni_caviar). There were not appetizers included with the ayce, strictly hand rolls As far as service, there was a bit of confusion with the orders. Mainly trying to figure out who ordered what, but nothing to gripe about. My issue is that I saw a certain type of ice in a bucket with ice I really like. Aka nugget ice. I told the server I would like some of that ice. He was hesitant but complied anyways. A little later I asked for more ice but this time from a different waiter. This review is for the ayce handroll menu! My boyfriend and I came on a weekend night and we were seated promptly at the bar. The ayce is 38 a person and there's 8 types of rolls to choose from. There's also 4 premium rolls that are 6 each that's not part of the ayce. There's an additional ayce sake and beer for 28. We didn't get that. We tried all of them except the cucumber avocado one. Our favorites were the salmon with chili oil, yellowtail, and spicy shrimp. I feel like those are the most bang for your buck too. The fish is fresh and the rice is good sushi rice. The seaweed unfortunately a bit soggy. Probably cause the rice was too warm and made it soggy. Overall, we had a good time. Service was quick enough and they let us order rolls quickly. Semi private tables available for parties of 4-5, but what was unique about this place was that they had bar seating with individual hot plates to give you a more personalized shabu shabu experience. I've never had shabu shabu at the bar. Love this concept. So just as the other places, you pick your broth and then your choice of protein. Broth: bone broth (the most famous), tom yum, mushroom, and dashi (forgot what the latter was). Protein: prime ribeye, kurabota pork, A5 Kobe, A5 Miyazaki, A5 Kagoshima, premium seafood (seasonal options that rotate-was hoping for the shellfish option but was a little late in the season for it I suppose), tofu, or extra seasonal vegetables. All orders come with seasonal vegetables, noodles, and bowl of white rice. You also get four sauces (soy sauce, peanut, ponzu, teriyaki). Once you have your order the rest is self explanatory. I got the bone broth and decided to go with the premium seafood (pacific snapper and king salmon). The seafood was good but harder to eat because it often broke into pieces and settled at the bottom. Lucky Mizu is a stylish, modern shabu shabu spot in downtown LA with a chic vibe located inside Level 8. The interior and the vibes are amazing. However the food, price, and service don't live up to those expectations. The menu has plenty of creative cocktails, handrolls and shabu shabu as well as seiro mushi (steamed hot pot without the broth). Our table was impressed with the cocktails and the handrolls - the wagyu one probably being everyone's favorite. But the shabu shabu was underwhelming. Small portions at such a high price point and not enough broth options. The dipping sauces were the tiniest portions too, like just a tablespoon. That's not enough to be dipping your food in. Service is also very slow, from the we time ordered and to when we got our food it took over twenty minutes. Gonna try to paint the picture in as few words as possible. Sorry for the long narrative: 1) I planned out a special night for my wife throughout all of Level 8 2) Had reservations set at Lucky Mizu for Dinner to Mr. Wanderlust for Cocktails and Entertainment and then to Sinners and Santos for Drinking and Dancing for Latin Night 3) Showed up for our 6:45 PM reservation at Lucky Mizu but was turned away 3 times stating they didn't have seats available. After being seated 40 minutes later, service took 20 minutes to take our order, and another 30 minutes to be served. Food was 'okay', there was no entertainment, and multiple customers were unhappy with similar slow service... but some of them were comped parts of their meals.. we didn't even get a sorry until we spoke to the manager on our way out, expressing the reason was they had no idea it would be this busy on a Thursday (they take reservations, so...), and also blamed an 'all you can eat promotion' they promoted earlier, and they only had two serves on staff that night. 4) We were late to Mr. Wanderlust, but were luck to get two seats at the bar after another couple left. We order two cocktails and a coffee... and were charged just over $140. Then, we were asked to move because they wanted to take our seats. We asked about the bill to the bartendar, and she expressed that since she didn't take our original order, she couldn't help us. She simply just had us stand there. We were not going to pay since it seemed way off... until finally we spoke to a guy walking by. We showed him our ticket/receipt and said out loud, "this isn't right". He came back quickly with a revised bill of almost $120. This was still far too high, but no one else seemed interested in helping us find resolve, so we ate it since we didn't want to be late for part 3 of the night. 5) Hoping to salvage the night with drinks and dancing... we tried to find the entrance to Sinners and Santos for their advertised Latin night. We had made reservations here too, and had full confirmation of the reservation... BUT, after finally being directed to the entrance (outside on the patio), they were closed. No sign of why and no one who worked at the other locations had a reason, but they were just simply closed. 6) So, after paying $35 for parking, about $140 in cocktails and food while waiting for our initial reservation at Golden Hour and Que Barbaro, $150+ for dinner at Lucky Mizu, and $120 at Mr. Wanderlust... approximately $500 total... we didn't even get to dance. Maybe this place had a bad night, but based on what the workers said, and how they treated us... it sure seems like the norm. Don't get me wrong, the place is cool... some really great experiential elements and nice photo ops... but I would have had a much better time somewhere else. We ordered both the shabu shabu in bone broth with the ribeye and the seiro mushi (steamed no broth) with the A5 Miyazaki. The broth came wrong on the shabu shabu and they somehow managed to get every dipping sauces we ordered wrong as well. The meat portions on both the shabu and the seiro mushi were also super stingy...either they're not honest about how much they give you or they're incompetent at measuring the correct portions. The meat itself was decent quality, but I just was absolutely insulted with the portions. The hostesses that check you in and seat you were super friendly, but the server was a completely different sorry. The server seemed bitchy and annoyed the whole time and barely came by to check up on us. Also, they have printed instructions in case you're not familiar with shabu shabu, but other than that, the server offered absolutely no guidance at all. Maybe they're just looking to capture the business of people staying at the hotel, but the experience overall is subpar and mediocre at best. You can tell they actually pay attention to thier craft. But what really made it for me was the people. Lucky Mizu aesthetically is such a vibe. A small funky restaurant at the Moxie that transports you to a trendy mini Supperclub somewhere in Tokyo. A reservation is a must, otherwise you will be left in the dust. We arrived within our 15 minute grace period and were seated five minutes later. Unfortunately the party after us missed their grace period window, and their table was given away. Because there is not a lot of seating at this restaurant, if you do not have a reservation, there's a chance you will have to wait quite a while. With only a few booths for dining, my husband and I were placed at the bar. I didn't mind, because I knew the restaurant was sort of a laid-back vibe anyway. There was a DJ, lots of staff, and a gorgeous harp near the ceiling, but unfortunately no harp player during our 10:15pm to 11:30pm visit (Tokyo Nights). Friendly staff and the food arrived quickly. But unfortunately the food itself was not good. Everything was just ok. Everything was not only lacking in flavor but lacking in quality! And for the prices..that's not cool. This was the most expensive shabu shabu dining experience I have ever had. It also was definitely not the easiest to locate either. Once we found the elevator that takes you to the Level 8 floor, we had to ask around to find where to check in for the restaurant as the floor has other restaurants and bars. I opted for the 4 ounces of kurobuta pork shabu shabu with the bone broth as the base. The food came out very nicely presented. I have to give kudos for the presentation. I had to ask the server for the status of our food a few times though to get all components of the shabu shabu. I am not pleased with that because for such an establishment and price point, service should be on point. The food itself was good, but it was not good enough to justify its price point. Lol This place was the first place where the customers reacted more than the place itself. Yesh, it looked like a bougie place. Really nice decor and all. I went with a good friend here. She wore black jeans and a flannel top. Something simple and comfortable for shabu shabu. She got the looks from some lame gals while we were entering. Like mind your own business geez The host was okay. A bit disappointed because our seats were taken?? The host guided us inside the actual restaurant and noticed that there were people at our table already, so we had to go back outside (the library) to wait. The wait wasn't long. We got seated at the other side. The place was stuffy... Everything else about this place was great. The food was amazing. Short music shows during our visit, which made the ambiance even better. Service was good. It wasn't the greatest and not the attentive kind, but it was good. Parking sukz. The closest parking to this place cost $40!!!! After parking, you still gotta walk outside of the building and then go toward the side of the building where Moxi is located at to find the entrance. Pls review the menu carefully before placing your order. Now, this place is already expensive, but if you just use your eyes and brain to do some thinking, it will just be expensive instead of super super expensive lol read more

I saw this restaurant on my IG a while ago and aww the wondering ambiance and decorations it had and I finally got to try it out... This restaurant is in the "Level 8" building in DTLA and is quite busy..parking is easy and if you valet, it's $40. I made a reservation so the seating was easy. Once I was sat down I was greeted by a fantastic "waiter"? Not sure but he was running around just like everyone else behind the bar. We ended up at the bar seats which I wasn't too happy about considering they have tables on the other side and I wasn't given a choice. On to the food, I ordered quite a bit of sushi, including sashimi and some rolls. Honestly, a bit disappointed in the quality of the food. It definitely did not live up to the price it costs $24 for 4 pieces I'd expect better quality. The rolls were decent, nothing impressive and portions were small. This is one of those "destination locations" or a place you visit just once because it actually has a very attractive and pretty ambiance / seating. Sushi was very average, and for the price I'm being charged to consume, not worth it. Overall, I wouldn't come back here simply because the quality is worth the cost. It's a great place to try if you want to have a fun new experience in a pretty restaurant...but if you're a sushi fanatic like me, you will be disappointed. Food gets a 3 stars and the ambiance/staff gets a 5, so we meet in the middle at 4 stars. read more
