They were good but not great or especially creative. Each meal also came with miso soup and edamame. The most amazing aspect of this place was the ambiance. You are seated at a bar and the inside was really cool. I felt like I was eating Japanese food/hot pot at a club. This is one of the 8 restaurants/bars on the 8th floor of the Moxy Hotel in Downtown LA. For dining guests, you can get 3 hour valet parking for $27.50. I stopped by the rooftop pool bar afterwards, and that was really fun too. Plan to stop by the bar for a drink or two. You get a good view of LA and the place has great vibes. read more

WHEW this was disappointing. I had been wanting to check out Level 8 and specifically Lucky Mizu for some time. After planning a time that worked w my party, we made a reservation a few weeks in advance and eagerly awaited the night. Parking in this part of DTLA at night, especially on a Saturday night, is an exercise in patience. You will almost certainly not find street parking, free or metered, and will have to rely on DTLA's notorious price gouging outdoor parking lots. When we visited, there was a Kings game playing, the holiday ice rink, and another outdoor event going on so our parking fee was $30. The experience started to sour almost entirely upon arriving. We were blocked from entering the building to access Level 8 before we mentioned that we had a reservation at which point we were directed to the elevator. At Level 8; there was no hostess at the host stand for Lucky Mizu so we just walked into the restaurant looking for a staff member to speak to about where to sit. This resulted in a member of the staff rushing out, clearly annoyed with us, and walking us back to the host stand. We mentioned our reservation and her attitude was so strong and frankly strange that we were confused what we had done to even remotely warrant this?? We were sat at the sushi bar which is the only place you are able to reserve online in advance but Mizu is known for their picturesque butterfly booths so this was confusing as well. Service was quick but cold and honestly the entire vibe of this restaurant felt so off we ended up leaving Mizu in under 45 mins ,,, Given the strange attitudes, cramped atmosphere, and pricy menu, I won't be returning. It is unfortunate that we liked our meal but I don't think it is good enough to make up for all this. The service was notably unprofessional, as our server was dismissive throughout the meal. Cool, chic, and contemporary shabu shabu place in DTLA. Soooo incredibly beautiful inside with a very romantic ambiance. Semi private tables available for parties of 4-5, but what was unique about this place was that they had bar seating with individual hot plates to give you a more personalized shabu shabu experience. I've never had shabu shabu at the bar. Love this concept. So just as the other places, you pick your broth and then your choice of protein. Broth: bone broth (the most famous), tom yum, mushroom, and dashi (forgot what the latter was). Protein: prime ribeye, kurabota pork, A5 Kobe, A5 Miyazaki, A5 Kagoshima, premium seafood (seasonal options that rotate-was hoping for the shellfish option but was a little late in the season for it I suppose), tofu, or extra seasonal vegetables. All orders come with seasonal vegetables, noodles, and bowl of white rice. You also get four sauces (soy sauce, peanut, ponzu, teriyaki). Once you have your order the rest is self explanatory. I got the bone broth and decided to go with the premium seafood (pacific snapper and king salmon). The seafood was good but harder to eat because it often broke into pieces and settled at the bottom. Nevertheless less was good. However, the next time I'm going for my usual A5. Also ordered a drink that came in a cute kitty cup. Came here for the ayce hand rolls. A cool concept but after eating its a but if a gimmick. Some items were not included in ayce and we had to pay $6 extra. For example the uni & caviar as well as the Toro. When I thought about it, after paying for my food, I would've had the same options plus more at a regular ayce sushi restaurant (minus the uni_caviar). There were not appetizers included with the ayce, strictly hand rolls As far as service, there was a bit of confusion with the orders. Mainly trying to figure out who ordered what, but nothing to gripe about. My issue is that I saw a certain type of ice in a bucket with ice I really like. Aka nugget ice. I told the server I would like some of that ice. He was hesitant but complied anyways. A little later I asked for more ice but this time from a different waiter. He told me " I can get you ice like that but that bucket is used for the seafood". I was a little shook when I heard that. This review is for the ayce handroll menu! My boyfriend and I came on a weekend night and we were seated promptly at the bar. The ayce is 38 a person and there's 8 types of rolls to choose from. There's also 4 premium rolls that are 6 each that's not part of the ayce. There's an additional ayce sake and beer for 28. We didn't get that. We tried all of them except the cucumber avocado one. Our favorites were the salmon with chili oil, yellowtail, and spicy shrimp. I feel like those are the most bang for your buck too. The fish is fresh and the rice is good sushi rice. The seaweed unfortunately a bit soggy. Probably cause the rice was too warm and made it soggy. Overall, we had a good time. Service was quick enough and they let us order rolls quickly. However the food, price, and service don't live up to those expectations. The menu has plenty of creative cocktails, handrolls and shabu shabu as well as seiro mushi (steamed hot pot without the broth). Our table was impressed with the cocktails and the handrolls - the wagyu one probably being everyone's favorite. But the shabu shabu was underwhelming. Small portions at such a high price point and not enough broth options. The dipping sauces were the tiniest portions too, like just a tablespoon. That's not enough to be dipping your food in. Service is also very slow, from the we time ordered and to when we got our food it took over twenty minutes. There is not a one thing that we ordered that was not good! All of them were so delicious, my favorite was the salmon crunch and the unagi with caviar! I tried almost everything unfortunately I am very bad with remembering all the names! We had truffle fries, karaage chicken, and a lot more! All of them did not disappoint! They were really good. The highlight of our visit? The staff! They were all very nice to us, most especially our host Danny, and also to mention Patrick. All the concern, questions, and everything we need, they delivered!!! Danny also gave us complimentary champagne and sake shots on the house since we were there for our 3rd year anniversary. Gonna try to paint the picture in as few words as possible. Sorry for the long narrative: 1) I planned out a special night for my wife throughout all of Level 8 2) Had reservations set at Lucky Mizu for Dinner to Mr. Wanderlust for Cocktails and Entertainment and then to Sinners and Santos for Drinking and Dancing for Latin Night 3) Showed up for our 6:45 PM reservation at Lucky Mizu but was turned away 3 times stating they didn't have seats available. After being seated 40 minutes later, service took 20 minutes to take our order, and another 30 minutes to be served. Food was 'okay', there was no entertainment, and multiple customers were unhappy with similar slow service... but some of them were comped parts of their meals.. we didn't even get a sorry until we spoke to the manager on our way out, expressing the reason was they had no idea it would be this busy on a Thursday (they take reservations, so...), and also blamed an 'all you can eat promotion' they promoted earlier, and they only had two serves on staff that night. 4) We were late to Mr. Wanderlust, but were luck to get two seats at the bar after another couple left. We order two cocktails and a coffee... and were charged just over $140. Then, we were asked to move because they wanted to take our seats. We asked about the bill to the bartendar, and she expressed that since she didn't take our original order, she couldn't help us. She simply just had us stand there. We were not going to pay since it seemed way off... until finally we spoke to a guy walking by. We showed him our ticket/receipt and said out loud, "this isn't right". He came back quickly with a revised bill of almost $120. This was still far too high, but no one else seemed interested in helping us find resolve, so we ate it since we didn't want to be late for part 3 of the night. 5) Hoping to salvage the night with drinks and dancing... we tried to find the entrance to Sinners and Santos for their advertised Latin night. We had made reservations here too, and had full confirmation of the reservation... BUT, after finally being directed to the entrance (outside on the patio), they were closed. No sign of why and no one who worked at the other locations had a reason, but they were just simply closed. 6) So, after paying $35 for parking, about $140 in cocktails and food while waiting for our initial reservation at Golden Hour and Que Barbaro, $150+ for dinner at Lucky Mizu, and $120 at Mr. Wanderlust... approximately $500 total... we didn't even get to dance. Maybe this place had a bad night, but based on what the workers said, and how they treated us... it sure seems like the norm. Don't get me wrong, the place is cool... some really great experiential elements and nice photo ops... but I would have had a much better time somewhere else. Lucky Mizu is designed beautifully and I love the vibe they're going for, but unfortunately the food and the service fall short...way short. We ordered both the shabu shabu in bone broth with the ribeye and the seiro mushi (steamed no broth) with the A5 Miyazaki. The broth came wrong on the shabu shabu and they somehow managed to get every dipping sauces we ordered wrong as well. The meat portions on both the shabu and the seiro mushi were also super stingy...either they're not honest about how much they give you or they're incompetent at measuring the correct portions. The meat itself was decent quality, but I just was absolutely insulted with the portions. The hostesses that check you in and seat you were super friendly, but the server was a completely different sorry. The server seemed bitchy and annoyed the whole time and barely came by to check up on us. Also, they have printed instructions in case you're not familiar with shabu shabu, but other than that, the server offered absolutely no guidance at all. Maybe they're just looking to capture the business of people staying at the hotel, but the experience overall is subpar and mediocre at best. You can tell they actually pay attention to thier craft. But what really made it for me was the people. Lucky Mizu aesthetically is such a vibe. A small funky restaurant at the Moxie that transports you to a trendy mini Supperclub somewhere in Tokyo. A reservation is a must, otherwise you will be left in the dust. We arrived within our 15 minute grace period and were seated five minutes later. Because there is not a lot of seating at this restaurant, if you do not have a reservation, there's a chance you will have to wait quite a while. There was a DJ, lots of staff, and a gorgeous harp near the ceiling, but unfortunately no harp player during our 10:15pm to 11:30pm visit (Tokyo Nights). Friendly staff and the food arrived quickly. But unfortunately the food itself was not good. Everything was just ok. Everything was not only lacking in flavor but lacking in quality! And for the prices..that's not cool. Here's what we had: Truffle Edamame- 3/10 (bland) Hamachi Shots- 5/10 (tasty but please remove whatever gelatin you're putting at the bottom of the shot glass. Interesting place with great entertainment. Located on level 8, Lucky Mizu is one of the several restaurants aimed to provide an interesting experience for the night. Food was ok, definitely can't beat the authentic Shabu places. The tomyum soup base is really good and the ginger dipping sauce is good as well. It was okay. I went on a Wednesday with my boyfriend. It was way overpriced. The hand rolls weren't even hand rolls; they were tiny. Service was slow even on a Wednesday as it was a slow night. Apparently they don't have shabu on Wednesday's and it doesn't say that anywhere on their website or on their instagram. That was really disappointing. read more

This was the most expensive shabu shabu dining experience I have ever had. It also was definitely not the easiest to locate either. Once we found the elevator that takes you to the Level 8 floor, we had to ask around to find where to check in for the restaurant as the floor has other restaurants and bars. I opted for the 4 ounces of kurobuta pork shabu shabu with the bone broth as the base. The food came out very nicely presented. I have to give kudos for the presentation. I had to ask the server for the status of our food a few times though to get all components of the shabu shabu. I am not pleased with that because for such an establishment and price point, service should be on point. The food itself was good, but it was not good enough to justify its price point. Also, as much as I love the broth, it was so concentrated that it was salty. I had to mix some of kombu broth into my bone broth and drink a lot of glasses of water. The ambiance was the best part of my dining experience. I love the lucky cats lining the wall and the harp performance. It was definitely unique. read more

Had a good time at this spot! My friends and I went for reverse happy hour which started at 10 pm. The ambiance was cute but it is quite loud, so it's a little hard to hear your friends at a table. They had a DJ, a dancer and a musician playing the strings - definitely got dinner and a show! The servers were helpful and moved us from a bar to a table at our request. The food was good but the portions are very, very small! Same goes for the drinks. Definitely on the pricey end. I'd recommend checking the space out if you're not incredibly hungry! read more
