My friend and I checked out Katsuya today and had a bit of a mixed experience. It is a really interesting dual concept space where you walk in and see two kiosks, one for Japanese food and one for Korean street food. My friend and I decided on the Japanese menu. I ordered the chicken katsu sando, and the chicken itself was nice and crispy, plus the milk bread had that perfect fluffy texture. Unfortunately, the bread was just way too sweet. It honestly tasted like the lid fell off the sugar jar when they were making the dough. The macaroni salad and the small side salad were both just okay, nothing special, though the sesame ball dessert at the end was really nice, even if it tasted a bit more Chinese than Japanese in my opinion. My friend got the tonkatsu bento meal and really loved her dish, so her food definitely helped save the meal. Aside from the food, I had a couple of real concerns with how the place is run. First, the floor was incredibly slippery. I was wearing my Converse sneakers and was sliding all over the place, which is a big housekeeping and safety issue. Second, they charge a sneaky 2% fee if you use a credit card, which is never mentioned on the kiosk when you pay. While it is not a ton of money, it is a transparency issue and I really would have appreciated knowing that upfront. My friend's great meal rounds this up to a 3-star experience, but between the sugar-bomb bread, the slick floors, and the hidden fee, they definitely have some things to fix.

Super casual katsu restaurant, good spot for a quick bite in FiDi! You order at the kiosk (there are other options along with katsu sets), and they bring the food out. Super casual seating. Good quick spot! Loved the Mac salad

"Inexpensive Japanese in downtown San Francisco financial district" My son and I stopped here for dinner randomly on a Friday night just before 6pm. He just visited Japan a few months ago and had a hankering for some chicken katsu. It's a small, narrow establishment, not far from the See's Candy store, but well-lit. One orders on a set of tablets at the front of the restaurant and then sits down. I ordered the chicken katsu don, which has the chicken katsu above vegetables, rice, and egg. My son wanted the chicken katsu curry rice, and also was eager for the Takoyaki (which has octopus). There was a complementary water station in the back (which we didn't notice before ordering bottles). I was impressed the entrees were all under $20 before tax and tip-- great for downtown SF. We didn't anticipate complementary miso soup, but we got it, and it was tasty. The takooyaki arrived next-- maybe 6 pieces and quite good. When you pop it in your mouth and bite, you get a burst of milk-like flavor in you mouth. I frankly couldn't taste the octopus, but that's OK... it was still yummy. I really liked my chicken katsu don-- I wanted some veggies, and the cabbage underneath was good, as was the seasoning. The chicken itself was excellent. My son said it wasn't quite as good as in Japan but agreed it was still good. The portion size was big-- I wasn't quite able to finish all the rice in mine. Service was fine-- I don't remember them checking on us after we got food, but we really didn't need anything since we'd already paid, water was available, etc. The restaurant itself was clean, too. I did stop at the washroom upstairs, and it had nice wooden floors, a large plant, etc., and clean overall. Overall, a solid choice at an amazing price for the area, so I'm happy to give 5 stars.

Truthfully, I didn't know what I was in for in visiting Katsuya. Apparently I wasn't alone. Arriving for a work lunch during lunch hours, one thing we did know, as a group of 5, is that we immediately needed to grab a seat while we figured it out. From there, I definitely felt like I was in some sort of clue based, escape room style, "figure-it-out" gameshow. Once settled, my group struggled to find a menu apart from one on the wall above the order kiosk (which was difficult to view from our table). We also had a time deciphering that not one but two restaurants occupied the space, each with their own menu. Woohoo, clue unlocked! Apparently we missed out on complimentary miso, but after ordering, and a short wait, we were rewarded with sandwiches! Although these sandwiches were beautiful and fragrant, the vibe at the table was sheer surprise! These meals are huge, and in addition to your sandwich, they arrive with multiple sides. All things said and done, they offer an impressive meal at a competitive price. Just make sure to read the Yelp reviews first so you're in the know!

Coming here was really simple. There was no line. Food came out fast. They almost gave someone else my food. The server gave me the wrong order initially. I wish both kiosks served both businesses menus.

We enjoyed the Chicken Karaage, the Chicken Katsu bento, and a side of rice for lunch.

My hubs and I were visiting SF for a long weekend and after visiting the very popular Farmers Market at the Embarcadero on Saturday, we wanted a place away from the crowds to eat lunch and decompress. Katsuya in the Financial District was the perfect place for this. On weekdays, this place is probably packed, but on a Saturday, it was only half full. Music was playing but not too loud. It was cool inside. Ahhh, great place to take a load off. We ordered at the kiosk. There are two--one for Katsuya and one for another restaurant that makes Korean food. We ordered the chicken katsu bento, the karaage chicken, and a side of rice. One of the staff came and cleaned off our table before we sat down. We got some ice water from the free standing dispenser. Our food came pretty quickly. Everything was cooked just right. We especially liked how savory and crunchy the chicken karaage was. The only thing we didn't eat was the shredded cabbage that came with the bento. It looked innocent but it was mixed with a light horseradish dressing and was too spicy for us. I'm taking off one star because the stairs to the bathrooms upstairs were slippery and yet the banister was broken with a sign saying to not touch it. This was kinda challenging to navigate. But other than that, Katsuya was a great place for lunch, the staff were friendly and efficient, and we'd definitely come here again next time we're in the area.

Conveniently located in FiDi and sharing the space with another eatery, Katsuya is a solid option for lunch or dinner. On my last visit I ordered online for pickup on my way home from my class. I arrived a bit early so it wasn't ready yet, but np - since it was near the end of the day there were plenty of seats inside to wait. There were a few people dining in, but even more coming through for takeout and delivery - staff were bustling about too, which is usually a good sign. Prices seem to have gone up over the years (IIRC they used to be in a different location), but the portions are generous. My husband and I typically share a tonkatsu sando meal and it's still plenty for the both of us.

I came here with my friend after work on Monday. There was only one other table at this time since it was 5:30pm after work. This is a small restaurant where you just order on the self-serve kiosk, sit at a table, and the server would bring the food to you, so you don't really interact with any of the staff. The place seems fairly chill and casual. I would imagine it's much more hectic during the lunch hour. My friend and I were confused at first because the two kiosks had different menus before we realized that Katsuya and Seoul Bunsik share this place. I went with the Chicken Katsu from Katsuya, and my friend went with Seoul Bunsik for the Creamy Carbonara. We sat down at a table, and a server brought us soup. I think it was miso soup, and it was pretty good. Our food came out in 15 minutes. The chicken katsu was crispy and flavorful, not dry. The macaroni salad was savory and saucy. I felt like it was a pretty good portion size for one person, and I left feeling satisfied. The total was $19.89 for my meal, so I would say it's not too pricey given the portion size. Before my katsu plate arrived, I had already finished my soup. I completely forgot to get water to drink while eating the katsu plate, but I didn't feel thirsty, so I think that it's good how the meal itself wasn't dry at all. I think this place is great for a meal if you're catching up with someone after work. I'm not sure what it's like during lunch hour, but dine-in might be busy.

A small little restaurant sharing its space with another restaurant, your exposure to the staff will only be when they bring food out and clean up. You'll order and pay at a kiosk in the front, and self-service water and utensils. We ordered a chicken katsu, a pork katsu curry rice, and a chicken karaage. The chicken katsu itself was fine. The sides weren't that great, either. The macaroni salad was a bit too pickle-y, the dressing was a little off to us, and the miso soup was watered down. The pork katsu was fairly crispy, but a little dry. The curry was incredibly watered down. Would not recommend getting this at all, even if you need a curry fix. The chicken karaage was fine. Fairly crispy and juicy, and the accompanying spicy mayo was decent. It did not come with any lemon.

A great option in the fidi area for lunch, come here pretty frequently. Love the lunch plate options they have here. Good portions here and a nice variety of things on the lunch plate. The katsu is crispy and juicy and they offer a variety of soup/sides for the lunch plate. The katsu curry is also super crispy. Got this to go and it had sat for 40 mins before I got to eating it. Even sitting through and have steam build up the texture was still crispy and didn't sog up! Katsu sando is stuffeddd with cheese and meat, def on the heavier side but so tasty.

This was fine is not forgettable. I'm over the non-interaction ordering system that used to be just at busy airports but has crept its way into so many restaurants. It just doesn't land for me, hard to explain. Especially as a group, it's a bit awkward to take turns with it, know what to order, etc. so I just defaulted to trying what the group ordered, a chicken curry katsu. The chicken was the highlight as it was flavorful, but the rest was OK. It was thick and under-flavored.. I found myself shaking some sort of unlabeled spicy powder all over every bite I took to spice it up, literally and figuratively. Probably a good spot if you're on your own and can grab a spot up at Salesforce Park on a nice day. For us, we squeezed into a table and the atmosphere is very much a "to-go" vibe. Wouldn't make it a point to return, but it wasn't bad.

Wow, this was so delicious! Portions are huge. The katsu sando itself is massive, and if you go with a box it comes with all sorts of accompaniments like mac salad, bean balls and cole slaw. The chicken is super thin, crispy and flavorful. If you like katsu chicken then you really cannot go wrong. Grabbing seats, ordering at the kiosk and getting our food was all a pretty quick and seamless process. They have a big lunch crowd but people move in and out fast. This is a nice pick for lunch in the area if you want something fast, quality and filling.

I tried both their katsu pork sando bento box and katsu pork with rice bento box before. It's similar except the sando one comes with 4 sesame balls that has an orange type of sauce. I don't like that orange sauce or their salad dressing because it's spicy with a kick of wasabi. I usually omit the salad dressing and use the katsu sauce on the salad instead. This place used to be in the International Court. Glad to see them do well and moved to their own space.

We were the first group of 9 to come in right at opening and were told that because we had a large group everyone was required to spend $70. That's not hard to hit considering you're eating out at a sushi restaurant, but the fact that we were told to spend at least $70 a person in order to be seated is crazy! We even asked what was recommended and the seasonal donburi or sake was the most popular. So now we went for those options, but still had to make up the remaining $32 per person that went for the sake donburi. Some people that didn't even want to drink opted for beer because they already got matcha next door. Service charge was already included yet the requirement to spend $70 a person just to dine here is ridiculous. I would come back, but not with a group of more than 4. Anyone that has friends or colleagues of more than 4 go elsewhere!

I finally got to try it and walked in on a Saturday right at opening for a party of 2. We waited probably about 15 minutes and were sat in the back patio. The interior space was beautifully done and looked very elevated. The back patio also looked nice, but definitely gave off a different vibe. The service was great, no complaints there. Everybody was super nice and attentive. The food also came out fairly quickly. Our favorites were the donburi (of course) and the dashi apple mocktail. Some cons: - how expensive it was for the amount of food. Some reviews mentioned the donburi was tiny (which it was) - no bigger than my hand. - Almost all the dishes we got were finger foods but kind of hard to eat. The ceviche with the nori chips would fall apart. The dark nori seasoning got all over our hands and was difficult to get off with just the cloth napkin. The shoji burger was covered in cheese which we assumed was finger food since they didn't offer any knives. The donburi was filled to the top in this bowl which was small so you have to be very careful scooping out. In addition, the seasoning from the seaweed was a bit oily as well. Maybe offering a wet wipe or napkin at the end of the meal would be a nice touch. I guess it was a bit confusing given the elevated / upscale vibe it was giving off but could improve in the small details. Not sure if I can say I recommend or not but would be willing to give it another chance. Perhaps try the experience inside instead.

The wagyu dumplings were meaty and tasty. The hand rolls were full of fish and so worth it during happy hour. We initially went for the pre-set menu ($90 per head and includes steaks and sashimi etc) but after looking at the amazing options on the menu we decided to order a la carte and that was the best decision. There were 4 of us so we could sample a wider variety of items and each and every thing we ordered was flavorful, fresh, presented well, good portions and filling. We got the yellowtail sashimi, sashimi tacos, shishito peppers, wagyu dumplings, grilled octopus, shrimp tempura, Australian steak, hamachi serrano roll, seared salmon roll and for dessert we had cheesecake and chocolate cake. Each and every thing we ordered was fantastic and the total came to what the pre set menu would have cost us but we got to try a wider variety of dishes. The service was friendly, knowledgeable and prompt. They also paired - mix and matched the dishes for us and spaced them out so everything came in pairs that went well together. Overall we had an amazing dinner evening here and will definitely come back.

The gyudon was excellent with a lightly sweet and savory flavor, I'd definitely get this again! The Hokkaido cheesecake was light and had what seemed like whipped cream in it which isn't my preference for cheesecake so I would skip this item next time. You put your name and number of people in your party at the list on the door, but the wait goes bye fairly quick. They have indoor and some outdoor seating. We loved their entree items and would definitely come back here!

We ordered a few dishes to share: Mushroom gyoza ($12) - came with 6 potstickers and a dipping sauce. Nothing super special. Hijiki salad ($13) - light and filled with seaweed, as expected. Got a few bites of the tofu puffs, but not much fish cake. Mentaiko spaghetti ($19) - not super creamy and with good flavor. Usually with these types of dishes, I'm concerned that it's too buttery or fishy, but this was spot on! Gyudon ($19) - egg looked like it was cooked beautifully. Katsu curry ($22) - good presentation, seemed to have quite a bit of rice. I didn't try the last two dishes, but I was told they were good. Nothing crazy special though. Personally, I think the noodle dish was the best. We also tried their Hokkaido cheesecake, and that was probably the only disappointing item. It wasn't as light and creamy as the ones I've had in Japan (LeTao will always be the gold standard in my heart). I ate a couple of bites and decided it just wasn't worth the calories. Service was friendly and I appreciate that there's outdoor dining. I saw a few furry friends, but if I didn't have pets, I would likely prefer to sit indoors. Seats seem more comfortable inside.

Finally had the chance to dine at Kusakabe for my birthday…read more My boyfriend reserved us the omakase dinner with a sake flight for me and a wine flight for him. We really enjoyed our chef Mika who was attentive, skilled, and just over all added to our experience. The waiter/busser paid attention and maintained our area with cleanliness. The fish quality was amazing, fresh, and unique. There were a few items that were prepared uniquely and differently from what I've had at other places which I appreciated! My boyfriend who can eat the same meal 100x actually enjoyed the experience. Cannot wait to go back!

We walked into a refined but welcoming space where the sushi counter is the main focus, and the meal unfolds course by course in front of us. There is a sense of calm throughout the room, allowing the attention to stay on the chefs, the ingredients, and the details behind each dish without the distraction of a busy dining room. The omakase experience balances traditional sushi with more creative touches. Each course brings something different, from fresh sashimi and nigiri to warmer dishes like chawan mushi that add depth to the progression of the meal. The sushi highlights the quality of the fish while incorporating thoughtful flavor combinations, with dishes like scallop and the dry-aged fish courses standing out for their texture and seasoning. The sake pairing fits naturally into the experience, adding another layer without overpowering the food, and the sommelier's selections complement the progression of flavors across the meal. What makes Kusakabe memorable is the craftsmanship and pacing of the meal. The chefs take time to explain each course, making the experience feel personal rather than rushed. Sitting at the counter adds to the atmosphere because you get to see the precision and care that goes into every piece, from the way the rice is formed to the final brush of sauce on the fish. The pacing of the meal allows you to appreciate each course without feeling rushed, and the team's attention to detail creates a rhythm that keeps the meal engaging from start to finish. Kusakabe feels like a place made for special occasions, celebrations, or anyone looking for a more elevated Japanese dining experience. It combines technique, hospitality, and creativity in a way that makes the entire meal feel like an event rather than just a dinner. The balance of traditional and modern elements, along with the warmth of the service, leaves you with the sense of having experienced something complete and thoughtfully composed.
